If a licensed horror game left you wanting a different kind of fear, start with Dead Space (2023) for combat and resource pressure. Choose Alien: Isolation when being hunted sounds more appealing than shooting, SOMA for psychological and philosophical unease, Amnesia: The Dark Descent for hiding and puzzle solving, or Outlast 2 for an aggressively helpless first-person experience.
This order is not a quality ranking. It matches the next game to the skill the player wants to exercise: aiming, evasion, interpretation, spatial problem-solving, or escape.

How to choose your next horror game
“Original” here means a game whose setting and characters are not dependent on a film, television, comic, or other licensed universe. The useful distinction is not whether a game has a famous name; it is how the game creates pressure.
- Combat pressure: You manage ammunition, positioning, and enemies while advancing through a self-contained science-fiction world.
- Sustained pursuit: You are tracked by a threat and must read spaces, timing, and hiding opportunities instead of relying on firepower.
- Psychological uncertainty: The fear comes from atmosphere, ideas, and questions about identity or reality rather than a conventional combat loop.
- Puzzles and vulnerability: You solve environmental problems while avoiding direct confrontation.
- Helpless first-person survival: You flee, hide, and document what is happening because fighting is not the main solution.
Use the table below to identify the closest fit before committing to a long campaign. Each game deliberately changes one part of the licensed-horror formula, so the transition feels meaningful rather than like another version of the same experience.

Dead Space (2023): the safest first step for action-horror fans
Pick Dead Space (2023) when the part of licensed horror you enjoyed most was the physical act of surviving: entering dangerous rooms, choosing when to spend resources, and fighting your way through a hostile science-fiction environment. Electronic Arts classifies the remake as “Horror Survival” and describes it as faithful to the original vision. That combination makes it the most straightforward bridge from a licensed action-horror game to an original setting.
Why the transition works
The game has a clearly defined third-person action loop. You can read the room, decide whether a threat is worth confronting, and move forward through a self-contained science-fiction world rather than relying on knowledge of an existing film universe. The perspective also keeps the character and surroundings visible, which makes combat positioning part of the tension.
For a player coming from a licensed game built around shooting, this is the least disruptive recommendation. You still make moment-to-moment decisions under pressure, but the setting, characters, and progression belong to the game itself. That gives the horror room to establish its own rules instead of asking you to recognize references.

Dead Space is not the right answer if your favorite moments came from being unable to fight back. Its defining strength is the interaction between combat and limited resources, so the fear often comes from deciding how to use what you have. Players who want long stretches of hiding should move to Alien: Isolation, Amnesia, or Outlast 2 instead.
Who should choose it first
- Players who want an original setting without giving up a combat-centered structure.
- Players who prefer third-person awareness to a fully first-person viewpoint.
- Players who enjoy managing pressure through tactical decisions rather than only through hiding.

Alien: Isolation: when the enemy is the pursuit itself
Alien: Isolation is the choice for readers who want the skill test to shift from shooting to evasion. HP describes it as a 2014 first-person survival-horror game, and PlayStation presents it as a single-player horror story. Those descriptions point to its central contract: you are being hunted, and progress depends on reading the environment rather than overpowering every threat.
What you practice
Every encounter asks you to manage exposure. Movement, hiding places, and timing matter because the danger is not solved by simply clearing a room. The first-person view narrows your information to what the character can see, making sound and spatial memory important parts of decision-making.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This structure is especially effective after a licensed horror game that made you feel safe once you had enough ammunition. Isolation removes that assumption. The tension persists because a successful escape does not turn the next corridor into a conventional combat arena.
The cost of its design
The deliberate pace is the point, but it can also be the barrier. A player expecting frequent fights or rapid progression may read the stealth sections as slow. A failed attempt can send you back through part of the same sequence, so patience is a practical requirement rather than a mood preference.
Choose it if you want
- A first-person perspective centered on being hunted.
- A single-player story where stealth decisions carry more weight than firepower.
- A sustained threat instead of isolated encounters separated by combat-heavy downtime.
Verify the current platform, storefront, and edition in your region before purchase. PlayStation and HP list the game in their horror coverage, but those editorial listings are not a guarantee of identical availability everywhere.
SOMA: psychological and philosophical science fiction
Choose SOMA when you want horror to stay with you because of an idea, not because of a difficult fight. HP includes SOMA among notable PC horror games, and its place in this group reflects an atmosphere-first approach: the game uses speculative science fiction to create uncertainty about what is happening and what it means.
Why it feels different from licensed horror
Licensed horror often gives you a recognizable monster or mythology as an anchor. SOMA instead asks you to navigate an original premise whose implications are part of the fear. The setting is not merely decoration; it supports questions about consciousness, identity, and the boundaries of being human.
That makes it a strong follow-up for players who finished a licensed game and found themselves more interested in its unanswered questions than in its combat encounters. You are encouraged to interpret clues and atmosphere, allowing dread to build through uncertainty.
Know the trade-off
SOMA does not deliver the conventional combat-driven payoff some players expect from survival horror. If your ideal session alternates firefights with exploration, Dead Space is a better first choice. SOMA is for the reader who would rather sit with an unsettling implication than defeat a boss through mechanical execution.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Best circumstances for playing
- When you want science fiction that carries philosophical weight.
- When atmosphere and interpretation matter more than weapon mastery.
- When you are comfortable with fear that may arrive as a question or realization rather than a chase.
Approach it as an atmosphere-led experience. Expect the game to reward attention to context and ideas rather than to treat every frightening moment as a combat tutorial.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the classic choice for players who want to solve spaces while avoiding direct fights. HP and GamesRadar include Amnesia in their horror selections, and its enduring appeal comes from an evasion-focused structure: exploration and puzzle solving are inseparable from the need to stay out of danger.
The central loop
You enter an unfamiliar space, work out how its parts connect, and look for a way forward while remaining vulnerable. The pressure comes from having to think while you are trying not to be found. A locked route is not just a puzzle; it can become a risk because spending time searching may expose you.
This is a useful next step after a licensed game that made you curious about the environment itself. Instead of treating rooms as arenas for set pieces, Amnesia makes the spaces the problem. You learn their layout, test possible solutions, and decide when progress is worth the danger.
Who may bounce off it
Players who measure horror by the quality of its weapons or by the satisfaction of defeating enemies may find the limited direct combat frustrating. The absence of a conventional action release is intentional, but it requires accepting that escape and problem-solving are the victories.

Pick Amnesia when
- You prefer puzzles to firefights.
- You want hiding and vulnerability to remain central throughout play.
- You enjoy learning a threatening space rather than clearing it.
GamesRadar’s inclusion of Amnesia alongside other horror recommendations is useful context, but it is not an objective ranking. Choose it because its evasion-and-puzzle design matches the type of fear you want next.
Outlast 2: the most helpless option
Outlast 2 fits readers who want first-person flight and hiding with little sense of physical control. PlayStation and HP include Outlast entries in their horror recommendations, and this sequel is the most uncompromising option in this set for players who prefer a camera-based, flee-and-hide structure.

Why it follows licensed horror well
Outlast 2 strips the transition down to a basic survival question: can you get away? The camera becomes your way of observing and documenting danger rather than a tool for defeating it. That keeps your attention on routes, concealment, and timing.
For someone coming from a licensed game where combat eventually made the protagonist powerful, this is a deliberate reversal. The tension is not resolved by collecting better weapons. It comes from remaining exposed, deciding when to move, and surviving a chase long enough to find the next safe opening.
Understand the intensity
The game’s chase design is high intensity, and its graphic content is not suitable for every player. If sustained pursuit already makes you stop playing, begin with SOMA or Amnesia instead. If you specifically want the strongest helplessness in this group, Outlast 2 is the closest match.
Choose it if you want
- A first-person perspective with flight and hiding as the main responses.
- Chases that keep pressure high rather than allowing a quick combat reset.
- A horror experience where vulnerability is the point, not a temporary handicap.
Check the current storefront description and regional content information before purchase, particularly if graphic material is a concern.

After a game where puzzles were the highlight
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the most direct match because its spaces and puzzles are designed around vulnerability. SOMA is an alternative when you want the puzzle of understanding an idea rather than primarily manipulating an environment.

Platform, edition, and purchase checks
Availability is not fixed across every region or storefront. Before paying, confirm:
- The platform version you actually own or plan to use.
- Whether the listing is the current edition, a remake, or an older release.
- That the seller ships to your country if you are buying a physical copy.
- Any content information relevant to your tolerance for graphic violence or intense chases.
- Whether the purchase route is an official digital store or a clearly identified physical listing.
EA’s official Dead Space page includes current purchase routes, while editorial listings from PlayStation, HP, and GamesRadar establish the games’ genre context. Those sources should be treated as descriptions and availability clues, not as a universal guarantee that every edition is in stock everywhere.

Horror design depends heavily on attention and sound. A closed-back gaming headset can help isolate environmental audio, but it is an accessory rather than a requirement. If you use one, keep the volume at a level that lets you stay comfortable and aware of your surroundings.
Give each game enough uninterrupted time to reveal its intended rhythm. Dead Space needs room for combat decisions; Alien: Isolation and Outlast 2 need patience during pursuit; Amnesia rewards careful spatial observation; SOMA benefits from letting its atmosphere and ideas develop without rushing between sessions.
Finally, decide in advance which kind of discomfort you are willing to trade for immersion. Slow stealth, repeated failed escapes, graphic content, and a lack of combat are different friction points. Selecting for that friction is more reliable than selecting by franchise familiarity.
Final recommendation
For most players leaving a licensed horror game, begin with Dead Space (2023). It provides the clearest original setting and the most familiar action-horror handoff. If you want to be hunted instead of armed, choose Alien: Isolation. Choose SOMA for psychological and philosophical science fiction, Amnesia: The Dark Descent for puzzles under pressure, and Outlast 2 when helpless first-person survival is exactly the point.
