For a TV-to-soundbar connection, choose a standard male-to-male TOSLINK optical digital audio cable long enough to reach with a little slack. Connect the TV’s optical digital audio output to the soundbar’s optical input. Before buying, confirm that both devices have those ports and check their manuals for supported audio formats: the cable cannot make either device support formats the connection does not carry.
What to look for in an optical audio cable
Matching ports
Look for a TOSLINK cable and verify that the TV has an optical digital audio output and the soundbar has an optical digital audio input. Labels may say Optical, TOSLINK, or S/PDIF; check the model manuals rather than identifying a port by appearance alone. Sony’s setup instructions specify connecting the TV’s OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL DIGITAL IN. A Philips soundbar manual identifies its S/PDIF digital audio input as “Optical:TOSLINK” (Philips soundbar manual).

Length and handling
Measure the cable route, including the distance around furniture or along a wall, and allow some slack so the cable is not pulled tight. The cited device documentation does not establish a universal maximum consumer cable length or a best length. It also does not establish that a premium price, special coating, or particular cable construction improves audible quality. Make sure the plugs can be inserted securely and the cable can be routed without strain.
What audio can optical carry?
Optical carries digital audio, but supported formats depend on the TV, soundbar, and source. Samsung’s UK connection guide, updated 11 August 2026, says optical does not carry some higher-bandwidth formats, including Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD; its comparison lists Dolby Digital 5.1 as supported over optical, but not those two formats. Samsung Germany’s optical-format guidance describes S/PDIF optical as supporting Dolby Digital, DTS, or PCM, with audio up to 5.1 channels. These descriptions are not a guarantee for every device: check both manuals and the audio source’s capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
If your setup needs Dolby Digital Plus or lossless, high-bitrate audio, check whether both the TV and soundbar support HDMI ARC or eARC. Choose that connection if it supports the formats you need; optical may remain suitable for simpler or already-supported formats.
Connect the TV and soundbar
- Confirm the TV has an optical digital audio output and the soundbar has an optical digital audio input. If the manuals list supported formats, check that they meet your needs.
- Remove the protective caps from the cable tips, if present. Connect one end to the TV’s OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT and the other to the soundbar’s OPTICAL DIGITAL IN.
- Select the soundbar’s optical input and set the TV’s audio output to the external audio system, following the labels and menu instructions in the device manuals.
- If there is no sound or the audio is incompatible, try PCM as the TV’s digital audio output format. Philips advises using Standard or PCM when a soundbar does not support Dolby- or DTS-encoded audio (Philips soundbar manual).
If there is no sound
Work through these checks before replacing the cable:
Rank #2
- Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
- IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
- CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
- DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
- Check that both plugs are seated firmly. Sony recommends disconnecting and reinserting the cable firmly if it is already connected (Sony setup instructions).
- Remove any protective caps from the cable tips, and confirm that the TV end is in OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT and the soundbar end is in OPTICAL DIGITAL IN. See TCL’s optical-audio troubleshooting guide.
- Verify that the soundbar is set to its optical input and that the TV is outputting sound to an external audio device.
- Set the TV’s digital audio format to PCM as a compatibility test. TCL recommends PCM as the most compatible setting; the Philips manual also directs users to Standard or PCM when the soundbar does not support Dolby or DTS audio (TCL troubleshooting; Philips soundbar manual).
- If sound remains absent, consult both device manuals for the relevant audio-output setting and supported formats.
When the ports do not match
If one device has optical S/PDIF and the other has coaxial digital audio, a converter may be needed. Philips describes optical-to-coaxial or coaxial-to-optical conversion for that port mismatch (Philips soundbar manual). A converter changes the connection type; it does not guarantee that the TV, soundbar, or source supports a particular audio format. Before buying conversion hardware, check whether the devices share another suitable connection, such as HDMI ARC or eARC.
Is one optical cable better than another?
No verified product ranking or controlled comparison establishes a best brand or audible advantage for a particular cable. For a direct TV-to-soundbar connection, the practical choice is a standard male-to-male TOSLINK cable that fits both ports and reaches along your measured route. Give priority to connector fit and suitable length rather than unsupported claims about sound quality or special construction.
