No game can reproduce every part of GTA’s formula, and these recommendations differ sharply in setting, pace and combat. The useful question is what kind of interior exploration you want while you wait.

Quick comparison
“Explorable interiors” can mean several things: buildings you can enter freely, locations that support combat or stealth, homes and shops that advance a quest, or richly staged rooms that reward looking around. The five games below cover those interpretations rather than pretending that every interior works the same way.

There is no authoritative published count of enterable interiors for these games, so density here is a practical comparison of how often interiors matter during normal play, not a building tally.

1. Cyberpunk 2077: the closest modern-city substitute
Why it leads this list
Cyberpunk 2077 puts you in Night City, where vertical megabuildings, apartments, clubs, shops and mission locations are part of the city’s identity rather than occasional set dressing. You move from streets into interiors constantly: a job may begin in an apartment, pass through a commercial floor and end in a tightly staged combat or investigation space. That rhythm is the nearest match here to the fantasy of driving around a contemporary city and repeatedly finding somewhere meaningful to go inside.
The city is dense rather than uniformly open. Many doors are decorative, but the interiors that are available tend to be authored around a purpose: a conversation, a heist, a faction encounter, a shop visit, an apartment scene or environmental storytelling. This makes the game especially good for players who would rather have fewer memorable spaces than a huge number of empty rooms.
What interiors let you do
- Follow quests through connected spaces: missions use offices, clubs, residential towers and industrial areas as active stages.
- Explore different social environments: Night City’s commercial, residential and nightlife interiors have distinct moods and layouts.
- Use a fast action toolkit: first-person combat keeps movement between street and building energetic.
- Return to personal spaces: apartments and hubs provide a contrast to high-risk mission interiors.
Which edition to choose
If you are buying now, look for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which packages the base game with the Phantom Liberty expansion. Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown, an additional district with its own dense city spaces and quest locations. Check the current store listing for your console or PC before purchasing because edition names and availability can vary by platform.
Where it differs from GTA
Cyberpunk 2077 is not a crime-sandbox clone. Its interiors are usually tied to quests, characters and authored encounters rather than a simulation in which every building behaves like a separate toy box. The first-person perspective and role-playing systems also make combat, dialogue and build choices more central than free-roaming vehicle chaos. Choose it when interior density and a modern setting matter more than duplicating GTA’s exact structure.
2. Fallout 4: the strongest systemic interior sandbox
Why exploration keeps working
Fallout 4 treats abandoned interiors as systems you can use, not just scenery. Ruined homes, offices, factories, vaults and dungeons contain routes to investigate, materials to recover and threats to manage. You may enter looking for one objective and leave after finding a locked room, a terminal, a weapon, a crafting component or a clue that sends you somewhere else.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
This creates a different kind of density from Cyberpunk 2077. Fallout 4’s world is less uniformly urban, but its interiors are repeatedly useful because scavenging feeds crafting and settlement progression. A building can matter even when it has no major scripted scene: the act of searching it improves your equipment or your base.
What interiors support
- Scavenging: search rooms and industrial spaces for materials and equipment.
- Combat: confined corridors and multi-level facilities create encounters that play differently from open terrain.
- Crafting: recovered components feed the game’s construction and modification systems.
- Settlement progression: exploration supplies the projects and improvements that make settlements more capable.
- Environmental storytelling: the arrangement of objects and spaces can explain what happened without a long cutscene.
Edition and content
Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition includes the base game, six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items, according to Bethesda’s edition description. Confirm the contents on the store for your platform, since bundles can be listed differently by region.

The Commonwealth is post-apocalyptic rather than contemporary, and travel between locations is more about survival and route planning than cruising through a functioning metropolis. Its combat and progression are also more system-driven. If you want every building to reinforce a coherent modern city, Cyberpunk 2077 is the better fit; if you want interiors to produce loot, materials, enemies and settlement benefits, Fallout 4 is the stronger choice.
3. Red Dead Redemption 2: the best authored-world alternative
Why fewer interiors can feel richer
Red Dead Redemption 2 offers fewer freely enterable buildings than Fallout 4 or Cyberpunk 2077, but its interiors are carefully placed within a slower frontier simulation. Saloons, stores, homesteads, camps and train stations are tied to travel, routines and story context. A room often feels significant because of who uses it, what happened there and how the location fits into the wider journey.
The result is an authored world rather than an interior-collection checklist. You might spend time in a saloon during a mission, return to a camp between excursions, browse a store in town or investigate a homestead. These spaces support the game’s emphasis on observation and atmosphere.

Interior activities
- Social encounters: saloons, stores and stations connect you to towns and their inhabitants.
- Mission staging: story missions use interiors for planning, confrontation and aftermath.
- Camp life: the gang’s camp serves as a recurring interior-and-outdoor social hub.
- Homestead exploration: rural buildings provide contrast with crowded settlements and wilderness.
- Environmental detail: objects, workspaces and character routines make locations feel lived in.
Who should choose it
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if your ideal substitute for GTA 6 is not a denser map but a world that rewards slowing down. The game prioritizes narrative, activities and simulation. Travel itself is part of the experience, and the deliberate pace gives interiors time to register as places rather than quick combat arenas.
What to expect instead of GTA-style freedom
You will not get the same concentration of modern shops, apartments and nightlife, nor the same rapid movement between unrelated activities. Interior access is more curated, and many of the most memorable rooms are encountered through missions or established routines. That limitation is deliberate: the game’s strength is how interiors support the frontier story.
4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II: grounded medieval interiors
Why it stands apart
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II makes interiors part of daily medieval role-play. Towns, taverns, castles, homes, caves and quest locations are not simply backdrops; they are places where you gather information, pursue objectives and manage the practical demands of life in a historical setting. The first-person viewpoint emphasizes scale and proximity, while the grounded design makes a room’s function matter.
This is the least direct GTA substitute in setting and technology, but it can be the most immersive for players who enjoy entering a place and learning how it fits into a community. A tavern is a social node, a castle is a power center, a home may hold evidence or a sleeping resident, and a cave can turn an investigation into a dangerous excursion.
Interior roles
- Taverns: meet people, gather context and pursue role-playing opportunities.
- Homes and town buildings: support investigation and everyday interactions.
- Castles: frame political and quest activity in large, strongly themed locations.
- Caves: extend exploration underground and change the risks of a mission.
- Quest spaces: make interiors central to solving problems rather than optional sightseeing.
Pace and difficulty
Combat is demanding and the overall pace is measured. You need to pay attention to positioning, equipment and the situation around you rather than relying on a constant stream of arcade-style action. That can feel slow after GTA, but it rewards players who want the setting and their character’s role to shape every visit.

Best reason to pick it while waiting
Pick Kingdom Come: Deliverance II when “explorable interior” means believable spaces embedded in a functioning historical society. It offers a strong alternative to contemporary spectacle without reducing exploration to a checklist of collectibles.
5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: quest-first fantasy interiors
How interiors serve the story
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt uses villages, inns, crypts, caves, castles and other interiors as extensions of its investigations. You enter because someone needs help, a clue points underground, a political conversation requires privacy or a monster’s trail leads into a dangerous location. Interiors therefore have narrative purpose even when they are brief.
Compared with Cyberpunk 2077, the game offers less modern urban density. Compared with Fallout 4, it is less focused on turning every room into a source of crafting materials or settlement progress. Its strength is the combination of atmosphere, dialogue and quest design.
What makes its interiors memorable
- Investigations: clues and conversations guide you through homes, villages and hidden spaces.
- Fantasy variety: inns, castles, crypts and caves change the tone and stakes of exploration.
- Set-piece quests: story interiors can become combat arenas, mystery scenes or moral decision points.
- World context: rooms show how ordinary people, rulers and monsters inhabit the same world.
Who should choose it
Choose The Witcher 3 if you want interiors to deepen a quest rather than provide a modern sandbox. It is ideal for players who value investigation, conversations and atmosphere more than unrestricted building access.

How to choose based on the interior experience you want
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a modern city
Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if your mental picture is a contemporary skyline, frequent building entry and fast movement between street-level and indoor missions. The Ultimate Edition is the most complete route when Phantom Liberty and Dogtown are included.

Choose Fallout 4 for repeatable systems
Choose Fallout 4 if you want each interior to potentially improve your character, equipment, crafting supply or settlement. Its appeal grows when you enjoy opening every container, checking every terminal and deciding which recovered materials are worth carrying home.
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for atmosphere
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you are comfortable with fewer interiors in exchange for stronger staging, routines and narrative context. It suits players who want wandering itself to be rewarding.
Choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance II for immersion
Choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance II if the setting matters as much as the mechanics. Its interiors feel valuable because they belong to a believable medieval social world, but the slower pace and demanding combat are central to the experience.
Choose The Witcher 3 for investigations
Choose The Witcher 3 if you want every interior to connect to a mystery, conversation or quest decision. It is the strongest fantasy option when story purpose matters more than contemporary realism.
A practical way to use these games as a GTA 6 waiting list
- Decide whether setting or systems come first. Pick the modern city of Cyberpunk 2077, the systemic ruins of Fallout 4, the frontier of Red Dead Redemption 2, medieval Bohemia in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II or the fantasy North of The Witcher 3.
- Match the pace to your available play time. Cyberpunk 2077 supports quick, action-heavy sessions; Red Dead Redemption 2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II reward longer, unhurried sessions; Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 sit between those extremes because exploration can be paused between objectives.
- Check the edition before buying. Verify the platform listing. The complete Cyberpunk 2077 route includes Phantom Liberty, while Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition bundles the base game with six expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items.
- Use interiors as your personal test. In the first few hours, notice whether you prefer authored spaces that advance a story or systemic spaces that produce loot, combat and upgrades. That response is a better guide than map size alone.
- Switch only when the mismatch is clear. If a modern city is essential, move to Cyberpunk 2077; if you want a more reactive scavenging loop, move to Fallout 4; if you want slower storytelling, try Red Dead Redemption 2; if realism or fantasy investigations are the draw, choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance II or The Witcher 3.
What these recommendations cannot promise
None of these games provides a verified total of every enterable building, and none should be judged by a fictional building count. “Interior density” depends on how you play: a quest-focused player may see fewer optional rooms than a scavenger, while a player who follows only the main story may miss the locations that make Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3 feel expansive.
They also differ in how much freedom an interior provides. Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 4 put more emphasis on action and systems inside buildings. Red Dead Redemption 2 emphasizes authored scenes and routines. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II makes interiors part of role-play and investigation. The Witcher 3 uses them to deliver quests and atmosphere. Pick according to that distinction rather than expecting one game to reproduce GTA 6 before it exists.
