Open-world games can still have a clear main story. The best fits for players who prefer a strong narrative through-line give you an identifiable goal to pursue while leaving room to explore. These picks range from direct character-driven adventures to role-playing games and a more mysterious, player-led journey; none is being recommended as a short campaign.
How to choose an open-world game with a focused story
“Focused” here means the main story has a legible central objective, not that the game is brief or that every activity advances the plot. Optional exploration and side activities can expand any open-world playthrough. Consider three things before choosing: how plainly the central goal is stated, how much the game expects you to discover for yourself, and whether you want an action adventure, a role-playing game, or exploratory action RPG.

Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei: character-driven samurai stories
For a samurai adventure with a clear character goal, start with Ghost of Tsushima or its successor, Ghost of Yōtei. PlayStation describes Yōtei as a standalone story set 300 years after Tsushima, following Atsu as she pursues those who murdered her family. Elden Ring: discovery before signposting
Elden Ring is a qualified fit: it offers a world of secrets and mysteries, but it is less tightly signposted than the story-led picks above.
