The safest way to choose is to define what you want to avoid, then read the current rating summary for the exact game, platform, edition and region. A missing sexual-content descriptor means only that the descriptor was not listed by that rating source—not that the game contains none.
Two frequently mentioned open-world candidates, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, are identified as open-world games in a 2026 roundup, but the evidence here does not establish their sexual-content levels. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a clear contrast: its ESRB summary lists Nudity and Sexual Content, so it should not be treated as a low-sexual-content pick.

This guide is therefore a verification method as much as a shortlist. It helps adults looking for open-world games without sex scenes, games with no nudity, or games like Skyrim but with less sexual content distinguish a confirmed detail from an assumption.
Start by defining “less sexual content”
Adults use this phrase to mean different things. Before comparing games, decide which threshold matters to you:
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
- Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
- Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
- No sexual scenes: You want to avoid depicted sexual activity, even if brief or optional.
- No nudity: Partial or full nudity is the deciding factor, regardless of whether a scene is sexual.
- Minimal references: Dialogue, jokes, advertisements or quest themes may be acceptable, but repeated sexual references are not.
- Less than a known comparison: You may be comfortable with some mature material but want substantially less than a game such as Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Low overall maturity: You also want limited violence, language, drug use or disturbing themes. That is a broader requirement than sexual content alone.
These thresholds produce different answers. A game can contain no sexual scenes but still include suggestive dialogue. Another can have mild references but graphic violence. Treat sexual content as its own category instead of using “family-friendly” or “mature” as a shortcut.
Write the rule down before browsing. “No nudity and no depicted sexual behavior; romance and occasional nonsexual affection are acceptable” is measurable. “I want a clean open world” is too vague to test consistently, especially when one player counts innuendo and another does not.
Why the age category is not enough
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) describes rating categories as signals of suggested age appropriateness, not a ranking of one specific type of content. Its E10+ category can include minimal suggestive themes, while an M (Mature 17+) rating may include sexual content. The category tells you the broad audience, not how often sexual material appears or whether it is optional.

ESRB separates several descriptors:
- Sexual Content: non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, which can include partial nudity.
- Sexual Themes: references to sex or sexuality.
- Suggestive Themes: mild provocative references or materials.
ESRB says that content descriptors indicate material that may have triggered a rating or may be of interest or concern. It also says descriptors are applied relative to the assigned rating category and are not intended to be a complete listing of content. Consequently, the absence of “Sexual Content” or “Nudity” is not proof that a game has none. When an ESRB rating summary is available, read the summary for context rather than stopping at the category line.
The descriptors also work in relation to the category assigned. “Suggestive Themes” on an E10+ game is not automatically equivalent to “Sexual Content” on an M-rated game, and neither label tells you the exact number of scenes. Compare the wording within each game’s summary instead of treating labels as a universal severity scale.
What can be established about notable open-world candidates
The evidence supports identifying games for follow-up, not certifying them as low-sexual-content recommendations. The table keeps those two decisions separate.
| Game | Open-world evidence | Sexual-content evidence available here | Other maturity considerations | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | A 2026 GamesRadar roundup identifies it as an open-world game and highlights exploration and creative play. | No direct, current regional rating summary was established here. Do not label it “no sex,” “no nudity” or “low sexual content” without checking the relevant rating source. | Its overall age suitability still depends on the current regional rating and the reader’s tolerance for fantasy combat and peril. | Promising candidate for verification, not a confirmed fit. |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | The same 2026 roundup includes it among open-world games. | No direct sexual-content judgment is established here. A missing descriptor must be reported as “not listed by this rating source,” not as evidence of absence. | Check the exact edition and platform, especially when comparing an original release with later editions. | Candidate for follow-up only. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Not used here as a recommendation. | ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+) and lists Nudity and Sexual Content. The rating summary describes nudity and brief sexual content. | The M rating also reflects other mature material. Low sexual content is not a defensible description. | Use as a clearly labeled contrast or exclude from a low-sexual-content shortlist. |
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
This is a sensible title to investigate if you want exploration, discovery and creative systems rather than a crime drama built around adult relationships. However, the fact that a roundup praises its open-world design says nothing by itself about nudity, sexual references or suggestive material. Verify the rating summary for your country and platform before treating it as suitable for a strict “no sex scenes” requirement.

Do not let a bright art style or fantasy setting substitute for a rating check. Those features describe presentation and genre, not the presence or absence of a particular descriptor. Record the exact edition you intend to purchase, then compare its listing with your personal rule.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim often appears in searches for games with large maps, quests and player freedom. That makes it a useful comparison point for readers searching for “games like Skyrim but with less sexual content.” The evidence here confirms its open-world status but does not establish a sexual-content level. Check the exact release you plan to play and read its rating summary instead of transferring assumptions from another edition or region.
Rank #2
- The Legend of Zelda - Tears of the Kingdom
Its reputation, age and many re-releases make edition matching especially important. A listing for one platform or regional board should not automatically be treated as the listing for another. If you cannot find a current summary for the product in your cart, mark the result unverified rather than filling the gap with memory or forum claims.
Red Dead Redemption 2 as a boundary case
This game demonstrates why a mature open-world reputation should not be treated as a vague impression. The ESRB listing specifically names Nudity and Sexual Content and describes brief sexual content in its summary. If your requirement is no nudity or no sexual scenes, that is enough to remove it from consideration, regardless of how much you enjoy its world or story.

How to verify a game before buying
Use this process for every candidate. It takes longer than scanning an age number, but it prevents the most common mistake: treating an incomplete descriptor list as a guarantee.
- Identify the exact product. Record the title, edition, platform and intended region. Remasters, expansions and ports can have different listings or summaries.
- Open the official rating entry for that region. For a United States purchase, start with the ESRB entry. If you are elsewhere, use the applicable local board as well; a US result does not automatically describe a PEGI or other regional release.
- Read every relevant descriptor. Look for Sexual Content, Nudity, Sexual Themes and Suggestive Themes. Also note violence, language, drugs and other descriptors separately.
- Read the narrative summary. Look for what is actually depicted, whether nudity is partial or full, how explicit the behavior is, and whether the material is brief, recurring, optional or unavoidable.
- Classify the result against your personal threshold. “No nudity” is stricter than “no explicit scenes.” “Minimal references” is different from both. Write down the rule before comparing games so that an attractive setting does not quietly change your standard.
- Check optional content. If the summary describes an optional activity, side quest or location, decide whether you can skip it and whether skipping still leaves mandatory references elsewhere.
- Recheck after major editions or expansions. A base-game listing does not automatically cover downloadable story content. Review each expansion if you intend to play it.
Take a screenshot or note the date of the listing you checked. Ratings and product pages can be updated, and a retailer’s short badge may omit the explanatory text. A dated note lets you repeat the check if you buy a sequel, port or complete edition later.
Use a content matrix instead of one “maturity” score
A simple matrix keeps different concerns from being blended together. Fill it from the rating summary and, where the summary is silent, mark the cell as “not stated by this rating source.” Do not convert that wording into “none.”

|---|---|---|
| Explicit sexual scenes | Does the summary describe depicted sexual behavior? | This is the deciding factor for readers avoiding sex scenes entirely. |
| Nudity | Does it mention partial or full nudity? | Nudity can appear outside an explicitly sexual scene. |
| Sexual references | Are sexual themes, jokes or dialogue mentioned? | Readers who want minimal references may reject a game that has no scenes but frequent jokes. |
| Frequency | Is the material described as brief, occasional or recurring? | A single optional moment is a different experience from content encountered throughout the main story. |
| Context | Is it presented in dialogue, a cutscene, an environment or a side activity? | Context helps you decide whether it is avoidable and whether it may surprise you. |
| Optionality | Can the player skip it without blocking progression? | Optional material may still matter if you want a completely clean playthrough, but it affects practical avoidance. |
| Violence and gore | What combat or injury details are listed? | Low sexual content does not mean low overall maturity. |
| Language and substances | Are strong language, alcohol, drugs or gambling listed? | These can be more prominent than sexual material in an otherwise suitable game. |
Keep “not stated” visually distinct from “no.” A green checkmark implies certainty; a gray unknown cell accurately reflects the limits of the rating entry. If you share the table with another adult, explain the threshold used so that a disagreement about romance or innuendo does not look like a factual contradiction.
Choose the right threshold for your household
If you need no sexual scenes
Reject any rating summary that explicitly describes sexual behavior, then investigate entries that list Sexual Themes or Suggestive Themes. Those descriptors do not prove a scene exists, but they signal that references or provocative material may be present. If the summary is unavailable, the game remains unverified rather than approved.
If you need no nudity
Search specifically for the Nudity descriptor and read the summary for partial-nudity details. Do not assume that a game without Sexual Content has no nudity; the two categories are not interchangeable.

If brief references are acceptable
You may accept a title with Sexual Themes or Suggestive Themes if the summary indicates limited references and no depicted behavior. Decide in advance whether jokes, innuendo, romance or suggestive advertising count as disqualifying for you.
If you simply want less than a mature crime game
Use Red Dead Redemption 2 only as a comparison point, not as a numerical benchmark. Its ESRB summary establishes Nudity and Sexual Content, but it does not create a standardized “amount” that can be measured against another game. Compare the wording, context and frequency descriptions title by title.
Do not confuse low sexual content with low overall maturity
An open-world game can satisfy a no-sex preference while still being unsuitable for a particular player because of violence, frightening scenes, cruelty, strong language or substance use. Keep those categories visible in your notes. For example, a game may have no listed sexual descriptor but still carry an M rating because of graphic violence. Conversely, an E10+ game may include minimal suggestive themes even though its overall content is less intense.
ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+. That market-wide figure describes rating-category distribution; it does not measure sexual content and cannot be used to infer that most open-world games meet your preference.
Platform controls can help with purchasing or play time, but they do not rewrite a game’s scenes. Do not present parental controls, a muted audio setting or a skipped cutscene as proof that the underlying content is absent. They may reduce exposure in a particular playthrough, while the rating summary still describes the product as sold.
What to do when a descriptor is missing
Use precise language: “sexual content not listed by this rating source.” That statement preserves what the rating actually tells you. Avoid stronger claims such as “clean,” “sex-free” or “no nudity” unless the publisher or rating summary explicitly supports them.
If the stakes are high—for example, a shared family console, a workplace device or a personal trigger—look for a full rating summary and independent spoiler-controlled content guide before purchase. The rating board’s own warning that descriptors are not complete means a short label cannot answer every edge case.
When two official systems disagree, do not average their labels. Record each board, region and date, then use the stricter rule that matches your household. A US ESRB result cannot be silently substituted for a PEGI or other regional result, and a retailer’s imported edition may not correspond to the local listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical shortlist workflow
- Write your rule in one sentence: for example, “No nudity and no depicted sexual behavior; brief romantic dialogue is acceptable.”
- Collect three to five open-world candidates. Use genre coverage such as fantasy exploration, sandbox role-playing or historical adventure, but do not treat genre as a content guarantee.
- Build the matrix. Enter only what the current rating summary states. Mark unknown cells as not stated.
- Remove disqualifying entries. For a strict rule, any confirmed nudity or sexual behavior is enough to remove a title.
- Confirm optionality. If acceptable candidates contain references, determine whether they are avoidable and whether the main campaign still includes them.
- Check your edition and region one last time. Buy only after the listing matches the product in your cart.
Apply the same process to expansions, season passes and complete editions. A bundle can include additional story content whose rating information is presented separately. If you plan to play online or use user-created content, treat that as a separate exposure question rather than assuming the base-game summary covers every player-made addition.

Bottom line for the three titles discussed here
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are reasonable open-world games to investigate, but the rating evidence here does not justify promising either as a low-sexual-content game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a fit for a strict low-sexual-content list because its ESRB entry explicitly includes Nudity and Sexual Content. For every other candidate, verify the exact rating summary and treat unlisted material as unknown rather than absent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an E10+ or Teen rating guarantee no sex scenes?
No. ESRB categories indicate suggested age appropriateness, not a complete inventory of sexual material. E10+ can include minimal suggestive themes, and descriptors are not intended to be complete.
Is a game without the Nudity descriptor guaranteed to have no nudity?
No. Report it as “nudity not listed by this rating source.” Read the full rating summary for the exact region, platform and edition before treating it as suitable.
Why is Red Dead Redemption 2 used as a contrast?
Its ESRB entry explicitly lists Nudity and Sexual Content and describes brief sexual content. That makes it a clear boundary case for readers who want no nudity or no sexual scenes.
Can I call Skyrim a low-sexual-content game?
Not from the evidence established here. Its open-world status is documented, but a current direct sexual-content judgment still requires checking the exact edition and regional rating summary.
What should I check besides sexual descriptors?
Record violence and gore, language, substances, frightening themes and other maturity descriptors separately. Low sexual content does not mean low overall maturity.
Does optional content count if I can skip it?
That depends on your threshold. Mark whether the summary describes an optional quest, activity or location, then determine whether mandatory dialogue or scenes remain elsewhere. Optionality changes avoidance, not the existence of the content.
Which rating source should I use outside the United States?
Use the rating board applicable to your region, such as PEGI where relevant, and match the result to the edition and platform you will buy. A US ESRB listing does not automatically describe another regional release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the official rating summary is unavailable?
Keep the title unverified. Do not convert a missing summary or descriptor into “none”; look for a reliable, spoiler-controlled content guide and reassess when an official listing is available.
The Bottom Line
For adults seeking open-world games with less sexual content, the reliable approach is verification rather than an age-label shortcut. Investigate The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but do not promise either as a clean or low-sexual-content choice without checking the current regional summary. Exclude Red Dead Redemption 2 from a strict list because its ESRB entry names Nudity and Sexual Content. Compare scenes, nudity, references, frequency, context and optionality, while keeping violence and other mature themes in separate columns.
