Forza Horizon 5 is the safest all-round choice while you wait for GTA 6. Its Mexico map mixes deserts, jungles, cities, ruins, beaches, canyons and a snow-capped volcano with hundreds of cars, co-op, competitive events and player-created races. Choose Need for Speed Unbound instead if you mainly want stylized street racing, police pressure and deep visual customization. Choose The Crew Motorfest if a festival structure, social play and continuing seasonal additions matter most.
Forza Horizon 6 is the game to watch for a newer-generation alternative: its Japan setting includes Tokyo City and more than 550 real-world cars. It is playable on Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the PlayStation 5 version is scheduled for January 26, 2027. That timing makes it a future option rather than the immediate answer for every GTA fan.

The short answer: which game fits your GTA 6 wait?
There is no one-to-one replacement for Grand Theft Auto. These games focus on driving first, so they do not reproduce GTA’s combination of crime missions, shooting, pedestrians, property systems and free-form city chaos. They do, however, cover the parts many players want between GTA sessions: cruising through a large map, collecting cars, racing friends, discovering scenery and building a personal driving routine.
| Game | Best for | World and driving style | Content outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forza Horizon 5 | Most players; cruising plus racing | Open Mexico, accessible festival “simcade” handling, road and off-road variety | Mature library with more than 40 content updates, expansions and community events |
| Need for Speed Unbound | Street-racing atmosphere, police chases and customization | Urban free roam with a stylized visual identity and high-risk pursuits | Content-complete purchase; Electronic Arts announced no further updates after the 2024 cycle |
| The Crew Motorfest | Festival playlists, social driving and variety | Hawaii festival setting with cars and other vehicle-focused activities | Still receiving seasonal support; Ubisoft has published a Year 4 roadmap |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Players who want Japan, Tokyo and a newer platform focus | Japan, including Tokyo City, with more than 550 real-world cars | Playable on Xbox Series X|S and PC; PlayStation 5 launch scheduled for January 26, 2027 |
If you want one purchase without overthinking it, start with Forza Horizon 5. Its broad map and activity mix mean you can race seriously, take a relaxed drive, play cooperatively or create your own event without committing to one narrow style.

Forza Horizon 5: the best all-round substitute
Why it earns the default recommendation
Forza Horizon 5 has the most balanced answer to the usual GTA-waiting question: “Where can I drive around for an hour and still find something to do?” The open world is set in Mexico and spans sharply different environments instead of repeating one city block. You can move from desert roads to jungle routes, historic urban areas, coastal beaches, canyon passes and volcanic terrain. The variety changes the feel of a drive even when you are not following a race objective.
The official game description highlights “hundreds of the world’s greatest cars” and more than 40 content updates adding cars, races, features and other gameplay experiences. That makes the game unusually easy to recommend to a mixed group: one person can tune a road car, another can take an off-road truck, and both can find activities suited to those choices.
What you can do in the world
- Free driving: explore Mexico at your own pace, switching between paved roads, dirt routes and cross-country terrain.
- Solo progression: work through festival activities and unlock more events, cars and challenges.
- Co-op: join friends for shared driving and cooperative activities.
- Competitive play: race other players when you want a more structured session.
- EventLab: use player-created events and custom rules for experiences beyond the standard race catalog.
- Expansion content: the Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure expansions add separate themed activities and environments.
That range is the closest match here to GTA’s “make your own evening” quality, even though the activities are built around motorsport rather than crime. You can set a route, chase a leaderboard, join a group or simply test different cars on roads you have not yet learned.
Driving feel and accessibility
Forza Horizon 5 sits in an accessible “simcade” space. Cars have recognizable differences in acceleration, grip, braking and off-road ability, but you do not need a racing-wheel setup or a full knowledge of real-world vehicle dynamics to enjoy it. Assists can make driving forgiving; removing them creates more demanding races when you want precision.
This balance matters for a GTA audience. GTA’s driving is intentionally approachable and dramatic, while a dedicated simulator can feel like work if you only want to cruise. Forza Horizon 5 lets you begin casually and add complexity through tuning, difficulty and car choice instead of forcing one level of realism.
Where it falls short for GTA fans
The game does not provide a criminal story, gunplay, civilian traffic interactions or a dense urban sandbox built around missions. Its social spaces and races are designed around a festival. If police pursuits, illegal street-racing drama and visual style are the main reason you play GTA’s driving sequences, Need for Speed Unbound is a better fit.
Forza Horizon 5 is also a mature game. That is good for quantity and stability, but players seeking a brand-new progression system or a constantly reinvented launch experience may prefer to wait for Forza Horizon 6 or follow Motorfest’s seasonal roadmap.

Need for Speed Unbound: choose it for street racing and police pressure
The strongest stylistic alternative
Need for Speed Unbound is the specialist pick. Its appeal comes from a more stylized street-racing presentation, a city-focused free-roam environment and the tension of trying to earn money while avoiding police attention. It feels more like an illegal racing fantasy than a festival motorsport game, which makes it the closest choice for players who associate GTA driving with risk, pursuit and attitude rather than scenic exploration.
The game supports free roam, player-versus-player activities and Lockdown scenarios. Those modes give you different reasons to leave a garage: cruise and discover the map, compete directly against other players or take a higher-pressure run where escaping with a valuable car is the objective.
Lockdown, Hot Rides and the pursuit loop
Lockdown revolves around breaking into lockups, taking Hot Rides and escaping before the police threat overwhelms you. Electronic Arts specifically lists Racer X’s BMW M3 GTR and 15 rides inspired by Most Wanted’s Blacklist. That connection gives longtime Need for Speed players a recognizable collectible goal while retaining the modern game’s risk-and-reward structure.
Police pressure changes how you drive. A normal race rewards clean lines and speed; a pursuit asks you to plan escape routes, manage exposure and decide when a valuable car is worth the danger. If you enjoy the moment in GTA when a routine drive turns into an improvised chase, Unbound builds that feeling into its central loop.

Customization and visual identity
Unbound offers extensive cosmetic customization, allowing you to shape both the car and the look of your character and racing setup. Its visual style deliberately mixes realistic vehicles with animated effects, giving races a distinctive presentation that is unlike the more naturalistic festival worlds in the Forza games.
That style is a strength if you want a game with an immediate personality. It can be a drawback if you prefer a straightforward simulation-like presentation or want every car to look factory-authentic. The choice is aesthetic as much as mechanical.
What its update status means when buying
Electronic Arts’ page records a February 3, 2025 “END OF KAIZEN REVIEW” notice announcing that no more updates were planned after the 2024 content cycle. Treat Unbound as a content-complete purchase rather than an actively expanding live service. You receive a defined set of modes and customization systems, not a promise of another year of new playlists, cars or features.

That can be positive for a buyer who dislikes seasonal obligations. You can learn the systems and finish the available progression without worrying that the game will change underneath you. It is less attractive if your main reason for buying is a continuous stream of new content.
The Crew Motorfest: the ongoing festival option
Why it suits social and playlist-driven players
The Crew Motorfest is built around a festival structure, with playlists that organize themed driving experiences and encourage you to sample different vehicle types. Its Hawaii setting provides a colorful backdrop for road trips, races and group activities, and the game is aimed at players who enjoy moving between curated events rather than following one linear campaign.
Compared with Forza Horizon 5, Motorfest puts more emphasis on the festival program itself and on the sense that the game is a continuing service. Compared with Need for Speed Unbound, it is less focused on police tension and street-racing drama. The result is a useful middle ground for people who want a social driving hub with regular additions.
Seasonal support and Year 4
Ubisoft’s September 17, 2026 showcase lists a Year 4 roadmap that includes a new free island, Kauai, a Tomb Raider downloadable-content pack, new vehicles, Semi-Trucks and TrackForge updates. These announcements matter because they show that Motorfest is still being developed as an evolving game rather than a finished release with no planned expansion.
Seasonal support is a benefit if you want a reason to return after completing the initial playlists. It also creates a trade-off: the most relevant content can be tied to a schedule, and the full experience may be harder to understand if you join midway through several seasons. Check the current in-game calendar and regional store description before buying, because available bundles and included content can change.
Vehicle variety beyond ordinary car racing
Motorfest’s appeal is not limited to one class of road car. Its playlists and updates are designed around variety, and the announced Semi-Trucks addition shows how the game continues to broaden the types of driving it supports. That makes it a good choice for a group with different tastes: one player can prefer performance cars while another wants unusual machinery or a themed event.
The same breadth can feel less focused than Unbound’s street-racing identity or Forza’s broad but coherent festival handling. If you want a single driving fantasy executed consistently, choose the specialist that matches you. If you enjoy sampling several fantasies in one hub, Motorfest is more convincing.

Forza Horizon 6: the Japan and Tokyo option to watch
What is confirmed
Forza Horizon 6 is the newest option in this group, with Japan as its setting and Tokyo City included in the world. The official page lists more than 550 real-world cars. It is playable now on Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the PlayStation 5 version is scheduled for January 26, 2027.
That platform timing is important. If you are on Xbox Series X|S or PC, FH6 is the newer-generation alternative to FH5. If you are on PS5 and want to play immediately, the scheduled date means you need another game for the interim. Retail availability, physical editions and regional listings can differ, so verify the store page for your country before pre-ordering or planning a purchase around the PS5 launch.

Who should wait for it?
Choose FH6 as the game to watch if Japan, Tokyo and a larger headline car list matter more to you than buying a mature, established package today. It should also appeal to players who want a current-generation Horizon setting rather than returning to an older festival map.
Do not assume that a newer setting automatically makes it a better GTA substitute. The same basic distinction remains: Horizon is about driving, events and exploration, not crime missions or an interactive city simulation. Its value depends on whether the Japan setting and new car roster are worth waiting for on your platform.

Pick by the kind of GTA-style freedom you want
“I want to cruise and discover scenery”
Pick Forza Horizon 5 for the broadest immediate choice. Mexico’s contrasting biomes make a long drive feel like an outing rather than a repeated city loop. Motorfest is a strong alternative if Hawaii’s festival atmosphere appeals more, while FH6 is the future choice for Japan and Tokyo.
“I want police chases and street-racing tension”
Pick Need for Speed Unbound. Its free-roam, PVP and Lockdown activities are designed around the pressure of earning a valuable run and escaping pursuit. Neither Horizon title nor Motorfest is built around that same police-threat fantasy.
“I want to play with friends”
Forza Horizon 5 offers co-op, competitive modes and player-created EventLab activities, giving a group several ways to spend an evening. Motorfest is also compelling if your group prefers playlists and social festival sessions. Confirm the current online requirements for your platform before purchase; the exact subscription rules depend on the console ecosystem and store region.

“I want to keep getting new content”
Choose The Crew Motorfest based on Ubisoft’s published Year 4 support. Forza Horizon 5 has an extensive mature catalog, but its value is the amount already available rather than a newly announced long-term roadmap. Unbound is the wrong choice for this specific priority because its official page records the end of planned updates.
“I want the biggest stated car roster”
Forza Horizon 6 has the clearest published figure: more than 550 real-world cars. Forza Horizon 5 is described as having hundreds of cars, while the other two games emphasize different strengths rather than publishing a directly comparable total in the available information. Do not treat these descriptions as an apples-to-apples audited count; editions, downloadable content and regional availability can affect what you can access.
Buying and platform checks before you decide
- Check your platform first. FH6 is available on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with PS5 scheduled for January 26, 2027. Confirm every game’s current console and PC listing in your region.
- Check which edition includes expansions. FH5’s Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure content may be sold separately or bundled, so compare the contents of each edition rather than assuming the base game includes both.
- Decide whether you need an active roadmap. Motorfest has a published Year 4 plan; Unbound is content-complete. That difference affects how much value you place on future additions.
- Check online access requirements. Co-op, PVP, community events and seasonal features may require a platform subscription or an internet connection. Store pages provide the current regional terms.
- Consider storage and download size. Open-world racing games and expansions can be large. Check the platform listing before installing, especially if you plan to keep multiple games available for quick sessions.
- Choose the driving fantasy, not just the map. Mexico, Hawaii, Japan and an urban street-racing setting are visually different, but the bigger decision is whether you want festival freedom, street-racing risk or a live seasonal structure.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Expecting a direct GTA replacement
None of these games reproduces GTA’s full sandbox. They are driving games with exploration and social systems, not crime simulators. Buy one for its driving loop and you are more likely to be satisfied than if you expect a substitute for every GTA activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfusing a large map with a dense city
Forza Horizon 5’s map is varied and expansive, but much of its appeal comes from natural terrain and open roads. A player who wants constant urban streets, police encounters and tight shortcuts may prefer Unbound’s setting. Read the world descriptions above as different design priorities, not a ranking of map size.
Assuming seasonal support is permanent
Motorfest’s Year 4 announcements establish planned additions, not an unlimited guarantee of future seasons. Live-service schedules can change, and content may be distributed through updates, expansions or timed events. Use the current Ubisoft listing and in-game calendar for the latest availability.
Buying the wrong edition
Racing games often have multiple bundles that combine the base game, car packs and expansions. Before checkout, list the exact features you want—such as Hot Wheels, Rally Adventure or a particular vehicle pack—and verify that the edition includes them in your region.
Verdict
Buy Forza Horizon 5 if you want the most complete immediate answer: a varied Mexico map, hundreds of cars, solo and multiplayer options, custom events and a large established library. Buy Need for Speed Unbound for stylized street racing, police pressure and customization, accepting that its planned update cycle has ended. Buy The Crew Motorfest for playlists, social festival play and an announced Year 4 roadmap. Keep Forza Horizon 6 on your shortlist if Japan and Tokyo are the priority, especially on Xbox Series X|S or PC; PS5 players should note the January 26, 2027 scheduled launch.
