There is no single best open-weight model for everyone. Choose the strongest model whose weights and KV cache fit your hardware and whose license permits your use. On a roughly 32GB GPU, current comparisons put Devstral Small 2 and Qwen3.8-27B in the practical coding tier. With about 128GB of memory, Qwen3-Coder-Next and gpt-oss-120b become realistic candidates, while the largest models generally need multiple GPUs, server hardware, or a private GPU-cloud instance.

For writing and mixed workloads, compare Gemma, Qwen, Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, and gpt-oss on language quality, context length, tool calling, memory use, and the exact license for the release you intend to deploy. “Open-weight” means you can download trained parameters and run inference on infrastructure you control; it does not automatically mean unrestricted open-source rights.

Which model should you start with?

Your first decision is your memory budget, not a leaderboard position. Model size, numerical precision, quantization, context length, and the KV cache all affect whether a local session is usable.

Available memory Best starting candidates Typical fit What to expect
About 24–32GB of GPU memory Devstral Small 2; Qwen3.8-27B Local coding, code explanation, smaller repository tasks Practical single-workstation tier; leave headroom for the runtime and KV cache
About 128GB of system or combined GPU memory Qwen3-Coder-Next; gpt-oss-120b More demanding coding, reasoning, and longer-context work Usually requires a high-memory workstation, several GPUs, or a private server
Consumer GPU with aggressive quantization Smaller Gemma, Qwen, Llama, Mistral, or DeepSeek releases Writing, chat, summarization, and moderate coding Lower memory demand, with possible quality and throughput trade-offs
More than one GPU or private GPU cloud Large DeepSeek, Llama, Mistral, Qwen, or mixture-of-experts releases Maximum capability and long-context workloads Higher cost, setup complexity, power use, and operational overhead

These are deployment tiers rather than universal rankings. A model that wins one benchmark can lose on your repository, language, prompt style, quantization level, or hardware. VDF AI’s 2026 local-coding comparison uses roughly 32GB and 128GB tiers; treat those figures as planning guidance, not a guarantee that every release in a tier will fit.

What “open-weight” actually gives you

Open weights are downloadable parameter files. You can place them on a workstation or server you control and run inference without sending every prompt to a hosted API. That can keep source code, drafts, and private documents inside your environment.

Weights are not the same thing as an unrestricted open-source license. Llama 4 and Gemma 3 are commonly described as open-weight families with additional license conditions. Mistral terms vary by release. For Qwen and DeepSeek, read the license attached to the exact checkpoint, not a family-level description. Confirm whether commercial use, redistribution, modification, attribution, and acceptable-use clauses fit your project.

Model families by workload

Qwen: the broadest size ladder

Qwen offers general-purpose and coding models across many sizes, making it useful when you want to start small and scale without changing families. Qwen3.8-27B is identified in current comparisons as a practical coding option around the 32GB-GPU tier. Qwen3-Coder-Next is a candidate when you have about 128GB of memory and need more repository-level reasoning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the release card for context length, tool or function-calling support, quantization files, and license text. A convenient size does not remove the need to test your programming languages, build system, and code style.

Gemma: strong quality at smaller sizes

Google’s official Gemma material compares Gemma with Qwen, gpt-oss, Mistral, DeepSeek, GLM, and Kimi, and presents competitive quality at smaller sizes, including configurations aimed at consumer GPUs. Gemma is therefore a sensible writing and mixed-workload candidate when memory is limited.

Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.

Gemma 3 has additional license conditions. Before commercial self-hosting, read the specific Gemma license and any use-policy documents distributed with the checkpoint. Test multilingual output and tone control directly; “small” does not mean identical behavior across languages.

Llama: mature tooling and a large ecosystem

Llama models have downloadable weights and a large ecosystem of integrations, prompting examples, and inference runtimes. That ecosystem can reduce setup friction, especially when a desktop client or server already supports the selected release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Llama 4 license contains conditions beyond a simple permissive open-source license. Keep the license file with the weights, record the exact version, and obtain an internal review before embedding a Llama checkpoint in a customer-facing product.

Mistral: options from compact to large deployments

Mistral provides small and large open-weight choices. Compact releases can suit local writing and coding; larger releases may need multi-GPU infrastructure. Do not infer permissions from the family name: Mistral’s terms vary by release, so the model card and license shipped with your chosen checkpoint control your rights.

DeepSeek: reasoning and coding, with a memory cost

DeepSeek is a strong candidate for reasoning-heavy and coding tasks in current comparisons. Larger variants can require substantial memory, particularly when you use a long context or a large batch. A quantized file may fit where full-precision weights do not, but measure speed and answer quality on your own workload.

gpt-oss: long context and Apache 2.0 terms

gpt-oss is reported as an Apache 2.0 mixture-of-experts family with a 131,072-token context window in an OpenAI report from 2025. Its design target includes consumer-GPU deployment, although the practical memory requirement depends on the exact release, quantization, context, and runtime.

An Apache 2.0 license generally permits commercial use, modification, and distribution subject to its notice and attribution requirements. Verify the exact release card before relying on that conclusion, and preserve the license and notices in any redistribution. The 120B-class variant is listed as a candidate around 128GB of memory rather than a typical 24GB desktop card.

How to compare models for coding

Repository-level coding is more than generating a short function. Evaluate the complete loop your team uses.

  • Implementation accuracy: Can the model produce code that passes your tests without repeated correction?
  • Repository reasoning: Can it identify relevant files, follow local conventions, and make a coherent multi-file change?
  • Debugging: Does it interpret stack traces and propose a reproducible fix rather than guessing?
  • Tool use: Can your runtime expose file search, terminal, test, and function tools reliably?
  • Context behavior: Does quality remain stable when you include the amount of code your project actually needs?
  • Latency and throughput: Is interactive response fast enough for your workflow, and can the model serve concurrent users?

Run a small, fixed suite from your own repositories: one feature, one bug, one refactor, one test-writing task, and one documentation task. Record model version, prompt, context length, quantization, hardware, runtime, and date. Do not present a score as a universal ranking when those conditions differ.

  • Multilingual fluency and preservation of names, measurements, and formatting.
  • Long-document coherence when the model must remember a style guide or reference materials.
  • Tool and structured-output support when you need JSON, tables, or a publishing workflow.

Gemma, Qwen, Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, and gpt-oss can all be reasonable starting points. The best choice depends on the language, editorial style, context length, and latency you require. Compare identical prompts and the same quantization; a larger model is not automatically a better editor if it is too slow to use or frequently runs out of memory.

Memory, quantization, and context planning

Weight size is only the beginning. Runtime overhead, the KV cache, temporary activations, and other processes consume memory. A model that technically loads may still fail when you paste a large repository or increase the context window.

What quantization changes

Quantization stores weights at lower numerical precision to reduce memory use. It can make a model practical on a consumer GPU, but quality, speed, and stability can change. Compare the same task at the quantization you plan to deploy; results from full precision do not automatically describe a 4-bit build.

Why context length matters

A long context window increases the KV-cache requirement as the conversation or document grows. The gpt-oss report lists a 131,072-token context window, but that headline number does not mean a desktop GPU can hold 131,072 tokens at full speed. Your runtime may impose a lower limit, and usable capacity depends on memory and concurrent sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware reference points

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specification lists 24GB of GPU memory. A March 2026 self-hosting guide says an Apache 2.0 model runs comfortably on an RTX 4090 in 4-bit quantization while handling coding, reasoning, and everyday language tasks. That is a cited configuration, not a promise that every Apache 2.0 model or every context length will fit.

Plan for headroom rather than filling every byte:

  • Reserve memory for the operating system, display, runtime, and other applications.
  • Reduce context length or concurrency before assuming the model is defective.
  • Use system RAM or multiple GPUs only when your runtime supports the required split efficiently.
  • Expect the largest mixture-of-experts systems to need server hardware or rented private GPU capacity.

A practical local-deployment workflow

  1. Define the workload. Write down the languages, repository size, document length, response format, latency target, number of users, and whether tool calling is mandatory.
  2. Set a memory ceiling. Measure available GPU and system memory, then reserve space for the KV cache and runtime. Start with the 32GB or 128GB tier that matches your machine.
  3. Choose an exact checkpoint. Record the family, release name, parameter count, context limit, quantization, and license. Do not download a similarly named file from an untrusted mirror.
  4. Select a runtime. Check current support for the checkpoint in llama.cpp, vLLM, Ollama, or your desktop client. Compatibility changes, so verify the runtime’s release notes and model documentation for the version you install.
  5. Load a conservative context. Begin below the advertised maximum, run a short prompt, and watch memory use, tokens per second, and errors before increasing context or concurrency.
  6. Test representative tasks. Use private, sanitized coding and writing prompts. Check compilation, tests, factual accuracy, formatting, and multilingual output rather than relying on a generic chat impression.
  7. Harden the service. Bind the interface only where needed, require authentication for network access, encrypt storage, restrict logs, and update the operating system and runtime.
  8. Document the deployment. Keep the model card, license, hashes, quantization details, configuration, and evaluation notes with the deployment so another operator can reproduce it.

Privacy: better control, not an absolute guarantee

When weights and inference run on owned hardware, prompts and source code can remain inside your network instead of being routinely transferred to an external API. That is a meaningful privacy improvement for confidential software, internal documents, and regulated data.

Local inference does not eliminate risk. An operating-system compromise, malicious extension, runtime telemetry, verbose logs, cloud backups, remote administration, or an untrusted model file can still expose data. Review where the client writes prompts, completions, crash reports, and caches. Disable telemetry where the software permits it, protect model files from tampering, segment the inference host, and apply least-privilege access.

License and commercial self-hosting checklist

Family or example What is established What you must verify before deployment
gpt-oss Reported as Apache 2.0; 131,072-token context reported for the 2025 release Exact release card, notices, model-specific restrictions, and redistribution obligations
Llama 4 Open-weight availability with additional license conditions Commercial rights, attribution, acceptable-use terms, and obligations triggered by scale or distribution
Gemma 3 Open-weight availability with additional license conditions Gemma license and use policies for the exact checkpoint and product
Mistral releases Terms vary by release License attached to the selected model; do not generalize from another Mistral checkpoint
Qwen and DeepSeek releases Multiple checkpoints and sizes are available Exact model-card license, commercial permission, attribution, and redistribution terms

Keep a written approval record for commercial use. “The weights are downloadable” is not a sufficient legal conclusion. If you redistribute weights, adapters, or a product that incorporates outputs, preserve required notices and review any downstream obligations.

Troubleshooting common local failures

The model will not load

  • Confirm that the quantized file matches the runtime and architecture.
  • Lower context length and batch size; the KV cache can consume the remaining memory.
  • Close other GPU applications and check whether the runtime is spilling to system RAM.
  • If the checkpoint still exceeds your budget, move to a smaller model rather than forcing unstable offload.

Responses are too slow

  • Measure prompt-processing speed separately from generation speed.
  • Reduce unnecessary context and disable concurrency during interactive use.
  • Check whether part of the model is running on a slower device.
  • Compare a smaller or more aggressively quantized checkpoint on the same task.

Code quality dropped after quantization

  • Re-run the same tests with a higher-precision quantization.
  • Use shorter, more targeted context and supply explicit acceptance tests.
  • Compare a different family at the same memory budget; architecture can matter as much as parameter count.

Private data appears in logs

  • Inspect the client, runtime, reverse proxy, crash reporter, and backup configuration.
  • Disable or minimize request logging and restrict log retention.
  • Rotate credentials and assume exposure if a host or extension was compromised.

Decision guide

  • One 24–32GB GPU and coding first: start with Devstral Small 2 or Qwen3.8-27B, then test repository tasks with your preferred quantization.
  • Writing plus coding on modest hardware: compare smaller Gemma, Qwen, Llama, or Mistral releases for tone, language coverage, and tool support.
  • About 128GB available: evaluate Qwen3-Coder-Next and gpt-oss-120b, while budgeting for server-class power, cooling, and runtime complexity.
  • Maximum reasoning or long context: consider larger DeepSeek, Qwen, Llama, Mistral, or mixture-of-experts deployments on multiple GPUs or private GPU cloud.
  • Commercial product: reject any checkpoint whose exact license has not been reviewed, regardless of benchmark quality.
  • Strict privacy requirement: run inference on controlled infrastructure, but audit telemetry, logs, backups, extensions, and model provenance as carefully as the network boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a large model entirely on a desktop GPU?

Only when the quantized weights, runtime overhead, KV cache, and your intended context fit the card. A 24GB RTX 4090 is a practical single-GPU reference point for some 4-bit models, not for every large checkpoint.

Does a 131,072-token context window mean I can paste that much text locally?

No. It is an advertised model capability. Usable context is limited by your runtime, available memory, KV-cache growth, latency target, and whether other sessions are running.

Which license is safest for commercial self-hosting?

Start with a release that explicitly grants the permissions you need, such as the reported Apache 2.0 terms for gpt-oss, then verify the exact model card and preserve required notices. Downloadable weights alone do not establish commercial rights.
