Semgrep CE is the quickest broad-language pattern scanner, CodeQL provides deeper database-backed queries when your language and build are supported, Bandit is a focused Python analyzer, and gosec targets Go. The right choice depends on your repository’s languages, frameworks, build process, analysis depth, rule coverage, and the time your team can spend reviewing findings—not on a universal ranking.
What static application security testing does
Static Application Security Testing (SAST) examines source code, bytecode, or binaries without executing the application. OWASP describes it as a white-box technique: the analyzer inspects the code from the inside. You can run a scan in an IDE, locally before a commit, in a pre-commit hook, or in continuous integration (CI).

A SAST result is a potential vulnerability identified by a rule, pattern, query, or analysis model. It is not proof that an exploit exists. A developer must check the finding against the surrounding code, data flow, configuration, and intended behavior. Conversely, a clean report does not prove that the application is secure: unsupported languages, unrecognized frameworks, missing rules, unbuilt code, and paths outside the analyzer’s model can all hide defects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- SAST is useful for catching issues early, when a developer can still change the affected code cheaply.
- It does not replace dependency vulnerability checks, secret scanning, dynamic testing, threat modeling, or human security review.
- Every team needs an ownership and triage process; an unreviewed alert queue eventually becomes ignored noise.
Shortlist at a glance
| Tool | Best fit | Analysis model | Setup and workflow | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semgrep Community Edition | Fast, customizable checks across many languages | Syntax-aware patterns and configurable rules | Low-friction local or CI scans; terminal, SARIF, and JSON output | Community Edition can miss many true positives when analysis is limited to one function or file; do not assume language count means deep cross-file analysis |
| CodeQL | Supported repositories needing semantic, data-flow, or control-flow queries | Extracts the codebase into a queryable database and runs QL queries | Requires language- and build-specific extraction; findings can be displayed in code-scanning systems | Support and language-version details change; compiled projects may require a successful build extraction |
| Bandit | Python projects looking for common Python security problems | Builds an abstract syntax tree (AST) for each file and runs security plugins on AST nodes | Focused language-specific scan that is straightforward to add to Python workflows | Python-only scope; it cannot cover risks in other languages or provide repository-wide coverage by itself |
| gosec | Go projects needing a language-specific security layer | Go-source security analysis | Add it alongside other checks in a Go build and CI process | Go-focused rather than a complete cross-language solution |
These tools are complementary approaches, not interchangeable scores on a verified benchmark. The available evidence does not establish a controlled, directly comparable precision or recall winner.

Semgrep Community Edition: the practical broad-language choice
How it works
Semgrep CE matches syntax-aware patterns against source code rather than relying only on text search. Rules can be configured and customized, which lets a team encode project-specific insecure patterns, framework conventions, or migration checks. The project’s current repository documentation says Semgrep supports more than 30 languages and lists more than 2,000 community-driven rules. Those are scope and registry-size claims, not guarantees that a relevant rule exists or that a rule will detect every real vulnerability.
Results can be emitted to the terminal or in SARIF and JSON formats. SARIF is useful when a CI or code-scanning system needs to ingest third-party findings; JSON is convenient for automation and internal reporting.
Where it fits best
- A polyglot repository that needs one approachable scanner.
- Teams that want to write or tune rules without building a full semantic analysis pipeline.
- Developers who need fast local feedback before opening a pull request.
- CI jobs that must produce machine-readable output for later triage.
The depth caveat
Semgrep’s maintainers warn that Community Edition can miss many true positives for security use when analysis is limited to a single function or file. A pattern that catches a dangerous call is not the same as proving that attacker-controlled data reaches that call through several files. OWASP notes that cross-file data-flow analysis for Semgrep requires the commercial platform. Treat CE as a valuable pattern and local-context layer, and verify that the specific rule and edition cover the analysis depth your threat model needs.
Licensing precision
The Semgrep CE engine is identified as LGPL 2.1. Its community rule registry is described as being under the Semgrep Rules License rather than an OSI-approved license. Check the current terms for both the engine and the rules before redistributing them or embedding them in a product; “open source” does not automatically mean that every associated rule or service uses the same license.
CodeQL: deeper queries when the repository is supported
How it works
CodeQL extracts a repository into a database that represents program structure and relationships. QL queries then search that database. This model can express semantic relationships and interpreted data-flow or control-flow paths that are difficult to capture with a simple pattern. Teams can use existing query packs and develop custom queries for organization-specific sinks, sources, sanitizers, and framework behavior.

What you must verify before adoption
- List every production language, generated language, and relevant version in the repository.
- Check the current CodeQL supported-language matrix for those languages and versions.
- Determine whether the project needs a build. For compiled languages, extraction commonly depends on the build being configured and reproducible.
- Confirm that the repository’s dependency, monorepo, and generated-code layout can be represented by the chosen extraction setup.
- Pilot the database creation and query run on a representative branch before making it a required CI gate.
Language and build support are not static facts. The support matrix changes and can include version caveats, so a tool that fits one repository may not fit another using a different compiler or framework version.
Where findings appear
GitHub code scanning can display CodeQL findings and third-party results supplied in SARIF. Private-repository code scanning requires a GitHub Code Security license according to current GitHub documentation. Distinguish the open-source CodeQL toolchain and query packs from the terms governing a hosted scanning service and private-repository use.
When CodeQL is the better investment
Choose it when the repository is in a supported language, the team can maintain the extraction and build steps, and the security question depends on relationships across functions or files. If the build is fragile or the language is outside the support matrix, the setup cost can outweigh the benefit; use a supported pattern scanner or language-specific analyzer while you address that gap.
Bandit: focused security checks for Python
Analysis model
Bandit builds an abstract syntax tree for each Python file and runs security plugins against AST nodes. This lets it recognize Python constructs and flag classes of insecure usage more reliably than a plain text search for a function name.
Best use
- Python services, scripts, libraries, and command-line tools.
- Repositories that want a small, understandable security check alongside tests and linting.
- Teams that need Python-specific findings without adopting a full multi-language platform.
Bandit is intentionally narrow. If the same repository contains JavaScript, Go, infrastructure code, or native extensions, add analyzers appropriate to those components. A clean Bandit result says little about vulnerabilities in code it does not parse.

How to interpret a finding
Inspect the flagged AST construct and its context. Confirm whether input is actually attacker-controlled, whether validation occurs earlier, and whether the reported API is used in a safe mode. If the code is intentionally safe, document the reason and use the project’s supported suppression mechanism narrowly; do not blanket-suppress an entire directory merely to make CI green.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →gosec: a Go-specific layer
OWASP identifies gosec as a Go-source security analyzer. It is a sensible component of a Go pipeline, especially when the repository’s risk is concentrated in Go code and the team wants checks tailored to that language. It should be treated as one layer rather than a cross-language SAST replacement. Use another analyzer for web templates, JavaScript front ends, Python tooling, infrastructure definitions, or other languages in the same repository.
As with every language-specific scanner, confirm current rule coverage and supported Go versions in the project documentation before turning a particular rule into a blocking policy. The useful question is not whether a tool has a long rule list, but whether its rules address the APIs and frameworks your code actually uses.
How to choose the right tool for your codebase
1. Inventory the repository
- Record production and test languages, framework versions, generated code, templates, and scripts.
- Document the compiler, package manager, build command, and monorepo boundaries.
- Mark security-sensitive flows such as HTTP input, deserialization, database queries, shell execution, file access, authentication, and authorization.
Match that inventory against each tool’s current support matrix. A nominally supported language may still be a poor fit if the framework, version, generated code, or build mode is not handled well.
2. Decide how much context the analysis needs
| Security question | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Does this code construct a known-dangerous API call? | Semgrep CE or a language-specific analyzer | Syntax and AST rules can provide fast local feedback |
| Can untrusted data travel through several functions or files to a sensitive sink? | CodeQL when the language and build are supported | Database-backed queries can model relationships and paths |
| Are the main risks in Python AST constructs? | Bandit, optionally combined with another scanner | Its plugins are designed for Python syntax |
| Are the main risks in Go source? | gosec, optionally combined with a broader scanner | It adds Go-focused coverage without pretending to cover every language |
3. Check edition and rule coverage
Do not infer analysis depth from a language count or registry size. Confirm whether the open-source edition includes the rules, query packs, cross-file behavior, framework modeling, and output formats you require. Semgrep’s Community Edition and commercial platform do not provide identical security-analysis scope; evaluate the edition you will actually deploy.

4. Match output to review workflow
Choose a tool whose findings can reach the people who fix code. Terminal output is useful during development; SARIF supports ingestion by compatible code-scanning systems; JSON supports custom automation. Decide where a finding is assigned, how severity is assessed, how false positives are documented, and what evidence is required before suppressing it.
5. Pilot on representative code
Run the candidate on old and new code, security-critical paths, generated files, tests, and at least one service with real framework usage. Have developers validate a sample of alerts against source context. Record setup time, scan duration, actionable findings, false positives, missed cases discovered manually, and the effort needed to keep the job working. This is an internal pilot, not a substitute for a controlled benchmark; no universal precision or recall figure is established for this shortlist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A rollout workflow that developers will use
Local and IDE feedback
Start with a fast scan that a developer can run before committing. Keep the initial rule set focused on high-confidence, high-impact problems so the feedback is understandable. Provide a short explanation of each rule, a safe remediation pattern, and an owner for questions.
Pre-commit checks
Use pre-commit scanning for checks that finish quickly and produce few false positives. Do not make a slow database build or a noisy experimental rule a mandatory local gate; developers will bypass a check that prevents ordinary work without clear value.
CI and pull requests
- Run the scanner on every pull request, including changed files and any required project context.
- Run a broader scheduled scan so findings outside the diff are not forgotten.
- Publish SARIF or another supported machine-readable format when your code-hosting system can display annotations.
- Fail the check only for a defined policy, such as a new high-confidence issue, rather than for every historical alert.
- Assign findings to the team that owns the affected code and record exceptions with an expiration or review date.
GitHub code scanning accepts SARIF from third-party tools, which allows a team to keep its preferred analyzer while centralizing review. Private repositories need the applicable Code Security license for code scanning.
Best Value
Baseline and debt management
If an existing repository produces hundreds of alerts, establish a reviewed baseline instead of blocking all development immediately. Fix high-impact items first, prevent new instances, and schedule the baseline for retirement. A suppression should explain why the alert is not applicable, not merely that it is inconvenient.
Triaging and fixing findings
Validate the source and sink
Read the exact code region, then trace the value from its source to the reported sink as far as the tool allows. Ask whether input is attacker-controlled, whether canonicalization or validation occurs, and whether a safer API or parameterized operation is used.
Classify the result
- Confirmed vulnerability: create a remediation issue with impact, affected versions, and a test that proves the fix.
- Intentional and safe: document the invariant or control that makes the pattern safe, then suppress narrowly.
- Tool limitation or wrong context: report the rule problem, improve the rule if possible, and avoid hiding unrelated matches.
- Unclear: escalate to a security reviewer rather than silently closing it.
Verify the fix
Re-run the analyzer, add or update a regression test, and inspect neighboring code for the same pattern. A rule finding can disappear because code moved or a file was excluded, so confirm that the intended security property—not merely the alert—was addressed.

What SAST cannot establish
- It cannot prove that an application has no vulnerabilities.
- It cannot fully assess runtime configuration, deployed infrastructure, authentication policy, business-logic abuse, or production-only behavior.
- It does not automatically discover vulnerable third-party dependencies; use dependency analysis for that risk.
- It does not replace secret scanning, dynamic application testing, threat modeling, penetration testing, or security review.
- It may not analyze generated, vendored, dynamically constructed, or unsupported code correctly.
Use SAST as one control in a layered program. The strongest workflow combines early code feedback with dependency review, secret detection, runtime testing, and human analysis of high-risk changes.
Open-source and service terms to check
“Open source” can refer to the scanner engine, its rule or query packs, and the service that stores and displays results; those components may have different terms. Semgrep CE’s engine and community rules use separately described licenses. CodeQL’s open-source toolchain and query packs are distinct from hosted code-scanning terms, including the license requirement for private repositories. Review current license text, redistribution rights, telemetry behavior, and whether a cloud service is optional before standardizing on a tool.
Practical recommendation
For a mixed-language team that wants quick adoption, start with Semgrep CE and add language-specific checks where they improve coverage. For a supported repository that can maintain the extraction and build process and needs deeper data-flow reasoning, evaluate CodeQL. Use Bandit for Python-specific coverage and gosec for Go-specific coverage. In every case, pilot on representative code, measure the findings your developers can actually fix, and keep the analysis scope and limitations visible to reviewers.
