For most teams, Stride is the closest complete open-source replacement for BRUTAL: it keeps you in C#, adds an editor and production-ready 2D/3D workflows, and documents MIT licensing. Choose MonoGame if you want a code-first C# framework and are willing to build your own engine conventions. Choose Godot for the broadest integrated open-source workflow and export coverage, or Bevy if Rust and data-oriented ECS-style development matter more than C# compatibility. Stay with BRUTAL when direct native/Vulkan control and owning your entire stack are the actual goals.
What BRUTAL is—and why that changes the comparison
BRUTAL is an open-source C# framework for making a game or building a separate game engine. It is deliberately a foundation rather than a finished, general-purpose editor engine. The maintainers describe it as a way to write a game directly or use the framework underneath an engine you design yourself.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters because an alternative can be “better” in one direction while being a worse fit in another. A visual engine such as Stride or Godot removes many implementation decisions. A framework such as MonoGame preserves more of the code-first approach. Bevy changes both the language and the programming model. None is a one-for-one replacement for every BRUTAL use case.

- A custom C# interop layer for native APIs and libraries.
- Mathematics, memory-management helpers, strings, collections, job scheduling, logging and localization.
- Bindings for Vulkan, GLFW, Dear ImGui, FMOD, RakNet, Jolt and Box2D.
- Freedom to add other NuGet packages and make the architectural decisions yourself.
What BRUTAL intentionally does not supply
- A visual editor.
- A scene graph.
- A renderer.
- A prescribed project architecture or asset workflow.
The project says it is not trying to become a general-purpose engine and does not plan to add those missing layers. That makes BRUTAL attractive for engine programmers, but it also means that teams must design their own rendering, scene or entity model, tools, import pipeline, debugging conventions and production workflow.

Stride: the closest complete C# replacement
Stride describes itself as a free, open-source, cross-platform C# engine for 2D and 3D games and other interactive content on desktop and VR. Its runtime and editor are open source, and the project identifies MIT licensing. The editor is called Game Studio.
Why Stride fits a BRUTAL user
Stride preserves C# while filling the largest gaps BRUTAL intentionally leaves to you: an editor, asset workflow, scene-oriented authoring and engine-level rendering and game features. A team that wants to ship a conventional 2D or 3D game without first writing an internal engine can move directly into project setup, content import, scene construction and gameplay code.
The transition is therefore less about learning a new language and more about accepting an engine’s conventions. Instead of choosing every subsystem, you work inside Stride’s project, scene, asset and runtime model. That reduces the amount of infrastructure your team must own, but it also gives you less reason to replace each subsystem with a custom implementation.
When to choose Stride
- Your team wants to remain in C#.
- You need a visual editor rather than a collection of libraries.
- Your project is a conventional 2D or 3D game or interactive desktop/VR application.
- You value an MIT-licensed open-source runtime and editor.
Stride trade-offs and checks
Stride is more opinionated and substantially more complete than BRUTAL. That is its advantage for production, but it is also a change in ownership: the engine defines more of the workflow, and your team spends less time designing foundational systems. Before committing, verify the current release’s supported operating systems, graphics back ends, VR path and compatibility with your required .NET toolchain. Open-source status and a permissive license do not guarantee that every platform or device combination is equally mature.

MonoGame: the code-first C# framework option
The official MonoGame repository describes it as an open-source, cross-platform .NET framework for creating games. It lists C# support for desktop PCs, consoles and mobile devices.
Why MonoGame is conceptually close to BRUTAL
MonoGame gives you a programming framework rather than an editor-first engine architecture. You can define your own scene representation, entity model, resource lifetime rules, tools and build process. That makes it a natural fit for developers who like BRUTAL’s control but want a more established C# game framework and a broad platform story.
This flexibility is also the main cost. MonoGame does not turn a blank project into a complete editor-driven production pipeline. Your team still has to decide how scenes are serialized, how assets are imported and cooked, how content is validated, how gameplay systems communicate and how designers iterate. You can build those systems incrementally, but they remain your responsibility.
When to choose MonoGame
- You want C# and .NET without adopting a full general-purpose engine.
- Your team already has an internal architecture or is comfortable creating one.
- You need a framework that identifies desktop, console and mobile support as core targets.
- You prefer code and custom tooling over a prescribed editor workflow.
MonoGame checks before migration
List every platform you intend to ship on and confirm the current MonoGame path for each one. Then map your content requirements: sprites and 2D data are a different tooling problem from imported 3D meshes, animation, shaders and level editing. MonoGame can be the right foundation, but “cross-platform” does not mean that one project configuration, input layer or content pipeline will require no platform-specific work.
Godot: the broadest integrated open-source workflow
Godot’s documentation describes a free, open-source, community-driven engine for 2D and 3D projects. Its documented one-click export targets include Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, the web and consoles.

Why Godot is a strong default for many teams
Godot offers the integrated workflow that BRUTAL explicitly does not: an editor, project conventions, scene and node authoring, asset handling and a complete runtime environment. If your priority is to begin building game content rather than designing an engine, Godot reduces the amount of infrastructure work before the first playable build.
Its breadth is especially useful when a project may span desktop, mobile, web and console deployments. The export list is a planning advantage, not a promise that every target has identical requirements. Check the current Godot version, export templates, console access conditions and the rendering features your game depends on before setting a production schedule.
What changes when you leave BRUTAL for Godot
You move from a low-level C# foundation to a higher-level engine with its own editor and project model. You will make fewer decisions about memory, rendering and engine composition, while gaining faster iteration for scenes, assets and gameplay. Existing BRUTAL code cannot be assumed to transfer directly: bindings, job systems, rendering code and custom data structures need to be replaced or wrapped around Godot’s APIs.
Choose Godot when
- You want the most complete editor-led workflow among these options.
- Broad 2D/3D export coverage is more important than preserving C# architecture.
- Your team prefers a community-driven engine with established project conventions.
- You do not want to build a scene editor, renderer and asset pipeline in-house.
Bevy: Rust and data-oriented engine design
Bevy is an open-source game engine written in Rust. Its introduction presents it as a simple, data-driven engine, and the project emphasizes community learning resources and examples. Bevy is still in development; the project says releases arrive approximately every three months and may include breaking API changes.
Why Bevy is a meaningful BRUTAL alternative
Bevy appeals to developers who want a code-centric engine and a data-oriented architecture, but it is not a C# migration target. The language, package ecosystem, build tooling and debugging habits all change. In return, Rust’s ownership model and Bevy’s data-driven design can be compelling for teams that want explicit control over system boundaries and data access.

Managing Bevy’s change rate
Pin the Bevy version used by your project instead of tracking an unconstrained dependency. Keep engine upgrades separate from gameplay changes, read the migration guidance for each release, and reserve engineering time for API changes. A rapidly evolving engine can be productive for experimentation, but a long-lived commercial project needs a deliberate upgrade policy and a tested rollback point.
Choose Bevy when
- Rust is an intentional team choice, not an incidental experiment.
- Data-oriented systems and code-driven iteration are central to the project.
- You can absorb API churn and maintain your own compatibility layer where useful.
- You value an open-source engine that remains open to architectural experimentation.
When staying with BRUTAL is the right decision
Replacing BRUTAL is not automatically an improvement. Keep it when the missing layers are deliberate requirements rather than problems. Direct Vulkan and native-library access, a custom interop layer, and the freedom to choose or replace every subsystem can be more valuable than editor convenience.
BRUTAL is a good fit for an engine-building team
BRUTAL makes sense when your team has the time and expertise to own rendering, scene or entity architecture, tooling, asset processing, diagnostics and platform integration. It can also suit a specialized game whose architecture does not resemble a conventional editor-driven engine and would be constrained by one.
BRUTAL’s license obligations
BRUTAL uses an MIT-based license with attribution requirements. The project specifies credit, displaying its logo before gameplay and including a NOTICE file, subject to stated waivers and commercial-license arrangements. Read the current license and notices before release; permissive licensing still has obligations, and those obligations are part of your shipping checklist.

Best Value
A practical selection process
- Write down the non-negotiables. Record language, shipping platforms, 2D or 3D scope, VR requirements, renderer constraints, licensing needs and whether a visual editor is mandatory.
- Classify your desired abstraction level. If you want to design engine architecture, compare BRUTAL with MonoGame. If you want to produce game content immediately, start with Stride or Godot. If Rust and data-oriented design are requirements, evaluate Bevy.
- Inventory the systems you would otherwise build. Count editor tools, scene serialization, asset import, rendering, physics integration, profiling, localization, input and deployment automation. The longer this list, the stronger the case for a complete engine.
- Prototype the riskiest target. Build a small vertical slice using your actual input devices, graphics features, content formats and intended export target. A desktop prototype cannot prove that a mobile, web, VR or console path will meet your needs.
- Test the licensing workflow. Keep the license text, attribution, logo and NOTICE requirements in the repository and release checklist. Confirm that third-party packages used by your chosen engine do not add obligations your project cannot meet.
- Set a version policy. Pin engine and package versions, record the compiler/runtime requirements, and define who approves upgrades. This is particularly important for Bevy’s approximately quarterly releases and possible breaking changes.
- Estimate ownership, not just onboarding. A framework may be quick to start but expensive to maintain if your team must build an editor and content pipeline. An integrated engine may be slower to customize but cheaper to operate over multiple years.
Migration guidance from BRUTAL
Moving to Stride
Separate game rules from BRUTAL-specific bindings first. Identify rendering calls, window/input code, physics adapters, asset loading and job scheduling. Rebuild those boundaries around Stride’s project and runtime model, then migrate one playable scene and one content type before moving the whole game. Keep the original BRUTAL implementation available until the new build reproduces input, save/load and performance-critical behavior.
Moving to MonoGame
Preserve your gameplay architecture where it is useful, but replace BRUTAL’s platform and graphics bindings with MonoGame’s abstractions. Decide early whether you will retain a custom scene system, adopt an existing content convention or write an editor. Document resource lifetime and threading rules; a framework gives you freedom, but undocumented conventions become migration debt.
Moving to Godot
Treat the move as an engine-architecture port rather than a library swap. Map BRUTAL systems to Godot scenes, nodes, resources, scripts and project settings. Port a representative level, animation and save path first. Avoid translating every low-level abstraction mechanically; use Godot’s native workflow where it solves the same problem, and isolate custom code where it does not.

Moving to Bevy
Plan a language and model migration. Convert C# data structures and update loops into Rust components and systems incrementally, keeping interfaces small enough to test. Pin the Bevy release, record migration notes and avoid upgrading during a feature sprint. A thin compatibility layer around game data can make later engine changes less disruptive.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing only language names. C# compatibility does not make Stride, MonoGame and BRUTAL equivalent. Their editor, renderer and ownership boundaries differ substantially.
- Assuming an export list is a shipping guarantee. Verify the current toolchain, templates, device support and platform-specific requirements for the exact release you plan to use.
- Underestimating tools. A renderer is only one part of a production engine. Scene editing, asset validation, debugging, profiling and repeatable builds often consume more time than the first prototype.
- Ignoring API churn. Bevy’s stated approximately three-month release cadence and possible breaking changes require version pinning and upgrade budgets.
- Treating open source as identical licensing. BRUTAL’s MIT-based terms include attribution requirements, while Stride documents MIT licensing. Review each project’s current license and notices rather than assuming all obligations match.
- Porting abstractions instead of outcomes. Recreate the game behavior and production workflow you need; do not preserve a low-level subsystem merely because it existed in BRUTAL.
Bottom line
Choose Stride for the closest full C# engine experience. Choose MonoGame when you want to keep the framework mindset and build the architecture yourself. Choose Godot when editor productivity and broad integrated export coverage outweigh language and low-level control. Choose Bevy when Rust and data-oriented design are strategic priorities and your team can manage a changing API. Choose BRUTAL itself when the point is to own the engine stack, work close to native/Vulkan APIs and accept responsibility for the layers a general-purpose engine would normally provide.
