The right choice depends on whether you need an editor extension, a terminal agent, local or on-premises operation, strict approval before changes, or the freedom to connect your own model. Four projects cover those priorities well: Continue for combined IDE and terminal use, Cline for approval-driven agent workflows, Aider for terminal-first Git work, and Tabby for self-hosted infrastructure.
Official project documentation does not provide a directly comparable benchmark across these tools. Model quality, repository size, hardware, context-window limits and workflow design can change the outcome substantially. Treat the comparison below as a deployment and workflow guide, then run a trial against representative repositories before standardizing on one.

What an open-source coding assistant changes on Linux
A proprietary assistant normally combines a client, a hosted service and a model selected by the vendor. An open-source alternative may expose some or all of those layers: an editor extension, a terminal client, an agent that can modify files and execute commands, a server you run yourself, or an interface for connecting a model you already operate. “Open source” therefore describes the project code, not necessarily every model or service used with it.
For Linux developers, the practical differences are control and integration. You can place the client in a VS Code or JetBrains workflow, keep it in a shell beside Git, run an interactive session while investigating a bug, or automate a headless task in CI. Self-hosting can keep source code inside your network, but it also makes you responsible for model serving, updates, credentials, hardware and monitoring.

How to choose among the four
Choose Continue for one workflow across editor and terminal
Continue is the most natural fit when developers move between an IDE and a shell and do not want two unrelated assistants. Its VS Code and JetBrains extensions provide agent, chat, edit and autocomplete modes. The Continue CLI, invoked as cn, runs in a Linux terminal and supports both interactive and headless operation. The CLI can edit files and run commands, so it can participate in a shell-centered workflow as well as an editor session.
This combination is useful for a repository where you begin with inline completion, switch to a multi-file change in the editor, and then run a repeatable headless task from a script. Keep the approval and execution settings conservative when first enabling terminal actions. The supplied documentation does not define one universal safety policy for every mode, so inspect the current configuration and test it in a disposable branch.
Choose Cline when approval gates are non-negotiable
Cline describes itself as an open-source coding agent in the IDE, terminal and desktop. Its documented workflow asks you to approve file edits and terminal commands. That explicit checkpoint is valuable for teams that want agentic, multi-step behavior without allowing an assistant to silently rewrite a repository or execute an unreviewed command.
The Cline CLI publishes Linux binaries for both arm64 and x64, which covers common cloud instances, developer workstations and many ARM systems. The repository identifies an Apache 2.0 license. Before distributing a pinned binary internally, confirm the release’s architecture and integrity instructions in the project repository, then test approval prompts with the shell commands your team considers sensitive.
Choose Aider for terminal-first and Git-oriented work
Aider is presented by its project as AI pair programming in the terminal. If your normal loop is shell, editor, Git diff and test runner, a terminal-first client avoids adding another graphical surface. The official installation page provides curl and wget installers for Mac and Linux, with alternatives using uv or pipx.
Aider is a strong candidate for scripted maintenance, repository-wide refactors performed from a controlled branch, and developers who prefer to review changes through Git rather than an IDE panel. The supplied material does not establish a specific approval model, local-model list or provider matrix. Check those details for the release and backend you intend to use, especially if your policy requires every command or edit to be confirmed.

Choose Tabby for self-hosted or on-premises control
Tabby is positioned as a self-hosted coding assistant and an on-premises alternative to a hosted assistant. Its project description says it is self-contained, does not require a DBMS or cloud service, exposes an OpenAPI interface and supports consumer-grade GPUs. Docker deployment is documented, and the repository lists Ubuntu/Debian dependencies for building on Linux.
This architecture suits an organization that wants model-serving and source-code traffic inside its own network, or that needs an API endpoint shared by several development environments. It also shifts operational work to you: select and serve a model, size the machine, secure the endpoint, monitor resource use and apply updates. “Self-hosted” does not mean zero infrastructure.
Interface and workflow differences
IDE extensions
Continue and Cline both cover editor-based work, although their interaction models differ. Continue offers separate agent, chat, edit and autocomplete modes across VS Code and JetBrains. Cline emphasizes an agent that proposes edits and commands for approval. Use an IDE extension when symbol navigation, inline diffs and quick access to the current file are central to the task.
An editor integration can also hide context decisions. Before trusting a large change, check which files are included, how ignored files are treated and whether the assistant sees generated artifacts, secrets or build output. The four project descriptions do not provide one common context algorithm, so inspect each client’s current documentation and settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTerminal and headless operation
Continue’s cn CLI supports interactive and headless Linux use. A headless mode is useful for a repeatable operation in a script, but scripts need explicit boundaries: fixed working directories, a clean Git branch, timeouts, captured logs and a test command that fails the job when the result is invalid.
Aider is expressly terminal-first, making it the simplest conceptual match for shell and Git habits. Cline also spans the terminal, with approvals as a central safety control. Tabby’s supplied description focuses on its self-hosted service and OpenAPI interface rather than a documented autonomous shell agent; treat it as an endpoint that other clients can consume unless the current release documents a different workflow.
Autonomy, approvals and operational safety
Use a graduated permission policy
- Start read-only. Point the assistant at a disposable clone or a branch with no uncommitted work. Ask for an explanation of the repository structure and a proposed plan without allowing edits.
- Allow edits in a branch. Review the diff after each logical task. Keep generated files and dependency directories out of the context when they are not needed.
- Allow commands selectively. Permit deterministic checks such as the project’s formatter, unit tests or static analysis. Require confirmation for package installation, network access, database changes, destructive file operations and deployment commands.
- Automate only after observation. A headless Continue task or a scripted Aider workflow should run with a clean checkout, bounded inputs, a timeout and an automated verification step.
Cline’s explicit approval requests map directly to this graduated policy. Continue can edit files and run commands through its CLI, so apply equivalent restrictions through its configuration and shell environment. For Aider, verify the current confirmation settings before allowing unattended operation. Tabby’s self-hosted service should be protected with network and API controls appropriate to your environment.

Protect secrets and source code
- Use a dedicated API key or service identity with the minimum scope needed. Never place a long-lived credential in a repository, shell history committed to a dotfiles project or an issue prompt.
- Exclude environment files, private keys, production configuration, customer data and generated credentials from assistant context.
- Run agents as an unprivileged Linux user in a container or restricted account when they can execute commands.
- Log prompts, tool calls and resulting diffs where policy permits, but redact tokens and personal data before retaining logs.
- For self-hosted Tabby, restrict the OpenAPI endpoint to trusted networks, authenticate callers and apply TLS where traffic leaves the local host.
Model and provider flexibility
“Open-source assistant” and “open model” are separate decisions. The client may be open source while the model is accessed through a hosted API. Conversely, a self-hosted client can serve a model locally. Your choice affects latency, privacy, context capacity, hardware cost and maintenance.
Tabby’s project material explicitly documents an OpenAPI interface, no required cloud service and support for consumer-grade GPUs. That makes it the clearest candidate here for an organization planning an internal endpoint or local infrastructure. Continue, Cline and Aider may support additional providers or local backends in current releases, but the supplied project notes do not establish a complete, stable list. Verify endpoint formats, authentication, model names, context limits and tool-calling support before committing to a provider.
Do not compare assistants using only the model name. A model with a larger context window may still perform poorly if the client selects irrelevant files; a smaller local model may be preferable for private code or low-latency completion. Record the exact client version, model identifier, context settings and repository revision in any internal evaluation.
Linux installation and deployment planning
Continue
Install the VS Code or JetBrains extension from the project’s current instructions, then install the Linux-capable Continue CLI and verify that cn is on your PATH. Test an interactive session in a sample repository before enabling headless jobs. Because the supplied material does not include a fixed command or version, use the project’s release-specific instructions rather than copying an outdated shell snippet.
Cline
Select the Linux arm64 or x64 CLI binary that matches the machine architecture, or use the documented IDE or desktop distribution. Confirm that the binary starts, configure the model endpoint and perform a task that requires both a proposed edit and a harmless command. You should see approval requests before each action described by the project workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Aider
Use the official curl or wget installer for Linux, or install through uv or pipx if your team manages Python applications that way. Keep the installation isolated from the system Python where possible, pin a version for reproducible automation and run the client from a Git branch with a clean status.
Tabby
For a quick Linux deployment, follow the project’s Docker launch procedure. For a source build, use the Ubuntu/Debian dependencies documented by the repository. Allocate GPU or CPU resources deliberately, place persistent model and configuration data on managed storage, and expose the OpenAPI service only to the clients that need it. The project states that a DBMS and cloud service are not required, but you still need operational controls for updates, backups, access and monitoring.

Repository context and large-codebase behavior
Context handling is often more important than the assistant’s name. Begin with a small, well-defined task and observe which files the client reads. Ask for a plan that names files and symbols, then check that plan against the repository before permitting edits. For a large monorepo, divide work by package or service and provide build and test commands for that scope.
Keep the working tree clean enough that a generated diff is attributable to one task. Commit or stash unrelated changes, avoid mixing formatting-only rewrites with logic changes, and have the assistant update tests in the same task when behavior changes. When the model loses track of earlier decisions, start a new focused session with a concise specification rather than repeatedly adding unrelated chat history.

How to run a fair evaluation
Because no authoritative benchmark covers all four projects, evaluate them on your own representative work. Use at least three repositories or components: one small service, one medium codebase with tests and one module that crosses package boundaries. Keep the task descriptions, model, hardware and network conditions constant.
- Define tasks. Include a bug fix with a failing test, a refactor that touches several files, documentation generated from existing code and a test-writing task. Avoid tasks whose solutions are already in the prompt.
- Measure completion quality. Record whether the change builds, passes tests, meets the specification and avoids unrelated edits. Count manual corrections rather than relying on a subjective impression.
- Measure control. Note whether you can inspect proposed diffs, approve commands, stop a run and recover cleanly from a mistaken edit.
- Measure operations. Record installation time, cold-start time, latency, memory and GPU use, failure recovery and the effort required to update the client or model.
- Measure privacy fit. Verify where prompts and source code travel, what logs are retained and whether the deployment meets your organization’s policy.
- Repeat. Run each task more than once if practical. A single successful conversation is not a productivity benchmark.
Publish or document the result with the client release, model version, repository revision and hardware. Without those qualifiers, a claim that one assistant is “best” is not reproducible.
Common failure modes and fixes
The assistant edits the wrong files
Reduce the task scope, identify the allowed directories in the prompt, and ask for a file-by-file plan before enabling edits. Remove generated output and unrelated packages from the working context. Review the diff immediately; do not ask the assistant to continue on top of a confused change set.
Commands fail because the environment is incomplete
Run the project’s setup and test commands yourself first. Tell the assistant the exact Linux distribution, runtime version and package-manager command that succeeded. If network access is restricted, provide cached dependencies or run the command in the same container used by CI.

Best Value
Local deployment is too slow or unstable
Check model size, quantization, context length, concurrent requests and available CPU or GPU memory. Reduce concurrency and context for interactive completion, or move batch tasks to a machine with more capacity. Tabby’s consumer-GPU support lowers the entry barrier but does not guarantee a particular model’s latency.
An agent performs an unsafe action
Revoke affected credentials, inspect the complete command and file diff, restore from the clean branch or backup, and tighten permissions before retrying. Keep destructive commands behind approval and run development agents without elevated privileges.
Decision guide
- You need VS Code or JetBrains plus a Linux terminal: start with Continue.
- You want an agent that asks before every documented edit or command: evaluate Cline first.
- You live in the shell and review work through Git: evaluate Aider.
- You need an internal service, an OpenAPI endpoint or no required cloud dependency: evaluate Tabby.
- You need a specific local model or API provider: verify current provider documentation for the shortlisted project; the supplied project descriptions do not establish a universal compatibility list.
- You need a defensible productivity claim: run the controlled evaluation above instead of relying on a generic ranking.
Licensing and governance checks
Cline’s repository identifies the Apache 2.0 license. The supplied material does not state licenses for Continue, Aider or Tabby, so read each repository’s current license and any bundled-model terms before redistribution. Also review dependency licenses, telemetry settings, model terms, data-retention policies and the rules governing generated code in your organization.
For teams, write a short operating policy: approved projects and model endpoints, prohibited data, required branch and review practices, command-approval rules, logging and retention, incident response, and who owns upgrades. This policy matters as much as the client selection when an assistant can read proprietary source or execute shell commands.
Bottom line
Continue is the broadest fit when Linux developers want the same assistant in VS Code or JetBrains and in a terminal, including interactive and headless CLI work. Cline is the clearest choice when human approval of edits and commands is central to an agentic workflow. Aider fits developers who want AI pair programming directly in the shell and Git loop. Tabby fits organizations that prioritize self-hosted, on-premises control, an OpenAPI service and the option to run without a required cloud service.
None can be declared the universal winner from the available official documentation. Select two candidates that match your operating model, test them on your own repositories with the same model and tasks, and keep the tool whose controls, deployment burden and verified results fit your Linux environment.
