Joplin is the best starting point for most people who want an open-source Google Keep alternative that syncs across devices. It is offline-first, keeps notes on your phone or computer, and supports several sync destinations: Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, and a local filesystem. Synchronization runs in the background while the app is open, and you can also start it manually.

That is not a universal verdict. Notesnook and Standard Notes deserve attention when encrypted private notes are the priority; Logseq fits a structured, linked knowledge base; and Nextcloud Notes makes sense if you already operate a Nextcloud server. The right choice depends on whether you value quick capture, browser access, self-hosting, offline work, encryption, or a workflow that is more structured than Google Keep.

Which open-source Google Keep alternative should you choose?

Use this short guide before installing anything:

  • Choose Joplin if you want a conventional notes app, offline access, and the widest documented choice of sync destinations.
  • Consider Notesnook if a privacy-first, zero-knowledge design is more important than choosing your own sync backend. Confirm its current platform coverage, hosting model, license scope, and plan limits before committing.
  • Consider Standard Notes if end-to-end encrypted notes are your main requirement. Check current restrictions on plans, platforms, sharing, and self-hosting.
  • Choose Logseq if you want linked, structured notes and a knowledge-management workflow rather than a simple list of sticky notes.
  • Choose Nextcloud Notes if you already run Nextcloud or are prepared to operate that environment. It is a different choice from using Nextcloud storage as Joplin’s sync destination.

There is no evidence here that all five products offer the same browser experience, import tools, encryption defaults, collaboration features, or pricing. Those details can change, so verify them in the current documentation for the exact app and plan you intend to use.

What makes an alternative genuinely useful?

Google Keep’s appeal is its low friction: capture a short note, open the same account elsewhere, and continue. An open-source replacement has to solve more than note editing. It must give you a practical way to move data between your Android phone, a Linux or Windows computer, and any browser-only environment where you cannot install software.

Evaluate each candidate on seven separate questions:

  1. Capture: Can you create and find a note quickly, or does the app assume a longer, more structured writing session?
  2. Client coverage: Are there usable clients for the devices you actually own, and is browser access confirmed rather than assumed?
  3. Sync ownership: Does the project provide hosted sync, connect to a service you already use, or require you to operate storage yourself?
  4. Privacy model: Is encryption described as available, enabled by default, or part of a zero-knowledge design? Those are different claims.
  5. Offline behavior: Can you read and edit notes without a connection, and when are changes uploaded?
  6. Portability: What formats can you export or import, and can you recover your notes if you stop using the service?
  7. Cost and limits: Which capabilities are free, and which depend on a current paid plan or hosted allowance?

The official descriptions available for these projects do not establish a complete, current matrix for every question. Treat the table below as a fit guide, not a substitute for checking the app’s current terms.

Comparison at a glance

Option Best fit Sync or storage approach described by the project Offline or privacy information Important qualification
Joplin General note-taking with control over sync Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, or local filesystem Offline-first; end-to-end encryption is available for synchronization Setup effort and encryption configuration vary by destination; browser availability is not established here
Notesnook Privacy-focused notes Sync details and self-hosting status require current documentation Official positioning uses “zero knowledge” Current clients, license scope, and free-versus-paid boundaries are not established here
Standard Notes Encrypted notes Current sync and hosting details require verification Official positioning describes end-to-end encryption Check current plans, platforms, collaboration, and self-hosting terms
Logseq Linked, structured knowledge management Current sync arrangements require verification Repository describes a privacy-first, open-source knowledge-management and collaboration platform Its workflow may feel less like quick sticky-note capture
Nextcloud Notes People already operating Nextcloud Runs within the Nextcloud ecosystem; server operation is your responsibility Depends on the security and administration of your Nextcloud deployment It is separate from using Nextcloud as Joplin’s storage backend

Why Joplin is the strongest general-purpose starting point

Joplin has the clearest documented match for the specific problem of syncing one note collection across different devices without locking you to one provider. Its listed destinations cover four distinct models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Managed service: Joplin Cloud, where the project provides the hosted destination.
  • Existing cloud accounts: Dropbox or OneDrive, useful if your household or organization already uses one of those services.
  • Self-managed or infrastructure-oriented storage: Nextcloud, S3, or WebDAV.
  • Local synchronization: a filesystem path, which can suit devices that share a reachable folder but does not automatically provide internet access.

These choices are not interchangeable. A hosted destination reduces server administration but makes you dependent on that account and its current terms. A self-managed destination gives you more control over where the data lives, while backups, updates, availability, and access control become your responsibility. A local filesystem avoids a hosted account but only works where the participating devices can reach the same path.

Offline-first behavior

Joplin describes itself as offline-first. Your notes remain on the phone or computer, so reading and editing do not require a live connection. When the application is running, synchronization happens in the background, and a manual sync can also be started. Offline-first does not mean that every edit is instantly present on every device: each device must eventually connect to the chosen destination and complete its sync.

Encryption needs a precise reading

Joplin’s project documentation describes end-to-end encryption for synchronization with services including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Joplin Cloud. That establishes availability, not a guarantee that every installation has identical defaults or recovery behavior. Before relying on it for sensitive material, identify when encryption is enabled, how keys are protected, what happens if a password is lost, and whether shared notes or attachments follow the same rules.

What Joplin does not prove for a browser-only workplace

A reader who cannot install software on a work Windows computer may need a web application. The material available here confirms Joplin’s desktop and mobile projects and its sync destinations, but it does not establish a current browser client or the capabilities of one. Do not assume that a synchronized account automatically provides a full web editor. Check the current official client list before making Joplin your only work-access plan.

A cautious Joplin setup sequence

  1. List every device. Record the phones, personal computers, and any browser-only machine that must read or edit the notes.
  2. Choose the destination model. Pick Joplin Cloud, an existing cloud account, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, or a local filesystem according to who should operate it and where you want the data stored.
  3. Configure one primary device first. Let the initial library finish synchronizing before adding several more clients. This gives you a known baseline for troubleshooting.
  4. Decide on encryption and recovery. If you enable end-to-end encryption, store the recovery information separately from the device that contains the notes. Losing the key can make encrypted data unrecoverable.
  5. Add the remaining devices. Confirm that each one points to the same destination and account, rather than creating separate libraries.
  6. Test offline work. Disconnect one device, create or edit a test note, reconnect it, and verify that the change reaches another device.
  7. Test restoration. Keep an independent backup and perform a small restore exercise before moving your only copy of important records.

Notesnook: a candidate for privacy-first notes

Notesnook’s official product description presents it as open source and zero knowledge. That positioning makes it a logical candidate when you want encrypted private notes rather than a broad choice of storage backends.

“Zero knowledge” is a product description, not a universal security specification. Before choosing it, verify which clients are supported today, how synchronization works, whether self-hosting is available, which components are covered by the open-source license, and which features require payment. Also check key recovery: a design that prevents the provider from reading your notes may limit what support can do if you lose your credentials or recovery material.

Notesnook is therefore a privacy comparison, not a documented replacement for Joplin’s many sync destinations. Choose it when its current encryption and device coverage match your needs, not solely because the phrase “zero knowledge” appears on its product page.

Standard Notes: encrypted notes with details to verify

Standard Notes’ official page describes end-to-end encryption, and its source repository is available. That makes it relevant for readers whose first question is whether the service provider can read their notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End-to-end encryption still leaves practical questions: Which features are included on the plan you will use? Are all attachments, searches, sharing functions, and clients covered in the same way? What are the recovery options if you lose access? The current material does not establish those answers, so check the project’s live documentation before migrating a large archive or depending on a workplace browser.

Standard Notes is best treated as an encrypted-notes option requiring plan and platform verification. It should not be described as having the same sync destinations or self-hosting model as Joplin without current evidence.

Logseq: a different workflow, not a Keep clone

Logseq’s repository describes a privacy-first, open-source knowledge-management and collaboration platform. That points to a structured workflow: notes are organized as a knowledge base, with relationships and long-lived context taking more importance than a stream of short reminders.

Logseq can be a better fit when you want meeting records connected to projects, research notes linked over time, or a system that encourages deliberate organization. It may be a worse fit when your goal is to jot a shopping item, pin a short reminder, and move on. Its current sync arrangements, platform coverage, collaboration behavior, and plan details should be checked directly before you choose it for a multi-device setup.

Nextcloud Notes: for people who already run the ecosystem

Nextcloud Notes is an open-source notes project in the Nextcloud ecosystem. It is most relevant when you already operate Nextcloud, have an administrator responsible for it, or deliberately want to manage the server that stores your notes.

Self-hosting changes the responsibility boundary. You control the server location, accounts, backups, updates, TLS configuration, and access policies. You also have to keep the service available, repair it when it fails, and ensure that mobile and desktop clients can reach it. A managed Nextcloud host can reduce that work, but it remains a hosting relationship rather than the same thing as using Joplin Cloud.

Do not confuse two choices: Joplin connected to Nextcloud uses Joplin as the note application and Nextcloud as its synchronization destination; Nextcloud Notes uses the Nextcloud Notes application itself. They can share infrastructure while providing different editing and organization experiences.

Self-hosted sync versus hosted sync

Question Hosted destination Self-managed destination
Who operates the service? The provider operates the sync service and infrastructure. You or an administrator operate the server, storage, updates, and access.
Where is control concentrated? Account terms, service availability, and provider policies matter most. Infrastructure and policy control are greater, but so is operational responsibility.
What happens during an outage? You wait for the provider or use local offline copies until service returns. You diagnose and repair your own deployment, unless a host manages it for you.
What must be backed up? Your local notes and any provider-specific recovery data still need protection. The server, database or files, encryption keys, and configuration all need a tested backup.

Self-hosting is not automatically more private or more reliable. A neglected server with weak access controls can be riskier than a carefully managed hosted account. Decide whether the benefit you want is jurisdictional control, avoiding a vendor account, customization, or simply learning to operate the service; each goal has a different cost in time and risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and open-source claims: how to compare them honestly

“Open source” can describe an application client, a server component, or only part of a larger hosted product. Confirm the license and source availability for the exact component you would run. An open client does not automatically make a hosted synchronization service fully self-hostable.

Likewise, the phrases “end-to-end encrypted,” “zero knowledge,” and “encrypted synchronization” should not be treated as synonyms. Ask:

  • Is encryption enabled by default or does the user configure it?
  • Are note titles, metadata, attachments, search indexes, and shared content protected in the same way?
  • Who holds the keys, and can the provider reset an account without them?
  • What recovery path exists after a lost password or damaged device?
  • Can you export readable data before closing the account?

The available project descriptions support careful attribution of these privacy positions, but they do not constitute an independent audit or a complete threat-model comparison.

How to decide when your devices include Android, Linux, Windows, and a browser-only PC

Start with the least flexible device: the computer where you cannot install software. If that machine needs to edit notes, browser access is a hard requirement and must be confirmed for the candidate you select. If it only needs occasional reading, you may be able to use another approved access method, but do not design around an unverified web client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Mark each device as editor or reader. A phone that captures notes has different requirements from a locked-down work computer that only needs to view them.
  2. Confirm client availability. Check the current project documentation for Android, Linux, Windows, and browser support separately; “cross-platform” is too vague.
  3. Choose the sync operator. Select a hosted account if you want less administration, or a self-managed destination if control is worth the maintenance.
  4. Run a small pilot. Use a handful of non-sensitive notes, edit them on two devices, and test offline behavior before migrating your archive.
  5. Document recovery. Record the account, destination, encryption settings, and backup location so another trusted person can restore access if necessary.

Migrating from Google Keep without creating a lock-in problem

Migration quality depends on export and import support that can change independently of the note app itself. Before deleting anything, inventory labels, pinned notes, checklists, images, voice recordings, and shared notes. Determine what format you can export from Keep and whether the target application can import it; if either side lacks a direct path, plan for a controlled manual migration of the notes that matter most.

Keep the original account intact during the trial. Move a representative sample first, including a long note, a checklist, an attachment, and a note with labels. Compare text, dates, formatting, and attachments on every device. Only after the sample is correct should you move the remaining archive and establish an independent backup.

Sync failure checklist

When a note does not appear on another device, isolate the failure instead of repeatedly editing the same note:

  • Check connectivity and account identity. The two devices must reach the same destination with the same account or server path.
  • Check whether the first device has completed synchronization. Background sync requires the app to be running; use the app’s manual sync action when available.
  • Check storage and server health. A full filesystem, unavailable WebDAV endpoint, expired cloud authorization, or stopped self-hosted service can all look like a note-app problem.
  • Check encryption configuration. Mismatched keys or incomplete setup can prevent a device from reading synchronized content.
  • Stop creating competing edits. Save a copy of the text, then resolve the original conflict methodically rather than overwriting changes on several devices.
  • Restore from a known backup if necessary. Do not treat synchronization as a backup; a deletion can synchronize just as easily as a new note.

Final recommendation

For most readers replacing Google Keep, start with Joplin and choose the sync destination that matches your tolerance for administration. Its combination of offline-first storage, background and manual synchronization, and hosted, self-managed, third-party, and local destinations gives you the clearest path across phones and computers.

Choose a different project when the priority changes: Notesnook or Standard Notes for a privacy-led decision after verifying their current details; Logseq for a linked knowledge base; or Nextcloud Notes when you want the Nextcloud application and are ready to run that ecosystem. In every case, confirm browser access, encryption defaults, recovery, export, and current plan boundaries before moving irreplaceable notes.
