There is no single best open-source desktop agent. The right choice depends on whether your work stays inside a browser, crosses native applications and local files, needs an MCP control layer, targets software development, or should run in an isolated cloud computer. For cross-application knowledge work, Interpreter’s desktop documentation is the closest fit. For tasks in an already signed-in Chrome or Chromium session, open-browser-use is more targeted. For native controls exposed to another MCP-capable agent, open-computer-use is the relevant layer. OpenHands is better understood as developer-agent infrastructure, while E2B Open Computer Use provides a cloud Linux sandbox rather than control of your everyday local machine.

Quick comparison

Project What it controls Where it runs Best fit Important limitation
Interpreter / Interpreter Workstation Desktop apps, browser tabs, files, spreadsheets, PDFs and documents Local computer or a remote computer through its browser bridge; self-hostable workstation option Cross-app everyday knowledge work Capabilities are documented project claims, not comparable hands-on success rates; source builds have a substantial toolchain
open-browser-use An existing signed-in Chrome or Chromium session Local browser integration Invoices, dashboards, forms and repeat web tasks Its accessed repository describes a macOS/Linux preview and it does not operate arbitrary native desktop applications
open-computer-use Native applications through clicks, typing, keypresses, scrolling, dragging and accessibility controls Local macOS, Windows or Linux computer through MCP Giving an MCP-capable agent desktop control It is an MCP server, not a complete end-user assistant; permissions and available window tools vary by operating system
OpenHands Agent workspaces and development tasks Laptop, dedicated machine, cloud VM or hosted cloud Developer automation, agent infrastructure and scheduled engineering work Sources reviewed present it primarily as a development platform, not a turnkey consumer desktop helper
E2B Open Computer Use A streamed Linux computer controlled by keyboard, mouse and shell actions Cloud sandbox Isolated, reproducible computer-use experiments Files and credentials are handled in a remote environment, not directly on your daily local desktop

The distinctions in that table matter more than a simple ranking. An agent that can fill a form in a browser is not automatically able to edit a spreadsheet in a native application. A project that is open source may still require a paid model provider, cloud infrastructure or an API key. “Local” can describe where the control process runs while inference or the computer being controlled remains remote.

What counts as an open-source AI desktop agent?

Computer-use projects are built from several layers that are often described as if they were one product:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The agent: the model-driven component that plans a task, interprets screen or accessibility information and chooses actions.
  • The control layer: browser automation, operating-system accessibility APIs, keyboard and mouse events, or shell commands.
  • The model: a local model or an external provider that turns instructions and observations into actions. Open source does not mean inference is free or necessarily local.
  • The execution environment: your own workstation, a remote machine, a virtual machine or a hosted sandbox.
  • The approval boundary: pauses, permission prompts and checkpoints that keep an agent from sending, deleting, purchasing or changing an account without review.

Before installing anything, identify which of those layers a project actually supplies. Interpreter presents a broad desktop workflow. open-browser-use concentrates on a logged-in browser. open-computer-use supplies native-control tools through MCP. OpenHands supplies a development-oriented agent platform. E2B supplies an isolated computer in the cloud. Treating them as interchangeable “desktop assistants” leads to the wrong setup and the wrong security expectations.

Interpreter: the closest match for cross-app everyday work

What it is designed to do

Interpreter’s desktop documentation describes workflows that move between browser tabs, files, spreadsheets, PDFs, documents and desktop applications. Its listed examples include reading and editing files, operating applications through clicks and menus, working across web portals and dashboards, extracting document data into structured formats, accepting voice instructions and connecting through MCP integrations. That breadth makes it the strongest fit in this group when a task genuinely crosses application boundaries.

Examples of the kind of workflow this design targets include collecting figures from several PDFs, placing the results in a spreadsheet, checking a web dashboard and preparing a document from the combined information. A browser-only tool may complete only the web portion; an MCP desktop-control server may provide the controls but leave planning and task management to another agent.

Review pauses and consequential actions

The documentation says Interpreter pauses for review before actions that submit, send, delete or overwrite. This is a useful safety boundary for everyday work because the agent can prepare a message or form without silently committing it. Do not transfer that guarantee to the other projects in this list: their documentation must be checked for the exact approval behavior of the configuration you deploy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even with a review pause, use a separate test folder and non-production account for initial runs. A review prompt is not a substitute for checking the recipient, attachment, destination, amount or records selected by the agent.

Interpreter Workstation setup implications

The Interpreter Workstation repository describes an account-optional, self-hostable workspace. It can use supported cloud providers or local models, operate against the local computer or a remote computer through a browser bridge and restrict which files and applications the agent can access. Those controls let you choose a narrower operating boundary than giving an agent unrestricted access to your whole home directory.

The listed build requirements are Node.js 22, pnpm 9, Bun, Rust stable with Cargo and Git with submodule support. That is a meaningful source-build toolchain. The documentation does not establish that every casual user must compile the workstation from source, so check the project’s current distribution options before assuming a build is required. If you do build it, record the runtime versions and keep the project’s permissions scoped to a dedicated workspace.

When to choose it

  • Choose Interpreter when one instruction must span native apps, local documents and websites.
  • Choose it when approval before sending, submitting, deleting or overwriting is a central requirement.
  • Choose the workstation path when you need a self-hostable deployment, a remote computer connection or explicit file and application restrictions.

Do not describe it as independently proven to complete every desktop task. The available material documents features and deployment options, not a reproducible head-to-head success rate.

open-browser-use: use an existing signed-in browser session

Why its boundary is useful

open-browser-use is specifically aimed at controlling a user’s real, signed-in Chrome or Chromium session. That is valuable when the required work depends on an existing login, cookies, extensions or a browser profile that a separate automation browser would not have. Listed examples include downloading invoices, extracting information from a dashboard, filling a form using a PDF and repeating a grocery order.

Because the agent operates within the browser boundary, it can reuse the session you already authenticated. That does not make it a general desktop agent: it should not be presented as a tool for arbitrary native applications, local spreadsheet windows or system settings.

Preview status and installation

The repository state described for this guide calls the current version a preview for macOS and Linux. It requires manually loading the extension from a GitHub release. Browser and release compatibility can change, so verify the current release instructions and supported Chrome or Chromium versions before installation. A manual extension load also means that deployment and updates are more hands-on than installing a conventional store extension.

The project is described as running locally, integrating through MCP and using an MIT license. Local control can reduce the need to hand a browser session to a hosted automation service, but the model provider and any connected MCP client may still be remote. Trace where page content, cookies, screenshots and task instructions travel before using a sensitive account.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Good and bad use cases

  • Good: retrieve monthly invoices from a portal, copy values from a dashboard, complete a web form using information in a PDF or repeat a routine online order after you review the final cart.
  • Bad fit: rename files in Finder or Explorer, edit a native desktop spreadsheet, change an operating-system setting or coordinate work across a browser and several non-browser applications.

For purchases, account changes and submissions, configure an explicit stop before the final action even if the browser task itself is routine. Existing login state increases convenience and increases the consequence of an incorrect click.

open-computer-use: native desktop control through MCP

What the server exposes

open-computer-use is a local MCP server rather than a complete end-user agent. Its tools expose application listing and state, clicking, scrolling, dragging, typing, keypresses and setting control values through accessibility interfaces. An MCP-capable agent can use those tools to operate native applications, while the separate agent remains responsible for planning, model calls and conversational interaction.

This separation is useful if you already have an agent that speaks MCP and want to add operating-system controls without replacing your entire workflow. It is less suitable if you want a single packaged assistant that handles model selection, planning, approvals and desktop access in one interface.

Operating-system requirements

Operating system Documented requirement or status Practical implication
macOS macOS 14 or later requires Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions Grant both permissions to the intended process, then test on a non-sensitive application before giving it access to production work
Windows Windows is supported; some newer window-level tools are documented as Windows-only Do not assume every macOS or Linux tool is available on Windows, or that the newer window controls are portable
Linux Requires AT-SPI2 in a signed-in desktop session A headless shell or login screen is not equivalent to the supported desktop session; verify AT-SPI2 visibility before troubleshooting the agent

The documentation describes macOS and Linux support for newer window-level features as in progress. Check the project’s current capability matrix rather than inferring parity from the operating-system list.

Permission and failure checklist

  1. Install the MCP server and connect it to an MCP-capable agent.
  2. On macOS, open the system Privacy and Security settings and grant Accessibility and Screen Recording to the exact application or runtime launching the server.
  3. On Linux, sign in to the graphical desktop and confirm AT-SPI2 is available to the session.
  4. Ask the agent to list applications or inspect a harmless window before attempting clicks or text entry.
  5. Start with read-only tasks. Add typing, dragging and control changes only after the agent identifies the intended window correctly.

If application listing works but clicks do nothing, check the permission owner and foreground window first. If Linux exposes no controls, check the signed-in desktop and AT-SPI2 rather than changing model settings. If a window tool appears unavailable, confirm whether that feature is currently limited to Windows.

OpenHands: developer-agent infrastructure, not a general desktop shortcut

What the reviewed documentation supports

OpenHands is presented primarily as an AI development platform. Its Agent Server can run on a laptop, a dedicated machine such as a Mac mini, a cloud virtual machine or OpenHands Cloud. Its Automation Server can schedule work or trigger it from events. Those deployment choices are useful when you are building recurring engineering workflows, agent services or a controlled host for development tasks.

A dedicated machine is optional infrastructure, not a requirement for every user. The same server can be hosted on a laptop, cloud VM or the hosted option described by the project. Choose a dedicated host when isolation, uptime or a clean development environment matters; do not buy hardware merely because an agent platform supports it.

Why it ranks differently for everyday computer tasks

The sources reviewed do not establish OpenHands as a turnkey assistant for arbitrary personal desktop work such as organizing photos, editing office documents and managing browser errands. Its strengths are configurable agent infrastructure, development tooling and automation triggers. If your primary goal is recurring software-engineering work, it may be the most relevant architecture in this shortlist. If your goal is to operate several unrelated desktop applications interactively, Interpreter or a dedicated MCP desktop-control setup is a more direct match.

E2B Open Computer Use: a cloud Linux computer

How the sandbox differs from local control

E2B’s Open Computer Use describes a cloud Linux computer controlled with keyboard, mouse and shell actions. A live display stream lets a person pause the agent and provide another prompt. This creates an isolated execution environment that can be reset or separated from the files and credentials on your everyday workstation.

That isolation is also a deployment boundary. The agent is not operating your local desktop merely because the project is open source. Files must be uploaded or created in the cloud computer, and credentials used there are exposed to that environment according to your configuration. A cloud sandbox is attractive for experiments, reproducible tasks and risky automation that you do not want touching your personal machine; it is inconvenient when the task depends on local applications, local files or an existing desktop login.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later.
  • An E2B API key.
  • An API key for the model provider you select.

Those requirements mean the software may be open source while the runtime still depends on external services and usage-based credentials. Budget for provider and infrastructure usage separately from the installation effort, because no universal “free local” setup is established here.

Which agent should you choose?

Choose by the task boundary

  1. Browser only: If every step stays in a signed-in Chrome or Chromium session, start with open-browser-use. Its narrow scope avoids granting an agent native desktop access it does not need.
  2. Browser plus local files or native applications: Use a cross-app desktop agent such as Interpreter, or combine an MCP-capable agent with open-computer-use when you want to assemble the control layer yourself.
  3. Native desktop controls for an existing agent: Choose open-computer-use and verify the operating-system permissions and feature availability before designing the workflow.
  4. Developer automation and scheduled engineering work: Evaluate OpenHands. Its server and automation components are oriented toward agent infrastructure rather than casual desktop errands.
  5. Isolated cloud execution: Choose E2B Open Computer Use when a remote Linux sandbox is acceptable and you want a streamed computer that can be paused and prompted.

Choose by where data and credentials stay

Map the path of every sensitive item: browser cookies, screenshots, document contents, model prompts, API keys and generated files. A local browser integration is different from a cloud sandbox. A local control server may still call a remote model. A remote computer may be safer for isolation but unsuitable for a local-only compliance requirement. Write down the exact deployment—local process, remote computer, cloud VM or hosted service—before approving access to a work account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by model and setup effort

Interpreter Workstation can use supported cloud providers or local models. E2B requires a model-provider key as well as its own API key. open-computer-use assumes a separate MCP-capable agent. OpenHands has several server-hosting paths. These are different setup shapes, not interchangeable checkboxes. Confirm model compatibility, runtime versions and credentials before investing time in a workflow.

Can an AI agent use my computer and existing browser login?

Yes, open-browser-use is explicitly designed around a real signed-in Chrome or Chromium session. That is the clearest answer when the task is entirely in the browser. A broader desktop agent may also work with a browser, but the evidence here is not a guarantee that it can safely reuse every profile, extension or authentication flow.

Use a dedicated browser profile when possible. Remove unrelated accounts, restrict saved payment methods and start with a low-impact task such as reading a dashboard. Before allowing a submission or purchase, require a human checkpoint and verify the account, destination and final values. Never assume that a familiar login makes an automated session safe for unattended account changes.

Can you run a computer-use agent locally with your own model?

Sometimes, depending on the project and model. Interpreter Workstation documents support for local models as well as supported cloud providers. open-browser-use and open-computer-use describe local control components, but a complete workflow still needs an agent and model. E2B’s documented setup requires a model-provider API key, so its standard path is not a fully local inference stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Local” should therefore be specified precisely: local inference, local control process, local computer, or all three. If privacy requires that document contents never leave the machine, verify the model endpoint, logging, telemetry and any remote browser or computer bridge rather than relying on the project’s open-source label.

Safety controls for everyday automation

  • Limit the workspace: Give access to a dedicated folder and test account instead of an entire home directory or production profile.
  • Separate preparation from commitment: Let the agent draft, collect and organize, then require approval before sending, submitting, deleting, overwriting, purchasing or changing account settings.
  • Use least privilege: Grant only the macOS Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions, Linux desktop access or browser profile actually needed.
  • Keep secrets out of prompts: Prefer the tool’s credential mechanism and short-lived keys; do not paste passwords into task text.
  • Observe the first runs: Watch the live display or desktop and record which files, windows and URLs the agent touches.
  • Provide a stop path: Know how to pause the agent, revoke a session, disable an extension and terminate the remote computer.

Interpreter documents review pauses for submit, send, delete and overwrite. For open-browser-use, open-computer-use, OpenHands and E2B, configure and test your own checkpoints rather than assuming the same pause behavior.

What reliability evidence exists?

The available material does not establish a comparative reliability winner among these projects. The project descriptions are feature and setup claims, not a reproducible head-to-head test. Avoid labels such as “most accurate” or “most reliable” unless you have a defined task set, identical model conditions, failure accounting and repeatable measurements.

A 2026 OpenComputer paper reports a framework covering 33 desktop applications and 1,000 finalized tasks. It also reports that frontier agents can struggle to finish an end-to-end task even after making partial progress, and that open-source models can show sharp drops from OSWorld-Verified scores. Those figures describe benchmark coverage and category-level behavior; they are not scores for Interpreter, open-browser-use, open-computer-use, OpenHands or E2B.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For your own evaluation, create ten to twenty representative tasks, run each several times, count partial completions and unsafe actions, and record the model, operating system, permissions and execution location. Keep browser-only, native-app and cross-app tasks separate so a tool is judged against the boundary it claims to serve.

A practical first-run plan

  1. Define one reversible task. Choose a task that can be undone, such as extracting data into a disposable document.
  2. Select the narrowest suitable tool. Use open-browser-use for browser-only work; use Interpreter for cross-app work; use open-computer-use only when an existing MCP agent needs native controls; use E2B when a cloud sandbox is acceptable.
  3. Prepare the environment. Confirm operating-system support, runtime versions, browser release requirements, model credentials and API keys.
  4. Reduce access. Create a test account, profile and folder. Grant only the required accessibility, screen-recording or desktop-session permissions.
  5. Run in observation mode. Ask for reading or listing first, then inspect the proposed action before enabling typing, deletion, submission or shell commands.
  6. Add a human checkpoint. Stop before any irreversible or externally visible action and verify the exact target.
  7. Document the result. Record failures, unexpected windows, missing permissions, model latency and where data was processed.
  8. Expand gradually. Add one application, file location or account at a time; keep the original rollback path.

Bottom line

For an everyday workflow that genuinely crosses applications, files and websites, Interpreter is the closest match in this shortlist, with documented review pauses for several consequential actions. For a task that lives inside an existing signed-in browser, open-browser-use is the more focused choice. Choose open-computer-use when you already have an MCP-capable agent and need native controls. Choose OpenHands for configurable developer-agent infrastructure and scheduled engineering automation. Choose E2B Open Computer Use when you specifically want a remote Linux sandbox and accept cloud execution.

Whichever path you take, judge the deployment boundary—not the “desktop agent” label. Verify the operating system, permissions, model location, credentials, approval behavior and data path before allowing automation to touch real accounts or irreplaceable files.
