Recommended Free Tools
For most WordPress writers, the best starting point is a browser extension such as Grammarly or LanguageTool. It checks text as you type in the block editor without adding another WordPress plugin. Choose a dedicated plugin such as Jetpack’s proofreading tools or WProofreader when inline dashboard integration matters most; use Hemingway Editor for a separate readability pass, not as a complete grammar replacement.
The right choice depends on where you want suggestions, which languages and varieties you write, how much style or SEO feedback you need, and whether the free plan’s limits fit your publishing volume.
What kind of WordPress grammar checker do you need?
WordPress proofreading tools fall into three workflows. A browser extension overlays suggestions in the editor, a WordPress plugin adds checking inside the dashboard, and a stand-alone editor requires a copy-and-paste or export step. These approaches are not interchangeable: an excellent readability editor may be inconvenient for live editing, while a convenient extension may offer less advanced feedback on a free plan.
- Inline while writing: Use a browser extension or WordPress plugin.
- Separate final edit: Use a web or desktop editor after drafting.
- Multilingual publishing: Check the vendor’s current language and regional-variant list before committing.
- SEO-led content production: Consider a writing assistant that combines grammar, readability and search-oriented guidance.

Detailed tool guidance
Grammarly: the familiar browser-first choice
Grammarly’s browser add-on can place suggestions directly in supported WordPress editing fields, while its web editor offers a separate workspace. That makes it practical when you want feedback during drafting without installing a dashboard plugin. WPBeginner describes the free tier as limited and advanced suggestions as paid. Treat those as plan-level observations and confirm the current offer before subscribing.
LanguageTool: broad integration and multilingual writing
LanguageTool’s official services listing includes add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera, plus desktop, mobile, mail and document integrations. WPBeginner presents it as a multilingual option and reports that its team switched from Grammarly; that is an editorial preference, not proof that it is universally more accurate. Confirm the languages, regional varieties, character limits and WordPress behavior you need.
QuillBot: grammar plus rewriting tools
QuillBot combines an online grammar checker with browser and office extensions, paraphrasing and summarizing features. The cited comparison lists English, French, Spanish and German support and describes its grammar corrections as relatively basic. It can suit writers who also need rewriting tools, but compare the correction depth with your own editing requirements and verify current plan restrictions.
Semrush SEO Writing Assistant: for search-oriented content teams
Semrush’s writing assistant combines grammar and readability feedback with an SEO-oriented workflow and can connect to WordPress through add-ons. Some functions require a paid account. Choose it when briefs, optimization guidance and content scoring belong in the same process; do not treat it as a lightweight spelling plugin.

Ginger: rephrasing and translation in a browser add-on
Ginger is described as usable in WordPress writing fields and includes rephrasing and translation features. WPBeginner notes limited free functionality and reported glitches. Those comments are attributed editorial observations, so test it in your browser, theme and editor before making it part of a team workflow.
Hemingway Editor: a final clarity pass
Hemingway is a separate web editor focused on readability and style. It does not operate directly inside the WordPress post editor, so the workflow involves moving text between tools. Use it to find dense sentences and clarity problems after grammar correction; do not rely on it alone for comprehensive grammar checking.
WordPress plugins versus browser extensions
When a browser extension is the better fit
- You write in the standard block editor and want suggestions without changing the site’s plugin stack.
- You publish across several sites or also write email and documents.
- You want to try a service before granting a WordPress plugin access to the dashboard.
When a plugin makes sense
- Your team needs an inline, dashboard-centered workflow.
- You prefer site-level configuration instead of each writer managing a browser add-on.
- You have confirmed that the plugin is maintained and compatible with your WordPress and editor versions.
Liquid Web identifies Jetpack proofreading tools and WProofreader as plugin paths. Plugin names, features and maintenance status can change, so check the current WordPress directory or vendor documentation before installation.
How to set up a practical proofreading workflow
- Draft in WordPress with one active checker. Enable your chosen browser extension or plugin and avoid stacking several tools that may issue conflicting rewrites.
- Review suggestions manually. Accept corrections only when they preserve the intended meaning, names, links, code, product terms and regional spelling.
- Run a separate readability pass when needed. Move a clean draft into Hemingway or another stand-alone editor if sentence length and clarity are a priority.
- Inspect the rendered post. Check headings, lists, captions, links, embedded media and mobile layout; grammar tools do not validate the final visual presentation.
- Proofread high-risk content yourself. Medical, legal, financial, technical and multilingual copy needs subject expertise beyond automated suggestions.
Free plans, privacy and compatibility
Free tiers, document or character limits and paid-only features vary by vendor and can change. The cited sources do not provide a complete current price audit. Check each product’s current plan page before publishing a cost comparison.
Rank #3
Most online checkers process text through a vendor service. The available sources do not establish current privacy policies for these products. Review data-retention, account, enterprise and opt-out terms directly, especially before submitting confidential drafts, unpublished client work or personal information.
Before installing anything, test the exact combination of browser, WordPress version, block or classic editor, multilingual plugin and theme used by your site. A tool that works in a plain text box may behave differently in a custom page builder or a rich-text field.

Choose a WordPress plugin when
Inline dashboard operation is more important than portability, and you have verified current maintenance and editor compatibility for Jetpack or WProofreader.
Use the browser’s built-in checker when
You need a no-cost baseline for typos and understand that it will not catch most grammar, tone or style issues.
Bottom line
There is no single best grammar checker for every WordPress workflow. Start with a browser extension for the least-friction inline experience, choose LanguageTool when multilingual coverage and integrations lead, consider Semrush for SEO-led teams, and add Hemingway only for a separate readability pass. Use Jetpack or WProofreader when a maintained, WordPress-native plugin is your priority, and verify current limits, compatibility and privacy terms before standardizing on any product.
