Best overall for a permanent account history: Wise Old Man. It stores opt-in hiscore snapshots, calculates gains between snapshots, and adds group and clan tools. Best for complicated plans: OSRS Goal Planner, a RuneLite sidebar that builds prerequisite trees for quests, diaries, bosses, items, combat achievements, and milestones. Best for straightforward skill targets: RuneLite’s built-in XP Tracker.
These tools solve different problems. Wise Old Man tells you how your account has changed; OSRS Goal Planner shows what must be completed before a target is reachable; RuneLite XP Tracker keeps a narrow set of skill and experience targets visible while you play. The right choice depends on whether you need history, dependency planning, or simple level tracking.

What an OSRS progression tracker should do
Long-term Old School RuneScape goals fail for predictable reasons: a player forgets which requirements remain, loses motivation when progress is spread across several skills, or cannot tell whether an account is improving over weeks and months. A useful tracker should therefore answer at least one of four questions:
- What have I completed? Quest, diary, boss, item and achievement status should be visible without relying on memory.
- What blocks my next objective? A prerequisite-aware tool should expose missing skills, earlier quests, items, account metrics and kill counts.
- How much have I improved? Historical snapshots can show gains over a chosen period rather than only the current level.
- What should I work on during this session? A lightweight XP target keeps a single milestone in view while training.
No single option in this shortlist covers all four areas equally. Wise Old Man is a web-centered historical record, OSRS Goal Planner is a live in-client dependency planner, and RuneLite XP Tracker is a focused skill-goal display.

Quick comparison
| Tool | Historical account record | Goal types | Where automation runs | Group features | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wise Old Man | Strong: opt-in snapshots and gains over time | Hiscores, gains, achievements and groups | Website, RuneLite plugin or Discord bot | Strong: groups, competitions, clan rankings, member changes and inactivity views | Long-term history, accountability and clans |
| OSRS Goal Planner | Primarily live in-client goal state | Skills, quests, achievement diaries, combat achievements, bosses, items, milestones and prerequisites | RuneLite game-state updates | Limited in the cited documentation | Complex personal plans with blockers |
| RuneLite XP Tracker | Session/client progress rather than a web history | Skill levels and XP goals | Built into RuneLite | None in the cited documentation | One or several skill milestones |
The table is a division of labor, not a ranking of software quality. A player may reasonably use two or all three: Goal Planner for the account roadmap, XP Tracker for today’s training target, and Wise Old Man for a record that remains useful after a break.
Wise Old Man: best for historical progress and clans
How its history works
Wise Old Man is an open-source Old School RuneScape player progress tracker. It periodically checks official hiscores and stores snapshots of the account. Gains, records, achievements, activity and leaderboard position can then be viewed against those stored points in time.
Updates are opt-in rather than automatic server-wide collection. You can request an update on the Wise Old Man website, use its RuneLite plugin, or use its Discord bot. The documentation states that at least two snapshots are required before gains over a time window can be calculated. A first update creates a baseline; a later update is what turns that baseline into a measurable change.

- Durable account history: Review skill and hiscore changes after a week, month or longer interval instead of relying on a current screenshot.
- Periodic gain reports: Compare progress between snapshots and identify whether a training plan is producing the expected movement.
- Accountability: Groups, competitions and clan rankings make individual progress visible to a community.
- Roster management: Group tools include member-list changes and inactivity views, useful for clans that need to identify dormant accounts.
- Notifications: Discord integration can surface updates where a clan already coordinates activity.
Setup for a new account or a new project
- Create or update your Wise Old Man profile before beginning the long-term objective. Doing this early establishes the first historical snapshot.
- Choose an update method. Use the website for occasional manual checks, install the Wise Old Man RuneLite plugin for logout-based updates, or use the Discord bot when that fits your community workflow.
- Confirm that the account name and game mode are correct before treating the snapshot as your baseline.
- Request another update after a meaningful interval. Two snapshots are the minimum needed for a gain calculation, while additional snapshots create a more useful trend.
- For a clan, create or join a group and define the competition or ranking view that matches the objective. Keep the update cadence consistent across members so comparisons are fair.
How to use it for a long campaign
Set a review rhythm instead of repeatedly refreshing after every small activity. For example, capture a baseline before a month of quest and skill work, update after the month, and inspect gains alongside achievements completed during that period. The resulting record is especially valuable after a returning-player break: it shows the last known state and the progress made since, provided updates were requested.
Important limitations
Wise Old Man cannot infer a complete personal prerequisite route from a final objective. It records and reports account state; it does not replace a planner that expands a quest, diary or boss into every required skill, item and earlier completion. Its data also depends on snapshots being requested. If no update is made, there is no new point from which to calculate gains.

OSRS Goal Planner: best for prerequisite-aware objectives
What it tracks
OSRS Goal Planner is a RuneLite sidebar plugin designed around a top-level objective and the requirements beneath it. It covers skills, quests, achievement diaries, combat achievements, bosses, item grinds and account milestones. Adding a quest, diary or boss can seed a prerequisite tree containing skills, prior quests, items, account metrics and boss-kill requirements.
The cards in the planner update from the game state. Skill cards use XP, quest cards use completion state, diary cards use the relevant varbit, combat-achievement cards use task state, boss cards use kill counts, item cards use item counts, and account-metric cards use the corresponding account values. This makes the display useful while actively playing: completing a requirement changes the state without maintaining a separate spreadsheet by hand.
Building a dependency tree
- Install the OSRS Goal Planner plugin in RuneLite, then open its sidebar panel.
- Add the end goal first: select the quest, diary, boss, item grind or milestone that represents the result you actually want.
- Inspect the generated prerequisite tree rather than starting with a random training method. Separate requirements that are already complete from those that block the goal.
- Choose a small next milestone, such as one skill threshold, an earlier quest or a required item. Keep the top-level goal visible so the short task remains connected to the campaign.
- After completing the milestone in game, allow the planner to refresh from the updated game state and select the next unresolved branch.
Why it suits complex accounts
A quest-cape route, achievement-diary push or boss unlock often has cross-linked requirements. A simple level list may show that a skill is low but not that an earlier quest, item or account metric is also missing. Goal Planner is designed to expose those blockers in one place. It is therefore more appropriate than a pure XP display when the question is “what must happen next?” rather than “how much XP remains?”
Maintenance and availability caveat
OSRS Goal Planner is a RuneLite plugin project. Verify that the plugin is currently available and maintained before making it the only record for a campaign that may last many months. A plugin can be an excellent live planning surface while still benefiting from a separate historical record or written backup of the chosen milestones.
RuneLite XP Tracker: best for simple skill milestones
What it displays
RuneLite’s official XP Tracker supports level goals beyond the next level and displays progress toward the selected goal. After the selected goal is passed, it returns to showing progress toward the next level. This behavior keeps the panel useful for continuous training without requiring a new target after every level.

Setting a target
- Open RuneLite’s XP Tracker or XP/Level goals interface.
- Select the skill you intend to train and enter a target above the next level when the interface allows it.
- Use the displayed XP progress to measure the session, quest prerequisite or milestone.
- When the target is reached, confirm that the tracker has moved back to the next-level view or set a new longer-term target.
When it is enough
Use it for a 70, 80 or 90 milestone, a level 99 pursuit, or one or several skill requirements for a known quest. It has very little setup friction because it is part of RuneLite and does not require an external profile, snapshot schedule or group configuration.

Where it stops
The cited documentation covers skill and XP goals, not a complete account-wide system for quests, diaries, items, bosses or clan rankings. It can tell you how far a skill is from a target, but it will not by itself explain which earlier quest or item blocks a boss or diary objective. Pair it with OSRS Goal Planner when dependencies matter, or Wise Old Man when a historical web record matters.
Which tracker should you choose?
Choose Wise Old Man when history is the priority
Pick Wise Old Man if you want to answer questions such as “How much did this account gain during my break?” or “Which clan members have been inactive?” Its snapshot model, gain reports, groups and Discord notifications are the strongest match for long-running records and shared accountability.
Choose OSRS Goal Planner when blockers are the priority
Pick OSRS Goal Planner if you already know the destination but not the route. It is the best fit for a quest, diary, boss, item or combat-achievement campaign where several prerequisites must be surfaced and monitored inside the client.
Choose RuneLite XP Tracker when a number is the priority
Pick RuneLite XP Tracker if the goal can be expressed as “reach level X” or “earn Y XP.” It is the fastest option for a focused training session and avoids the overhead of maintaining an account-wide plan.

Use more than one when the campaign is long
A combined setup is often more practical than forcing one tool to do every job. Keep the final objective and its dependencies in Goal Planner, set the immediate skill target in RuneLite XP Tracker, and request Wise Old Man snapshots at planned review points. Each tool then records a different layer of the same campaign without duplicating the others.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workflow for long-term goals
- Define the outcome. Write the exact result: a named quest, diary tier, boss access, item, combat-achievement set or skill level.
- Build the dependency view. Add the outcome to OSRS Goal Planner and inspect every unresolved skill, quest, item, account metric and kill-count requirement.
- Order the blockers. Prefer requirements that unlock several later branches, then handle isolated requirements. This reduces backtracking without pretending that the plugin chooses a universal best order.
- Convert the next blocker into an XP target. Set that skill milestone in RuneLite’s XP/Level goals interface so today’s work has a measurable finish line.
- Capture the baseline. Update Wise Old Man before substantial training begins. Without this initial snapshot, later gains cannot be compared to the starting point.
- Work in review cycles. After a week, month or other meaningful interval, refresh the planner, check the XP target and request another Wise Old Man update.
- Record decisions outside the tools when needed. Note any chosen order, gear assumption or break from the plan in a personal document. The cited tools track account state, not your reasons for changing course.
- Re-scope after major progress. Remove completed branches, add the newly relevant objective and set the next XP milestone. A plan that is never revised becomes a checklist of outdated assumptions.
Example plans
Quest-cape preparation
Add the target quest or broader quest objective to OSRS Goal Planner. Let the dependency tree identify required skills and earlier quests, then choose one skill threshold as the current XP Tracker goal. Use Wise Old Man snapshots at the start and after each major block of quest and training work so the account history records both the skill gains and the completed achievements.
Achievement-diary push
Select the diary objective in Goal Planner and inspect the varbit-backed completion cards. Treat each unresolved skill, quest, item or account metric as a separate milestone. XP Tracker is useful for the next level-based requirement, while Wise Old Man provides a dated record of the overall account improvement rather than only the diary’s final state.
Boss preparation
Add the boss in Goal Planner and review its skill, item and kill-count requirements. Keep the top-level boss visible while using XP Tracker for the immediate combat-stat target. If the campaign spans several weeks, schedule Wise Old Man updates so you can distinguish training gains from the eventual boss-kill milestone.
Recommended Free Tools
Clan competition
Use Wise Old Man as the shared layer. Establish a baseline update for every participating account, agree on an update cadence, and use groups, competitions, rankings, member-list changes and inactivity views to keep the event organized. Individual players can still use Goal Planner or XP Tracker privately for the work that produces their gains.
Best Value
Data freshness, privacy and troubleshooting
A gain report is empty
Check whether the account has at least two Wise Old Man snapshots. A single snapshot is a baseline, not a period comparison. Request another update and allow the hiscore data to be captured before expecting a gain calculation.
The account history has a long gap
Wise Old Man cannot reconstruct snapshots that were never requested. Treat the next successful update as a new baseline for future comparisons and avoid presenting the gap as continuous measured progress.
A Goal Planner card looks wrong
Confirm that RuneLite has refreshed the relevant game state and that the requirement is being measured by the expected source: XP for skills, completion state for quests, varbit state for diaries, task state for combat achievements, kill counts for bosses, item counts for items and the appropriate account metric for account-level requirements. If a project is no longer maintained or available, verify its current status before depending on it for the rest of the campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA skill target has disappeared
RuneLite XP Tracker returns to the next-level view after a selected goal is passed. Set a new target if the training plan continues; the behavior indicates that the previous target was completed rather than that progress was lost.
You do not want automatic updates
Wise Old Man tracking is opt-in. Use manual website updates instead of the RuneLite plugin or Discord bot, and request snapshots only when you want a new historical point. The choice of update method changes convenience, not the need for a second snapshot when measuring gains.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different players
- Solo player planning a complicated objective: Start with OSRS Goal Planner, then use RuneLite XP Tracker for the next numeric milestone.
- Returning player who wants an account timeline: Start or refresh Wise Old Man early, then maintain snapshots at deliberate review points.
- Player training one skill toward a known level: RuneLite XP Tracker is sufficient and fastest to configure.
- Clan leader or competition organizer: Favor Wise Old Man because its groups, rankings, competitions, member changes, inactivity views and Discord notifications address shared progress.
- Long campaign requiring both planning and accountability: Combine all three, assigning each tool one job instead of expecting a single tracker to provide history, dependencies and session targets simultaneously.
