What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no single offline converter that is best for every file type. Choose the tool that matches the job: LibreOffice for office documents to PDF, XnConvert for batch image conversion, HandBrake for video transcoding, and Adobe Acrobat when you need its documented PDF-creation workflows and supported input formats.
All four can process files locally, but they differ in source formats, output controls, operating-system support, companion-app requirements, presets, and licensing. The practical choice is therefore a task decision, not a universal ranking.

Quick recommendations
| Your conversion job | Best starting point | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office document to PDF | LibreOffice | Desktop office-suite export with documented PDF command-line parameters | The documentation does not establish perfect fidelity for every proprietary format or feature. |
| PDF creation from many supported document types | Adobe Acrobat | Documented PDF workflows for Windows and macOS, with a broad supported-input list | Several inputs depend on a particular application or platform; Microsoft Office files require the corresponding Office version. |
| Many images at once | XnConvert | Batch image conversion for Windows and macOS with support for common image and graphics formats | Freeware applies to private or educational use; commercial use requires a license. |
| Video for a phone, TV, browser, or other playback device | HandBrake | Purpose-built video transcoding with device-oriented presets | Presets can change resolution, frame rate, audio, and other settings; memory and operating-system requirements are version-sensitive. |
These recommendations describe documented capabilities, not a speed, quality, or reliability contest. No comparative benchmark or hands-on test establishes one product as fastest or most faithful.

An offline converter performs the transformation on your Windows PC or Mac instead of uploading the source file to a web service. That can reduce exposure of confidential documents, avoid upload limits, and let you work without an internet connection after installation. It does not automatically mean that every feature works without network access: activation, updates, optional fonts, cloud-connected workflows, or a required companion application may still involve the internet.

“Converter” also covers several technically different jobs:
- Document export: A word-processing or spreadsheet file is laid out and rendered as PDF.
- Image conversion: Pixels are decoded, optionally resized or processed, and encoded in another image format, often repeatedly in a batch.
- Video transcoding: A video stream is decoded and re-encoded, usually changing codecs, containers, resolution, frame rate, audio, or all of them.
A tool that excels at one family may not open another family at all. Decide the source and destination pair first, then check the platform and dependency requirements.
How the four options differ
| Tool | Primary conversion family | Windows and Mac availability | Batch or preset emphasis | Dependencies and licensing points documented by the publisher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LibreOffice | Office documents to PDF | Windows command-line PDF export is documented; the cited help page is a PDF-export reference rather than an exhaustive cross-platform format matrix. | Command-line export parameters | Use it as a document-to-PDF workflow; the cited page does not prove support for every proprietary input or identical layout fidelity. |
| Adobe Acrobat | Creating PDFs from supported documents, text, images, HTML, PostScript, and other listed inputs | Windows and macOS workflows are documented | PDF-creation workflows rather than general-purpose media batching | Office conversion requires the corresponding Microsoft Office version; other formats have their own application or platform requirements. |
| XnConvert | Image and graphics conversion | Windows and macOS editions are listed | Batch processing | Freeware for private or educational use; commercial use requires a license. Confirm current terms before business use. |
| HandBrake | Video transcoding | Requirements change by release; the requirements page accessed in 2026 listed Windows 11 and macOS 14–15 and 26 as supported, with Windows 10 deprecated. | Compatibility-oriented presets | Presets can alter output settings. The project recommends substantial memory for HD and 4K work. |
Format lists and platform statements are publisher documentation. They are useful for selecting a starting point, but they are not independent guarantees that every file will convert without layout, metadata, subtitle, color, or codec differences.

LibreOffice for office documents to PDF
When it is the sensible choice
LibreOffice is the clearest starting point when the source is an office document and the destination is PDF. Its official help documents PDF export parameters and includes Windows command-prompt examples, supporting a locally run workflow rather than a browser upload. That is especially useful for repeatable exports or scripts on a desktop machine.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
The documentation does not establish that LibreOffice will reproduce every proprietary document feature exactly, nor does it rank its output fidelity against Acrobat. Complex files can contain fonts, macros, linked objects, tracked changes, or application-specific layout rules that deserve a visual check after export.
Interactive export workflow
- Open the document in LibreOffice on the Windows PC or Mac where the source file is stored.
- Review page size, orientation, margins, print areas, visible comments, and the fonts used by the document.
- Choose the PDF export command in LibreOffice and inspect the export options rather than accepting a blind default.
- Export to a new filename so the editable source remains unchanged.
- Open the resulting PDF in a separate viewer and check representative pages, tables, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, and selectable text.
Command-line workflow
LibreOffice’s PDF help also documents command-line parameters and a Windows command-prompt example. A headless conversion is useful when you have a folder of documents or need a repeatable operation. Use the exact syntax and filter options shown in the current LibreOffice help for your installed release, then verify the generated files rather than assuming that a successful process means a correct layout.
Keep the source and destination directories separate when automating. That prevents an output PDF from being mistaken for a new input on a later run. Test one representative document first, especially if the folder contains several formats or documents created in different office applications.

Checks that matter for PDF export
- Fonts: a missing font can change line wrapping and page count.
- Page breaks: spreadsheets and long reports may paginate differently from the editing view.
- Images: inspect resolution, cropping, transparency, and rotation.
- Interactive elements: verify hyperlinks, bookmarks, comments, and form fields when they matter to the recipient.
- Privacy: inspect document properties and hidden metadata before distributing the PDF.
Adobe Acrobat for documented PDF-creation workflows
What Acrobat covers
Adobe documents PDF creation on both Windows and macOS from a supported set of inputs. Its format table includes Microsoft Office files, text, PostScript, images, HTML, and other document types. This makes Acrobat a PDF-focused option when the exact source format appears in Adobe’s supported list and the required companion application is installed.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Acrobat is not presented here as an all-purpose converter for images and video. Its documented workflows are about creating PDFs, and the cited pages do not establish a current price or a relative conversion-quality advantage.
Dependencies you must check
Supported input does not always mean self-contained input. Adobe’s supported-format documentation says Microsoft Office conversion requires the corresponding version of Microsoft Office. Other formats have their own originating-application or platform constraints. Before moving a workflow between a Windows PC and a Mac, check the row for the exact format in Adobe’s supported-format table.
Adobe’s conversion workflow guide is the appropriate reference for the current interface and for Windows- or macOS-specific steps. The documentation separately identifies Windows-only email conversion and Acrobat Pro workflows for AutoCAD, so do not assume that every route is available in every edition or operating system.

- Identify the exact source extension and confirm it appears in Adobe’s supported-format table.
- Confirm any required companion application, such as the corresponding Microsoft Office version, is installed on the same computer.
- Open Acrobat’s PDF-creation workflow and choose the source file.
- Review the conversion result for page geometry, fonts, images, links, and other features important to the document.
- Save the PDF under a new name and retain the original source for later edits.
If the source is not listed or the required companion application is unavailable, choose a tool that natively opens the source instead of treating Acrobat’s general PDF capability as proof of compatibility.

XnConvert for batch image conversion
Why batch processing changes the decision
XnConvert is designed for converting multiple images and applying operations in a batch. XnView’s product page lists Windows and macOS editions and names support for a broad range of common image and graphics formats. That combination is useful when the task is repetitive—such as converting a folder of camera images to a delivery format—rather than creating one PDF from a document.
A format appearing on a product page is not an independent test of round-trip fidelity. For images with transparency, color profiles, animation, layers, or unusual metadata, convert a small sample and inspect it before processing the entire archive.
Licensing boundary
XnView states that XnConvert is freeware for private or educational use and requires a license for commercial use. A business, agency, paid freelance project, or other revenue-generating workflow should check the current license terms and obtain the required permission before deployment. Do not infer commercial permission from the fact that the application can be downloaded without payment.
Batch-conversion workflow
- Install the Windows or macOS edition from the official XnConvert product page, and confirm that your intended use fits the license.
- Make a test copy of the source images. Do not use the only copy of an irreplaceable archive as the first batch.
- Add a representative sample containing the largest dimensions, transparency, different orientations, and any animated or layered files you expect to encounter.
- Choose the destination format and configure operations such as resize, rotate, crop, or other processing only when the workflow requires them.
- Set an output directory separate from the source and choose a naming pattern that will not overwrite originals.
- Run the sample batch, then inspect dimensions, color, transparency, metadata, and filenames.
- Process the full set only after the sample meets the delivery requirements.
Image decisions that affect the result
- Lossy versus lossless encoding: a smaller file can discard detail; preserve originals when future editing matters.
- Dimensions: resizing changes the number of pixels even when the file extension stays the same.
- Color: a profile conversion can alter appearance between applications and displays.
- Transparency and animation: the destination format may not support the source’s behavior.
- Metadata: decide whether camera data, location tags, copyright fields, and timestamps should remain.
HandBrake for video transcoding
What HandBrake does
HandBrake takes an existing video and creates a new version for playback on a phone, tablet, TV media player, game console, computer, or web browser. That is transcoding, not simple file renaming: the video and often the audio are decoded and re-encoded into a new output. The project’s quick-start documentation describes the purpose as making videos work on devices and software that support modern formats; that statement is vendor documentation, not an independent compatibility test.

Presets are starting points, not identical-output promises
HandBrake’s official presets are organized around compatibility. A preset may constrain resolution, frame rate, audio, or other settings to improve the likelihood that a target device will play the result. It can therefore change the output from the source. Read the settings after selecting a preset and adjust them only when you understand the target device’s requirements.
For example, preserving the source resolution may produce a larger file and require more decoding capability, while a device-oriented preset may reduce resolution or audio choices to improve compatibility. There is no documented basis here for claiming that one preset always gives the best quality or smallest file.
Operating-system and memory requirements
HandBrake’s requirements page is release-sensitive. At the time the documentation was accessed in 2026, it listed Windows 11 and macOS 14–15 and 26 as supported and marked Windows 10 as deprecated. Check the current requirements page immediately before installation because supported releases can change.
The same documentation recommends 16 GB of memory for transcoding standard- and high-definition video (480p, 576p, 720p, and 1080p) and 32 GB for 4K Ultra HD video (2160p). These are project recommendations, not benchmark results or a guarantee of a particular speed.
Video-transcoding workflow
- Install a HandBrake release whose requirements match your Windows or macOS version.
- Open the source video and wait for HandBrake to scan it. Confirm the detected title, duration, chapters, subtitles, and audio tracks.
- Choose an official preset that matches the playback device or browser target.
- Inspect the Summary, Dimensions, Video, Audio, and Subtitles settings. Pay particular attention to resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate or quality mode, audio tracks, and subtitle behavior.
- Choose a new output filename and a destination with enough free space; keep the original video untouched.
- Encode a short or representative test first, then play it on the actual target device or application.
- Queue additional jobs only after the test confirms compatibility and acceptable quality.
Common video trade-offs
- Resolution: lowering it can reduce file size and device workload but removes detail that cannot be recovered.
- Frame rate: changing it can affect motion smoothness and synchronization.
- Video codec and container: a newer codec may reduce size but be unsupported by an older player.
- Audio: changing codec, channel count, or bitrate can affect compatibility and sound quality.
- Subtitles and chapters: confirm whether they are burned in, passed through, or omitted.
Choosing between LibreOffice and Acrobat for PDF
| Question | LibreOffice | Adobe Acrobat |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Office-document export, including a documented command-line PDF route | PDF creation from the formats and workflows listed by Adobe |
| Windows/macOS evidence | Official help documents PDF export parameters and a Windows command-prompt example | Adobe documents PDF creation workflows for Windows and macOS |
| Input dependency | The cited help does not establish every proprietary-format or feature combination | Office files require the corresponding Microsoft Office version; other formats may require their originating application or a specific platform |
| What the documentation does not establish | A universal fidelity ranking or support for every input | Current price or superior conversion quality |
Use the application that can open the source with the fewest dependencies and whose output controls match the document’s needs. For a recurring office-export process, LibreOffice’s documented command-line parameters may be more useful than a manual PDF-creation workflow. For a source explicitly listed in Adobe’s table and dependent on an installed Office application, Acrobat’s documented route may be the more direct fit.
A practical selection checklist
- Name the source and destination exactly. “Document to PDF,” “PNG to JPEG,” and “4K video to phone-compatible MP4” are different requirements.
- Check the operating system. Confirm Windows or macOS availability and, for version-sensitive software, the current requirements page.
- Check dependencies. A supported input may still require Microsoft Office, an originating application, or a particular edition.
- Decide whether you need batching. XnConvert’s core value is batch image work; HandBrake’s queue is useful for repeated video jobs; a one-off PDF may not need automation.
- Define output controls. Documents need page and font fidelity; images need dimensions, color, transparency, and metadata decisions; video needs codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and subtitle choices.
- Confirm the license. XnConvert’s private/educational freeware statement does not grant commercial use. Check the current terms for any software used in paid work.
- Test a representative file. Include the hardest source, not only a simple example.
- Validate the result on the real destination. Open the PDF, inspect the image, or play the video on the device and application that matter.
Offline privacy and file-safety practices
Local processing can reduce the need to upload sensitive material, but safe handling still depends on your setup. Download installers from the publisher’s official site, keep the original files, and write outputs to a separate directory. If a conversion is interrupted, do not assume a partially written file is usable.
For confidential documents, review PDF metadata and hidden content before sharing. For photographs, decide whether location metadata should be retained. For video, check that unwanted audio or subtitle tracks were not carried into the output. These checks are independent of which converter you choose.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The application will not open the source
- Recheck the exact extension and whether the tool lists it as supported.
- Confirm that any required companion application or edition is installed.
- Try a copy of the file and test a simpler sample to distinguish a format issue from file corruption.
- For Acrobat, consult the specific row in Adobe’s supported-format table rather than relying on a general “create PDF” description.
The PDF layout changed
- Check fonts, page size, margins, orientation, and print areas on the source computer.
- Open the exported PDF in another viewer and inspect page breaks, tables, images, hyperlinks, and selectable text.
- For a complex proprietary file, compare the result with the originating application and consider whether the selected converter supports the document’s features.
The image batch has unexpected colors, sizes, or missing transparency
- Compare the destination format’s capabilities with the source’s color, alpha, animation, or layer features.
- Review resize and processing operations; a batch preset can change dimensions even when conversion was the original goal.
- Run a small representative sample before repeating the full batch.
The video will not play or looks different
- Reopen the HandBrake preset settings and compare codec, container, resolution, frame rate, audio, and subtitle choices with the target player.
- Test the output on the actual device, not only on the computer used for encoding.
- Check available memory and the current HandBrake requirements when working with HD or 4K sources.
