For most people, LM Studio is the best offline AI assistant to start with. It combines a desktop chat interface, downloadable local models, document chat, and a local OpenAI-compatible API. Once the model files are on your computer, its documentation says chat, document processing, and the local server can work without an internet connection.

Choose AnythingLLM if your priority is a collection of documents organized into workspaces. Choose Ollama if you are a developer who needs a local runtime that editors, scripts, or coding agents can call. Choose GPT4All for a simple local chat and document workflow. None is a universal winner: the right choice depends on your interface preference, document workflow, coding integrations, privacy requirements, and hardware.

What “offline AI” actually means

Offline does not usually mean the application never connects to the internet. You normally need a connection to download the application, model files, updates, and sometimes optional components. After those files are present, the model can generate responses on your computer.

LM Studio states that “Once you have an LLM onto your machine, the model will run locally and you should be good to go entirely offline.” Its documentation also says document processing is local and that files uploaded into LM Studio do not leave the application. Its local server exposes OpenAI-compatible requests while keeping inference on the machine.

For a strict offline requirement, download everything first, disconnect the computer, and repeat the exact workflow you intend to use. This catches hidden update checks, missing embedding models, and integrations that were still pointed at a cloud provider.

What remains local

  • The model weights used for generation.
  • Your prompts and generated responses during local inference.
  • Document chunks, embeddings, and indexes when you use a local RAG workflow.
  • Requests sent to a local API endpoint such as an Ollama or LM Studio server.

What can still require connectivity

  • Initial application and model downloads.
  • Model discovery, update checks, or extension downloads.
  • Any provider you deliberately configure to use a remote API.
  • Cloud-based editor, agent, or synchronization features connected to the local tool.

How local document analysis works

“Chat with a PDF” is generally a retrieval-augmented generation workflow, not a model memorizing the entire file in one step. The application extracts text, breaks it into passages, creates numerical embeddings for those passages, stores them in a vector index, and retrieves the passages that appear relevant to a question. The language model then writes an answer using the retrieved context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AnythingLLM explicitly describes a stack containing a local language model, an embedder that vectorizes text, and a vector database. GPT4All documents local embeddings for files. LM Studio provides local document chat. Ollama supplies the runtime, but a separate client or RAG layer is generally needed to ingest and retrieve documents.

Why retrieval quality matters

  • A scanned PDF may need text recognition before useful passages can be retrieved.
  • Tables, footnotes, columns, and complex layouts can be extracted imperfectly.
  • Questions that depend on a fact absent from the retrieved passages can produce an incomplete answer.
  • Changing the embedder or chunking settings changes which passages are found.

For important work, ask the assistant to quote or identify the relevant section, then check the original page. Local processing improves control over data location; it does not guarantee that every document is parsed correctly.

LM Studio: the best general starting point

LM Studio is the strongest default for a reader who wants one desktop application for writing, local document chat, and occasional API use. You download a compatible model, load it in the app, and interact through a graphical chat interface. The same installation can provide a local server using OpenAI-compatible requests, allowing compatible tools to send prompts without a cloud account.

Use it for writing

Drafting, rewriting, outlining, tone changes, and editing are the simplest LM Studio tasks. Keep a model loaded, provide the text you want changed, and state constraints such as audience, length, reading level, or required terminology. Because the model runs locally, drafts remain on the computer unless you copy them into another service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it for documents

Add a document through the application’s document-chat workflow, ask focused questions, and verify answers against the source. For a large collection, split work by subject or project so retrieved context stays relevant. The documented local processing means the source files and document analysis can remain inside the application.

Use it as a local API

Start LM Studio’s local server and point an OpenAI-compatible client at the local endpoint shown by the application. Keep the client configured for that local address and confirm that no remote provider is selected. This makes LM Studio a practical bridge between a graphical model manager and coding or automation tools.

AnythingLLM: best for document workspaces

AnythingLLM is the better fit when your central task is managing several document collections rather than opening one file occasionally. Its workspace approach lets you separate projects, attach relevant source material, and ask questions against the selected corpus.

Its local processing stack

The application can combine a local language model, an embedding model, and a vector database. Its built-in provider runs GGUF models through Lemonade/llama.cpp and documents paths using CPU, Vulkan, CUDA, Metal, and selected AMD NPU hardware. It can also connect to local or external providers, so check every provider setting before treating a workspace as offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the extra structure is worth it

  • You routinely ask questions across many files belonging to one project.
  • You need separate workspaces for clients, subjects, or confidential matters.
  • You want explicit control over the embedding and vector-store components.
  • You are comfortable checking several settings rather than relying on a single desktop chat screen.

The trade-off is complexity. More components mean more downloads, storage, and places where a configuration can be wrong. Test retrieval with a question whose answer you can locate in the source before relying on the workspace.

Ollama: best local runtime for developers

Ollama is primarily a local model runtime and API, not a finished writing application. Its quickstart documents commands for downloading and running models, along with an API that other programs can call. That makes it a strong foundation for editor extensions, scripts, test harnesses, and coding agents.

A practical developer workflow

  1. Install Ollama while connected and download a model that fits your machine.
  2. Run the model locally and confirm that a prompt returns before adding an editor or agent.
  3. Configure the client to use Ollama’s local API rather than a hosted endpoint.
  4. Limit the client’s file and shell permissions until you understand its behavior.
  5. Add a document or RAG layer only when your coding workflow needs repository or PDF retrieval.

Ollama’s documented examples include model downloads around 4.1GB and 4.5GB. Those figures are individual examples, not a complete library requirement; keeping several models, embeddings, and indexes can consume substantially more storage.

Why developers choose it

  • A local API can be reused by multiple tools.
  • Model selection is independent of the editor’s user interface.
  • Scripts can automate prompts, tests, and repeatable transformations.
  • The runtime can stay local while you change front ends.

If you want polished writing controls or built-in document ingestion, pair Ollama with a compatible desktop client or RAG application rather than expecting the runtime alone to provide those features.

GPT4All: straightforward local chat and documents

GPT4All is a sensible choice for readers who want a conventional local chat application with document support and optional server or SDK-oriented use. Its documentation describes local embeddings for files and an OpenAI-compatible server mode.

  • Experience the benefits of a PC Memory Upgrade with the ability to run more demanding applications simultaneously, and at faster speeds, for a better, smoother, computing experience
  • High performance DDR4 Laptop Memory designed for PC enthusiasts and gamers

  • DDR4 260 Pin Non-ECC SODIMM, Timing 22-22-22, CAS Latency of 22, 1.2 Volts

Model and storage example

GPT4All documents a 4.66GB Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct.Q4_0.gguf example. The file size is a useful planning reference, not a promise that every model will be the same size. Quantization, model family, and context settings change both storage and memory needs.

Best use cases

  • Local drafting and editing without assembling several services.
  • Questioning a modest set of files through its local document workflow.
  • Connecting another application through its OpenAI-compatible server.

Choose AnythingLLM instead when workspace organization and configurable retrieval are the main requirements. Choose Ollama instead when the runtime and API matter more than a ready-made desktop experience.

Hardware, memory, and storage planning

Local AI performance is constrained by model size, quantization, context length, CPU, GPU memory, and the extra resources used by embeddings and indexes. A larger parameter count is not automatically a better writing or coding choice if the model cannot fit comfortably in memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented baseline

AnythingLLM publishes a baseline of 16GB of RAM and an 8-core CPU. For Windows acceleration it recommends 8–12GB or more of GPU VRAM. These are the project’s recommended values, not a guarantee of a particular response speed or model capability.

Resource What it affects Planning guidance
RAM Model loading, context, embeddings, and multitasking 16GB is the documented AnythingLLM baseline; leave headroom for the operating system
CPU Inference when using CPU paths and document preprocessing AnythingLLM lists an 8-core CPU baseline
GPU VRAM Acceleration and how much of a model can be offloaded AnythingLLM recommends 8–12GB or more for Windows acceleration
Storage Models, embeddings, indexes, and source files Individual documented examples are 4.66GB in GPT4All and 4.1GB or 4.5GB in Ollama

Choosing a model size

  1. Check free storage before downloading. Keep room for more than one model if you plan to compare workflows.
  2. Check available RAM with your normal applications open, not only immediately after boot.
  3. Start with a quantized model that fits comfortably, then test the tasks you actually perform.
  4. Increase model size only if the smaller model fails a real requirement and your hardware can sustain it.

An external SSD can be useful for a growing model library and document collection, but moving files does not remove the need for sufficient RAM or VRAM during inference.

Setup checklist for a genuinely offline workflow

  1. Install while connected. Download the application, model files, embedding model, and any client or extension you plan to use.
  2. Record locations. Note where model weights, source documents, embeddings, and vector indexes are stored.
  3. Choose a local provider. In AnythingLLM or another front end, select the local model and local embedding path instead of an optional cloud provider.
  4. Run a known-answer test. Ask a question whose answer is plainly visible in a short document and compare the response with the source.
  5. Disable networking. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then repeat chat, document retrieval, and API calls.
  6. Check integrations. Ensure your editor, script, or agent points to the local endpoint and does not silently fall back to a hosted service.
  7. Define backups. Back up source documents and, if practical, indexes and configuration files to storage you control.

If a workflow stops working after disconnection, identify which component attempted to connect. The model may be local while an update check, embedding download, or client integration still expects the internet.

Using local assistants for coding safely

A local coding assistant can read files, explain code, generate patches, and call tools through an editor or agent. The runtime itself does not determine what the client is allowed to do. Treat permissions as a separate security decision.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with narrow permissions

  • Give the client access only to the repository or folder it needs.
  • Review generated changes before applying them.
  • Keep shell, network, and file-write permissions disabled until required.
  • Use a disposable branch or test directory for unfamiliar automation.
  • Confirm that package installation or command execution is not being delegated automatically.

Ollama is the natural starting runtime for this pattern. LM Studio is useful when you want the same local model available through a desktop interface and an OpenAI-compatible server. GPT4All can expose a compatible server as well, while AnythingLLM is better suited to codebases that must be queried as a managed document corpus.

Common failure modes and fixes

The model will not load

Check free RAM, GPU VRAM, and storage. Close other memory-heavy applications, select a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, and reduce context length if the client exposes that setting.

Responses are extremely slow

Determine whether the workload is running on CPU or using the intended GPU path. A model that technically loads may still be impractical if most layers are processed on the CPU. Test a smaller model before buying hardware.

The assistant cannot answer a document question

Verify that text was extracted, the document was actually indexed, and the question uses terms present in the source. Scans and complex layouts may require preprocessing. Ask for the relevant passage and inspect the original file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document answers cite the wrong section

Reduce the workspace to the relevant files, improve document separation, and test retrieval with smaller, focused questions. A vector search can return related language without returning the exact passage needed for a precise answer.

The “offline” app still tries to connect

Check update settings, model or embedding downloads, analytics options, and the provider selected by the front end. Disconnect networking and observe which step fails; then replace that dependency with a downloaded local component or leave the feature disabled.

The API client cannot connect

Confirm that the local server is running, use the exact local address and port shown by the application, and verify that the client expects an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Test with a minimal prompt before adding tools, retrieval, or an editor plugin.

Which one should you choose?

Pick LM Studio if

  • You want one graphical application for writing, chat, documents, and occasional coding integrations.
  • You need clearly documented local chat, RAG, and server behavior.
  • You prefer downloading and switching models through a desktop interface.

Pick AnythingLLM if

  • Your work revolves around multiple document collections and persistent workspaces.
  • You want a configurable local LLM, embedder, and vector database stack.
  • Your computer is close to the documented 16GB RAM, 8-core CPU, and optional 8–12GB-plus VRAM baseline.

Pick Ollama if

  • You are building an editor, script, or coding-agent workflow.
  • You want a reusable local runtime and API rather than a finished writing application.
  • You are comfortable adding a separate interface or RAG layer.

Pick GPT4All if

  • You want simple local chat and document features with minimal assembly.
  • You need local embeddings or an OpenAI-compatible server without adopting a larger workspace stack.
  • You value a straightforward desktop workflow over extensive configuration.

For a first installation, LM Studio offers the broadest path with the fewest decisions. Move to AnythingLLM when document workspaces become the limiting factor, to Ollama when developer integration becomes the priority, or to GPT4All when a simple local chat-and-files workflow is all you need.
