Choose between them—and add task lighting or controls—based on the ceiling, layout, visual tasks, glare risk, light distribution, and project requirements. Compare fixtures of the same type, review photometric data, and confirm local code before specifying or buying.
Which lights are useful starting points?
General lighting is intended to provide substantially uniform illuminance across an area; it does not replace special local lighting needs. A plan may combine ambient fixtures with task lighting at workstations or other visually demanding areas. The U.S. General Services Administration describes the role of general lighting in its lighting guidance.

| Lighting option | Where it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial LED troffer | General or ambient lighting where the ceiling and layout suit a troffer format | Fixture size, output, distribution, glare, controls compatibility, photometric fit, and efficacy compared with the same troffer type |
| Linear ambient LED luminaire | General or ambient lighting where a linear form and direct, indirect, or combined distribution suit the design | Output, distribution, direct/indirect balance, controls compatibility, photometric fit, and efficacy compared with similar products |
| Task lighting | Supplemental light for visually demanding work or a workstation where local adjustment is useful | Whether it lights the task without screen reflections, glare, or disruptive shadows |
| Occupancy, daylight, and dimming controls | Control strategies that may be paired with commercial LED luminaires | Compatibility with luminaires and building systems, user needs, commissioning, and applicable requirements |
These are categories, not universal product recommendations. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) advises buyers to compare efficacy only among like products and to avoid over-lighting. Its commercial and industrial LED luminaire guidance is a starting point for comparing products by type and application.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should you compare fixtures?
Do not select a light by a single efficiency figure. First establish the application and the fixture format that suits the ceiling and layout; then compare candidates using consistent criteria. A fixture that performs well in one category is not automatically a better choice for a different category or room.

- INSTALLATION OPTIONS: The LED ceiling light includes standard integral T-Bar clips for installation into T-Grid ceilings; Direct surface mount with the included DCMK 224 bracket; Slim profile accommodates tight plenums, making installation easy; 120 Volts
- DIMENSIONS AND MORE: Flat Panel LED Light has dimensions of 47-4/5" x 23-4/5" x 1-1/4"; Color temperature options - 3500K (Neutral)/4000K (Cool)/5000K (Daylight); Hard-wired 120V connection required (no plug); 5-year limited warranty
- Output and distribution: Check how much light the fixture provides and where it sends it. Review project-specific photometric information rather than assuming that similar-looking fixtures will light the room alike.
- Efficacy: Compare lumens per watt among products of the same type. FEMP’s federal purchasing criteria, in guidance updated June 2023, list minimum efficacy values of 131 lm/W for commercial linear ambient luminaires, 120 lm/W for 1 ft. × 4 ft. troffers, 123 lm/W for 2 ft. × 2 ft. troffers, and 140 lm/W for 2 ft. × 4 ft. troffers. These are federal procurement criteria in that guidance, not universal project specifications; check current criteria and the rules applicable to your purchase.
- Glare and visual comfort: Consider fixture shielding, distribution, workstation orientation, and whether indirect light or adjustable task lighting can help. A high-output fixture is not necessarily comfortable in every position.
- Color quality: Review the fixture’s color-quality information against the needs of the space and its visual tasks. The sources cited here do not establish a single color-quality target for every office or commercial use.
- Controls and maintenance: Verify compatibility with the intended dimming, occupancy, daylight, or building-control system, and account for installation and maintenance needs.
- Project fit: Confirm that ceiling conditions, fixture spacing, photometric performance, installation requirements, and the relevant local code work together.
How can a lighting plan limit glare and screen reflections?
Glare and reflections on screens are core office-design concerns, not minor finish details. The Swedish Work Environment Authority notes that “Glare can be just as big a problem as poor lighting.” Its office lighting guidance is one source on the issue; requirements and recommendations may vary by country.
- Consider fixture and workstation placement together, so lights are not positioned without regard to displays and lines of sight.
- Assess shielding and light distribution, and consider indirect light where it suits the room and task.
- Use task lighting where local adjustment is helpful, while checking that it does not introduce screen reflections, glare, or unwanted shadows.
- Include daylight and shading in the design rather than treating electric fixtures as the only source of light.
The Illuminating Engineering Society’s ANSI/IES RP-1-24, Recommended Practice: Lighting Office Spaces (2024) describes updates addressing glare mitigation, visual displays, control systems, and acoustic luminaires. ISO/CIE 8995-1:2025, Light and lighting — Lighting of work places — Part 1: Indoor, specifies indoor workplace lighting requirements for visual comfort, performance, and safety, using daylight, electric light, or both.

How should daylight and controls fit into the design?
Daylight, shading, and electric-light controls should be considered as part of one plan. Occupancy sensing, dimming, and task tuning may be compatible with commercial LED luminaires, but compatibility depends on the fixtures and control system selected. Confirm system requirements, expected user needs, and commissioning arrangements before specifying controls; the mere presence of a control feature does not establish that it will work with every luminaire or building system.
What should you verify before specifying or buying?
- Define the space and visual tasks. Identify the room layout, ceiling conditions, screen use, and any tasks needing local or specialized lighting.
- Choose a fixture category for the application. Decide whether troffers, linear ambient fixtures, or a combination fit the ceiling and layout; determine whether task lighting is also needed.
- Review product and photometric information. Compare output, distribution, efficacy among like products, glare performance, color-quality information, and controls compatibility.
- Coordinate daylight, shading, and controls. Confirm that the planned fixtures and control equipment work together and that the system can be commissioned for the space.
- Check jurisdiction and procurement requirements. Confirm the adopted code edition and applicable purchasing criteria with the authority having jurisdiction and a qualified lighting professional.
A retail search such as “commercial LED office troffer lights” can help identify product listings, but a listing is not a substitute for checking photometric data, installation requirements, controls compatibility, and code suitability.

Which standards and guidance apply?
Requirements depend on location and the code edition adopted for the project. The sources cited here include U.S. federal purchasing and facility guidance, IES office guidance, an international standard, and Swedish workplace guidance; they are not interchangeable legal requirements for every site.
For example, the GSA’s LED Lighting and Controls Guidance notes a September 2024 update and says that GSA’s 2024 P100 no longer allows Type B TLED because of potential incompatibility and safety hazards. That is federal guidance, not a universal ban. Check the applicable authority, adopted code, and procurement rules for the actual project.

Lighting is also a substantial electricity use in U.S. commercial buildings: the GSA attributes more than 30% of their total electricity consumption to lighting. The figure is specific to U.S. commercial buildings; the accessed GSA page does not state a publication year for it, so it should not be generalized to other regions or presented as a current global share.
