The most reliable starting point for a single-PC World of Warcraft stream is a hardware encoder (NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync), constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a frame rate and output size your computer and upload path can sustain. Use OBS Statistics during a private test; keep the profile only when rendering, encoding, and network counters remain stable in busy game scenes.
For Twitch, begin with the 1080p60 profile in the table below if your system has headroom. If WoW consumes most of the GPU or your connection cannot sustain the upload, move to 720p60 or 720p30 instead of tolerating dropped frames.

| Use case | Output resolution | Frame rate | Bitrate | Encoder | Rate control | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch, stable gaming PC and upload | 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 6,000 kbps | NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync | CBR | 2 seconds |
| More modest upload or less GPU headroom | 1280×720 | 60 fps | 4,500 kbps | NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync | CBR | 2 seconds |
| System or connection remains constrained | 1280×720 | 30 fps | Use a bitrate your connection can sustain; lower it if frames are dropped | Hardware encoder preferred | CBR | 2 seconds |
The 6,000-kbps 1080p60 and 4,500-kbps 720p60 figures are the named ProjectOBS Editorial Team figures for 2026. They are not a promise that every Twitch account, route, or computer will be stable at those settings.

Why World of Warcraft can make OBS lag
On a single computer, WoW and OBS compete for GPU time. The game renders frames, while OBS must capture the image, composite scenes, and send frames through an encoder. When the game leaves too little GPU headroom, OBS can miss its rendering deadlines even if the game itself appears smooth.
OBS’s NVENC guidance warns that when GPU utilization exceeds 95 percent, Windows may prioritize the game over other work, which can make the stream lag. A hardware encoder reduces CPU work, but it does not make a saturated GPU limitless. Your goal is a stable stream during raids, cities, combat effects, and other heavy scenes—not merely a clean result in an empty area.
Set up the profile in OBS
1. Choose the canvas, output size, and frame rate
- Open Settings in OBS and select Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the resolution at which you capture WoW. Keep it at your monitor or game-capture size unless you have a reason to scale the canvas.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 for the 1080p profile or 1280×720 for the fallback profile.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60. If rendering or encoding lag persists after the other fixes, select 30; OBS states that reducing frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work.
Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting guidance recommends using either 1920×1080 or 1280×720 at 60 fps for best performance with that feature. If your computer cannot hold 60 fps in WoW’s heaviest moments, a stable 30-fps stream is preferable to a nominal 60-fps stream that misses frames.

2. Configure streaming output
- In Settings, open Output and select the Streaming tab.
- Set Rate Control to CBR.
- Enter the bitrate for the profile you are testing: 6,000 kbps at 1080p60 or 4,500 kbps at 720p60. For 720p30, choose a lower value when your upload path cannot sustain the 720p60 setting.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds.
- Choose a hardware encoder when one is available: NVENC for a supported graphics card, AMD AMF for a supported AMD GPU, or Intel Quick Sync on compatible Intel hardware.
- Apply the settings and keep the other encoder options at their normal hardware-encoder defaults unless OBS or your platform specifically requires a change.
CBR keeps the outgoing stream within a predictable upload budget. A bitrate that looks acceptable in a speed test can still fail if other traffic, Wi-Fi interference, firewall software, or the selected ingest route reduces the upload available to OBS.

3. Give OBS and WoW enough headroom
- Launch WoW and identify the highest-load activity you normally stream, such as a raid encounter or crowded hub.
- Cap WoW’s frame rate to your monitor refresh rate or to the stream’s frame rate. A cap prevents the game from rendering unnecessary frames that consume GPU time.
- Enable V-Sync if it helps your setup maintain a predictable frame rate.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications, including browsers or video tools with hardware acceleration if they are competing for GPU resources.
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. This can help OBS receive scheduling priority when the game is using most of the GPU.
- Stream privately or record a short test while reproducing the heaviest WoW scene, then inspect OBS Statistics before changing anything else.
NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync, or x264?
| Encoder path | When it is the sensible first choice | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| NVENC | You have a supported NVIDIA GPU and want to move video encoding away from the CPU. | GPU utilization can still become the bottleneck; cap WoW FPS or lower the output load if utilization is near saturation. |
| AMD AMF | You have a supported AMD GPU and need hardware encoding for a gaming workload. | Monitor rendering and encoding counters rather than assuming the hardware path is automatically stable. |
| Intel Quick Sync | Your compatible Intel platform provides Quick Sync and the GPU or CPU arrangement leaves it available. | Verify stability in OBS Statistics during demanding scenes. |
| x264 | Your CPU has substantial unused headroom and you prefer CPU-based encoding. | Encoding work increases with resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A slower preset can create encoding lag; use a faster preset or reduce output load if frames miss deadlines. |
Hardware encoding is a strong gaming-PC default because it moves much of the video work off the CPU. It is not a substitute for monitoring utilization. If WoW drives the GPU close to full use, lower game settings, cap the frame rate, simplify OBS scenes, or reduce output resolution and frame rate.
Choose resolution and frame rate by constraint
When 1080p60 is appropriate
Use 1080p60 when OBS can render and encode every frame and your upload path remains steady at the selected bitrate. This profile gives a large, smooth image, but it also gives the encoder more pixels and frames to process. Test it in the busiest content you stream, not only in a quiet leveling area.
Why 720p60 is a useful fallback
At the same bitrate, 720p has fewer pixels than 1080p. That gives the encoder less information to represent and often improves stability and motion clarity when the higher-resolution profile is marginal. ProjectOBS’s named fallback is 1280×720 at 60 fps and 4,500 kbps.
When to use 720p30
Choose 720p30 when the computer or network still cannot hold 720p60. Halving the frame rate reduces the number of frames OBS must render and encode. The result is less fluid during rapid camera movement, but consistent delivery is more useful to viewers than a nominal frame rate accompanied by skipped frames.

Read OBS Statistics before changing settings
Open View → Stats in OBS while streaming or during a private test. Make one change at a time, reproduce the same demanding scene, and check the counters again. The type of loss determines the fix.
| Statistic or symptom | What it indicates | First actions |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering lag increases | OBS cannot composite scenes on time, usually because the GPU is under pressure. | Cap WoW FPS, close GPU-heavy programs, simplify scenes, run OBS as administrator on Windows, or lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Encoding lag increases | The selected encoder is not finishing frames before they are due. | Switch to NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync; if you must use x264, select a faster preset; lower output resolution or reduce FPS. |
| Dropped frames increase and the connection indicator is yellow or red | The network or ingest path cannot keep up with the selected bitrate, or traffic is being interfered with. | Try another ingest server, lower the bitrate, and check whether firewall or antivirus software is interfering. |
| No counters rise, but viewers report playback issues | The problem may be on the viewer’s side or at the platform rather than in your local OBS pipeline. | Compare the report with OBS’s rendering, encoding, and network counters before changing the profile. |
OBS Help describes an increasing Dropped Frames counter together with a yellow or red connection square as evidence that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. A faster GPU cannot repair an upload path that is losing network frames.
Fix rendering lag without sacrificing more quality than necessary
Start with the game frame-rate cap
An uncapped WoW frame rate can consume every available GPU cycle. Set a cap equal to the monitor refresh rate or stream frame rate and test again. If the rendering counter stops rising, the cap solved the scheduling conflict without requiring a lower stream resolution.

Lower the stream load only after the inexpensive fixes
If rendering lag continues, move from 1080p60 to 720p60. If that is still unstable, use 720p30. This sequence reduces pixel and frame work while preserving as much motion quality as the system can actually deliver.

Prefer a hardware path on a gaming PC
Switch from x264 to NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync when your hardware supports it. This is particularly useful when WoW already occupies a large share of CPU time, but verify the result in Statistics because a busy GPU can still cause rendering problems.
If x264 is required
Use a faster x264 preset when the encoder cannot finish frames. Faster processing usually trades some compression efficiency for timeliness. If the counter continues to rise, lower output resolution or frame rate; those changes reduce the amount of work regardless of encoder choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix dropped network frames
- Confirm the connection indicator and Dropped Frames counter in OBS Statistics while the problem occurs.
- Try a different Twitch ingest server. A poor route can fail even when another server is usable.
- Lower the bitrate from the profile you are testing and repeat the same scene.
- Check firewall and antivirus software for interference with OBS’s connection.
- Retest at the busiest time and with the same local network activity. Keep the lower profile if it is the first one that remains stable.
Do not respond to network drops by upgrading the GPU alone. Rendering and encoding are local performance problems; dropped network frames point to the upload path, ingest route, or software that is interrupting the connection.

A repeatable test method
- Save the starting profile as an OBS scene collection or settings note so you can return to it.
- Use the same WoW location, camera movement, overlays, and combat intensity for every test.
- Run a private stream or short recording long enough to reproduce the issue.
- Record the rendering-lag, encoding-lag, and dropped-frame counters before making a change.
- Change only one variable: game FPS cap, encoder, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or ingest server.
- Test again and keep the change only if the relevant counter improves without creating a different failure.
This method prevents a network problem from being misdiagnosed as an encoder problem and prevents a GPU scheduling problem from being “fixed” by unnecessarily lowering image quality.
Single-PC versus dual-PC streaming
The settings above target a single-PC setup. A dual-PC workflow can separate game rendering from OBS work, but it introduces additional hardware and signal-routing complexity. A capture card belongs in that workflow; it is not a first fix for a single-PC stream whose actual problem is an uncapped WoW frame rate, saturated GPU, or unstable upload path.
Even with separate computers, the streaming PC still needs a suitable encoder and a stable connection. Use OBS Statistics on the streaming PC to distinguish local rendering or encoding loss from network loss.

Quick Recap
Practical decision order
- Start with a supported hardware encoder, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the profile that matches your available headroom.
- Cap WoW’s frame rate and leave GPU capacity for OBS.
- Use OBS Statistics to identify rendering, encoding, or network loss.
- For rendering loss, reduce GPU competition; for encoding loss, change encoder or processing load; for network loss, change ingest server or bitrate.
- Keep 1080p60 only when the entire pipeline remains stable in the heaviest scenes you stream.
