For a prerecorded church service, start with OBS using H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps, and 1080p30 only if the recording, computer, and sustained upload connection can handle it. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 8 Mbps for 720p30, and advises leaving 20% upload headroom. These are starting points, not a universal preset: test the whole setup before the service.
Recommended OBS settings for a prerecorded service
In OBS, configure the streaming output for YouTube and match the output to the source recording and the capacity of your computer and internet connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and supported H.264, H.265, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS. For a broadly compatible starting profile, use H.264 and RTMPS when your OBS workflow supports it.

OBS’s exact labels and available encoder choices can vary by operating system, hardware, and version. Set the streaming profile in OBS’s output settings, and confirm the selected encoder is available on the computer. Choose a bitrate that fits the connection
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations distinguish minimum bitrates from recommended bitrates. A minimum is not a guarantee of a stable stream, and the figures do not say what upload capacity your church has. YouTube also recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth available as headroom.

These values are YouTube Help recommendations on the current encoder-settings page retrieved in 2026. Check the bitrate table there for other resolutions or frame rates rather than extrapolating from these two entries. To preserve YouTube’s suggested headroom, available sustained upload capacity should exceed the stream’s bitrate; allow room for other network use and fluctuations as well. A speed test taken once does not establish what the connection will sustain during the service.
Resolution is not automatically better just because it is higher. Consider the source recording’s resolution and detail, the amount of motion, encoder load, and stable upload capacity. A static pulpit shot, slides with small text, and footage with frequent movement can behave differently. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps, so test any higher frame rate in advance. If the upload or system struggles, reduce output resolution or bitrate and test again rather than keeping an unstable 1080p profile. YouTube streaming tips

Prepare YouTube and OBS for the scheduled stream
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, then get the stream URL and key shown for the event. The key lets the encoder send video to the channel; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
- Set OBS to the event’s YouTube connection. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Use RTMPS if the workflow supports it, then set the video and audio output profile you intend to test.
- Load the service recording as the program source. Add the recorded service as an OBS media source or otherwise prepare the complete program feed. Watch and listen to it inside OBS. Confirm the intended audio is present and that desktop or microphone audio is not being mixed in unexpectedly. OBS media-source controls and exact looping or playlist steps are not established here, so verify the behavior in your installed OBS version instead of assuming a loop will run as intended.
- Test the complete path before the service. Use footage with similar motion and audio, start sending from OBS, and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview before the scheduled start. Check picture, sound, and stream health. The YouTube preview and encoder test should include the same connection, audio routing, and recording options you plan to use.
- Start and monitor the event. Start the scheduled event according to its YouTube auto-start and auto-stop settings. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and watch OBS and YouTube stream health throughout. A wired Ethernet connection can be considered if the computer can reach the router, but it will not correct every network fault.
- End the event and verify any local copy. Follow the event controls for ending the stream, then stop sending from OBS as appropriate. If you made a local recording, check that it plays correctly.
YouTube’s guidance warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Test before the event and monitor during it, rather than assuming an encoder setting alone can protect a service from network interruptions. YouTube encoder workflow

If you want a local copy as well as the YouTube stream, OBS Advanced output can configure streaming and recording independently. A separate high-quality recording profile can demand more from the computer, so test streaming and recording together before using both for a service.

OBS recommends MKV for recording because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file. If you need MP4 afterward, use OBS’s remuxing function to convert the recording container. Lossless recording is generally excessive for a routine service archive: OBS Project’s recording-preset guide gave an approximate 7 GB per minute for its lossless preset in 2023. That figure is specific to that preset, not a general file-size estimate for ordinary recordings.

Plan for stream duration, archives, and viewer controls
“Continuously” can mean one scheduled Sunday service or a channel that runs around the clock. Those are different operating needs. OBS and YouTube’s event workflow can support sending a prepared program feed, but the settings above do not establish unattended 24/7 operation, automatic repetition, or archive continuity for every church’s setup. Decide whether you need one event, repeated programming, or a persistent channel before choosing the operating method.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a session longer than that will appear as one complete archive; if viewers need a replay, plan a separate recording and verify it. DVR is a separate YouTube live setting: when enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live stream. It does not change encoder quality. YouTube live settings

Common problems and what to check
- Stream health is unstable or frames are dropped: Check sustained upload capacity and competing network use. YouTube advises 20% headroom; reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen output, then test again.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Confirm the event’s stream URL and key match the OBS configuration. Treat a key as a password, and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
- Audio is missing, too quiet, or doubled: Check the media source’s audio in OBS, verify the intended output is audible in the preview, and ensure desktop or microphone audio has not been added unintentionally. Test with the actual service recording.
- Video looks poor despite using a higher resolution: Compare the source recording’s detail and motion with the selected output, then check bitrate and encoder load. A higher output setting cannot restore detail that is absent from the recording or compensate for an unstable connection.
- The recording file is damaged after an abrupt stop: Record to MKV; OBS recommends it because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the whole file. Remux to MP4 afterward if needed.
- The archive is incomplete or absent after a long session: Check the event duration and archive expectations. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Before rebroadcasting a recorded service, confirm that your church has the necessary rights for every song, performance, video, slide, and other material in it. Having a recording does not by itself establish permission to stream it. YouTube’s copyright and channel policies can affect a live stream and its availability; review the requirements for your own content and permissions before scheduling.
