For a weak computer, begin with a hardware encoder (NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD VCE), 1280×720 output at 30 fps, the monitor’s native Base (Canvas) Resolution, and a simple scene. Record a representative clip, inspect OBS Stats, then change one setting at a time. If the recording remains stable, test 720p60 and 1080p30 separately; keep the profile with consistent frame pacing in your actual workload.

Recommended starting profile

These settings are a conservative baseline, not a guarantee. OBS states that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so two computers with similar specifications can behave differently. A browser-heavy scene and an idle desktop do not place the same load on the system.

OBS setting Starting choice Why it is the first choice on a weak PC
Encoder Available hardware encoder: NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or AMD VCE Moves encoding work away from the CPU when supported. OBS recommends hardware encoding for recording when it is available.
Base (Canvas) Resolution Source or monitor resolution Keeps captured sources aligned with the screen and avoids unnecessary repositioning and resizing.
Output (Scaled) Resolution 1280×720 Reduces the number of pixels OBS must render and encode while preserving a conventional 16:9 image.
Common FPS Values 30 OBS identifies 60 fps as substantially more taxing than 30 fps; 30 fps is the safer fallback when frames are lost.
Scene One display or window capture with only essential sources Every browser source, animated overlay, filter, and high-resolution webcam adds rendering work.

Use this profile for a short local recording before changing anything else. The goal is not the highest nominal resolution; it is a clip with stable frame pacing, no visible stutter, and enough clarity for the intended use.

Set the canvas and output resolution correctly

Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at the source size

Open Settings > Video and normally leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at the resolution of the monitor or source you are capturing. For example, a 1920×1080 desktop can remain a 1920×1080 canvas even when the final recording is 1280×720.

The canvas is the workspace in which OBS positions sources. Lowering it can force you to reposition and resize display captures, windows, webcams, and overlays. OBS reserves that change for systems that are severely starved for GPU resources, not as the routine first step for a slow recording.

Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution first

In the same Settings > Video panel, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This lets the canvas match the source while reducing the image OBS ultimately renders and encodes.

Lowering output resolution first also makes troubleshooting easier: your scene coordinates remain consistent, and you can restore a higher output without rebuilding the scene. If 1280×720 still produces rendering or encoding lag, test a lower output resolution available in your installation rather than immediately shrinking the canvas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When changing the canvas is justified

If OBS cannot render even a minimal scene after you have reduced output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, the GPU may be too resource-starved to maintain the original canvas. At that point, lower Base (Canvas) Resolution and inspect every source again. Expect to resize or reposition sources because their coordinates are based on the canvas.

Choose 30 fps before trying 60 fps

Why 30 fps is the safe baseline

A 60-fps recording contains twice as many frames as a 30-fps recording over the same period. OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be very taxing compared with 30 fps, and its troubleshooting guidance recommends dropping from 60 to 30 when 60 is not working. The same workload difference matters when recording locally because OBS still has to render and encode each frame.

At 30 fps, cursor movement and game motion can look less fluid than at 60 fps, but a stable 30-fps file is generally more useful than a nominal 60-fps file with duplicated, delayed, or missing frames.

How to test 60 fps safely

  1. Record the exact scene and activity that you plan to publish, using 1280×720 output at 30 fps.
  2. Open Settings > Video and change Common FPS Values to 60.
  3. Record another short clip while reproducing the same workload: move through the same application, game area, or demonstration.
  4. Open View > Docks > Stats during the test and compare rendering lag, encoding lag, and skipped or missed frames.
  5. Keep 60 fps only if frame pacing remains stable and the extra smoothness is worth the additional GPU or CPU load.

Do not judge the profile from an idle desktop if your real recording contains a game, animated browser page, webcam processing, or several windows. The representative workload is the meaningful test.

Use hardware encoding when OBS offers it

NVENC, Quick Sync, and AMD VCE

In Settings > Output, select a hardware encoder when one is available. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD VCE as hardware-encoding options. The exact label depends on the graphics hardware and driver installed in the computer.

Hardware encoding can reduce CPU pressure, but it does not make every scene free. OBS still has to capture the source, render the scene, apply filters, composite overlays, and write the file. A weak GPU can also become the limiting component if the scene is complex or the captured application is already using most of its graphics resources.

If no hardware encoder appears

Select x264 and choose a faster preset in the recording output settings. Faster x264 presets generally reduce CPU work by accepting a quality or file-size trade-off. If encoding lag continues, lower output resolution or frame rate before adding visual elements back to the scene.

Do not assume that a compatible encoder guarantees smooth recording. OBS’s system guidance explicitly notes that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully; the configured resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify that the encoder is actually helping

  • Record the same scene with the hardware encoder and with x264, if both are available.
  • Compare OBS Stats rather than relying only on the computer’s general CPU percentage.
  • Check whether encoding lag falls while rendering lag remains unchanged. That pattern means the encoder helped but the scene or GPU still needs attention.
  • Watch the resulting files for dropped-looking motion, audio drift, or playback problems in the editor or player you intend to use.

Build a scene that a weak PC can render

Start with one capture source

Create the simplest scene that satisfies the recording: a display capture or window capture, plus only the audio and camera sources you actually need. Every additional source is part of the rendering workload, even when it appears visually small.

Remove expensive browser sources and animations

Browser sources can execute web content, refresh remote assets, animate, and consume GPU resources. Animated overlays are particularly costly because OBS must redraw them repeatedly. Disable them during troubleshooting, then add them back one at a time if the recording remains stable.

Limit filters and webcam resolution

Filters add processing to a source. Temporarily remove unnecessary color adjustments, blur, chroma-key effects, and other filters while diagnosing lag. A high-resolution webcam feed can also increase rendering work; use the lowest camera resolution that still meets your presentation needs.

Close applications you are not recording

Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, synchronisation tools, and background applications before recording. They compete for CPU time, GPU memory, and disk bandwidth. Leave only the tools required for the demonstration and the applications needed to monitor the recording.

Keep free space on the recording drive

Record to a drive with adequate free space. A nearly full or heavily contended drive can make file writing unreliable even when OBS’s rendering and encoding counters look healthy. If possible, avoid recording to a drive that is simultaneously handling large downloads, game installations, or video exports.

Read OBS Stats instead of guessing

Open the Stats dock from View > Docks > Stats while recording a representative scene. The counters help identify which part of the pipeline is failing.

What you see What it usually indicates First change to test
Rendering lag OBS cannot render the scene fast enough, often because the GPU is overloaded by the captured application or scene sources. Remove browser sources, animations, filters, and extra captures; then lower output resolution.
Encoding lag The selected encoder cannot process frames quickly enough for the configured resolution and frame rate. Choose a hardware encoder, if available; otherwise use a faster x264 preset, then reduce output resolution or fps.
Skipped or missed frames Frames are not being delivered through the recording pipeline consistently. Use the same sequence: lower output resolution, change 60 fps to 30, simplify the scene, and retest.

Make one change per test and record a short clip after each change. This makes cause and effect visible and gives you comparable files. There is no universal benchmark or percentage improvement that applies to every PC, encoder, and scene.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Reproduce the problem. Record the scene that actually lags instead of testing an empty scene.
  2. Open Stats. Note rendering lag, encoding lag, and skipped or missed frames during the clip.
  3. Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged for this test.
  4. Drop 60 fps to 30 fps. Re-record the same activity and compare frame pacing.
  5. Choose hardware encoding. In Settings > Output, select NVENC, Quick Sync, or AMD VCE when offered.
  6. Use a faster x264 preset if hardware encoding is unavailable. Accept that faster CPU encoding can change quality or file size.
  7. Simplify the scene. Remove browser sources, animated overlays, extra captures, high-resolution webcam feeds, and nonessential filters.
  8. Close background applications. Free CPU, GPU, memory, and disk resources before recording again.
  9. Change Base (Canvas) Resolution only as a last resort. If the system remains GPU-starved, lower it and rebuild source positioning as needed.
  10. Keep the stable profile. Restore one feature at a time only when the recording remains smooth under the real workload.

Compare the profiles that are most likely to work

The table below describes practical test profiles. It does not claim that one profile wins on every computer; OBS performance varies with hardware, drivers, source content, and scene design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Profile Output Frame rate Encoder Expected trade-off Use it when
Conservative baseline 1280×720 30 fps Hardware encoder Lowest workload among the recommended profiles; motion is less fluid than 60 fps. The PC is weak or the current cause of lag is unknown.
Smoother 720p 1280×720 60 fps Hardware encoder Smoother motion, with substantially more rendering and encoding work than 30 fps. 720p30 is stable and the workload has enough headroom.
Sharper 30-fps output 1920×1080 or another source-appropriate output 30 fps Hardware encoder More detail, but more pixels to render and encode than 720p30. 720p30 is stable and clarity matters more than fluid motion.
CPU fallback Start at 1280×720 30 fps x264 with a faster preset Works without a hardware encoder, but trades CPU load against quality or file size. No supported NVENC, Quick Sync, or AMD VCE option is available.

Test 720p60 and 1080p30 separately rather than assuming that one is easier. A 1080p30 profile processes more pixels; a 720p60 profile processes more frames. The winning choice is the one that keeps Stats counters quiet and produces a file your editor or player handles correctly.

Recording versus streaming: do not mix the symptoms

For a local recording, inspect rendering and encoding performance and verify the saved file. For streaming, OBS also reports dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A rising dropped-frame counter in a stream points to network capacity or stream configuration, not necessarily to local recording performance.

OBS recommends using the Simple output presets and an available hardware encoder for recording users who are troubleshooting. The same interface can serve both workflows, but network drops and local encoding lag are different failure modes and require different fixes.

What a capture card can and cannot fix

A USB HDMI capture card is relevant when you are recording a console, camera, or second computer. OBS lists capture cards among supported source types, and the device can send an external HDMI signal into OBS as a source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a universal fix for recording the same weak PC’s display. If the computer is rendering the game and OBS on the same system, moving an external signal is a different workflow. A capture card does not automatically solve an overloaded scene, an overworked encoder, insufficient disk space, or background applications consuming resources.

How to decide whether a recording is genuinely smooth

  • Check frame pacing: motion should advance evenly rather than pausing and then jumping.
  • Inspect Stats during the workload: do not rely on an idle test scene.
  • Watch the complete file: a preview can look acceptable while the saved recording has stutters or audio problems.
  • Check clarity during motion: a higher resolution is not automatically better if the image breaks up during movement.
  • Check file size and storage: choose a profile your drive can write reliably and your editor or player can open.
  • Check compatibility: the practical winner must work with the intended editor and playback software.

Compare smoothness, clarity during motion, file size, CPU and GPU utilisation, and compatibility together. Optimising only one of these can create a worse result overall.

Common mistakes on low-end systems

Starting at 1080p60 because it looks best on paper

1080p60 combines a high pixel count with the heavier 60-fps workload. Begin at 720p30, then test one upgrade at a time so you know which change causes instability.

Lowering the canvas before the output

Changing Base (Canvas) Resolution first can make every source the wrong size or position. Lower Output (Scaled) Resolution first and reserve canvas changes for severe GPU starvation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding overlays before confirming the baseline

Animated browser elements, multiple captures, filters, and webcam processing can hide the effect of the encoder choice. Establish a stable, minimal scene before adding presentation features.

Treating nominal specifications as proof

A computer can meet OBS’s compatibility requirements and still fail with a particular encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene. Real workload testing is necessary because there is no single preset that guarantees smooth recording on every compatible PC.

Changing several settings at once

If you change resolution, fps, encoder, and scene sources together, you cannot identify the cause of an improvement or a new problem. Record a short comparable clip after each adjustment.

Final decision framework

Keep 720p30 with hardware encoding if it is stable and the recording is clear enough for the audience. Move to 720p60 when motion smoothness is important and Stats remains clean. Choose 1080p30 when additional detail matters more than fluidity and the system can render the larger output. If no hardware encoder exists, use a faster x264 preset and reduce the workload until encoding lag stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best OBS settings for a weak PC are therefore a tested combination, not a magic preset: hardware encoding where supported, 30 fps as the fallback, output scaling before canvas changes, and a scene simple enough for the computer to render consistently.
