Best OBS Settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, set OBS to output 3840×2160 at 60fps, use CBR, set a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose the video bitrate for your codec: YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Those settings are a starting point, not a guarantee: your source, encoder, computer, and upload connection all need to sustain them.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps

OBS setting Recommended starting point
Output resolution 3840×2160
Frame rate 60 fps
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds
Video bitrate H.264: 50 Mbps recommended, 14 Mbps minimum. H.265/HEVC or AV1: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube’s 4K/2160p 60fps figures.
Protocol RTMPS
Audio AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit
HDR color HEVC and 10-bit; YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations are on its live encoder settings and bitrate guide. The recommended bitrate is outgoing video bitrate; allow additional upload capacity for audio and normal connection variation. A speed-test result alone does not guarantee a stable stream.

Set resolution and frame rate in OBS

  1. Open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Value to 60, provided the source and system can sustain them.
  3. Choose Base (Canvas) Resolution for the workspace in which you arrange sources. The canvas is not necessarily the resolution sent to YouTube; Output (Scaled) Resolution determines the stream output. Keep the canvas matched to your normal game or production canvas, and scale the output only when needed. See the OBS Studio overview.

Set the encoder, bitrate, and keyframes

  1. Open Settings → Output. If you need direct control over codec and rate control, change Output Mode to Advanced, then select the Streaming tab.
  2. Choose an encoder and codec supported by both your OBS installation or hardware and YouTube ingest. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Do not choose HEVC or AV1 just for the lower bitrate recommendation unless your encoder and stream path support it.
  3. Set Rate Control to CBR, Keyframe Interval to 2 s, and the video bitrate to the codec-specific recommended value in the table. YouTube specifies a 4-second maximum keyframe interval.
  4. Use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP. In OBS, select the YouTube service and use the stream key from the matching YouTube Live control-room stream setup. Treat the key like a password; do not show it in a screen share or recording.

For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and gives 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 Kbps in its advanced guidance. Choose a supported audio configuration appropriate to the production and confirm the current ingest guidance for your workflow.

Choose the right codec and color workflow

H.264

H.264’s YouTube recommendation for 4K60 is 50 Mbps, with a listed minimum of 14 Mbps. It is a practical option when it is the compatible encoder and ingest path for your setup; a lower bitrate recommendation for another codec is not by itself a reason to switch.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

H.265/HEVC or AV1

YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for 4K60 with H.265/HEVC or AV1, with a listed minimum of 10 Mbps. Confirm that the selected encoder, OBS installation, and YouTube ingest path all support the codec before relying on it.

SDR and HDR

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its guidance recommends HEVC and 10-bit and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. HDR ingest has additional requirements, so do not apply the SDR values to an HDR stream without checking YouTube’s full current encoder guidance.

Check whether your setup can sustain 4K60

  • Source: The game, camera, or other production needs to provide the detail and frame rate you intend to send. Upscaling a lower-resolution source does not create additional source detail.
  • Encoder and computer: Encoding at 4K60 can be demanding. OBS notes that hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to specialized GPU components, but compatibility and quality depend on the hardware and generation; there is no universally best encoder or preset. See OBS guidance on hardware encoding.
  • Upload connection: Sustain the video bitrate plus audio and headroom for variation. The cited platform guidance does not establish one minimum upload speed that works for every connection.
  • Representative test: Run the actual scene, encoder, and connection before the event, then check YouTube stream health. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

4K streams are set to normal latency; YouTube says its “improve for low latency” option is unavailable for 4K/2160.

When to use 4K30 or 1080p60 instead

Use 4K60 only if the full setup holds it reliably. If encoding overloads, frames become choppy, or the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again. OBS recommends lowering output resolution or trying 30fps when system capacity is insufficient; a stable lower target is preferable to an unstable 4K60 stream. The right trade-off depends on whether fine image detail or smooth motion matters more for your content.

Troubleshoot a lagging or unstable 4K stream

OBS reports encoding overload or motion looks choppy

The encoder may not be keeping up with the scene at 4K60. Reduce the output resolution or frame rate, then test the same scene again. If trying a hardware encoder, check that it is supported by your platform and hardware; OBS notes that encoder generations can differ in quality at the same bitrate. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

YouTube reports connection or ingest problems

Check the selected codec and protocol against YouTube’s supported ingest guidance, verify the stream key for the active stream, and confirm that the connection can sustain the chosen video bitrate plus audio. Test at a lower bitrate or output target to isolate whether the connection is the limiting factor.

The stream looks soft despite a 4K output setting

Check the source resolution and frame rate as well as the OBS canvas and output settings. The output setting controls what OBS sends; it cannot restore detail absent from the source.

Do you need a capture card?

Only if your workflow needs to bring an external HDMI camera or console into the production. YouTube supports encoder workflows using external video hardware, but not every setup needs a capture card, and compatibility depends on the source output, computer interface, capture format, operating system, and any passthrough requirement.
