Best OBS Scene Layout for a 24/7 Indian Radio-Style YouTube Stream

For a 24/7 radio-style YouTube stream, use a small OBS Scene Collection with one calm, legible “On Air” scene: station artwork, the station or programme name, optional reliable track information, and only the audio sources the broadcast needs. Keep a separate fallback scene for interruptions or maintenance. OBS does not prescribe a radio template, so this is a practical recommendation—not a tested or official layout.

Build a small scene collection

OBS scenes and sources define what appears and plays in the stream. A Scene Collection groups scenes; a Profile stores stream, video and output settings. Keep the radio layout in a focused collection and use a Profile for its YouTube output configuration rather than mixing unrelated show setups together. See the OBS Studio Overview and OBS Profiles.

Main / On Air

  • Use a station image, logo or restrained visualizer as the main visual.
  • Show the station or programme name clearly. Keep text large and uncluttered enough to read on phones and televisions.
  • Add current-track text only if a dependable metadata source keeps it accurate. If metadata is unavailable or unreliable, omit it rather than showing stale information.
  • Add only the audio sources needed for the broadcast, and check their routing and levels before going live.

Fallback / Maintenance

Make a simple card such as “Technical issue” or “Back shortly,” and decide in advance what audio should do during an interruption. This scene gives the operator a deliberate response; it is not a substitute for monitoring the stream.

Opening or schedule scene (optional)

Add one only if scheduled programming or a handoff makes it useful. A genuinely continuous programme can stay on the main scene without a separate opening or ending.

Keep the visuals readable without adding needless load

OBS notes that sources consume resources, including some that are hidden. Browser sources, filters and large media can add load. For a largely static radio screen, prefer appropriately sized artwork and a static image source for static overlays; avoid multiple animated browser overlays unless they serve a clear purpose. OBS also suggests reducing browser-source dimensions and keeping scene collections focused. These are sensible ways to limit complexity, not a guaranteed performance improvement for a particular computer. See the OBS encoding performance guide.

Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the work area in which you arrange sources, and Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to send to YouTube. Choose resolution and frame rate for the artwork or motion, audience needs, encoder capacity and YouTube’s current recommendations. A static radio visual does not by itself require a high frame rate; OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. There is no universally best bitrate, resolution, encoder or hardware configuration for every system and connection.

Prepare the YouTube stream and test the whole scene

  1. Confirm live-stream access. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup requirements for the channel. YouTube Help states a channel must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; check the current account status rather than assuming eligibility.
  2. Set up the YouTube stream destination in OBS. Use the channel’s YouTube stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not display it in a scene, share it publicly or leave it in a recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  3. Configure video and output settings. Set the canvas and output resolutions and frame rate to suit the scene and system. Set the encoder and bitrate based on the computer’s capacity and the available upload connection; consult YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen output rather than copying a universal value.
  4. Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate requirement. Use a stable connection and verify actual performance; a speed-test result alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  5. Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the correct scene and sources are visible, and listen for the intended audio. Test the fallback scene and transitions, then test what happens after a source or network interruption. OBS recommends a test stream or recording in its Quick Start Guide.
  6. Monitor during the broadcast. Check audio and video quality, channel/watch-page access and mobile playback. If keeping a local recording, verify that the file is actually growing. These checks reduce the chance of an unnoticed fault but are not an uptime guarantee.

Plan recording separately from a 24/7 broadcast

A continuous stream is not the same thing as a dependable archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance does not promise that every shorter stream will be archived in every circumstance. If you need recordings, plan local recording, storage and file checks independently of YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Clear music and visuals before launch

Do not treat a “free” label, a track credit or a radio-style format as proof that music is cleared. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to hold necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including relevant music licensing rights and territory requirements. Its copyright guidance says live broadcasts are scanned for third-party content; if identified material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube describes music as safe when it is public domain or the creator has permission from the copyright owner. Confirm the actual license and that it covers the intended live broadcast, territories and any archive or replay. For an India-targeted broadcast, the cited YouTube guidance does not supply a complete India-specific rights checklist; confirm permissions for the particular tracks and uses with the relevant rights holders. See YouTube’s tips for finding safe music.

Common problems and practical checks

  • The preview is blank or shows the wrong content: confirm the intended scene is active and its sources are visible and correctly arranged. OBS sources can consume resources even when hidden, so remove or disable sources that are not needed.
  • Audio is missing, doubled or unexpectedly quiet: check that the required audio source is present, routed once, and producing sound in OBS’s meters; listen to the YouTube preview before starting the long broadcast.
  • The stream drops or quality degrades: check the connection and bitrate against available upload capacity, retain YouTube’s recommended headroom, and review OBS’s performance guidance for costly sources, filters or media. A complex visual is not worth compromising a stable broadcast.
  • Music triggers a copyright interruption: pause or replace the material and resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner. If you have permission, confirm it covers the use and that any necessary Content ID allowlisting is in place; possession of a license alone may not prevent an interruption.
  • The stream ends but there is no complete YouTube archive: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a separate local recording and retention plan if the archive matters.
