For one video, OBS’s built-in Media Source with Loop enabled is simpler. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. These settings repeat media in your scene—the separate encoder setup sends that scene to YouTube Live.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS documents VLC Video for playlist playback and Media Source for looping a single media file in its Media Sources guide. The optional plugin is listed in the OBS forum resource listing.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. The VLC Video source is available only when VLC is installed. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, choose the scene you will use, then in the Sources dock select + and add VLC Video. Add or select your devotional files in the playlist order you want.
- Check looping. Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback returns to the beginning after the final item. Use shuffle only if you want playback order to vary.
- Fit the source to your scene. Size and position the video for your output. OBS renders sources higher in the Sources list above sources lower in the list. Put a title, lyrics, or logo above the video only if you want that layer visible over it.
- Save and test the scene. Play through the end of a short test playlist, confirm the next item starts, and check that audio and any overlays behave as intended before scheduling a public stream.
For a single video, add Media Source instead and enable its Loop setting. You do not need a separate playlist tool for one file. See the OBS Sources Guide for source layering behavior.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s platform-wide guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio because eligibility and restrictions can be channel-specific. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the connection details into OBS. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup and enter them in OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your event. Do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the event public. Confirm the correct scene, playlist, audio, title, and privacy setting.
- End and archive deliberately. Stopping the encoder ends the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm archive and privacy settings for the specific event in Live Control Room.
Encoder settings and connection checks
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists CBR, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe frequency (not over four seconds). It recommends RTMPS. These are compatibility settings, not a reason to choose the highest possible resolution regardless of your upload connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for settings matched to your output.

- Choose bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and real upload capacity. The right value depends on all three; do not use a bitrate recommendation detached from the output you intend to send.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Other household or office traffic can reduce available capacity, so test under realistic conditions and monitor stream health.
- Allow setup time. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Test representative content. Check a segment with typical motion and audio, not just a static frame, and confirm playback remains smooth through a playlist transition.

Copyright and monetization for devotional streams
A devotional subject does not automatically make a song, recording, performance, or video free to rebroadcast. Use material for which your channel has the necessary rights to the video, recording, composition, performance, and other applicable elements. This is not India-specific legal advice; rights depend on the material and circumstances.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It may replace the picture, issue a warning, interrupt, or terminate a stream. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume that running a stream for longer makes it eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and says generic or repetitive material may be considered inauthentic; the substance of each video should be materially varied and offer creative, educational, or other value. Troubleshooting common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS if needed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after the last video: Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file in Media Source, enable Loop instead.
- The wrong item plays next: Review the playlist order and remove or reorder entries as needed. Turn off shuffle if you need a fixed sequence.
- The video is hidden behind lyrics or a logo: In the Sources dock, move the video above the obstructing source, or move the overlay above the video if the overlay should remain visible. Higher sources render on top.
- YouTube does not show the OBS output: Check that the correct YouTube stream URL and key are entered in OBS, that the encoder is running, and that you are looking at the matching event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- Preview or stream health is poor: Verify the selected output against YouTube’s settings guidance, check that the connection has the recommended upload headroom, and test again with representative audio and movement.
- The stream is interrupted for a rights match: Review the matched material and your permissions. A licence may not prevent an interruption unless the rights owner has also allowlisted your channel in Content ID.
