LinkedIn Games labels Pinpoint “Guess the category.” Choose NYT Strands if you want to discover a theme by finding hidden words, Spelling Bee if you would rather build words from letters, and Wordle if you prefer one-answer deduction. For a screen-free game night, Scrabble and Cross Spin are worthwhile adjacent choices, but neither reproduces Connections’ rules.
What makes NYT Connections different?
Connections is a daily category-matching puzzle built around ambiguity. Its board presents 16 terms. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with every group sharing a common thread. Each solved group receives one of four difficulty colors: yellow, green, blue or purple. The colors communicate difficulty, not a score multiplier.

The New York Times Games catalog describes the objective as “Group words that share a common thread.” That wording matters: the game is not simply a vocabulary test. You must decide which relationship the puzzle setter intends when several words appear to fit together. Red-herring relationships are deliberately part of the challenge, so a useful alternative should be judged by how much category inference and ambiguity it preserves—not merely by whether it is another daily word game.
That gives you five practical comparison questions:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Mechanic: Are you grouping a full set of clues, identifying one category, searching for hidden words, constructing valid words, or solving one answer?
- Theme: Does the game ask you to recognize a shared idea, reveal a theme, or satisfy vocabulary rules?
- Routine: Is there one featured puzzle, an archive, or extra modes? Current availability can change.
- Social format: Is it designed for solo browser play or for people gathered around a physical board?
- Access: Do account requirements, subscriptions or regional restrictions apply?
The best choice depends on which part of Connections you actually miss: the category “aha,” the daily habit, word play, or the social ritual.
Best alternatives at a glance
| Game | Core mechanic | What replaces Connections’ category hunt | Format | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Pinpoint | Infer a shared category | A single category is revealed through clues | Digital, solo | The closest conceptual substitute |
| NYT Strands | Find hidden words | Words reveal an underlying theme | Digital, solo | Theme discovery with a different search mechanic |
| NYT Spelling Bee | Construct words from seven letters | Vocabulary generation replaces grouping | Digital, solo | Players who want a larger word list to explore |
| Wordle | Deduce one five-letter word | Feedback narrows a single answer | Digital, solo | A short, focused deduction puzzle |
| Scrabble | Build and score words on a board | Strategic word placement replaces categories | Physical or digital, multiplayer | Competitive, screen-free word play |
| Cross Spin | Complete crossword-style entries | Clue solving and board construction replace grouping | Physical, 2–6 players | A screen-free group session |
Pinpoint is the only option here that directly targets category inference. Strands keeps theme discovery but asks you to search for words. The remaining games are better understood as adjacent choices rather than format clones.
LinkedIn Pinpoint: the closest Connections alternative
How the mechanic differs
LinkedIn’s official Games page labels Pinpoint “Guess the category” and presents it within a broader collection introduced with the line “Connect over fun, daily games.” The premise preserves the most distinctive Connections skill: looking at clues, testing possible relationships and committing to the category that explains them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Pinpoint does not use the documented Connections board of 16 terms divided into four groups of four, nor does it use Connections’ yellow, green, blue and purple difficulty assignments. You are solving a category-inference problem rather than four parallel groups. That usually makes the decision tree narrower, while the central satisfaction—recognizing what disparate clues have in common—remains intact.
Who should choose it
- Choose Pinpoint if your favorite moment is spotting the intended connection between apparently unrelated clues.
- Choose it when you want a digital puzzle that feels conceptually related without repeating the exact 16-to-4 format.
- Choose another game if your enjoyment comes mainly from juggling several competing groups and disarming red herrings at once.
Daily access and account caveats
Pinpoint appears as part of LinkedIn’s daily-games collection, but account requirements, regional access and the number of available modes can change. Check the live LinkedIn Games page before making it your fixed routine. Do not assume that a page’s current access conditions, archive or extra-play policy will be identical in every country or for every account tier.
NYT Strands: keep the theme, change the search
What you do
The NYT Strands listing quoted by iTechGuides says, “Uncover hidden words and reveal the theme.” That is a meaningful bridge from Connections: both games ask you to infer an organizing idea, but Strands makes word discovery the first task. Instead of sorting 16 visible terms into four sets, you search the puzzle for words that fit the emerging theme.

Why it feels familiar
Strands rewards the same kind of flexible thinking that helps in Connections. A clue may look ordinary until the theme gives it a second meaning, and finding one answer can make the rest of the puzzle easier to interpret. The difference is that you are not defending four separate categories against red herrings. You are building a themed set from hidden entries and using the discovered theme to guide the next search.

- You want a theme reveal rather than a classification board.
- You enjoy scanning for words and recognizing how they fit a unifying idea.
- You are comfortable with a puzzle whose progress depends on finding entries, not selecting four items at a time.
If your ideal replacement must show four completed categories and color-coded difficulty, Strands is not a mechanical substitute. It is the best thematic substitute among the NYT options listed here.
NYT Spelling Bee: a vocabulary-building alternative
The stated goal
The NYT Spelling Bee listing quoted by iTechGuides asks, “How many words can you make with 7 letters?” The objective is word construction: you work from a fixed seven-letter set and submit valid words. This removes category ambiguity and replaces it with the challenge of recognizing legal words, finding longer forms and exhausting the useful combinations.
How the thinking changes
Connections asks whether four terms belong together under the setter’s intended relationship. Spelling Bee asks whether a sequence of letters forms an accepted word under the game’s rules. You are no longer comparing meanings across a 16-item board; you are exploring a constrained vocabulary space. That makes Spelling Bee a strong choice for players who like the daily discipline of a word puzzle but do not need a thematic classification mechanic.
Choose Spelling Bee if
- You prefer generating many answers to finding one category.
- You enjoy experimenting with prefixes, suffixes, plurals and less-common vocabulary.
- You want a puzzle that rewards persistence after the first obvious words are gone.
It is not the right pick if your favorite Connections skill is spotting a hidden relationship between ordinary words. There is no four-group deduction layer to preserve.

The rule set
The NYT Wordle listing quoted by iTechGuides describes it as “Guess the 5-letter word with 6 chances.” Each attempt supplies feedback that narrows the possibilities for one answer. The game therefore offers a concentrated deduction loop rather than a broad classification problem.

Why Connections players may like it
Both games reward testing a hypothesis, learning from feedback and avoiding premature certainty. In Connections, a wrong grouping can expose a red herring or force you to reconsider a category. In Wordle, letter-position feedback changes which guesses remain plausible. The intellectual rhythm is similar—propose, inspect evidence, revise—but the information is different.
Choose Wordle when
- You want a fast single-answer puzzle instead of four simultaneous groups.
- You enjoy deduction from explicit feedback more than semantic association.
- You prefer a fixed six-guess limit and a clearly defined target.
Wordle is the least category-like recommendation in this list, but it is a clean daily substitute for someone who values a short, repeatable reasoning ritual over theme discovery.
Scrabble: the screen-free competitive option
What changes
Scrabble changes the goal from solving a publisher-set puzzle to constructing and scoring words on a shared board. You use the tiles available to you, connect words to existing plays and pursue high-value placements. Other players’ choices directly affect the board, so the experience is interactive rather than a solo daily challenge.
Why it belongs in the comparison
Scrabble is not a Connections clone and should not be presented as one. It is a useful answer to the question, “What can I play after Connections when I want words but no screen?” The pleasure comes from strategic construction, spatial planning and competitive scoring, not from identifying four hidden categories.
Best use case
- Choose Scrabble for a repeatable game night with direct competition.
- Choose it when you want replayability instead of one featured board.
- Choose it if physical tiles and conversation are part of the appeal.
Players looking for the quiet, finite experience of a daily puzzle may find Scrabble more open-ended and more dependent on opponents than Connections.
Cross Spin: a physical group alternative
Published specifications
Cross Spin is described as a 2–6-player crossword board game with 160 cards and 10 boards. Those numbers make it the most explicitly group-oriented option in this comparison.

| Specification | Cross Spin |

| Players | 2–6 |
| Cards | 160 |
| Boards | 10 |
| Relationship to Connections | Adjacent word and clue play; not a 16-term, four-category puzzle |
What the experience is like
Cross Spin moves the activity from a browser to a shared table. Crossword-style entries and board decisions provide the structure, while the player count supports a family or friend-group session. The game therefore answers a different need from Pinpoint: not “Where is the closest category mechanic?” but “What can replace a solo word puzzle with a physical social activity?”
Choose Cross Spin when
- You need a screen-free game for two to six people.
- You want a defined set of components—160 cards and 10 boards—rather than an endlessly changing online feed.
- You enjoy crossword-style clue solving more than semantic grouping.
Because Cross Spin uses a different structure, do not expect Connections-style category inference, color-coded difficulty or the same one-board daily cadence.

If category inference is the non-negotiable feature
Start with LinkedIn Pinpoint. Its “Guess the category” label is the clearest match for the reasoning at the heart of Connections. Accept that the scope is different: Pinpoint is not documented here as a four-group, 16-term board with four difficulty colors.
If theme discovery matters more than grouping
Choose NYT Strands. It retains the idea that a puzzle has an underlying theme, then asks you to uncover hidden words that reveal it. This is the natural pivot for players who describe Connections as a daily exercise in noticing what belongs together.
If you want more words, not more categories
Choose NYT Spelling Bee. Its seven-letter constraint turns the session into vocabulary exploration. It is especially suitable when you enjoy continuing after the first solution rather than stopping once a set is identified.

If you want one clean deduction
Choose Wordle. Its five-letter target and six chances create a compact loop with a clear endpoint. It sacrifices category play for direct, feedback-driven narrowing.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you want other people at the table
Choose Scrabble for competitive word construction or Cross Spin for a crossword-style board game designed for 2–6 players. Scrabble is the broader replayable contest; Cross Spin supplies a fixed physical package of 160 cards and 10 boards.
Are there free daily category games?
The available evidence identifies Pinpoint as part of LinkedIn’s daily-games collection, but it does not establish a universal price, account policy or regional access rule. The same caution applies to the NYT titles and any archive or additional mode. Before you rely on a game for a daily routine, open its current game page and verify:
- Whether the featured puzzle is accessible without a paid subscription in your region.
- Whether an account or sign-in is required.
- Whether the game offers one current puzzle, an archive, or both.
- Whether the rules, interface and availability differ on mobile and desktop.
“Daily” describes the intended cadence, not a promise that every player will see identical access terms. A game can be a strong mechanical fit and still be unavailable to a particular account or region.
How to switch from Connections without frustration
Identify the part you are replacing
Before choosing, name the specific habit you want to preserve: category insight, theme revelation, word volume, short deduction, or social play. This avoids choosing a game merely because it is marketed as a word puzzle.
Expect different kinds of uncertainty
Connections creates uncertainty through overlapping relationships and red herrings. Pinpoint keeps category inference but narrows the field. Strands creates uncertainty about where the hidden words are. Spelling Bee creates uncertainty about which letter combinations count as valid words. Wordle creates uncertainty about the identity and placement of letters. Scrabble and Cross Spin add uncertainty from board state, clues and other players.
Keep the routine, not the rules
A replacement does not need to reproduce the 16-term board to preserve the daily ritual. Set a regular time, use the same device or table, and treat each game on its own terms. Comparing every puzzle to Connections’ four-color structure will make a good alternative feel wrong for the wrong reason.
Bottom line: the right Connections alternative by player type
| Your priority | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Closest category reasoning | LinkedIn Pinpoint | It explicitly asks you to “Guess the category.” |
| Theme discovery | NYT Strands | It asks you to uncover hidden words and reveal a theme. |
| Making many words | NYT Spelling Bee | Its seven-letter format focuses on vocabulary generation. |
| One concise deduction | Wordle | You get six chances to guess one five-letter word. |
| Competitive screen-free words | Scrabble | Scored construction creates a replayable multiplayer contest. |
| Screen-free group puzzle | Cross Spin | It supports 2–6 players with 160 cards and 10 boards. |
For most former Connections players, try Pinpoint first, then Strands if the theme is what you miss. Move to Spelling Bee or Wordle when you want a different vocabulary or deduction challenge, and choose Scrabble or Cross Spin when the priority is gathering people around a table.
