For an iPad or mixed-device workflow centered on handwritten notebooks and marked-up PDFs, Goodnotes is the most broadly suitable starting point. Notability is a strong alternative when recording and reviewing notes is more important than a large, cross-platform library. OneNote fits people already working across Microsoft devices and services, while Apple Notes is the simplest no-cost option inside Apple hardware. If PDFs are the main job, PDF Expert deserves a separate look.
Those are workflow matches, not an independent ranking. The published feature comparisons are vendor-authored, and prices, operating-system support, and plan names can change. Test the free tier or trial with your own handwriting and a representative PDF before paying.

Notion is better aligned with typed, database-driven information than pen-first notebooks. Samsung Notes is a sensible free choice for Galaxy owners. Neither is a universal winner for the handwriting-plus-PDF brief.
Start with the device you already own
Device compatibility is the first filter because an app can be excellent on one operating system and incomplete on another. Goodnotes’ October 1, 2026 guide lists iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chromebooks, and web browsers, while warning that some features vary by platform. OneNote is presented as cross-platform. Apple Notes is designed around Apple devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make a short list of the devices that must open the same notebook: for example, an iPad with a stylus, a Windows laptop, and a phone. Then check each app on that exact combination. Do not assume that a feature shown on an iPad is available in the Windows, Android, web, or Chromebook version. A browser client may let you read a notebook while omitting a pen tool, audio controls, or a particular export option.
- Apple-only setup: Goodnotes, Notability, Apple Notes, and PDF Expert are the most relevant candidates in the supplied comparisons. Check the required iOS or iPadOS version before relying on a feature.
- Mixed Apple, Windows, Android, or Chromebook setup: Goodnotes and OneNote are the obvious starting points, but verify feature parity rather than choosing from the platform list alone.
- Samsung Galaxy tablet: Samsung Notes is a free ecosystem option; Goodnotes also names S Pen support on Samsung tablets. Confirm the exact tablet and pen combination.
- No compatible active stylus: An app cannot compensate for poor pen hardware. Check stylus compatibility before buying software.
Handwriting search is not the same as PDF OCR
“Searchable” can mean several different things. A library may find words you wrote with a pen, typed titles, or text already embedded in a PDF. An image-only scan is different: it contains pixels but no text layer, so annotation support alone does not make its printed words searchable.
Search in your own handwriting
Goodnotes describes searching handwritten notes, typed text, titles, and outlines across a library. Notability’s Classic plan lists handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search. Apple Notes is marked as supporting handwriting-to-text and handwriting/PDF search in the Goodnotes comparison. MyScript Notes is listed as supporting handwriting conversion and handwriting/PDF search.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These are product feature claims, not accuracy benchmarks. Recognition can depend on your writing style, language, pen input, and the app version. A neat sample page is not enough evidence: test a page of your normal shorthand, joined letters, numbers, and symbols.
Search in PDFs
Goodnotes’ PDF comparison qualifies text search as dependent on an existing OCR layer. That distinction matters for lecture scans, photographed worksheets, and older documents. If the PDF was created from images, ask whether the app can create an OCR layer, whether that OCR is searchable in the library or only in the open document, and whether the result can be exported.
When a vendor page says it searches scanned documents, read that alongside the OCR qualification. Open one image-only scan in the free version and try a distinctive word before assuming your entire archive will be indexed.
Markup is different from editing the PDF itself
Writing on a PDF, highlighting a paragraph, adding a comment, or inserting a signature is markup. Editing the underlying sentence, replacing an image, changing a page’s layout, or altering a form field is direct PDF editing. Many note-taking apps excel at the first group without offering the second.

Before choosing an app for work or school forms, identify the operation you actually need:
- Review: pen strokes, highlights, shapes, comments, and bookmarks may be sufficient.
- Rearrange: look for page insertion, deletion, duplication, rotation, and thumbnail management.
- Change content: verify direct editing of existing text and images; do not infer it from an annotation toolbar.
- Return a file to someone else: check whether exported annotations stay editable or are flattened into the page.
Goodnotes documents both editable and flattened PDF export choices. Editable output is useful when a collaborator must continue marking the file; flattened output is safer for a final copy but removes the separate annotation layer. Export a sample and reopen it in a different PDF reader before committing to a long-term workflow.
Goodnotes: the broadest handwriting-and-PDF starting point
Goodnotes describes itself as a handwriting-first note-taking app with AI and PDF annotation in the same workspace. Its documented search scope includes handwriting, typed text, searchable PDF text, titles, and outlines. The PDF qualification still applies: text search in a PDF depends on an OCR layer, so image-only scans need verification.
Where it fits
- One library for handwritten notebooks and marked-up PDFs.
- Search across notebooks and document text, with folders or outlines for retrieval.
- Audio-linked notes for lectures or meetings.
- Shared-document collaboration.
- Choice of editable or flattened PDF export.
- Support named by the vendor for Apple Pencil on iPad and S Pen on Samsung tablets.
Goodnotes also describes one-way cloud backup options. Treat backup as protection against loss, not automatically as two-way synchronization: confirm what is backed up, where it is stored, and how restoration works on your devices.
Plans and platform caveats
Goodnotes’ October 1, 2026 guide lists a free plan, Essential from $11.99 per year, Pro at $35.99 per year, Teams at $120 per year, an Apple-only Special Edition at $35.99 one time, and an AI Pass at $9.99 per month on the stated plans. The guide says full AI access requires the add-on or a qualifying plan. These are vendor-listed prices, subject to region, taxes, platform, and change; check checkout before subscribing.
The same guide lists iOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chromebooks, and web browsers. “Available” does not mean identical: compare the features you need on the specific device where you will write, search, record, and export.
Notability: a note-focused alternative
Notability is relevant when your work revolves around notes rather than a broad cross-platform document library. Its official pricing page lists handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search in Classic. The page also describes business-plan features including unlimited note-taking and PDF annotation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Goodnotes’ August 26, 2026 comparison characterizes Notability as the more note-focused choice and reports Notability Pro at $79.99 per year. That characterization and price comparison come from a competitor, so use them as a description of how Goodnotes positions the product, not as an independent quality verdict.

MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo): prioritize conversion
MyScript Notes is worth considering when turning pen input into typed text is central to your workflow. Goodnotes’ October 1, 2026 guide marks handwriting-to-text, handwriting/PDF search, and handwriting on PDFs as supported, while indicating that some other features are limited.
Those entries are a feature-level overview from a competing vendor, not a handwriting-accuracy study. Test conversion with your language, mathematical notation, abbreviations, and ordinary handwriting. Confirm the current operating systems, export formats, pricing, and whether converted text remains linked to the original ink.
Microsoft OneNote: cross-platform and familiar, with important limits
OneNote is a practical starting point for readers already using Microsoft tools or needing a basic option across devices. The Goodnotes comparison presents it as cross-platform and free at a basic level.
The same comparison describes handwriting conversion and handwriting search as limited and says PDFs import as static images. It also states that many consumer AI and ink features are Windows-only and require a paid Microsoft 365 or Copilot plan. Check the exact OneNote client and Microsoft plan before promising a feature to a reader who works mainly on macOS, Android, iPadOS, or the web.
If your requirement is simply “draw on a reference PDF and keep it with my notes,” static-image import may be workable. If you need text extraction, searchable scans, or direct editing of PDF content, test those operations explicitly.

Apple Notes: the simplest Apple-ecosystem entry point
Apple Notes is a sensible first experiment for someone who already owns Apple hardware and wants a built-in, no-separate-purchase workflow. Goodnotes’ comparison marks handwriting-to-text and handwriting/PDF search as supported, while PDF handwriting is marked limited.
That matrix does not prove identical behavior across every Apple device or operating-system release. Check the version on your iPad, Mac, and phone, then export a marked PDF and inspect it in another reader. Choose Apple Notes when its built-in organization and sharing meet your needs; move to a dedicated handwriting app when you need richer notebook controls, audio-linked notes, or more explicit PDF export choices.

PDF Expert: choose it when the PDF is the center of the job
PDF Expert is a PDF-first option for Apple users rather than a general notebook recommendation. Readdle’s help documentation says handwriting recognition requires iOS 27 or iPadOS 27, the latest PDF Expert version, and Premium. Under those prerequisites, it supports searching handwriting in the PDF Expert library.
The same documentation says converting handwriting to typed text is available to all users, while library-wide searchable handwriting requires Premium. It states support for 29 languages. This is a vendor feature claim, not a comparative performance result, and the operating-system and app-version requirements are especially easy to outgrow. Verify them immediately before purchase.
Notion and Samsung Notes: ecosystem-specific alternatives
Notion
Notion appears in the 2026 comparison as a typed, database-driven notes tool. It can be a better fit for structured pages, project records, and linked databases than for a pen-first notebook with extensive PDF markup. Include it only if your workflow is primarily typed and your handwriting requirement is occasional.
Samsung Notes
Samsung Notes is framed as a free Galaxy option. It is a logical candidate for someone who already owns a compatible Samsung tablet and S Pen. Confirm the exact device, desktop access, PDF tools, search behavior, and export format before moving a large archive.

Compare the apps on the tasks you actually perform
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Devices and parity | Can every required device open, edit, search, and export the same files? | A broad platform list may hide missing tools on one client. |
| Handwriting capture | Does your stylus work with the target tablet? Are palm rejection and pen tools available? | Hardware and app support jointly determine writing comfort. |
| Conversion and search | Can it find your ink, convert it to text, and search the language you use? | Recognition claims are not the same as measured accuracy. |
| PDF OCR | Does search work on image-only scans, or only PDFs that already contain text? | Scanned documents often lack an OCR layer. |
| PDF capability | Do you need markup, page management, or direct editing of existing content? | Annotation tools do not necessarily edit the PDF itself. |
| Organization | Are folders, notebooks, outlines, bookmarks, and whole-library search present? | Retrieval matters more as your archive grows. |
| Export and backup | Are annotations editable or flattened? Is backup one-way or synchronized? | Export choices affect collaboration and long-term access. |
| Audio | Can you record audio and link it to written notes, if required? | This can be decisive for lectures and interviews. |
| Price and paywalls | Is the needed feature free, a subscription, a one-time purchase, or an add-on? | The cheapest download may not provide the required workflow. |

A five-minute trial that reveals most deal-breakers
Use the same test pack in every app instead of relying on screenshots or feature checklists.
- Create a normal handwriting page. Write a paragraph in your usual style, including dates, numbers, abbreviations, and a word you can search later.
- Search for the handwritten word. Record whether the result finds the page, how quickly it appears, and whether the search covers the whole library or only the open note.
- Import two PDFs. Use one digitally created PDF with selectable text and one image-only scan. Search the same word in both and note whether OCR is automatic, optional, unavailable, or limited to the document view.
- Annotate and edit. Highlight, draw, add a comment, reorder a page, and try to change existing PDF text. This separates markup from direct editing.
- Export twice. Save one editable-annotation PDF and one flattened PDF if the app offers both. Open each in another reader and check whether pen strokes, comments, links, and page order survived.
- Test another device. Open the notebook or exported file on every device you actually use. Check pen tools, search, audio, and sharing rather than only read access.
- Check the paywall. Attempt the exact feature you need, such as handwriting search, OCR, audio recording, or cloud backup, before entering payment details.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
“The app searches handwriting, but not my scanned PDF”
Your scan may be image-only. Look for an OCR command or import setting, then confirm that the resulting text is searchable and retained on export. If the app only searches PDFs that already contain text, run OCR elsewhere or choose a tool that explicitly supports your scan workflow.
“My annotations disappeared when I shared the file”
You may have exported a flattened copy, used a viewer that hides annotation layers, or shared an app-specific document instead of a standard PDF. Keep the original notebook, export an editable PDF when further review is expected, and open the result in a second reader before sending it.
“The feature exists on one device but not another”
Platform parity is incomplete in many ecosystems. Check the app’s client, operating-system version, and subscription tier separately. A feature listed for iPadOS does not guarantee availability in a browser or Windows client.
“The free plan worked until my archive grew”
Free tiers can limit pages, notebooks, sync, export, or advanced search. Before importing years of notes, identify the limits that affect your archive and test restoration from backup.
“Recognition is poor for my writing”
Try a different pen width, write a short calibration sample if the app offers one, and test the language and symbols you actually use. If conversion remains unreliable, treat the app as an ink-and-PDF tool rather than paying for search you will not trust.
How to choose without a universal ranking
- Choose the ecosystem. Start with the tablet and computers that must share the work.
- Define the PDF job. Decide whether you need annotation only, page management, OCR for scans, or direct content editing.
- Define retrieval. Decide whether searching handwriting, PDF text, titles, outlines, or an entire library matters most.
- Define sharing and preservation. Check editable versus flattened export, backup direction, and compatibility with the people who receive your files.
- Price the required tier. Include AI add-ons, one-time versus recurring billing, taxes, and regional differences.
- Run the same trial pack. Keep the app that handles your handwriting and PDFs reliably on every required device, even if another app has a longer feature list.
For most readers, that process will narrow the field quickly: Goodnotes for a broad handwriting-and-PDF workspace, Notability for a note-centered workflow, OneNote for cross-platform basics, Apple Notes for an Apple-only starting point, MyScript Notes for conversion, and PDF Expert for PDF-first work on Apple devices.
