Best confirmed approach: use a rigid, mechanical cradle or clamp that keeps magnets and magnetic metal away from the rear camera. A vehicle-specific dashboard base paired with a universal adjustable cradle is the clearest documented option: the cradle holds an iPhone in its case without magnets. A second route is a nonmagnetic universal clamp that locks into a compatible twist-to-lock mounting system. Neither option has been independently shown to produce steadier video than the other, so choose by camera clearance, vehicle fit, rigidity and ecosystem compatibility rather than by unverified footage claims.
Why a nonmagnetic mount matters to an iPhone camera
Apple’s camera guidance is specific: magnets or magnetisable metal close to the rear cameras can interfere with the sensors that position lenses for optical image stabilisation (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus. Apple Support says, “For the best camera performance, avoid accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera (or cameras).” The statement appears in Apple’s support article “Magnetic accessories may interfere with iPhone cameras,” published 22 January 2024.

OIS uses a gyroscope to detect movement and shifts a lens to counter image motion. Closed-loop autofocus uses onboard accelerometers to measure and compensate for gravity and vibration, while magnetic sensors determine lens position. A strong magnetic field can affect those sensors and limit lens movement. That is why a mount can hold the phone securely yet still be a poor choice if its magnet, steel plate or magnetic ring sits beside the camera module.
The safest interpretation is practical rather than alarmist: do not put a magnet or magnetic metal near the rear camera. Apple’s guidance does not say that every magnetic phone holder will permanently damage every iPhone, and the available product information does not establish a damage rate. For a camera-dependent driver, avoiding the possible interference costs little because mechanical retention systems are available.

Which iPhones have the camera systems Apple describes?
| Camera feature | Models identified by Apple | Why it matters to mount selection |
|---|---|---|
| Optical image stabilisation (OIS) | iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 7 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | These phones use a lens-positioning system that Apple says can be affected by a strong magnetic field. |
| Closed-loop autofocus | iPhone XS and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | The autofocus system measures gravity and vibration and uses magnetic sensors to determine lens position. |
| Ultra Wide camera without OIS | iPhone 11 and later | The lack of OIS on this camera does not remove Apple’s general advice to keep magnets away from rear cameras. |
| Telephoto camera without OIS | iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus | Other cameras in the same phone can still use stabilisation or autofocus systems covered by Apple’s warning. |
These model details explain the mechanism; they are not a reason to treat any iPhone as magnet-proof. The same avoidance rule is the sensible default for the entire rear-camera assembly.
The best documented nonmagnetic mounting options
Vehicle-specific dashboard base plus universal adjustable cradle
ProClip describes a two-part system: a dashboard base selected for the exact vehicle, and a universal adjustable cradle that holds any iPhone in any case without magnets. The base clips into seams in the vehicle’s trim, while the cradle provides the mechanical grip around the phone. Because the retention comes from adjustable arms rather than a magnetic pad, this configuration directly addresses Apple’s camera concern.
This is the strongest documented match for a driver who wants a nonmagnetic mount and does not want to remove a case. It is not a universal “fits every dashboard” product: the base must be chosen for the vehicle’s year, make and model. Before ordering, verify that the installed position leaves the camera lenses unobstructed and does not intrude into the driver’s view of the road or vehicle controls.

SP Connect Universal Phone Clamp with a compatible SPC+ mount
SP Connect describes its Universal Phone Clamp as nonmagnetic. It attaches to SPC+ mounts with a 90-degree twist-to-lock movement, giving the phone a mechanical connection to the mount head rather than a magnetic one. This can work well if you already use, or deliberately choose, a compatible SPC+ car mounting setup.
Compatibility needs more checking than the product name suggests. SP Connect’s support information excludes several mount heads, including the listed Vent Mount and Charging Suction Mount. The clamp itself also does not support inductive charging. Confirm the exact mount head and the exact clamp version before purchase; a physically similar head is not necessarily supported.
- Retention: nonmagnetic clamp plus a 90-degree SPC+ twist lock.
- Vehicle interface: depends on the compatible SPC+ car mount selected.
- Case use: check the clamp’s adjustment range against the phone and case thickness.
- Charging: the clamp does not provide inductive charging.
- Main risk: pairing it with an excluded mount head or assuming every SP Connect car accessory uses the same interface.
Why a generic magnetic-looking kit should not be assumed safe
A product can advertise a “car kit” without proving that its phone attachment is nonmagnetic. A suction, vent or dashboard base describes where the mount attaches to the vehicle, not how the phone is retained. A metal plate hidden in a case, a magnetic ring or a magnetic mount head can still sit next to the rear camera.

Quad Lock’s official iPhone car-kit page presents suction windshield/dashboard and vent configurations, but the retrieved information also describes magnetic attachment and does not establish a specific nonmagnetic configuration. Treat that page as a lead to verify rather than as a confirmed recommendation for this use case. Ask the seller or manufacturer exactly what contacts the phone and whether any magnetisable metal is positioned near the camera.

How to choose a mount without relying on marketing claims
1. Identify the complete phone, case and vehicle combination
Write down the exact iPhone model, the case you will use, and the vehicle’s year, make and model. A cradle that fits a bare phone may not open wide enough for a rugged case. A vehicle-specific base can be secure in one dashboard seam and impossible to install in another model. If you switch cases often, measure the thickest case and check the cradle’s published adjustment range.
2. Confirm the retention mechanism
Look for words such as mechanical cradle, adjustable clamp or twist-to-lock clamp. Then check the product diagram or installation instructions for magnets, magnetic plates, steel rings or magnetic charging components. “Magnetic-free” should describe the phone-contacting mechanism, not merely the vehicle base.

3. Check camera and screen clearance
- Hold the phone in the proposed orientation and view the camera preview at the widest lens you use.
- Make sure a cradle arm, corner pad or case edge does not appear in the frame.
- Check that the mount does not cover the Dynamic Island, front camera or screen controls if you use navigation or recording.
- Confirm that the phone can be removed without dragging the mount or twisting the dashboard base.
4. Evaluate the whole assembly for rigidity
Camera quality depends on the complete chain: vehicle attachment, arm, joint, cradle and phone. A rigid dashboard base with a loose ball joint can wobble; a strong cradle attached to a flexible vent can still move. Compare how much each section can flex by hand before installing the phone. This is a practical selection test, not a laboratory ranking.
5. Choose the vehicle position deliberately
A dashboard base generally gives a more fixed position than a soft vent blade, but the correct choice depends on the vehicle. Keep the phone out of air-bag deployment zones, avoid blocking essential controls and preserve a clear view through the windshield. A suction mount requires a suitable, clean, smooth surface and can lose grip as temperature and surface conditions change. Whatever the location, the camera should face through an unobstructed opening rather than through a case cutout that clips the frame.
Installation procedure for a nonmagnetic cradle
- Prepare the phone and case. Install the case you actually use, clean its exterior and check that no magnetic ring, plate or metal insert is attached near the camera.
- Select the vehicle base. For a vehicle-specific dashboard system, match the base to the vehicle’s year, make and model. Do not substitute a similar-looking base.
- Test the location before tightening. Sit in the normal driving position, place the phone in the cradle and check road visibility, camera framing, screen reach and clearance from controls.
- Install the base according to its instructions. A trim-seam base should clip into the intended seam rather than being forced into a gap. Stop if the trim bends, cracks or cannot close around the base.
- Adjust the cradle evenly. Tighten the arms until the phone is secure without squeezing buttons or bowing the case. The camera lenses must remain fully clear.
- Check the joints. Lock the ball joint or angle mechanism, then gently press the phone’s top and sides. Movement should come from the vehicle suspension and not from a loose mount joint.
- Perform a stationary camera test. With the car parked, record a short clip in the lens you normally use. Pan the phone through its intended angles and confirm that no cradle part enters the image.
- Recheck after the first drive. Stop safely and inspect whether the phone has shifted, the cradle has loosened or the base has moved in the trim.
Installation procedure for a twist-to-lock clamp
- Verify the ecosystem. Confirm that the Universal Phone Clamp and the chosen mount head are both SPC+ compatible. Do not rely on the clamp name alone.
- Check exclusions. SP Connect’s compatibility information excludes the listed Vent Mount and Charging Suction Mount. Choose a supported head instead.
- Fit the phone in the clamp. Adjust the clamp to the cased phone, keeping pressure on the case’s strong side rails rather than on buttons or camera lenses.
- Engage the lock. Align the clamp with the mount and turn it through the specified 90-degree twist. Verify that the lock has fully engaged before driving.
- Set the angle and test clearance. Use the camera preview at the widest field of view, then check that the mount does not block the road or essential controls.
- Plan charging separately. Because the clamp does not support inductive charging, use a cable that can reach without crossing the steering wheel, gear selector or air-bag area.
Camera footage, vibration and what the evidence does not prove
There is no dependable head-to-head footage testing in the available manufacturer and Apple material. It therefore would be inaccurate to name one mount the “steadiest” for driving video. Position, road surface, vehicle suspension, phone lens, shutter speed and the rigidity of the complete assembly all affect footage.

Apple’s separate support article “Exposure to vibrations, such as those generated by high-powered motorcycle engines, may impact iPhone cameras,” published 10 November 2023, warns that extended direct exposure to high-amplitude vibration within certain frequency ranges may degrade OIS and closed-loop autofocus. Apple’s specific example is a high-powered or high-volume motorcycle engine, and it recommends a vibration-dampening mount or gimbal when attaching an iPhone to such a motorcycle.
That warning should not be converted into a claim that ordinary car use damages iPhone cameras, nor into proof that any particular car mount protects them. A car mount can still transmit road shocks, but the cited Apple guidance does not quantify a normal-car threshold. If you are mounting an iPhone on a motorcycle or another source of sustained high-amplitude vibration, use Apple’s vibration-dampening advice rather than assuming a standard dashboard cradle is sufficient.
Compatibility and troubleshooting
The camera preview shows a dark corner or obstruction
- Switch temporarily to the widest rear-camera lens to reveal the full obstruction.
- Move the cradle arms lower or farther from the camera bump, provided the phone remains secure.
- Rotate the phone and retest; a portrait position can place an arm in a different part of the frame.
- If the case itself intrudes, replace it or use a cradle with a larger camera clearance area.
The phone slips on rough roads
- Check that the cradle is adjusted to the cased phone, not to a bare-phone dimension.
- Inspect the pads for dirt, compression or a smooth surface that no longer grips.
- Tighten the mount joint and the dashboard-base connection separately; a loose joint can look like a loose cradle.
- If the vehicle-specific base moves in the trim, stop using it until the correct base or installation position is confirmed.
The twist-lock will not engage
- Confirm that the clamp is the SPC+ version required by the mount head.
- Check the alignment before applying the 90-degree turn.
- Review the compatibility list for the exact head; the listed Vent Mount and Charging Suction Mount are excluded in SP Connect’s support information.
- Do not force the lock or modify the interface; use a supported head.
The phone charges inconsistently
The Universal Phone Clamp does not support inductive charging, so intermittent wireless charging is not a fault to solve with repositioning. Use a cable routed safely or choose a different, explicitly compatible charging arrangement that does not place a magnet or magnetic metal beside the rear camera.
The camera focuses or stabilises strangely after mounting
Remove the phone from the mount and any nearby magnetic accessory, then test the camera away from the vehicle setup. If the issue disappears, keep magnets and magnetisable metal away from the rear cameras. If it persists without the accessory, Apple’s support guidance does not establish that the mount is the cause; seek device-specific support rather than repeatedly exposing the camera to the same accessory.
A practical decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| No magnet near the phone and a case-friendly fit | Vehicle-specific dashboard base plus universal adjustable cradle | Exact vehicle base, case thickness, camera clearance and dashboard position |
| A modular mount ecosystem you already own | SP Connect Universal Phone Clamp with a supported SPC+ head | Exact head compatibility, 90-degree lock engagement and cable charging plan |
| Windshield, dashboard or vent placement from a general car kit | Only a configuration whose phone-contacting mechanism is explicitly documented as nonmagnetic | Whether the kit uses a magnet or magnetic metal, not merely where it attaches to the car |
| Smoother footage | The most rigid complete assembly that keeps the camera clear | There is no comparative footage evidence establishing a winner |
What to check at purchase and after installation
- Exact iPhone model and exact case installed.
- Vehicle year, make and model when using a vehicle-specific dashboard base.
- Explicitly nonmagnetic phone retention.
- No magnetisable plate or ring near the rear camera.
- Clearance for every rear-camera lens you use.
- Clear view of the road and access to required controls.
- Rigid connection at the vehicle, arm, joint and cradle.
- Compatibility of every part in a modular system.
- A charging method that does not introduce a nearby magnet and can be routed safely.
- A stationary camera test followed by a safe post-drive inspection.
Bottom line
For an iPhone user who depends on the camera, choose a mechanical mount and keep all magnets and magnetic metal away from the rear-camera area. The clearest documented setup is a vehicle-specific dashboard base with a universal adjustable cradle that accepts an iPhone in its case without magnets. The SP Connect Universal Phone Clamp is another nonmagnetic route, but only with a compatible SPC+ mount head and a separate wired-charging plan. Treat claims about smoother footage or camera protection as unproven unless a source supplies comparable testing; the available evidence supports avoiding magnetic interference, not ranking car mounts by video stability.
