Best Nonalcoholic Wines for People Who Are Drinking Less

For most people cutting back, start with a sparkling or aromatic white. Carbonation and bright acidity replace some of the lift alcohol normally provides, so these styles tend to taste most wine-like. Thomson & Scott Noughty is the strongest all-purpose white pick; Vilarnau 0.0% is the leading sparkling white; and Giesen 0% is a particularly light rosé at 13 calories per 100 ml. Red wine is improving, but removing alcohol makes oak, tannin, dryness and body harder to reproduce.

The bottles below come from tasting and shopping guides published by The Independent, The Guardian and NBC Select. They are editorial recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison, and availability and prices vary by country and retailer.

What “nonalcoholic” wine actually means

Most convincing alcohol-free wines begin as ordinary fermented wine. The producer makes a wine base, then removes ethanol—commonly with vacuum distillation, according to The Guardian. Because alcohol carries aroma and contributes weight on the palate, producers may add some aromas or flavor back after dealcoholization.

The label does not always mean absolute zero. The Independent notes that products sold as nonalcoholic can still contain a small amount of alcohol, typically up to 0.5% ABV. A bottle marked 0.0% is a different labeling claim from one marked “less than 0.5%.” If you must avoid alcohol completely for medical, religious, recovery or other personal reasons, check the exact ABV on the bottle and confirm the specification with the manufacturer.

Expect a style change rather than a perfect replica. Alcohol supplies warmth, texture and a solvent for many aromas. In whites and sparkling wines, acidity, fruit and bubbles can provide enough structure that the difference is modest. In reds, the missing alcohol is usually more obvious because oak, tannin, dryness and body are central to the experience.

How to choose a bottle when you are drinking less

1. Match the style to the occasion

  • Still white: The easiest place to begin if you want a bottle for dinner. Aromatic, high-acid examples can work with seafood, salads, poultry and soft cheeses.
  • Red: Choose when the meal or ritual specifically calls for red fruit and a darker, more structured profile. Expect a lighter body and less tannic grip than in conventional red wine.
  • Sparkling white: The best substitute for a toast or aperitif because bubbles supply intensity and a celebratory texture.
  • Rosé: Useful for lunches, picnics and warm-weather drinking. Dry, crisp versions generally feel less heavy than reds.
  • Sparkling rosé: Prioritize this when the visual ritual and festive character matter as much as the flavor.

2. Balance sweetness with acidity

Without alcohol’s drying and warming effect, sweetness can stand out more. Look for a bottle whose acidity is clearly described or whose tasting notes emphasize freshness, crispness or balance. Sparkling wines get additional lift from carbonation. If you normally prefer bone-dry wine, avoid assuming that “alcohol-free” automatically means dry; read the product description and the producer’s technical information.

3. Treat tannin and body as red-wine variables

Tannin is the drying, grippy sensation from grape skins, seeds and oak. Sarah Kate, a sober sommelier quoted by Healthline, summarizes the challenge: “With red wine, people want oak, they want tannins, they want dryness.” Dealcoholized reds can deliver fruit but often feel softer and shorter. If that trade-off bothers you, an aromatic white, rosé or sparkling wine may be a more satisfying replacement than forcing a red to perform like a full-strength Cabernet.

4. Check ABV, calories and serving format

Record the ABV before buying, especially if “zero” is important to you. Calorie information is not universal, but Giesen 0% New Zealand rosé is listed at 13 calories per 100 ml. A standard wine bottle is convenient for a dinner or group; a single-serve can or smaller format may be better when your goal is to limit how much is opened at once. The sources do not establish a universal serving size or calorie range across these products, so compare the individual labels rather than assuming one bottle represents the category.

Best nonalcoholic white wines

Thomson & Scott Noughty: best all-purpose white

The Independent names Noughty its overall pick. It combines chenin blanc and chardonnay, is vegan, and contains less than 0.5% ABV. The guide describes it as creamy and fruit-forward and notes spun-cone processing, a method used to remove alcohol at relatively low temperatures.

Choose Noughty when you want one bottle that can cover a weeknight meal, a dinner party or a glass poured while others drink conventional wine. Its creamy texture gives more presence than a very light aperitif, while the fruit profile keeps it approachable for people who are new to alcohol-free wine. Because the stated ABV is below 0.5% rather than explicitly 0.0%, it is not the right assumption for someone who requires absolute zero without checking further.

Leitz Eins Zwei Zero Riesling: best for aromatic, high-acid white lovers

The Guardian highlights this Riesling as a route for readers who want a wine with a clear historical and regional identity rather than a generic sweet grape drink. Riesling’s aromatic character and high acidity are useful in a dealcoholized format: fragrance provides complexity, while acidity keeps the finish from feeling flat.

Pick it for dishes where freshness matters more than weight. The cited guide does not state an ABV, sweetness level or calorie figure, so verify those details on the bottle before purchase.

Saint Viviana Sauvignon Blanc: best with cheese or roast chicken

The Guardian recommends Saint Viviana Sauvignon Blanc with cheese or roast chicken and lists melon, grapefruit and gooseberry notes. Those flavors point to a bright, fruit-led white that can cut through creamy cheese or complement a simply seasoned poultry dish.

This is the most targeted white recommendation in the list: buy it when the meal is the deciding factor, not merely because you want a general substitute. The cited guide does not provide an ABV or calorie figure.

Best nonalcoholic red wines

Red is the category in which expectations need the most adjustment. Healthline’s explanation is practical: carbonation can restore some expected intensity in other styles, but red-wine drinkers notice the loss of oak, tannin and dryness after alcohol removal. The bottles below are the strongest named options, yet none should be expected to reproduce the heat, grip or full body of a conventional red at the same price point.

Cognato dealcoholised Cabernet Sauvignon: best for a rich, food-focused red

The Independent names Cognato its best red and describes rich, ripe-fruit and red-berry character designed for food pairing. That emphasis matters. A dealcoholized Cabernet is more likely to feel convincing alongside a substantial meal than when sipped alone and judged against a full-strength Cabernet.

Serve it when the table wants red-wine color and dark fruit, but keep the pairing and the softer structure in mind. The cited guide does not state the bottle’s final ABV, calorie count or tannin level.

Leitz Zero Point Five Pinot Noir: best Pinot Noir-style option

NBC Select recommends Leitz Zero Point Five Pinot Noir as its best nonalcoholic red. Pinot Noir is generally chosen for red-fruit character and a lighter frame than Cabernet, so this style can be a gentler entry point for someone who finds alcohol-free Cabernet too soft in the middle or too obviously fruit-driven.

The name signals a 0.5 designation, but check the local label for the legally stated ABV. NBC Select’s cited recommendation does not provide a calorie figure or detailed tasting notes.

Oddbird GSM: best red for steak

The Guardian selects Oddbird GSM for pairing with steak. A GSM blend—Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre—normally suggests ripe fruit and savory depth, which are useful qualities when alcohol removal has reduced weight. The recommendation is specifically food-oriented: the steak supplies roasted, savory flavors that can make a softer red feel more complete.

The cited guide does not state ABV, calories or the proportions of the blend, so use the bottle’s own technical label for those details.

Best nonalcoholic sparkling wines

Vilarnau 0.0% alcohol-free sparkling white: best for a toast

The Independent names Vilarnau 0.0% its best sparkling wine. The guide reports persistent bubbles, orchard and floral flavors, and a balance between sweetness and acidity. Those are exactly the structural elements that help sparkling wine survive dealcoholization: carbonation adds intensity, while acidity prevents the drink from tasting merely sweet.

Choose it for a toast, aperitif or any gathering where the sound and appearance of a sparkling bottle are part of the ritual. The product name states 0.0%, but still read the local label if zero alcohol is a strict requirement.

Gruvi Dry Secco: best when you want a drier sparkling style

NBC Select names Gruvi Dry Secco its best sparkling nonalcoholic wine. “Dry” is the key differentiator for shoppers who dislike the sweetness common in alcohol-free alternatives. It is a sensible choice for a dinner table or an aperitif when you want bubbles without a dessert-like finish.

NBC Select’s cited guide does not state the exact ABV, calorie count or grape composition. Confirm those details before ordering, particularly because nonalcoholic labeling can allow up to 0.5% ABV.

Freixenet Alcohol-Removed Sparkling White: best for sparkling cocktails

The Guardian recommends Freixenet’s alcohol-removed sparkling white as a mixer for sparkling cocktails. Use it when the bottle is one component of a drink rather than the entire experience: bubbles provide the lift, while fruit, citrus or other nonalcoholic ingredients supply additional flavor.

The cited recommendation does not establish the product’s ABV, sweetness or calorie count. Check the bottle before building a recipe around it.

Best nonalcoholic rosé

Giesen 0% New Zealand rosé: best light, crisp option

The Independent’s rosé pick is crisp, refreshing and vegan. The guide lists no more than 0.5% ABV and 13 calories per 100 ml, making this the only bottle in the recommendations with a published calorie figure. It suits a weeknight replacement when you want a lighter style rather than the weight of red wine.

“No more than 0.5% ABV” still means the bottle is not necessarily chemically identical to a 0.0% product. Use the stated figure as a label specification, not as a medical guarantee.

Ramona Dry Sparkling Nonalcoholic Rosé: best for a picnic cooler

The Guardian recommends Ramona for a picnic cooler and describes strawberry, raspberry and red-grape notes. The fruit profile and sparkling format make it a natural choice for outdoor meals, where a chilled, easy-drinking bottle matters more than red-wine tannin.

The cited guide does not state ABV or calories. Confirm both on the package, especially if the bottle will be shared with someone avoiding all alcohol.

Oddbird sparkling nonalcoholic rosé: best for a celebratory pink pour

The Independent names Oddbird its best sparkling rosé and describes it as fruit-forward and celebratory. Pick it when the visual cue of rosé bubbles is important—birthdays, brunches and toasts—while still wanting a wine-like fruit profile rather than a soft drink.

No ABV or calorie figure is established in the cited guide, so read the current label.

Pair the bottle to the moment

Your priority Start with Reason
A single versatile dinner white Thomson & Scott Noughty Creamy, fruit-forward blend with enough presence for a meal

Toast or aperitif Vilarnau 0.0% Persistent bubbles with orchard and floral flavors

Label and purchase checklist

  1. Read the ABV line, not just the front label. Distinguish 0.0% from less than or no more than 0.5%.
  2. Identify the style. “Alcohol-free wine” can mean still white, red, rosé or sparkling; the texture and pairing will differ substantially.
  3. Look for sweetness and acidity clues. “Dry,” “crisp,” “high-acid” and “balanced” are more useful than the alcohol-free claim alone.
  4. For reds, lower your body expectations. Decide whether fruit and food compatibility are enough, because oak and tannin may be muted.
  5. Check the current technical sheet or label. ABV, calories, ingredients and availability can vary by market and vintage.
  6. Buy according to the occasion. Use sparkling for ceremony, aromatic white for dinner, rosé for lighter drinking and red only when its food role matters.

What the category can—and cannot—promise

Interest is growing: NBC Select cites a 2026 Mintel survey in which 39% of consumers said they were open to trying a sober-curious lifestyle, and The Independent reports that low- and alcohol-free wine sales more than doubled in 2024. Those figures describe consumer interest and sales, not proof that every bottle tastes like conventional wine.

The named recommendations come from editorial tasting panels and writers. No cited source establishes that any bottle is medically safer for every person, and none provides a controlled, head-to-head test of all the products listed here. If you are taking medication, in recovery, pregnant, or required to avoid alcohol for another reason, ask an appropriate clinician and verify the exact product specification rather than relying on the category name.

For the closest sensory substitute, begin with bubbles or a bright white. For a red-wine meal, choose the bottle whose fruit profile and pairing fit the dish, then accept that tannin, oak and dryness may be softer. That approach makes drinking less feel like choosing the right style, not settling for a generic imitation.
