What “non-toxic” can—and cannot—tell you
Dishwasher detergent is a mixture of builders, alkalinity agents, surfactants, enzymes and other additives. A label such as “non-toxic,” “plant-based” or “mineral-based” does not by itself establish that a formula is harmless in every exposure scenario, safe to ingest, or better at removing food. The useful question is narrower: what ingredients are disclosed, what screening or certification applies to this exact product, how is it packaged, and what evidence exists under comparable wash conditions?
Certification programs also answer different questions. EPA Safer Choice evaluates ingredients for potential human-health and environmental effects and compares chemicals within their functional classes. EWG Verified is a separate program with its own ingredient and concentration review. Neither label is a universal guarantee for every user, dose or use condition.

All three products below should be handled as concentrated cleaning chemicals: keep tablets or packs away from children and pets, avoid eye contact, and follow the appliance and package directions. “Fragrance-free” means no added fragrance is disclosed; it is not a medical promise for people with allergies or sensitivities.

Because an accessible, current comparison of these exact U.S. formulations is not available, it would be misleading to call one the best-performing tablet. Choose according to the evidence you value—ingredient and certification transparency, a fragrance-free formula, or a refill format—and verify the package currently sold in your region.
How the certifications should be interpreted
EPA Safer Choice
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Safer Choice and Design for the Environment Standard from November 2023 explains the label this way: “When you see the Safer Choice label on a product it means that the Safer Choice scientific review team has evaluated each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects and that—based on the best available experimental data and EPA predictive models—the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their functional class.”

That quotation describes the proposed 2023 standard, not a blanket statement that every product carrying the label is risk-free. Safer Choice is product-specific: check that the exact dishwasher detergent and current formulation are covered, rather than assuming a company-wide certification.

EWG Verified
EWG’s Green Llama record identifies the particular dishwasher tabs and says the formulation was reviewed when it was verified. The record reports that ingredient concentrations were below EWG’s health and safety limits at that time. EWG also cautions: “The ratings reflect potential health hazards but do not account for the level of exposure or individual susceptibility, factors which determine actual health risks, if any.”
That limitation matters for any concentrated detergent. A tablet that receives an ingredient-hazard review still needs to be kept out of the eyes and mouth and used only in a dishwasher. Verification is evidence about the reviewed formula and criteria, not a promise of zero risk in every household.
Cradle to Cradle and multiple labels
Blueland reports Cradle to Cradle certification in addition to EPA Safer Choice. Those labels address different parts of product stewardship and should not be collapsed into one “safe” score. Look for the certification name, the product covered, and the date or version of the listing. A label on a refill pouch, tablet, or pack may not automatically cover every size or regional formula.

Ingredient disclosure lets you understand the cleaning system without assuming that a familiar-sounding ingredient is harmless or that a synthetic ingredient is inherently dangerous. Builders soften hard-water minerals and support alkalinity; surfactants help detach soils; enzymes break down specific food residues; oxygen-based agents help with stains.

Green Llama formula
The EWG listing names sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium citrate, sodium metasilicate, polyitaconic acid, citric acid, TAED, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, amylase and protease. Amylase targets starch-based soils, while protease targets protein residues. Sodium percarbonate supplies an oxygen-based bleaching action; TAED helps activate that chemistry at lower wash temperatures. The listing is a disclosure of the reviewed formula, not a guarantee that every later production batch is identical, so compare the current package if the ingredient panel changes.
Seventh Generation Free & Clear formula
The manufacturer’s listing names sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, sodium sulfate, sodium percarbonate, surfactants, sodium polyaspartate, polyvinyl alcohol film, and protease and amylase blends. It says the packs are fragrance free and contain no chlorine bleach or phosphates. The film is part of the premeasured-pack format; it is not the same packaging choice as a bare tablet placed directly in the dispenser.
Blueland disclosure and testing claim
The manufacturer describes the tablets as fragrance-free and says they are independently tested to perform on dishware, glassware, silver and porcelain. That statement does not provide the test protocol, soil types, machine settings, water hardness, number of cycles or a score against Green Llama or Seventh Generation. Treat it as a manufacturer claim rather than an independent comparative result.
Tablet, pack or refill: the practical differences
Bare tablets
A bare tablet goes directly into the detergent compartment without an individual dissolvable film. Blueland’s reported refill system uses a reusable tin for storage. This can reduce the amount of single-use wrapping you handle, but the overall waste profile still depends on the refill material, shipping packaging and how often you reorder. Keep tablets dry: humidity can make them crumble or start dissolving before use.

Film-wrapped packs
Seventh Generation’s product is a premeasured pack with a polyvinyl alcohol film listed among its ingredients. The film is designed to dissolve during a wash cycle, while the pack helps prevent measuring errors and detergent dust. Do not cut open a pack or place it loose in the tub when the instructions specify the main dispenser cup; the dispenser controls when detergent is released.
Refill systems
A refill model can be convenient for households that want to reuse a storage container. Compare the refill material and shipping packaging, not only the tin. “Low waste” is a packaging claim, not a measured life-cycle result unless the company publishes a defined assessment. A product can have less primary packaging yet travel farther or arrive in additional shipping material.
What independent performance evidence actually shows
No accessible, current, comparable test identified a cleaning winner among the three U.S. products in the shortlist. That is the reason this guide does not rank one as the top performer.
Which? 2026 testing
Which? reported testing 15 dishwasher detergents in 2026: 12 tablets and three sheets. Its method included dried tea, spaghetti starch, egg yolk, milk and grease; checks for residue after washing; repeated-wash checks for glass cloudiness; and assessments of water marks and shine. Sustainability was also considered through product chemistry. The products were tested in April 2026, but detailed recommendations are member-only, and the sample is UK-oriented. It therefore does not establish a ranking for the U.S. Blueland, Green Llama or Seventh Generation products.

Association of Conscious Consumers laboratory report
The Association of Conscious Consumers report says 38 dishwasher tablets and gels were tested in an accredited laboratory, with 2,660 dishes washed. The report used a standardized soil and the same 55 °C program, weighting cleanliness at 50%, stain-free results at 30% and drying at 20%. It says eight of 12 EU Ecolabelled products scored above 90% and that the highest-ranked products were broadly similar in efficacy.
Those figures explain how a meaningful comparison can be designed, but they belong to that report’s products, market and test conditions. They cannot be transferred to the U.S. shortlist, and the report date was not confirmed in the available material. A fair ranking would need the exact current formulas, identical machine and water conditions, defined soils, repeated cycles and accessible scores.

- Confirm the exact product. Match the name, format and size on the package to the certification or ingredient record. A brand-level claim may not cover every regional formula.
- Read the current ingredient panel. Look for builders, oxygen bleach, surfactants and enzymes, and note preservatives, fragrance or dyes if listed. Save a photo of the label when you switch formulas.
- Decide whether fragrance-free matters to you. Blueland and Seventh Generation explicitly describe their listed products as fragrance-free. Green Llama’s cited EWG record does not establish a fragrance claim, so check the current label rather than infer one.
- Choose the format you can store safely. Bare tablets need dry storage; film-wrapped packs need intact packaging and the correct dispenser. A reusable tin is convenient only if it stays dry and closes securely.
- Check your water conditions. Hard water can leave mineral spots and reduce perceived cleaning. Seventh Generation recommends rinse aid in very hard water. Adjust rinse aid and dishwasher settings according to the appliance manual instead of adding extra detergent.
- Look for product-specific testing. Give more weight to a named independent test that identifies the exact formula, date, geography, soil types, water hardness, machine program and scoring. A general statement that a product was “tested” is not enough to compare it.
- Price the usable dose. Divide the package price by the number of cycles, then account for damaged tablets, half-load rules and any rinse aid you need. A lower price per package does not necessarily mean a lower cost per clean load.
Correct use and handling
Loading the dispenser
Blueland and Green Llama directions call for one tablet in the detergent compartment. Seventh Generation directs users to place one pack in the main dispenser cup. Close the cup fully; dropping detergent loose into the tub can release it too early and reduce cleaning.

Water and cycle settings
Use the cycle recommended for the soil level and cookware. Do not compensate for a short or overloaded cycle by adding a second tablet unless the package explicitly instructs you to do so. Extra detergent can leave residue and does not solve blocked spray arms, low water temperature or an overfilled rack.
Storage and first aid
Store all formats in their original, closed container in a cool, dry place. Do not transfer tablets or packs to an unmarked jar. Keep them away from children and pets. Green Llama’s product record specifically says to avoid eye contact and rinse eyes if exposure occurs; follow the package’s current first-aid language and contact a poison center or medical professional for urgent exposure advice.
Troubleshooting common results
Cloudy glasses or white film
- Check whether the residue is mineral scale, detergent film or permanent glass etching; the remedies differ.
- Verify rinse-aid settings and water-hardness settings in the dishwasher manual. Seventh Generation recommends rinse aid in very hard water.
- Use the correct detergent dose and avoid stacking extra products in the dispenser.
- Clean the filter and spray arms so water can reach every item and detergent can rinse away.
Greasy or starchy food remains
- Scrape large solids without fully pre-rinsing; enzymes need contact with food soils, but heavy deposits can overwhelm a short cycle.
- Check that the selected cycle reaches the temperature and duration required by the appliance manual.
- Rearrange items so spray jets are not blocked and the dispenser door can open.
- If the problem persists, compare a different detergent format or formula for several controlled loads rather than changing multiple variables at once.
Tablet or pack not dissolving
- Inspect the dispenser for a blocked door or caked detergent.
- Keep tablets and packs dry before use; humidity can cause premature softening.
- Make sure the dishwasher fills with water and reaches the spray arms.
- Never unwrap a film pack unless its instructions say to do so, and never use a damaged product.
Claims that should not decide your purchase by themselves
- “Plant-based” or “mineral-based”: origin does not predict cleaning power or hazard without a full formula and exposure context.
- “Plastic-free”: verify whether the claim covers the tablet, film, refill pouch and shipping materials.
- “Enzyme-rich”: enzymes can target proteins or starches, but their presence does not prove superior results in your machine and water.
- “Certified”: identify the certifier, the exact product and the scope of review.
- “Independently tested”: ask whether the method and comparative results are public. Without them, the statement cannot support a ranking.
Bottom line: which one fits which priority?
Choose Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets if a fragrance-free tablet, refill storage and multiple reported certifications are your priorities, while recognizing that the cited performance statement is not a public head-to-head score. Choose Green Llama Dishwasher Tabs if you want an EWG Verified product record with a detailed listed formula and explicit handling warnings; verify the current label and do not treat the rating as a no-risk guarantee. Choose Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dishwasher Detergent Packs if you prefer a fragrance-free, premeasured pack with an EPA Safer Choice listing and public ingredients, and you are comfortable with a film-wrapped format.
For any of them, the most reliable decision process is the same: match the current formula to the certification, use the instructed dose in the main dispenser, account for water hardness and machine loading, and judge cleaning after several comparable loads. Until an accessible independent test covers these exact U.S. products under the same conditions, the honest distinction is transparency and format—not a proven performance ranking.
