The best Nintendo Switch Online games depend on the kind of play you enjoy, the membership tier you have, and whether you play on Switch or Switch 2. For a strong starting point, try Super Mario Bros. 3 for classic platforming, Super Mario World for a Super NES-era adventure, Super Mario 64 for a landmark 3D platformer, or Golden Sun if you want a role-playing game and have Expansion Pack access. These are editorial picks, not an official ranking or a confirmed list of recommendations from Game Scoop! episode 874.
Which Nintendo Switch Online games are worth playing?
Start with the games that fit your preferred genre, then check that your membership and hardware include the relevant library. Older games can be rewarding, but their controls and design may feel different from modern releases; the best choice is the one whose style appeals to you.

For classic 2D platforming: Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a standout starting point in the NES collection. GameSpot singles it out as the one NES collection game to play if choosing only one, citing its enduring platforming and influence on the series. It suits players who enjoy clear stages, precise jumps, and a classic 2D format. GameSpot’s Nintendo Switch Online game recommendations offer further context for this editorial pick.

For a Super NES platformer: Super Mario World
Super Mario World is a strong option if you want a more expansive-feeling 2D platformer from the Super NES era. Gaming.net highlights its platforming and technical presentation, making it a useful counterpoint to the NES-era starting point. Gaming.net’s classic Nintendo game recommendations discuss the title.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
For a step into 3D: Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 is worth considering for its place in the history of 3D platforming. It may be less appealing if you expect the precise, modern camera and controls of a recent game, so approach it as a chance to experience an influential Nintendo 64 design rather than a direct substitute for a current 3D platformer. Gaming.net includes it among its recommendations.
For an RPG: Golden Sun
Golden Sun is a genre-diverse choice for players who prefer a role-playing game to platforming. Gaming.net recommends it as a Game Boy Advance RPG. That library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
What games are included with Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo’s classic-game libraries are divided by membership tier. The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games. GameCube – Nintendo Classics is also an Expansion Pack benefit, but it is available only on Nintendo Switch 2. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service page for the current benefits and eligibility.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
That means the four recommendations above span different access requirements: Super Mario Bros. 3 is in the NES library, Super Mario World is in the Super NES library, and Super Mario 64 is in the Nintendo 64 library, which requires Expansion Pack. Golden Sun is in the Game Boy Advance library, also requiring Expansion Pack.
For the specific game you have in mind, confirm its availability in your region and on your device. Nintendo’s catalog changes over time, and regional catalogs can differ. Nintendo Life’s September 2026 catalog guide reports 210 standard-tier games and 348 Expansion Pack games, or 359 when Switch 2-exclusive GameCube titles are included. These are Nintendo Life inventory counts, not Nintendo-published statistics, and are subject to change. The guide also notes that its counts exclude certain Japan-only releases and special versions. Check Nintendo Life’s catalog guide alongside Nintendo’s current service information.
Do you need Expansion Pack for Nintendo 64 games?
Yes. Nintendo 64 classics are part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not the standard membership. Expansion Pack also adds Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis libraries. GameCube classics have the additional requirement of a Nintendo Switch 2 system; an Expansion Pack membership alone does not make that library available on the original Switch.

How membership affects playing the classics
An active membership is required
Nintendo Support says access to classic games requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The subscription is therefore part of access to the service’s classic libraries, not simply a one-time purchase of individual games. Review Nintendo Support’s Nintendo Classics FAQ for current access details.

Offline play requires periodic verification
You can play classic games offline, but Nintendo Support says the system must verify your membership online at least once every seven days. If you expect to be away from an internet connection for longer, connect the system before leaving so it can complete that check.
Online multiplayer is limited to games with original multiplayer features
When a classic game includes multiplayer in its original release, Nintendo’s collections can support those features online. Nintendo Support says this play is with friends; the collections do not offer random matchmaking. Whether online play is useful therefore depends on the particular game and whether you have friends ready to join.

- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Save and restore features vary
Convenience features such as save and restore are game-specific. Check the controls and options in the relevant classic-game application rather than assuming every title handles saving in the same way.
How to choose the right classic for you
- Choose by genre: Try the Mario platformers for 2D or 3D action, or Golden Sun for an RPG.
- Match the game to your membership: NES, Super NES, and Game Boy are in the standard libraries; the additional systems listed above require Expansion Pack.
- Check your hardware: GameCube classics require Switch 2 as well as Expansion Pack.
- Consider your tolerance for period design: Older controls, camera behavior, and game conventions can feel unfamiliar. A historical classic may be more enjoyable when you approach it on its own terms.
- Check the current regional catalog: The lineup changes, and Nintendo does not publish a fixed schedule for new additions.
Nintendo Support puts the release cadence plainly: “There is no set schedule for new releases, but each collection will continue to grow.” That makes the current catalog, rather than a promised release date, the reliable way to decide what you can play now.
