If you want to explore an open world and Pokémon is your starting point, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the closest fit for field exploration and catching. Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want a broad world with the familiar mainline focus on catching, battling, and training. For an adventure without Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom put exploration, discovery, and puzzles at the center.
Which open-world Switch game best fits the kind of Pokémon fan you are?
| If you want… | Best fit | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| To explore like a Pokémon field researcher | Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Survey Hisui, observe and catch Pokémon, and complete field research that contributes to progression and opens more survey areas. Official Pokémon game page |
| A broad world with the familiar mainline Pokémon loop | Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet | Explore Paldea while catching, battling, and training Pokémon, with travel by Koraidon in Scarlet or Miraidon in Violet. Official Pokémon game page |
| Exploration and puzzles in a world beyond Pokémon | The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Survey Hyrule, climb to new viewpoints, and solve shrine puzzles. Official Nintendo game page |
| A Hyrule adventure that adds sky-island exploration | The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Explore sprawling landscapes and floating islands, choosing your own path through the adventure. Official Nintendo game page |
“Open world” describes different play styles here, not one shared formula. The deciding questions are whether catching is central or incidental, whether you prefer survey areas or a broad connected world, and whether you want Pokémon battles, environmental puzzles, or both.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the exploration-first Pokémon choice
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the strongest match if the appeal of Pokémon is discovering creatures in the field as much as building a team. Its official description centers on exploring Hisui, catching Pokémon, and completing the Pokédex. Field research is part of progression, and completing it opens additional survey areas.

That makes it a natural choice for players who want to observe and approach Pokémon while exploring, rather than treating travel mainly as the route between familiar battles. Its exploration is organized around survey areas, so it is a different structure from a single uninterrupted open world.
#1 Best Overall
- Revisit the Sinnoh region from the original Pokémon Pearl Version game and set off to try and become the Champion of the Pokémon League
- The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet keep the mainline Pokémon loop in a wide-open world
Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want open-world travel without leaving the core premise of catching, battling, and training Pokémon. The games take place in Paldea, and the player travels by a Legendary Pokémon: Koraidon in Scarlet and Miraidon in Violet. Play Nintendo describes travel across land, water, and air and says players can explore the world at their own pace; that is the publisher’s description of the game, not an independent assessment. Play Nintendo’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet announcement.
The key distinction from Legends: Arceus is what you want exploration to support. Pick Scarlet or Violet for the familiar mainline Pokémon activities in a wide-open setting; pick Legends: Arceus when field observation and research are the draw.
Rank #2
- Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
- Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
Breath of the Wild is the pick for exploration outside Pokémon
If what you love is discovering places rather than collecting Pokémon specifically, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offers a different kind of adventure. Nintendo highlights surveying Hyrule, climbing, and shrine puzzles. Exploration and environmental challenges take the place of catching and training creatures, so it suits players ready to trade the Pokémon loop for traversal and discovery.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is another option if you want a large adventure beyond Pokémon. Nintendo describes broad landscapes and floating sky islands, with the freedom to choose your own route. Consider it when open-ended discovery and changing where you go matter more than Pokémon collection.
Rank #3
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
How to choose between them
- Choose Legends: Arceus if catching, observing, and researching Pokémon in the field is the main attraction.
- Choose Scarlet or Violet if you want Paldea exploration alongside the familiar catch-battle-train premise.
- Choose Breath of the Wild if climbing, surveying, and solving environmental puzzles sound appealing without Pokémon.
- Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want a self-directed Hyrule journey that includes floating sky islands.
These are fit-based recommendations, not a measured ranking. The official descriptions establish the activities each game emphasizes; they do not establish a universal best game for every Pokémon fan.
