Best Nintendo Switch Games for Players Who Love Hidden Gems

There is no single most underrated Nintendo Switch game. A hidden gem is a distinctive game that is easy to overlook in a crowded eShop, not necessarily a title with the fewest players or the highest review score. The right choice depends on the kind of play you want: a repeatable card run, a quiet exploration walk, a compact puzzle adventure, a comedy built around decisions, a story-led mystery, or demanding boss fights.

This guide groups strong candidates by that experience. Nintendo’s April 30, 2024 roundup describes games that may have slipped under players’ radar, while Nintendo Life notes that “hidden gem” is often overused. Each recommendation below has a specific reason to be on your shortlist, plus a clear reason you might want to skip it.

How to use this hidden-gem guide

Think of the list as a set of taste matches rather than a ranking. Balatro and Astral Ascent can keep you returning for challenge, while A Short Hike and Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley are better suited to an unhurried evening. The Touryst and Planet Alpha sit between exploration and puzzles. Lil Guardsman and Pentiment put more weight on writing, choices, and atmosphere than on reflexes.

Review scores are opinions from individual outlets, not universal measures of quality. Nintendo Life’s broader hidden-gems guide says its featured selections received 9/10 from that outlet; that statement applies to the guide’s featured list and should not be treated as a population statistic or automatically assigned to every game named here.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Strategic runs and deck-building

Balatro: for poker-style strategy and endless experimentation

Balatro turns poker hands into the foundation of a roguelike deck-builder. You build combinations, select Jokers that modify how hands score, and try to make each run stronger than the last. Nintendo describes the game around poker hands, Jokers, and synergies, which makes the appeal easy to understand even if you have never played a traditional deck-building game.

The best fit is a player who enjoys learning a system, spotting interactions, and accepting that a run can collapse because of one poor decision. Its repeatable-run structure gives it a very different rhythm from a one-and-done story game: you are constantly testing a new combination rather than simply moving to the next chapter. The digital Nintendo Switch edition in Nintendo’s U.S. store lists a February 20, 2024 release date.

Skip Balatro if you want a guided narrative, real-time action, or a game that explains every strategic consequence before you commit. Its pleasure comes from experimentation, and some players will find the probability and restart loop more absorbing than relaxing. It is also a poor match if poker imagery or card-based scoring is an immediate turnoff.

Exploration and puzzle-led adventures

A Short Hike: gentle discovery at your own pace

A Short Hike is built around a simple objective—reach the summit of Hawk Peak Provincial Park—but the route is yours to shape. Nintendo’s description highlights hiking, climbing, swimming, fishing, hidden treasures, and multiple paths through the park. Those activities make the journey feel open without requiring a huge map or a punishing checklist.

Choose it when you want a warm, low-pressure adventure that rewards curiosity. You can follow the obvious trail, wander toward a side path, or stop to fish and explore before continuing upward. The game’s gentle tone makes it a strong palate cleanser after a difficult action game and an approachable first recommendation for someone who does not usually play indie titles.

Players looking for complex puzzles, combat, or dozens of hours of progression may find it too slight. The Nintendo U.S. store lists a digital Switch edition released August 18, 2020. Store listings, prices, and edition formats can change by region, so check the current page for your account country before buying.

The Touryst: a compact island mix of puzzles and minigames

The Touryst presents an island adventure that combines exploration, puzzles, and minigames. Nintendo Life’s guide lists its Switch release date as November 21, 2019 and praises its exploratory atmosphere and puzzle balance. That praise is an editorial judgment, so treat it as a clue about tone rather than a promise that every player will agree.

This is a good choice when you want a brisk adventure with several kinds of activity in one package. You can investigate the island, look for the next puzzle, and break up traversal with small diversions instead of spending the entire game in one mechanical mode. Its compact structure is useful for players who prefer a focused destination to an enormous open world.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Skip it if you need deep character development, a long-term progression system, or a single genre pursued with maximum complexity. The Touryst’s variety is the point, and that variety may feel lightweight to someone seeking a serious simulation or an extended role-playing campaign.

Planet Alpha: stealth, platforming, and environmental puzzles

Planet Alpha combines puzzle-platforming, stealth, and exploration. Nintendo Life’s guide lists a September 4, 2018 Switch release date and identifies those three elements as its defining tools. The result is aimed at players who like reading an environment, finding a safe route, and using timing rather than simply running from left to right.

Pick Planet Alpha when you want a visually driven journey in which movement and observation matter equally. Stealth sections give the platforming a different cadence: you may pause to study a threat, then commit to a short sequence of movement. The exploration component adds a sense of place without turning the game into a collectathon by default.

It is less suitable for players who dislike sneaking, trial-and-error sequences, or games that communicate through scenery more than dialogue. Nintendo Life’s assessment is an outlet’s opinion, so use the mechanics as your decision point rather than assuming its recommendation is universal.

Comedy and story choices

Lil Guardsman: decide who gets through the gate

Lil Guardsman places you in a comedic fantasy job with an unusually direct responsibility: question visitors and decide whether to admit them, deny them, or zap them. Nintendo’s roundup frames the game around those judgments, making it a natural fit for players who enjoy humorous decision-making and the consequences of a conversation.

The appeal is role-play through small calls rather than combat mastery. You listen to a visitor’s case, weigh what you have learned, and choose the response that seems funniest, safest, or most useful. That setup gives the game a clear identity among Switch adventures: the central verb is evaluating people, not defeating them.

Choose something else if you want precise platforming, a deck-building system, or a serious fantasy epic. Its comedy will also be subjective; a joke-heavy premise can be delightful for one player and exhausting for another. Treat the tone as the main buying decision.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley: a restorative, music-led adventure

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is a story-rich adventure about restoring nature in Moominvalley. Nintendo also notes that its music was made in collaboration with Icelandic band Sigur Rós. That combination points to an experience driven by atmosphere, characters, and a sense of place rather than score chasing or combat escalation.

Rank #3
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

It suits players who want a calm narrative with a clear restorative purpose. The environmental theme gives your progress an immediate emotional shape: you are helping return a damaged valley to a healthier state. The licensed collaboration is an added attraction for listeners who value distinctive sound design and music-forward presentation.

Skip it if your ideal Switch game is a high-difficulty action run or a system-heavy strategy challenge. A story-rich structure also means that players who prefer to make every decision themselves may find the authored presentation less flexible than a choice-driven game such as Lil Guardsman.

Pentiment: a historical mystery centered on an artist

Pentiment is set in sixteenth-century Europe and follows artist Andreas Maler through murders, scandals, and intrigue. Nintendo describes it as a historical mystery, so the core pleasure is investigating people, institutions, and motives over time rather than clearing combat arenas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Pentiment when you enjoy deliberate reading, social observation, and a setting with carefully drawn historical detail. Andreas’s profession gives the story a distinctive viewpoint: art, reputation, and access to information all shape how the mystery unfolds. It is an especially strong match for players who want their next Switch game to feel like an illustrated novel with meaningful investigation.

It is not the right pick for someone seeking immediate action, constant rewards, or a short sequence of independent puzzles. The historical setting and dialogue-heavy structure ask for attention, and the satisfaction comes from following threads and interpreting people rather than from mechanical speed.

Action and boss-focused play

Astral Ascent: four heroes and twelve bosses

Astral Ascent is an action game set in a prison-world. Nintendo’s description identifies four playable heroes and twelve bosses, giving the game a clear focus on character choice, combat encounters, and repeated attempts to overcome major fights.

It is a fit for players who like learning attack patterns, switching between heroes, and measuring progress against demanding bosses. The four-character setup gives you a reason to experiment with different approaches instead of treating one build as the only correct answer. A prison-world setting also supplies a strong dramatic frame for a game whose moment-to-moment appeal is action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip Astral Ascent if you want a quiet exploration game, a purely narrative mystery, or a forgiving experience with little repetition. Boss-focused action can feel exhilarating when you enjoy practice and frustrating when you would rather see the story advance after one attempt.

More overlooked Switch games to investigate

Nintendo Life’s broader guide also names Bad North, Ape Out, Armello, Sky Rogue, Aegis Defenders, and Hand of Fate 2. The guide explains that many of its selections were lost among waves of eShop releases. Those names are useful leads if the eight primary recommendations do not match your taste, but the available material here does not establish a shared genre, playtime, multiplayer mode, or current edition for all six.

Read each individual review before buying rather than transferring the guide’s 9/10 outlet score to every title. A score summarizes one publication’s judgment at a particular time; it cannot tell you whether a game’s mood, difficulty, or control style suits your household.

Choose by the moment you want to have

For a short, calming session

Start with A Short Hike if you want to wander, collect small discoveries, and stop whenever you like. Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is the alternative when you want a more directed story and a stronger music-and-character focus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game you can revisit repeatedly

Balatro is the clearest choice because its roguelike deck-building structure is explicitly built around repeatable runs. Astral Ascent is the better alternative if your preferred repetition is practicing combat and bosses rather than refining card combinations.

For puzzles with a sense of place

The Touryst offers a compact island setting with puzzles and minigames. Planet Alpha is the more demanding option when you want stealth and platforming to be part of the problem-solving process.

For writing and decisions

Pick Lil Guardsman for comic judgment calls and Pentiment for a slower historical mystery. Snufkin sits between them: it is story-rich, but its central motivation is restoring a natural environment rather than interrogating a cast about a crime.

Switch availability, editions, and regional checks

Nintendo’s U.S. store identifies Balatro and A Short Hike as digital Nintendo Switch editions. The listed release dates are February 20, 2024 for Balatro and August 18, 2020 for A Short Hike. Nintendo Life’s guide lists November 21, 2019 for The Touryst and September 4, 2018 for Planet Alpha on Switch.

Those details do not establish that every recommendation has a physical cartridge, the same price, or the same edition in every country. Nintendo’s Indie World catalog changes, and regional storefronts can show different availability, prices, and formats. Before purchasing, open the Nintendo eShop page for your account region and confirm:

  • That the listing is compatible with your Nintendo Switch model and account region.
  • Whether the edition is digital, physical, or both.
  • The current price and any temporary sale terms.
  • The language, age rating, and storage requirement shown on your regional product page.

Older roundup inclusion is not proof that a game is currently popular, in stock, or discounted. Treat the roundup and guide as discovery tools, then use the live regional listing for the transaction details.

A practical shortlist

  1. Choose Balatro if you want the deepest repeatable strategy loop.
  2. Choose A Short Hike for gentle, open-ended exploration.
  3. Choose The Touryst for a compact island adventure mixing puzzles and minigames.
  4. Choose Planet Alpha for stealthy puzzle-platforming.
  5. Choose Lil Guardsman for comedy built around admitting, denying, or zapping visitors.
  6. Choose Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley for a restorative, music-led story.
  7. Choose Pentiment for a patient historical mystery.
  8. Choose Astral Ascent for action, multiple heroes, and twelve boss encounters.

The best hidden gem is therefore the one whose defining activity matches your mood. These games are overlooked for different reasons, and that variety is exactly why a taste-led shortlist is more useful than declaring one universal winner.
