For most docked players, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the best controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Its full-size shape and conventional two-stick layout are better suited to long sessions, time trials and precise menu navigation than a sideways Joy-Con. Choose a Joy-Con with a wheel attachment for motion-steering parties, a GameCube controller and adapter if you already prefer that classic layout, or the HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe if you want a larger mounted wheel.
The right choice depends less on claimed racing advantage than on hand size, steering preference, number of local players and whether you use an original Switch or Switch 2. No authoritative source here publishes controller latency, comfort scores or current prices, so the recommendations below are based on documented compatibility, form factor and setup requirements rather than unverified performance claims.

Quick answer: which controller should you buy?
| Controller | Best for | Steering method | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Most solo players, time trials and long docked sessions | Two analog sticks; optional motion controls | Nintendo lists it as supported by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; one controller serves one player. |
| Joy-Con plus Joy-Con Wheel | Families, guests and motion-steering parties | Tilt the horizontal Joy-Con | Inexpensive stations for local multiplayer, but the wheel is an attachment. Nintendo’s compatibility table marks the Joy-Con Wheel incompatible with Switch 2. |
| GameCube controller plus Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter | Players who already like the GameCube shape and button layout | Analog stick and buttons; wired adapter connection | Supported on Switch consoles with system menu version 5.0.0 or newer; requires the adapter and a wired setup. |
| HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe | Immersive living-room wheel setups | Full-size mounted wheel | More substantial than a Joy-Con attachment, but takes space and is a specialist purchase. Verify the exact model’s console compatibility. |
If you are buying one controller without a specific gimmick in mind, choose the Pro Controller. If several people will race in the same room, count controller stations first: each racer needs a complete controller, not merely a second grip or wheel shell.
How to choose a controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Five practical questions separate these options more reliably than marketing claims:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Comfort over time: A full-size pad generally gives your hands more room than a sideways Joy-Con. A wheel can feel natural for short party races but needs a comfortable seating position and storage space.
- Precision and layout: The Pro Controller uses the familiar two-stick arrangement. The GameCube pad has its own stick travel and button geometry. A horizontal Joy-Con is compact, with fewer buttons immediately available.
- Motion steering: Joy-Con Wheels are built around tilt steering. A conventional pad lets you use sticks and can still support motion features where the game and controller allow them.
- Local multiplayer: One Pro Controller is one player’s station. Several sideways Joy-Cons can turn a console into a party setup, provided every player has a Joy-Con and a suitable attachment if desired.
- Setup complexity: Wireless pairing is simplest with Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons. GameCube play adds a wired adapter; a dedicated wheel adds physical space and model-compatibility checks.
Nintendo’s support information explicitly lists Joy-Con held horizontally and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That confirms basic game support, not that one pad makes a racer faster. The only comfort observation in the supplied evidence is an independent Nintendo Life review describing the sideways Joy-Con as “a bit cramped for our taste”; treat that as a reviewer experience, not a measured specification.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: best overall
Why it is the default recommendation
The Pro Controller is the clearest fit for a player who spends most races on a television or monitor. Its full-size hand feel gives each thumb a dedicated stick and leaves the face buttons easy to reach without balancing a tiny controller sideways. That makes it suitable for Grand Prix cups, time trials, online races and long sessions in which you do not want to grip a narrow Joy-Con.
Nintendo lists the Pro Controller as a supported controller for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It is also the least complicated choice here: pair it wirelessly, select it when the game asks for a controller, and race with the standard stick-based layout. The recommendation is about ergonomics and documented compatibility; there is no controlled evidence that it changes lap times or steering accuracy compared with another properly functioning controller.
Who should choose it
- Solo players who want one comfortable, conventional pad.
- Racers who use manual drift, time trials or online play and prefer two analog sticks.
- Anyone who finds a sideways Joy-Con too small or cramped.
- Players who move between handheld and docked play but want a full-size pad whenever the console is docked.
What to plan for
A Pro Controller is a one-player device. Two people racing locally need two complete compatible controllers; buying one Pro Controller does not make the console ready for a four-player session. If your household regularly hosts guests, you may want one Pro Controller for the primary player and Joy-Cons for additional stations, subject to the Switch-generation limitation described below.
Basic setup
- Wake the Switch and open Controllers from the HOME menu.
- Select Change Grip/Order.
- Hold the Pro Controller’s sync button until the player LEDs begin cycling, then wait for it to appear.
- Press the controller’s shoulder buttons when the console requests confirmation.
- Start Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and choose the player slot associated with that controller.
Menu wording can vary slightly by system software language, but the HOME-menu path is the relevant place to pair or reorder controllers.

Joy-Con plus Joy-Con Wheel: best for motion-steering parties
What the wheel changes
A Joy-Con Wheel is a plastic steering-wheel attachment that holds one Joy-Con horizontally. The wheel gives each player a visible steering shape while the Joy-Con supplies the electronics and motion sensor. Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions tell players to select the Joy-Con Wheel option when using a wheel attachment with a horizontal Joy-Con.
This arrangement is especially effective when several people are taking turns, when children or guests understand a wheel shape faster than a gamepad, or when the fun comes from tilting rather than learning analog-stick steering. Nintendo sells a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Racing Wheel Mario Edition and describes it as a “full-sized premium racing wheel attachment.” It remains an attachment, not a self-contained controller: every player still needs a compatible Joy-Con.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSwitch versus Switch 2 compatibility
Check the console generation before buying. Nintendo’s Switch/Switch 2 compatibility table marks the Joy-Con Wheel as not compatible with Switch 2. The same table lists the Pro Controller and Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter as compatible hardware. Therefore, a wheel bundle that makes sense for an original Switch should not be assumed to work on Switch 2; confirm the exact accessory and console combination first.
Advantages and limitations
- Advantages: compact storage, familiar tilt-to-steer interaction, and an easy way to create several inexpensive-looking racing stations.
- Limitations: a sideways Joy-Con offers less physical room than a full-size pad; the wheel does not add buttons or processing power; and Switch 2 owners cannot use the Joy-Con Wheel according to Nintendo’s compatibility table.
- Ergonomics: Nintendo Life’s independent review called the sideways Joy-Con “a bit cramped for our taste.” That is a subjective observation, so hand size and session length matter.
How to configure a wheel
- Slide one Joy-Con firmly into the wheel attachment, matching the controller’s buttons with the attachment’s openings.
- From the HOME menu, open Controllers and choose Change Grip/Order.
- For each player, hold the horizontal Joy-Con’s SL and SR buttons to register it as a sideways controller.
- Launch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and select the Joy-Con Wheel control option when the multiplayer setup screen appears.
- Test steering in a practice race before starting a cup, especially if several players are using different wheel attachments.
Keep the wheel attachment aligned with the Joy-Con and avoid pressing the small shoulder buttons through a loose fit. If a player prefers sticks, remove the wheel and register the Joy-Con in the grip or another supported orientation instead.
GameCube controller plus adapter: best for a legacy layout
Why choose this route
The GameCube controller has a distinctive central analog stick, large primary face button and familiar shoulder controls. For players who already use that layout, it can feel more natural than learning a Pro Controller or a horizontal Joy-Con. It is a specialist choice rather than the universal recommendation because it depends on a wired adapter and the availability of a suitable GameCube pad.

Nintendo support says GameCube controllers work on Nintendo Switch consoles running system menu version 5.0.0 or higher. Nintendo’s Switch/Switch 2 compatibility table lists the Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter as compatible hardware. Those are compatibility conditions, not a promise that every third-party cable, hub or controller revision will behave identically.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What you need
- A GameCube controller.
- The Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter.
- A Switch dock or compatible connection point for the adapter.
- System menu version 5.0.0 or newer on a supported Switch console.
Connection steps
- Update the console so its system menu is at least version 5.0.0.
- Place the Switch in its dock and connect the GameCube Controller Adapter to the dock’s USB ports.
- Plug the GameCube controller into a numbered adapter port.
- Open Controllers and select Change Grip/Order if the controller is not detected automatically.
- Choose the controller slot in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and test every required button before beginning a race.
The adapter route is less convenient than wireless controllers: cables can cross a coffee table, and adding players means adding controller ports and pads. Its appeal is the layout itself, not extra documented performance.
HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe: best dedicated wheel
The HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe targets players who want a larger, mounted wheel rather than a small attachment around a Joy-Con. A substantial wheel can make a living-room setup feel more like a racing station and gives wheel enthusiasts a physical control surface designed for repeated use.
When it makes sense
- You have a fixed television setup with room for a wheel and its mounting hardware.
- You value the physical wheel experience more than compact storage.
- You are willing to verify the exact model, included cables and console compatibility before purchase.
Trade-offs
This is a specialist accessory. It occupies more space than a Pro Controller, is less convenient to carry between rooms, and may be excessive if you mostly use standard stick controls. The supplied evidence does not establish a latency advantage, comfort score or current price, so select it for its format and immersion rather than an assumed racing edge.
Before connecting it, check the model’s instructions for the required Switch mode, USB connection and supported console generation. Do not assume that a similarly named wheel has identical compatibility.

Comparison by use case
| Your situation | Best starting point | Reason | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One person playing docked most evenings | Pro Controller | Full-size, conventional layout with documented Nintendo support | You will need another full controller for a second racer. |
| Family party with several occasional players on an original Switch | Horizontal Joy-Cons with Joy-Con Wheels | Simple tilt steering and multiple compact stations | Sideways Joy-Cons can feel cramped; every station needs a Joy-Con. |
| Switch 2 owner who wants a wheel shape | Check alternatives before buying | Nintendo’s table marks the Joy-Con Wheel incompatible with Switch 2 | Use the Pro Controller or a listed compatible setup instead. |
| Longtime GameCube player | GameCube controller plus adapter | Preserves the familiar button and stick arrangement | Requires system menu 5.0.0 or newer and a wired adapter. |
| Dedicated wheel enthusiast with permanent space | HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe | Larger mounted wheel than a Joy-Con attachment | Confirm exact model and console compatibility; allow room for mounting. |
Planning local multiplayer
Start with the number of racers, then assign one complete controller to each person. A four-player session can use four sideways Joy-Cons on an original Switch, four Pro Controllers, or a mixture of supported devices. A wheel attachment does not count as an additional player because it only houses a Joy-Con.
For guests, label each Joy-Con or adapter port before opening the game. Pair or register every controller from Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then enter the multiplayer mode and verify that each player can accelerate, brake, steer and use items. Doing this before selecting a cup prevents a missing controller from interrupting the race.
If players have different preferences, combine formats deliberately: the main player can use a Pro Controller while guests use horizontal Joy-Cons. The game supports the documented controller types, but the physical feel will differ, so allow a short practice race rather than changing settings during a tournament.
Long-session comfort and maintenance
For extended cups or repeated time trials, the Pro Controller’s full-size grip is the safest general choice because it avoids the narrow sideways hold. Keep wrists neutral, rest the controller when waiting in menus and rotate players during parties. A wheel attachment can reduce the feeling of holding a tiny rectangle, but it does not enlarge the Joy-Con’s buttons or change its underlying control layout.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe content and controller choice
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can contain 96 races when the Booster Course Pass content is included. Nintendo’s update support information identifies this figure with version 3.0.5, released May 21, 2025. More tracks mean longer evenings and more repeated cups, which is why comfort and reliable setup matter more than a novelty control scheme for many players.
The number of courses does not change controller compatibility. It simply gives you more time to notice whether a compact grip, wired cable or large wheel fits your room and hands.
Troubleshooting common controller problems
The game does not see a controller
- Return to the HOME menu and open Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Re-pair the wireless controller or press the correct SL and SR buttons for a sideways Joy-Con.
- Close and reopen the game if the controller was connected after the game started.
- For a GameCube pad, confirm the adapter is connected to the dock and that the console meets the 5.0.0 system-menu requirement.
A Joy-Con wheel steers incorrectly
Remove and reseat the Joy-Con, register it horizontally again, and select the Joy-Con Wheel option in the multiplayer setup. Check that the wheel is not rotated while the game calibrates motion steering. On Switch 2, do not troubleshoot indefinitely: Nintendo’s compatibility table lists the Joy-Con Wheel as incompatible, so use a supported controller instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Players are assigned to the wrong slots
Open Change Grip/Order, register controllers in the desired sequence, and then enter the game’s multiplayer menu. If one player changes from a wheel to a Pro Controller, repeat the registration so the game receives the new orientation.
A wired GameCube setup is inconvenient
Use the adapter only for players who specifically want the GameCube layout. Keep wireless controllers available for guests, and place the dock where the adapter cable can reach without crossing a walkway. The adapter’s value is its familiar control arrangement, not portability.
Final buying decision
Buy the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for the broadest mix of comfort, simple setup and documented support. Choose Joy-Con Wheels when motion steering and group play are the point—and only after checking that you use an original Switch rather than Switch 2. Choose a GameCube controller with adapter when you already love that legacy layout and accept cables. Choose the HORI Mario Kart Racing Wheel Pro Deluxe when a permanent, larger wheel setup matters more than compactness.
