Best Nintendo Switch Co-op Shooters to Play Instead of Hypercharge: Unboxed

Choose Splatoon 3 if you want colorful third-person team shooting with a recurring four-player horde mode. Choose Borderlands Legendary Collection if you want conventional first-person gunplay, campaign co-op and long-term loot progression. Neither duplicates every part of Hypercharge: Unboxed: Hypercharge remains the closest match for four-player split-screen or online wave defense.

The right substitute depends on which part of Hypercharge matters most to you: its local setup, its defensive waves, its toy-scale presentation, or its shooting and progression. The comparison below separates those needs so you can buy the game that actually fits your group.

At a glance: which Switch shooter fits your group?

Game Perspective and feel Co-op structure Local-play reality Best match for Main qualification
Hypercharge: Unboxed First- and third-person shooting in a toy-defense setting Four-player local or online co-op focused on wave-based tower defense Officially supports split-screen/local co-op Players who want the closest overall structure It is the baseline, not an alternative
Splatoon 3 Colorful third-person ink shooting and territory battles Team-based matches plus Salmon Run wave co-op Each player needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch and a copy of the game for multiplayer Groups that value team coordination and an ongoing horde mode Do not treat it as same-console split-screen co-op
Borderlands Legendary Collection Conventional first-person shooter with RPG-style loot progression Campaign co-op across three Borderlands games Confirm the exact edition and region before promising a couch setup Players who want story missions, shooting and loot Requires a download of at least 49 GB; online features and Save Data Cloud have Nintendo Switch Online requirements where specified

That table captures the decisive trade-off. Splatoon 3 replaces Hypercharge’s defensive toy setting with ink-based team play and Salmon Run. Borderlands replaces wave defense with campaign missions and a shooter-looter progression loop. Hypercharge is still the only one in this comparison whose official Nintendo listing explicitly combines first- and third-person play, four-player local/online co-op and wave-based tower defense.

What Hypercharge: Unboxed sets as the baseline

Nintendo’s official eShop description calls Hypercharge: Unboxed a “Cooperative First and Third-Person Shooter including Multiplayer (Split-screen/Online) with Wave based Tower Defense mechanics.” It also says players can “Squad up with 3 other players in Online / Local Co-op and save the HYPER-CORE from total annihilation.” In practical terms, that gives a group of up to four a choice between playing together on one console through split-screen or connecting online, while defending an objective through enemy waves.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That combination is unusually specific. Many console shooters offer online campaigns but not same-console split-screen; others have a horde playlist but no story or objective-defense identity. Hypercharge also lets players switch between first- and third-person viewpoints, which changes how the toy-scale environments and defensive positions read during a match.

Use those characteristics as your checklist when judging an alternative:

  • Four players on one console: the official listing explicitly identifies split-screen/local co-op.
  • Online group play: the same listing identifies online co-op with three other players.
  • Wave defense: the core activity is protecting the HYPER-CORE rather than simply racing through a campaign.
  • Viewpoint choice: first- and third-person shooting are both part of the stated design.

No single alternative below preserves all four. The useful question is which elements your group is willing to exchange.

Splatoon 3: the best choice for team shooting and a recurring horde mode

Why it is the closest thematic alternative

Splatoon 3 is not a military FPS and does not recreate Hypercharge’s toy-defense structure. It is a colorful third-person shooter built around ink-slinging team battles. Nintendo describes its headline multiplayer as 4-on-4 action, so the emphasis is on coordinated territory control and movement rather than aiming down a conventional firearm in first person.

The strongest point of overlap is Salmon Run. Nintendo describes it as a cooperative mode in which players collect Golden Eggs while fending off invading Salmonids. Nintendo’s launch news says Salmon Run is available 24/7 and that a group of four players defeats waves of Salmonids and collects Golden Eggs. That gives Splatoon 3 a persistent wave-based objective and a full team of four, even though the objective, weapons and presentation differ substantially from defending the HYPER-CORE.

What a Salmon Run session asks from players

Salmon Run’s loop is built around shared tasks rather than individual score chasing. The team must survive incoming waves, defeat enemies and bring Golden Eggs to the required collection point. A player who prefers assigning roles, covering teammates and reacting to escalating waves will recognize the cooperative rhythm, but the ink-based movement and third-person camera make the moment-to-moment decisions unlike Hypercharge.

The mode is therefore a good substitute for the social structure of Hypercharge, not for its tower-defense construction or toy-soldier fiction. Pick it when the group wants short, repeatable cooperative runs and a colorful visual language. Do not pick it expecting a first-person campaign or a defensive base-building replica.

Multiplayer setup: plan for one system and one copy per player

Nintendo Support says each player needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch and a copy of Splatoon 3 for multiplayer. That documented requirement is the key purchasing detail for a group considering it as a couch-co-op replacement. The setup is multi-console: players bring separate Switch-family systems and game copies, rather than sharing one console through split-screen.

Nintendo also flags Nintendo Switch Online requirements for relevant online play. Check the account and subscription status for every participant before scheduling a session; owning the game alone does not remove the service requirement where Nintendo applies it.

  1. Count the players and consoles. For a full Salmon Run group, plan around Nintendo’s four-player description and make sure each participant has a Switch 2 or Switch.
  2. Confirm a copy for every player. Nintendo Support’s multiplayer guidance specifies one copy of Splatoon 3 per player.
  3. Check Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo identifies the service as required for relevant online play, so verify each account before connecting.
  4. Choose Salmon Run for wave cooperation. Use the mode when the group wants to defeat Salmonids and collect Golden Eggs together, rather than treating standard 4-on-4 battles as a horde replacement.

Who should choose Splatoon 3?

  • Groups that want a four-player wave activity with a colorful, accessible presentation.
  • Players who enjoy third-person shooting and team positioning more than conventional FPS gun handling.
  • Friends who already have separate Switch-family consoles and copies, or who are comfortable assembling that setup.
  • Anyone who wants a recurring cooperative mode rather than a one-time campaign.

Choose something else if your non-negotiable requirement is split-screen on one Switch, first-person shooting, or a toy-defense setting. Those are not documented as Splatoon 3’s multiplayer arrangement or identity.

Borderlands Legendary Collection: the best choice for FPS campaigns and loot

What the collection includes

Nintendo presents Borderlands Legendary Collection as “three times the mayhem, three times the loot, and three times the action.” The package includes Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Nintendo identifies Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition as a “co-op shooter-looter,” which accurately signals the collection’s main difference from Hypercharge: you progress through campaign content, defeat enemies for equipment and build a character over a longer RPG-style arc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first-person viewpoint and conventional gunplay make Borderlands the stronger fit for a player who searched for “a Switch co-op FPS” and meant a traditional shooter. Its three-game scope also gives a group substantially more campaign material than a wave-only substitute, although the exact way players connect can vary by edition and region.

How its co-op differs from Hypercharge

Borderlands emphasizes campaign co-op and loot progression instead of defending a single objective through repeated waves. Missions provide the structure: move through a story, fight enemies, collect equipment and continue developing a character. That makes it a better recommendation for a group that wants a shared adventure with persistent rewards than for one that wants a quick defense match.

The trade-off is equally important. Nintendo’s product information supports the collection’s co-op shooter-looter positioning, but you should not assume a particular couch-co-op arrangement without checking the edition sold in your region. Confirm whether the version you are buying supports the local configuration your group expects, and verify the online requirements before purchase.

Storage and service requirements

Nintendo states that Borderlands Legendary Collection requires a download of at least 49 GB. That is a product requirement, not an independent performance measurement. Check the free space on the console before starting the download; a microSD card may be needed if internal storage is insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo also states that Nintendo Switch Online is required for the collection’s Save Data Cloud and for online features where specified. Those are separate checks: storage determines whether the collection can be installed, while the subscription determines whether the relevant online functions are available on the account.

  1. Check available storage. Compare the console’s free space with the stated minimum download of at least 49 GB.
  2. Prepare a microSD card if necessary. Nintendo notes that one may be needed to complete the download.
  3. Verify the edition and region. Product packaging and online requirements can differ, so confirm the exact Nintendo Switch release offered to you.
  4. Check Nintendo Switch Online. Confirm the service for online features and Save Data Cloud where Nintendo specifies it.
  5. Confirm local-play behavior before buying for a couch group. Do not infer split-screen support from the phrase “co-op shooter-looter”; check the exact edition’s listing.

Who should choose Borderlands Legendary Collection?

  • Players who specifically want first-person shooting rather than third-person ink combat.
  • Groups that prefer campaign missions and character-building over wave-defense rounds.
  • Players who value loot collection and the ability to move through three included games.
  • Anyone with enough storage, or a microSD card ready for the at-least-49-GB download.

It is a poor fit if four-player split-screen on one console is the purchase requirement and the edition’s local behavior has not been verified. It is also less suitable for someone who wants a dedicated horde mode rather than a campaign shooter with cooperative play.

Direct comparisons by the feature you care about

If couch co-op is the deciding feature

Hypercharge has the clearest documented advantage: Nintendo explicitly lists split-screen/local co-op and online co-op with three other players. Splatoon 3 should not be presented as a same-console replacement because Nintendo’s support guidance requires each player to have their own Switch-family system and game copy. Borderlands Legendary Collection requires an edition-specific check before you make a local-play promise.

For a family room with one Switch and several controllers, Hypercharge is the safest match among these three based on the cited product descriptions. If the group can provide multiple consoles, Splatoon 3 becomes viable; if the group can verify the local configuration of its Borderlands edition, that option may work, but the listing should make the decision rather than assumption.

If wave or horde play is the priority

Splatoon 3 is the clearest alternative. Salmon Run is described by Nintendo as a four-player activity in which teams defeat waves of Salmonids and collect Golden Eggs, and it is available 24/7 according to Nintendo’s launch news. The goal and setting differ from Hypercharge’s HYPER-CORE defense, but the repeated cooperative wave structure is direct.

Borderlands Legendary Collection is not the horde-mode substitute in this comparison. Its documented identity is campaign co-op and shooter-looter progression. Choose it when the group wants missions and loot, not when everyone specifically asked for wave survival.

If conventional FPS handling is essential

Borderlands Legendary Collection is the natural fit because its collection is built around first-person shooter action and loot progression. Hypercharge also supports first-person play, but adds a third-person option and toy-defense framing. Splatoon 3 is third-person ink shooting, so it should not be sold as a conventional FPS replacement.

If the group wants a long campaign

Borderlands has the strongest documented campaign route because the collection contains three games: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel. Splatoon 3’s relevant comparison point is its repeatable multiplayer modes, especially Salmon Run, rather than a three-game campaign package. Hypercharge’s defining structure here is wave defense, not a collection of campaign shooters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If setup simplicity matters more than genre

Start with the hardware you already own. One Switch and one copy favors Hypercharge’s documented split-screen option. Several Switch-family systems and copies make Splatoon 3’s multiplayer arrangement possible, provided the Nintendo Switch Online requirements are met where relevant. Borderlands adds a storage decision before play because Nintendo lists a download of at least 49 GB, followed by edition and online checks.

A practical decision path

Use this sequence instead of choosing by box art or the word “co-op” alone:

  1. Ask whether everyone must play on one console. If yes, begin with Hypercharge. Splatoon 3’s documented multiplayer setup requires one Switch-family system and copy per player, and Borderlands needs edition-specific confirmation.
  2. Ask whether waves are the main attraction. If yes, choose between Hypercharge’s HYPER-CORE defense and Splatoon 3’s Salmon Run. Borderlands is aimed at campaign progression.
  3. Ask whether the camera must be first person. If yes, Borderlands or Hypercharge fit the stated perspective requirement; Splatoon 3 is third-person.
  4. Ask whether the group wants loot and a campaign arc. If yes, Borderlands’ three included games and shooter-looter structure are the relevant advantages.
  5. Check the practical constraints. For Splatoon 3, count consoles, copies and Nintendo Switch Online access. For Borderlands, check at least 49 GB of storage, a possible microSD requirement, the edition’s local behavior and Nintendo Switch Online needs.
  6. Buy only after matching the setup to the listing. “Co-op” does not automatically mean split-screen, and “shooter” does not automatically mean first person.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every four-player mode is couch co-op

Nintendo’s four-player wording for Splatoon 3’s Salmon Run describes the size of the group, not a shared-console arrangement. Pair that fact with Nintendo Support’s requirement for a separate Switch-family system and copy per player. Treat the number of players and the number of consoles as separate planning questions.

Buying Borderlands without checking storage

The collection’s at-least-49-GB download can exceed the console’s available internal space. Check storage before purchase or prepare a compatible microSD card. The figure is Nintendo’s stated product requirement, not a promise about download time or performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing a campaign shooter with a wave-defense game

Borderlands’ co-op value comes from campaign missions and loot progression. Splatoon 3’s comparable mode is Salmon Run, where four players defeat Salmonid waves and collect Golden Eggs. Hypercharge is the one centered on protecting the HYPER-CORE through wave-based tower-defense play. Selecting by the word “shooter” alone hides those very different loops.

Ignoring Nintendo Switch Online requirements

Nintendo flags the service for relevant Splatoon 3 online play and for Borderlands features where specified, including Save Data Cloud. Check the current requirements attached to your region, account and edition before the first session.

Bottom line

Splatoon 3 is the best Hypercharge alternative for a group that wants coordinated third-person shooting and a dedicated four-player wave mode, provided every participant has a Switch-family console and a copy. Borderlands Legendary Collection is the better choice for conventional first-person gunplay, campaign co-op and loot progression, but it needs a large download and an edition-specific check for local and online behavior. If split-screen on one console and wave-based tower defense are both non-negotiable, Hypercharge: Unboxed remains the closest match rather than something either alternative fully replaces.
