For Nintendo Switch Sports Tennis, start with one detached Nintendo Joy-Con for each player and a Joy-Con wrist strap for every controller in use. Buy additional standard Joy-Con only for paired-controller multiplayer or to replace a missing or unreliable controller. Do not buy a Leg Strap for Tennis, and do not plan on using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: Nintendo lists Pro Controllers as incompatible with Switch Sports.
The right purchase depends mainly on how many people will play and whether you already own the game. This guide separates safety equipment from optional extras, explains the controller combinations Tennis supports, and shows how to avoid paying for accessories intended for other sports.

At a glance: what to buy
| Accessory or purchase | Is it needed for Tennis? | Best reason to get it | Who can skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Joy-Con wrist strap (model HAC-014 or compatible replacement) | Yes, for each detached Joy-Con used during play | Secures the motion controller to your wrist and is the safety accessory Nintendo emphasizes for Tennis | No one playing with detached Joy-Con should skip a properly attached strap |
| Standard Nintendo Joy-Con controllers | Yes; Tennis uses detached Joy-Con motion controls | A second pair enables additional local players; a single replacement restores a lost, damaged or unreliable controller | Players who already have enough working Joy-Con for their chosen mode |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | No; it is not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports | None for Tennis in this game | Everyone looking specifically for a Tennis controller |
| Leg Strap | No | Designed for supported Soccer play and other software such as Ring Fit Adventure | Anyone buying accessories solely for Tennis |
| Physical Nintendo Switch Sports game | Only if you do not already own the game | Lets a new owner start playing; any included Leg Strap is for Soccer-oriented features, not Tennis | Existing digital or physical owners |
This is a control-and-safety purchase, not a performance-upgrade purchase. Nintendo’s published material does not establish a Tennis advantage from a special racket shell, weighted grip or other add-on.

Tennis is one of Switch Sports’ Joy-Con motion-control activities. The controller is swung as a motion device, so the relevant hardware is a detached standard Joy-Con rather than a traditional gamepad. A solo player can use a single Joy-Con; the game also supports paired Joy-Con configurations where the selected sport and play mode call for them.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Switch Sports is not supported in Handheld Mode. A Joy-Con attached to the console is therefore not a substitute for the detached controller arrangement used for Tennis. Plan to play with the console set up for wireless Joy-Con use and enough clear space to swing safely.
Nintendo’s official compatibility guidance also rules out the standard Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It may be an excellent controller for other Switch games, but it is not a Tennis option in Switch Sports; buying one to solve a Tennis-control problem will not address that problem.
Joy-Con wrist straps are the essential accessory
Why Nintendo calls for a strap
Nintendo’s Joy-Con strap instructions identify the original accessory as model HAC-014 and state: Always attach the Joy-Con strap accessories to the Joy-Con when using them as detached wireless controllers. The official Switch Sports site gives the Tennis-relevant safety warning in plain language: Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play.
The strap is not a cosmetic add-on. It provides a wrist connection while the Joy-Con is moving, which helps keep a controller from leaving your hand if your grip loosens during a swing. Use one strap on every detached Joy-Con being held, not merely on the first player’s controller.
What to buy
Use the Nintendo HAC-014 straps that came with your Joy-Con where available. If one is lost or damaged, choose a replacement explicitly made for the standard Joy-Con rail and verify that the locking mechanism and wrist loop are intact. A strap that cannot lock securely to the controller is not a safety solution.

Attach and check the strap before each session
- Slide the strap accessory fully onto the Joy-Con’s attachment rail in the direction indicated by the strap hardware.
- Engage the strap’s lock so it cannot slide off the rail while you play.
- Place the loop around the wrist of the hand holding that Joy-Con and tighten it enough to stay in place without cutting into the wrist.
- Give the secured controller a gentle check before starting a match. If the lock, rail, cord or loop is cracked, stretched or unable to hold, replace the strap.
- Repeat the process for every detached controller, including a second player’s Joy-Con.
Keep the strap attached while the controller is in motion. Removing it between points does not create a Tennis benefit and eliminates the protection Nintendo is asking players to use.
How many Joy-Con do you need?
| Your situation | Controller plan | Accessory decision |
|---|---|---|
| One person playing Tennis | One working detached standard Joy-Con | One wrist strap attached to that Joy-Con |
| Two people who each need a controller | One detached Joy-Con per player; use paired or additional Joy-Con as the game’s on-screen setup requests | One wrist strap for every controller in use |
| An existing Joy-Con is missing or unreliable | Replace the affected standard Joy-Con rather than changing to a Pro Controller | Add a strap for the replacement if one is not included |
| You want a larger local multiplayer setup | Buy the number of additional standard Joy-Con required by the players and mode you intend to use | Match each added controller with its own strap |
Solo Tennis
For a single player, the economical setup is one working standard Joy-Con and one wrist strap. There is no Tennis requirement to own a second pair merely to start a solo match. Keep any spare controller as a replacement only if it is already part of your collection; it does not improve the motion scheme by itself.

Additional standard Joy-Con become useful when another person needs a controller. Buy complete, working controllers rather than a shell or racket-shaped grip that does not add a recognized input device. Because every detached controller is being swung, plan the same wrist-strap protection for the second player and any later additions.
Replacing a problem controller
A replacement is justified when a Joy-Con is lost, physically damaged or no longer provides dependable motion input. Keep the replacement standard and compatible with the console’s Joy-Con system. A different controller category cannot bypass Switch Sports’ compatibility requirement.
Why a Pro Controller is the wrong purchase
Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ explicitly says Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Tennis depends on the movement of a detached Joy-Con, while the Pro Controller is a conventional gamepad without the supported Tennis control arrangement in this title.

This matters when comparing bundles or replacing hardware. If a listing highlights a Pro Controller as a way to play every Switch game, that general statement does not apply to Switch Sports Tennis. Retain it for compatible games if you already own one, but do not count it toward the Joy-Con needed for Tennis.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do you need the Leg Strap?
No. The Leg Strap is not part of the Tennis control scheme and does not improve a Tennis swing. Nintendo’s product information associates the accessory’s requirement with some Soccer play, while its support material describes the strap as designed for Ring Fit Adventure or Nintendo Switch Sports more broadly.
That broad compatibility description does not make it a Tennis requirement. The Leg Strap holds a Joy-Con on the thigh for supported activities; Tennis uses a hand-held, detached Joy-Con instead. Buying the strap specifically for Tennis adds cost without adding a Tennis input.
Remember that Nintendo’s Leg Strap diagram notes that a Joy-Con is sold separately and is not included with the strap. Even for a player who later wants the supported Soccer feature, the strap is not a replacement for the controller itself.
If you do not own Nintendo Switch Sports
A physical copy of Nintendo Switch Sports is a relevant purchase path for a new owner who prefers a cartridge. Check the package contents before treating an included strap as a Tennis accessory: Nintendo presents the Leg Strap in connection with Soccer-oriented play, not Tennis.

Owners of the game do not need to purchase another copy to obtain Tennis accessories. Their buying decision is limited to the working Joy-Con count and the wrist straps needed for the controllers they will detach.
A practical buying decision workflow
- Confirm ownership. If the game is already in your library, do not buy a second game package just to play Tennis. If you do not own it, choose the physical game only if that format suits you.
- Count the people who will play at the same time. Start with one standard detached Joy-Con for each intended player, then add controllers only when your chosen mode requires more.
- Count usable controllers, not shells or grips. A decorative tennis-racket attachment cannot replace a supported Joy-Con. Include only working standard Joy-Con in your count.
- Assign one wrist strap to each controller. Retain the HAC-014 straps that came with your controllers or buy compatible replacements for any missing or damaged straps.
- Reject incompatible substitutions. Remove the Pro Controller from the Tennis shopping list, and remove the Leg Strap unless you also have a separate, supported Soccer or fitness use for it.
- Inspect before paying for extras. If an accessory listing does not clearly identify a standard Joy-Con or a compatible wrist strap, it does not solve the hardware need described here.
Set up a safe Tennis session
- Place the console where players can see the game while standing or moving their arms freely. Tennis is not a Handheld Mode activity.
- Detach the standard Joy-Con that will be used and attach its wrist strap before opening a match.
- Repeat the strap attachment for every other player and every additional controller in the session.
- Use the console’s controller setup screen and the game’s on-screen prompts to assign the controllers. If a player is not detected, stop and resolve the pairing or controller-order issue before swinging.
- Clear the area around each player. Move furniture, pets, drinks and fragile objects outside the arm-swinging zone.
- Keep a comfortable gap between players. Do not swing toward another person, a television or a wall.
- Start with controlled practice movements. If a strap slips, a Joy-Con feels loose or motion input behaves erratically, pause the session and fix the hardware before continuing.
Space and wrist-strap safety
Nintendo’s warning combines two requirements: wear the wrist straps and allow adequate room. A strap cannot prevent a collision with a nearby person or object, and a large room does not protect a controller that is not secured to the wrist.
- Give every player a clear personal area rather than sharing one crowded swing zone.
- Keep the wrist loop snug but comfortable; a loose loop can slide down the hand, while an over-tight loop can be uncomfortable.
- Use the strap lock correctly instead of relying on friction between the Joy-Con and rail.
- Stop if the controller, cord or strap shows damage. Replace the failed part before the next session.
- Supervise children so they understand that the controller remains attached even during a short match.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Buying a racket-shaped accessory instead of a Joy-Con
Some products change the shape or grip of a controller, but the game still requires the underlying standard Joy-Con motion controller. Treat such a grip as optional ergonomics only; it cannot replace the Joy-Con or its strap.
Assuming a bundled Leg Strap is for every sport
A physical package or bundle may include a Leg Strap because of Soccer features. That inclusion does not change Tennis requirements. Keep the strap for its supported uses, but purchase or retain the wrist straps and standard Joy-Con needed for Tennis.
Using one strap for two controllers
A strap is attached to a controller, not shared sequentially during a busy session. If two Joy-Con are moving at once, prepare two straps so each player has the safety equipment Nintendo specifies.

Trying to solve unreliable motion with an incompatible controller
Switching to a Pro Controller does not provide a fallback for Tennis because that controller category is unsupported in Switch Sports. First inspect the existing Joy-Con, its strap and its wireless connection; replace the Joy-Con if it remains unreliable.
Playing in a confined space
A small sofa gap, a coffee table in front of the player or another person standing within arm’s reach creates a safety problem regardless of accessory quality. Rearrange the room before starting rather than trying to shorten the swing.
Accessory comparison by reader need
| Reader need | Recommended purchase | Not recommended for this need | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start solo Tennis with existing hardware | HAC-014 or compatible wrist strap for the detached Joy-Con | Leg Strap, Pro Controller, novelty racket shell | The game’s Tennis input is a hand-held Joy-Con motion controller |
| Add a second local player | Another standard Joy-Con plus its wrist strap | One shared strap or one Pro Controller | Each detached controller needs its own safety attachment and supported input |
| Replace a lost controller | Standard Joy-Con and a wrist strap | Leg Strap alone | The Leg Strap does not include a Joy-Con and is not a Tennis controller |
| Use Soccer features as well | Leg Strap only if that separate use is wanted, in addition to Joy-Con | Buying it as a Tennis upgrade | Nintendo ties the accessory’s requirement to some Soccer play, not Tennis |
| Buy the game for the first time | Physical Nintendo Switch Sports game if that format is preferred, plus the required Joy-Con straps | Assuming an included Leg Strap covers Tennis safety | The Leg Strap and wrist strap serve different activities |
What evidence does—and does not—support
Nintendo’s published guidance establishes controller compatibility, strap use and the sport-specific role of the Leg Strap. It does not publish a named statistic showing that one Tennis accessory improves win rate, swing speed or injury outcomes, and there is no verified performance test establishing a benefit from a third-party racket grip. Choose accessories for compatibility, safety and the number of players rather than for unsubstantiated performance claims.

Bottom line
For Nintendo Switch Sports Tennis, the complete essential kit is a working detached standard Joy-Con and a properly attached wrist strap for each player. Add more standard Joy-Con when another player needs one or when a controller must be replaced. Leave the Pro Controller and Leg Strap out of a Tennis-only purchase: Nintendo does not support the former in Switch Sports, and the latter is associated with Soccer and other supported software rather than Tennis.
