Resident Evil 2 has the clearest evidence: its Switch 2 version targets 60 frames per second and was observed running consistently in both docked and handheld play. Resident Evil 3 was also stable, but its handheld image is noticeably less detailed. Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition is confirmed for Switch 2, while its exact graphics menu, HDR controls, resolution and frame-rate behavior still need to be checked in the finished game.
HDR is not a universal “on” recommendation. Nintendo says HDR support varies by game and requires a compatible screen in TV mode, so the correct setting depends on your television, the game’s own output and your calibration.

Nintendo Switch 2 can output supported software at 4K, but Nintendo caps 4K output at 60 fps. A 120-Hz television can make menus and other compatible software feel responsive, yet it does not turn these remakes into 120-fps games.

Why display mode matters more than a universal slider value
A slider value that looks correct on a bright living-room television can make a handheld screen look washed out or too dark. The same game may also apply a different tone map when it is running on the built-in display versus a TV. For that reason, treat HDR as a per-display calibration decision, not a setting to copy between players.
TV mode and handheld mode are different targets
- TV mode: HDR output is available only with a compatible television or monitor, and Nintendo notes that support varies by game. Use the TV’s HDR picture mode only when the game’s image remains correctly exposed.
- Handheld mode: The built-in screen is a separate calibration target. Do not assume that a TV-oriented HDR setting or brightness adjustment transfers cleanly to it.
- Docked image quality: Both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 look cleaner when docked in the available hands-on evidence, with the largest fidelity penalty reported for Resident Evil 3 in handheld play.
What “60 fps” means here
A 60-fps target is a performance objective, not a promise that every frame arrives at exactly 16.67 milliseconds. Heavy effects, streaming and combat can still create brief frame-time variation. The useful distinction is whether the game remains consistently smooth during normal exploration and fights. Resident Evil 2 was observed maintaining that consistency in both modes; Resident Evil 3 was likewise described as stable, although its portable image is less detailed.
Set up the Switch 2 display layer first
Make these changes before adjusting an individual remake. The labels can change with system software, but the controls are in the console’s display settings.

- Choose the mode you will test. For a TV, dock the console and turn on the television or monitor first. For handheld testing, disconnect the dock and use the built-in screen at your usual room brightness.
- Open the console display settings. From the HOME menu, open System Settings and the display section. Check the output resolution and HDR option available for the current connection.
- Enable HDR output only when appropriate. In TV mode, switch HDR on only if the connected screen supports HDR and the game produces a natural image. If highlights clip, blacks crush or the whole picture looks gray, turn HDR off and compare again.
- Use a compatible 4K display for 4K output. If a supported game and television negotiate 4K, remember that the platform limit is 60 fps at 4K. Selecting a 120-Hz input mode does not create a 120-fps option in these games.
- Record a baseline. Before changing a game’s brightness or contrast, note the console HDR state, the TV picture mode and the game’s default values. This gives you a reliable way back if a later adjustment makes the image worse.
A repeatable HDR calibration check
- Start the game with its default brightness and HDR values.
- Stand in a scene containing a bright lamp, a window or another highlight, plus a dark corridor or shadowed room.
- Adjust the game’s calibration prompt until dark detail remains visible without lifting black areas into gray. Bright objects should retain shape rather than becoming featureless white.
- Pause and repeat the check after changing the television’s HDR picture mode. TV-side contrast or dynamic-tone controls can invalidate a game calibration.
- Repeat the complete process in handheld mode if you switch screens. Keep separate notes; do not copy the TV number to the built-in panel.
Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition: the safest 60-fps setup
Resident Evil 2 is the remake with the strongest verified Switch 2 performance evidence. TechRadar’s hands-on review says, “This version targets 60 frames per second (fps),” and reports consistent frame rates in both docked and handheld play. That makes the default performance configuration the sensible first choice rather than an attempt to trade smoothness for an unverified high-resolution profile.
Recommended configuration
- Performance: Launch with the default performance configuration. There is no verified reason in the available evidence to chase a different numerical profile.
- Mode: Choose docked mode for the cleanest image. Use handheld mode when portability is the priority; the reported frame-rate consistency remains intact.
- HDR: Leave HDR enabled only after checking the actual TV image. The hands-on review describes solid HDR presentation, while also noting that handheld textures are less refined.
- Television refresh rate: A 120-Hz panel is acceptable, but it does not change the game into a 120-fps title. The relevant target remains 60 fps.
How to judge the result
Test a short route that includes camera movement, a combat encounter and a transition through a darker room. Look for consistent motion rather than a single peak reading. If the docked image is sharp and correctly exposed while handheld looks softer, that is the expected fidelity trade-off rather than a fault with your settings.
Resident Evil 3: prioritize docked fidelity
Resident Evil 3 also ran stably in the available hands-on testing, but the visual balance differs from Resident Evil 2. TechRadar found docked graphics strong and described a noticeable fidelity hit in handheld mode. The practical choice is therefore straightforward: use docked mode for the best-looking presentation and handheld mode when mobility outweighs detail.

Recommended configuration
- Performance: Start with the default configuration. The evidence supports a stable, 60-fps-class experience, not a special 120-fps setting.
- Docked play: Use it for sharper textures and a cleaner overall image, especially in outdoor scenes and effects-heavy fights.
- Handheld play: Expect reduced visual fidelity. Stable motion does not mean the portable image will match the docked image.
- HDR: Calibrate on the display you are using. The review found that the graphics translate well after HDR calibration, but it does not establish one value that works for every panel.
When handheld softness is normal
Compare the same scene in both modes before changing performance options. If frame pacing remains smooth but fine texture detail, foliage or distant geometry looks reduced on the built-in screen, you are seeing the documented handheld compromise. Increasing television sharpness or changing a brightness slider cannot restore detail that the portable presentation does not render.
Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition: verify the finished game before tuning
Capcom lists Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, but Capcom’s listing does not specify its Switch 2-specific graphics menu, HDR controls, resolution, frame-rate behavior or docked-versus-handheld image trade-offs. Do not import numerical values from Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Requiem or another platform. Similar names do not guarantee identical rendering options.
A safe first-launch procedure
- Start Resident Evil 4 with the game’s default display and performance choices.
- Read every brightness or HDR instruction shown by the game. Record the original values before changing them.
- Run the same short scene docked and handheld, noting motion smoothness, shadow detail, highlight clipping and texture clarity.
- Check whether the options menu exposes separate quality, performance, resolution, HDR or camera controls. If a control is absent, do not assume it exists under another name.
- Only then adjust the setting that addresses an observed problem. Keep the console display state unchanged while comparing modes so that you are testing the game rather than two variables at once.
Until those checks are completed on the released build, the most accurate recommendation for RE4 is “default first, then calibrate to your own screen,” not a copied slider number or a claimed frame-rate mode.

Controls and camera: change only what solves a problem
The available evidence does not establish a single best sensitivity, camera speed or aim-assist value for these Switch 2 editions. Those controls are also personal: a player using handheld sticks may prefer a different response from someone using a docked controller. Treat them as comfort settings rather than performance settings.

- Keep a written baseline so you can revert without guessing.
- Do not use a camera adjustment to compensate for HDR clipping, softness or frame pacing; those are separate display or rendering issues.
- If motion feels uneven while the image remains sharp, compare docked and handheld before changing sensitivity. A control setting cannot repair frame-time variation.
Troubleshooting common picture problems
The HDR image is too dark
- Confirm that the television is actually in its HDR mode rather than applying an SDR profile.
- Re-run the game’s calibration on that exact input and picture mode.
- Disable aggressive dynamic contrast or black-level processing temporarily, then compare.
- If the result remains darker than SDR, turn console HDR output off and use the cleaner image. HDR is optional and game support varies.
The image looks gray or washed out
- Check the television’s black-level or range setting and ensure it matches the console input.
- Reset the game’s HDR values and recalibrate using both a bright highlight and a dark room.
- Compare with HDR disabled. If SDR is clearly correct, the game or display combination may not be producing a usable HDR image.
Handheld looks softer than docked
That is expected in the reported versions, especially Resident Evil 3. Verify smooth motion first; do not assume a softer portable image means the performance mode failed.

A 120-Hz TV does not show 120 fps
Nintendo’s platform guidance caps 4K output at 60 fps, and the available hands-on evidence supports a 60-fps-class experience. Refresh-rate capability on the television is not the same thing as a game’s rendered frame rate.
Release and edition context
Capcom lists physical Nintendo Switch 2 editions of Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. The listed digital release date is October 16, 2026, and the listed physical release date is January 29, 2027. Availability can differ by region and retailer, so check the product listing for your market before buying a physical copy.
Resident Evil 2’s scale is also reflected in Capcom’s 2026 figure of more than 20 million cumulative units. That sales total does not determine Switch 2 performance, but it explains why players may encounter multiple editions and platform versions when comparing settings. Always use the options and behavior of the Switch 2 release in front of you.
