Best Nintendo Switch 2 settings for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Start with TV Resolution: Automatic, HDR Output: Compatible Software Only, RGB Range: Automatic, and Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM): On when your television supports it. Enable 120 Hz or VRR only when the display, game software and console updates support those features. If the reported Encore Edition modes appear, choose Performance for smoother combat or Quality for a sharper picture.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version currently described as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is reported for November 5, 2026, but its mode details are not yet confirmed by an official Nintendo or publisher product page. The settings below therefore separate documented Switch 2 capabilities from provisional game targets.

Recommended Switch 2 profile at a glance

Setting Recommended starting value Why
TV Resolution Automatic Lets the console and television negotiate a supported signal. Use 1080p or 1440p when deliberately targeting 120 Hz output.
120 Hz Output On only with a compatible TV and software Nintendo documents 120 Hz output at 1080p and 1440p; the game must also support it.
RGB Range Automatic Prevents a mismatch between the console and TV. Select a fixed range only when the TV manual specifies the same range.
Auto-Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) On when supported Allows a compatible TV to switch into its low-latency or game mode automatically.
HDR Output Compatible Software Only HDR is sent only to software identified as compatible, avoiding forced HDR processing in unsupported games.
VRR On when supported Requires compatible software, a compatible TV, current system software and the required dock update for TV mode.

This profile is a safe baseline rather than a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution. Nintendo’s specifications describe what the console can output; they do not guarantee that this game will use every capability.

How to set the docked TV output

1. Leave resolution on Automatic first

Automatic is the right first choice for most docked setups. Nintendo lists 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (4K) as available TV resolutions. Automatic allows the connected display to negotiate a supported mode instead of locking the console to a value the television, receiver or cable path cannot handle.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Change the setting manually only for a specific reason. Select 1080p or 1440p if you are deliberately trying to use 120 Hz, because Nintendo documents 120 Hz output at those resolutions. Select 2160p when you want a 4K signal and your entire chain supports it. A 4K setting does not make the game render internally at 4K; it changes the output signal the console sends.

2. Understand what 4K means on Switch 2

Nintendo states that 4K output has four times the image resolution of 1080p. It also states that the frame-rate limit for 4K resolutions is 60 fps. Those are platform limits, not a claim that Guardians of the Galaxy reaches 4K or 60 fps. A game can render at a lower internal resolution and still send a 4K output signal, so compare actual game modes rather than assuming that the largest number is always the clearest or smoothest choice.

3. Keep RGB Range on Automatic

RGB Range controls how the console maps black and white levels for the display. Automatic is the safest setting because both devices can negotiate a compatible range. A forced Full or Limited value is appropriate only when the television’s manual tells you to match it. If the two devices disagree, blacks can look crushed, whites can lose detail, or the whole picture can appear gray and washed out.

4. Turn on ALLM when available

Auto Low-Latency Mode lets a compatible television enter its low-latency or game picture mode when the console requests it. Enable ALLM on Switch 2 when your display supports the feature. The TV still needs to support ALLM on the HDMI input used by the dock; a receiver or switch in between can prevent the request from reaching the screen.

HDR: the safest way to configure it

Use Compatible Software Only as the default

Switch 2 offers three HDR Output choices: Off, Compatible Software Only and For All Software. Nintendo says HDR requires both compatible software and a compatible display. Compatible Software Only is the least surprising choice because it does not force HDR processing on every game or application.

Choose Off if you are using a display without HDR, if HDR causes a signal problem, or if you prefer the television’s standard picture mode. Choose For All Software only when you have a deliberate reason to send HDR output broadly and you understand how your television handles SDR-to-HDR conversion. That option cannot add native HDR data to software that does not provide it.

Calibrate the console and television together

When HDR is enabled, use the console’s Adjust HDR screen while the TV is in its HDR picture mode. Adjusting one device while the other is in SDR can produce a result that looks correct in the menu but clips highlights or hides shadow detail during play. The game must actually output HDR before you judge the final image; an HDR-capable TV alone does not prove that the title supports HDR.

If the image looks gray, too dark or unusually bright after enabling HDR, first confirm that the TV input has entered HDR mode. Then return the console to Compatible Software Only and check the HDMI path, including any receiver or switch. Do not compensate for an RGB-range mismatch by changing HDR brightness controls.

120 Hz output: when it helps and when it does not

Nintendo documents 120 Hz Output only when the television and software support it, with 1080p and 1440p as the documented resolutions. The console’s highest possible frame rate is 120 fps in compatible games, but that is a ceiling for the platform, not a target for every title. A 120 Hz signal also does not automatically mean that a game renders at 120 frames per second; the game may run at a lower frame rate while the display refreshes at 120 Hz.

  1. Confirm the display path. Use a TV input, cable and any intermediary equipment that support the desired 120 Hz signal. If an AV receiver or HDMI switch is involved, test the dock directly with the TV when troubleshooting.
  2. Set the console output deliberately. Leave TV Resolution on Automatic for normal use, or select 1080p or 1440p when targeting 120 Hz. Enable 120 Hz Output only if the TV and the software support it.
  3. Check the television’s received signal. Use the TV’s information panel to verify that the input is receiving 120 Hz. A television may advertise a 120 Hz panel while a particular HDMI input or intermediate device accepts only a lower rate.
  4. Test inside the game. A working 120 Hz link does not establish that Guardians of the Galaxy is running at 120 fps. Look for an in-game performance option or a confirmed technical specification.

If enabling 120 Hz produces a blank screen, flicker or an unsupported-signal warning, return to Automatic resolution and disable 120 Hz Output. Reconnect the dock directly to the display, then test 1080p before trying 1440p again.

VRR: requirements and practical setup

Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ states: “VRR support varies by game and is available in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes.” In TV mode, Nintendo’s version 23.0.0 update, released September 9, 2026, added TV-mode VRR when both the software and television support it; a dock update is required as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update Switch 2 system software to the current release.
  2. Install the required dock update. Without the dock update, TV-mode VRR may remain unavailable even when the console and television are compatible.
  3. Enable VRR in the television’s gaming or display controls for the HDMI input connected to the dock.
  4. Enable VRR on the console if the option is available.
  5. Confirm that the game supports VRR. Nintendo explicitly says support varies by game, so a compatible TV and updated console are not sufficient by themselves.

VRR is most useful when a compatible game’s frame time varies. It synchronizes the display’s refresh timing within the supported range, reducing visible tearing and unevenness. It cannot raise the game’s rendering resolution or create frames the software does not produce.

Quality versus Performance in the reported Encore Edition

A community search result reports that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is planned for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, with TV-mode Quality targeting 30 fps at 1440p and Performance targeting 40 fps at 1080p. These figures and the release details remain provisional until Nintendo or the publisher confirms them on an official product page or in the shipped game.

Reported mode Reported target Motion during combat and traversal Image detail Best choice when
Quality 30 fps at 1440p Less fluid than the reported Performance target, with a 30 fps presentation. Higher output resolution and potentially sharper fine detail. You value image detail, play at a normal viewing distance, and prefer a 30 fps presentation.
Performance 40 fps at 1080p Smoother camera movement, traversal and combat than the reported 30 fps mode. Lower output resolution than the reported Quality mode. You notice motion judder, prioritize responsiveness, or sit close enough to see the difference in motion more than the difference in resolution.

If these options appear in the released game, start with Performance for action-heavy play. Switch to Quality when sharper detail matters more than fluidity. The decision is not determined by the TV’s maximum refresh rate: a 120 Hz display can show a 40 fps game, but it cannot turn the reported 30 fps Quality mode into 60 or 120 fps.

Because the targets are unconfirmed, treat the in-game menu and the final software as authoritative. If the shipped title uses different labels, frame rates or resolutions, follow those confirmed values rather than the provisional report.

Is 4K better than 1440p for this game?

Not automatically. Nintendo’s 4K figure describes output resolution, while the reported game modes describe 1440p and 1080p targets. Quality’s reported 1440p target may preserve more detail than Performance’s reported 1080p target, but the visible difference depends on screen size, viewing distance, scaling quality and the game’s internal rendering. A 4K television can accept a 1440p or 1080p signal; selecting 2160p does not prove that the game is rendering four times as many pixels.

Use Automatic resolution unless you are solving a specific compatibility problem. If the game offers Quality and Performance, choose between those modes first, then let the console and TV negotiate the output. Force 2160p only when you have confirmed that the resulting signal is stable and you prefer the television’s handling of that output. Remember that Nintendo limits 4K output to 60 fps, while the reported Performance target is 40 fps at 1080p.

Settings for common television setups

4K TV without 120 Hz or VRR

Use Automatic resolution, Compatible Software Only for HDR, Automatic RGB Range and ALLM when supported. The television can display the console’s 4K output, but there is no reason to force 120 Hz or VRR features the display cannot accept.

4K/120 Hz TV with ALLM

Keep Automatic resolution for ordinary play. If you are specifically testing 120 Hz, select 1080p or 1440p and enable 120 Hz Output. Leave ALLM enabled so the TV can switch into its low-latency mode. Verify the received refresh rate on the TV rather than relying on the panel’s marketing specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR TV with uncertain game support

Select Compatible Software Only, then calibrate Adjust HDR with the TV already in HDR mode. This avoids forcing HDR on software that does not support it. If the game does not trigger HDR, leave the console on the compatible-software setting instead of judging the SDR image through a forced HDR conversion.

TV with VRR

Update the console and dock, enable VRR on the TV input and console, and confirm that the software supports VRR. Nintendo says VRR availability varies by game and includes handheld, tabletop and TV modes; do not treat the presence of a VRR menu as proof that this title uses it.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV shows no picture after changing resolution or 120 Hz

  • Return TV Resolution to Automatic and disable 120 Hz Output.
  • Reconnect the dock directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver or HDMI switch.
  • Test 1080p before 1440p if you need a fixed high-refresh output.
  • Check that the TV input and cable path support the selected signal.

The picture is washed out or blacks are crushed

  • Set RGB Range back to Automatic on the console.
  • If you must choose a fixed range, match the value specified by the TV manual.
  • Do not use HDR brightness controls to correct an RGB-range mismatch.

HDR looks wrong or never activates

  • Set HDR Output to Compatible Software Only.
  • Run Adjust HDR while the TV is displaying its HDR picture mode.
  • Confirm that the software and display both support HDR.
  • Check the complete HDMI chain for a receiver or switch that may not pass HDR.

VRR is missing

  • Update Switch 2 system software.
  • Install the required dock update for TV mode.
  • Enable VRR on the specific TV input used by the dock.
  • Confirm that the game supports VRR; Nintendo says support varies by game.

Performance mode does not look like 40 fps

The reported 40 fps figure is a provisional target, not a confirmed specification. Check that the game is actually in Performance mode and that the TV is not applying a processing setting that changes motion presentation. If the final game lists different targets, use its confirmed information.

Recommended decision order

  1. Install the latest Switch 2 system and dock updates.
  2. Set TV Resolution to Automatic, RGB Range to Automatic and HDR Output to Compatible Software Only.
  3. Enable ALLM when the TV supports it.
  4. Enable VRR only after confirming display, software, system and dock compatibility.
  5. Choose the game’s Performance mode for smoother combat if the reported 40 fps/1080p option is present.
  6. Choose Quality for the reported 30 fps/1440p option when image detail is more important.
  7. Use 120 Hz only when the TV and software support it, remembering that Nintendo documents it at 1080p and 1440p.

This order keeps the console on broadly compatible settings before you add high-refresh, HDR or variable-refresh features that depend on the television and the game.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable starting point, use Automatic resolution, Automatic RGB Range, Compatible Software Only HDR and ALLM enabled. Add VRR after updating the console and dock and confirming game support. If the reported Encore Edition modes are present, Performance should feel smoother at its reported 40 fps/1080p target, while Quality should look sharper at its reported 30 fps/1440p target; verify those figures in the released game because they are not yet officially confirmed.
