For dependable overnight downloads, enable Software Auto-Updates at HOME Menu → System Settings → System, keep the console online, and configure System Settings → Sleep Mode to maintain a wired connection while sleeping when the console is docked. Switch 2 has 256 GB of system storage (some reserved for the system); use a compatible microSD Express card for downloaded software, updates, DLC and captures. You can move eligible content from Data Management without deleting save data, because save data remains in system memory.
The four settings that matter most
| Goal | Menu path | Recommended choice |
|---|---|---|
| Install game and application updates automatically | HOME Menu → System Settings → System | Enable Software Auto-Updates; keep Wi-Fi or wired internet connected. |
| Allow downloads while the console sleeps | HOME Menu → System Settings → Sleep Mode | Choose an auto-sleep time that suits your routine and keep the wired internet connection during sleep enabled when available. |
| See what is consuming space | HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management | Review system memory and microSD Express usage, then use Quick Delete or the software and capture-management tools. |
| Move eligible content to or from a card | Data Management → Move Data Between Console/microSD Express Card | Select downloaded software, DLC or eligible update data. Save data and some update data cannot be moved. |
These controls work together. Auto-updates determine whether the console downloads and installs available software updates; Sleep Mode determines how the console behaves after you stop using it; Data Management handles space and placement. A full console, disabled wireless communications or an incompatible storage card can still prevent a download.

How to make Nintendo Switch 2 update games automatically
Enable Software Auto-Updates
- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Turn on Software Auto-Updates.
Nintendo’s support guidance says an update downloads and installs automatically when the console is connected to the internet and Software Auto-Updates is enabled. The setting applies to downloaded software and its available updates; it does not create an internet connection by itself.
Keep the connection available
Leave the console connected to Wi-Fi, or use a wired connection through the dock. If the console is offline, in Airplane Mode, or disconnected from the network, it cannot retrieve an update. For a docked console that downloads overnight, the most reliable arrangement is a wired connection that remains active during Sleep Mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Use Sleep Mode rather than powering off
Automatic downloading requires the console to be able to check in. Powering the system completely off ends that opportunity until you turn it on again. Sleep Mode lets the console remain ready while using much less power than an active session.
What automatic updating does not guarantee
- An update may wait if the console has no usable internet connection.
- A full system memory or microSD Express card can block a download or installation.
- Airplane Mode disables wireless communications until you turn the relevant connection back on.
- Queued downloads can compete for space or bandwidth. Nintendo added an option to cancel all simultaneous downloads in system version 21.0.0.
If you need a particular game ready for a specific time, check its version and available storage before you leave the console in Sleep Mode. Auto-updates are a convenience setting, not a guarantee that every title will be current at a chosen minute.
Configure Sleep Mode for overnight downloads
Open the correct controls
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Sleep Mode.
- Choose an Auto-Sleep interval that matches how you use the console.
- When the option is available for your connection, enable maintaining a wired internet connection during Sleep Mode.
The auto-sleep interval controls when the console enters Sleep Mode after inactivity. It does not turn Software Auto-Updates on or off; both settings must be configured for hands-off downloads.

For a docked Switch 2, connect the dock to wired internet, enable the wired-connection-during-sleep option, and leave Software Auto-Updates enabled. This avoids relying on a wireless signal that may be weak near the console or interrupted by other network conditions.
Best portable setup
A portable console can still download in Sleep Mode when it remains connected to Wi-Fi, but the connection is subject to the usual wireless range and network conditions. If you use Airplane Mode while traveling, remember that it disables wireless communications and therefore stops online downloads until you restore the needed radio.

Understand Switch 2 storage before buying a card
Internal system memory
Nintendo Switch 2 provides 256 GB of system storage. A portion is reserved for console use, so the amount shown as available for games and media is lower than 256 GB. System memory is also where save data is stored.
microSD Express expansion
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards for downloaded software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots and videos. When buying a card, confirm that the listing explicitly says microSD Express and identifies Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility. Ordinary legacy Switch microSD cards are not the documented software-storage choice for Switch 2.

Nintendo Support states that a microSD Express card can be used to save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates and DLC. The card is therefore an expansion location for software and captures, not a replacement for the console’s save-data storage.
USB storage is not an alternative
External USB hard drives are not currently supported for Switch 2 storage. A USB drive cannot substitute for a compatible microSD Express card when you need more space for downloaded games or captures.
There is no official universal “best” capacity or price
Nintendo documents the card type and supported data, but does not publish a single best capacity, download-speed benchmark or universal retailer price. Choose capacity according to the amount of downloaded software and video you keep, and compare the actual card price and availability where you live. The important compatibility check is the Express designation and Switch 2 support, not a legacy-card label.

Check storage use and identify what to remove
Open Data Management
- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Review the separate use of system memory and the microSD Express card.
Data Management also provides Quick Delete, downloaded-software management, and tools for reviewing screenshots and videos. Start here before deleting anything: it shows whether the immediate problem is a large game, a collection of captures, or insufficient space for an update.

System version 22.0.0, released March 16, 2026, added a storage-capacity breakdown by data type. Update the console before relying on that newer view. It makes it easier to distinguish software, DLC, updates and captures instead of treating all used space as one total.
Delete captures deliberately
Screenshots and videos can accumulate unnoticed. Back up any capture you want to keep before using Quick Delete or the capture-management controls. Deleting a capture frees space; it does not affect game save data.
Move software between system memory and a microSD Express card
Use the built-in move tool
- Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management.
- Select Move Data Between Console/microSD Express Card.
- Choose the direction: from the console to the card, or from the card to the console.
- Select the downloaded software, DLC or eligible update data you want to move.
- Confirm the selection and allow the transfer to finish before removing the card or powering off.
Know what cannot move
Save data and some update data cannot be moved. Nintendo’s support instructions state this explicitly. Save data stays in system memory even when the associated game is stored on the card, so moving software is not a save-data backup procedure.
Moving does not permanently set the destination
Nintendo also warns that the move feature is not intended to specify where future data is saved. Treat it as a space-management operation for the content you select now, not as a permanent rule that all later downloads will automatically use the card. Check Data Management again if the console’s free-space balance changes.

Internal memory versus microSD Express
| Consideration | System memory | microSD Express card |
|---|---|---|

| Downloaded software | Supported. | Supported. |
| Software updates and DLC | Supported; some update data may not be movable. | Supported; some update data may not be movable. |
| Screenshots and videos | Supported. | Supported. |
| Save data | Stored here. | Not the save-data location. |
| How content gets there | Downloaded directly or moved from a card when eligible. | Downloaded or moved through Data Management when eligible. |
| Purchase cost | Included with the console. | Requires a separate purchase; price varies by capacity and seller. |
| Portability between consoles | Built into the individual console. | Holds expansion content, while save data remains in the console’s system memory. |
This distinction matters when you replace or use another console. Taking the card with you does not take the game’s save data with it, because saves remain in system memory. For supported software, Nintendo Switch Online is required for Save Data Cloud features; support and availability depend on the software and the service’s region.
Free space without deleting save data
Safest sequence
- Open Data Management and inspect both storage locations.
- Back up screenshots and videos you want to retain.
- Use Quick Delete or downloaded-software management to remove finished downloads and captures.
- Move eligible software, DLC or update data to a microSD Express card if one is installed.
- Leave enough free space for the next update rather than filling the storage immediately.
Deleting software is not deleting its save
Deleting downloaded software does not delete that software’s save data. The game can be downloaded again later, and its save remains in system memory. This makes deleting a completed or rarely used download a safer way to reclaim space than deleting save data.
What deletion does not preserve
Deleting screenshots or videos removes those media files, so copy them elsewhere first if they matter. Moving or deleting software also does not turn the microSD Express card into a save-data backup; saves remain subject to the console’s system-memory and supported cloud-save behavior.

Hold the HOME button for at least one second to open Quick Settings. It provides shortcuts for Sleep Mode, Airplane Mode, brightness and volume.
Airplane Mode warning
Airplane Mode disables wireless communications. You can manually re-enable selected radios, but downloads will not continue while the required connection is disabled. If an update appears stuck after using Airplane Mode, open Quick Settings, restore the appropriate wireless connection, and confirm that the console is online.

Brightness and volume are safe download controls
Changing brightness or volume does not manage storage or update eligibility. Use Quick Settings for those adjustments, but use System Settings for Software Auto-Updates, Sleep Mode and Data Management.
Keep the console current before troubleshooting newer controls
| Version or software update | Date | Relevant change |
|---|---|---|
| System version 21.0.0 | November 10, 2025 | Added an option to cancel all simultaneous downloads and changed virtual-game-card download behavior. |
| System version 22.0.0 | March 16, 2026 | Added storage-capacity breakdown by data type. |
| Welcome Tour version 1.1.1 | September 23, 2026 | Software update identified in Nintendo’s current update information. |
If a menu item described here is missing, check the installed system version first. The 22.0.0 storage breakdown and the 21.0.0 cancel-all-downloads control depend on the corresponding system update. Software updates such as Welcome Tour 1.1.1 are separate from the console firmware, but they use the same online-update infrastructure when the software and console are eligible.
Troubleshoot downloads that do not start or finish
Automatic updates are not happening
- Recheck System Settings → System → Software Auto-Updates.
- Confirm the console is connected to Wi-Fi or wired internet.
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off, or that the needed radio has been re-enabled.
- Put the console in Sleep Mode rather than powering it off.
- Check Data Management for enough free space in system memory or on the microSD Express card.
The console sleeps but does not download overnight
- For a docked console, verify that the wired connection is maintained during Sleep Mode.
- Check that the Ethernet connection itself is active before putting the console to sleep.
- Use the storage view to remove captures or delete a finished download if the update cannot be installed.
There is no room for an update
- Open Data Management and use the capacity breakdown if system version 22.0.0 or later is installed.
- Delete downloaded software you can redownload later; its save data remains in system memory.
- Move eligible software, DLC or update data to a compatible microSD Express card.
- Remove backed-up screenshots and videos.
A move operation does not include everything
That is expected when the selection includes save data or update data that Nintendo excludes from transfer. The move tool handles eligible software content; it is not a general-purpose copy command and does not establish a permanent future-save location.

When you install a new game
- Confirm that Software Auto-Updates is enabled.
- Check available space in Data Management before starting a large download.
- Decide whether the download should live in system memory or on a microSD Express card based on current free space.
- Leave the console connected to the internet while the download and installation finish.
Once a month
- Review system-memory and card usage in Data Management.
- Delete or back up old captures.
- Move eligible software if one storage location is becoming crowded.
- Check the installed system version so new storage and download controls are available.
Before travel
- Install pending updates while you have reliable internet access.
- Confirm that frequently played software and its updates fit in available storage.
- Remember that Airplane Mode disables wireless communications; turn it on only when you intentionally want offline operation.
- Do not treat a microSD Express card as a save-data backup, because saves remain in system memory.
Recommended configuration
Enable Software Auto-Updates, keep the console online, and use Sleep Mode with a maintained wired connection for docked overnight downloads. Use Data Management rather than guesswork: inspect the storage breakdown, delete downloaded software or captures when appropriate, and move eligible content to a microSD Express card. Keep save data in mind at every step—deleting software does not delete its save, while moving software does not move the save. Finally, update to current system software so the 21.0.0 download controls and 22.0.0 storage breakdown are available.
