For the sharpest-looking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 image on Nintendo Switch 2, start with Nvidia DLSS in the game’s Quality or Graphics menu. It uses the same source pixel resolution as Filmic SMAA T2X in the available analysis, but reconstructs edges more cleanly and defines busy textures such as foliage and door decals more clearly. Test Filmic SMAA T2X while moving if DLSS shows artifacts or seems to affect frame pacing; current evidence does not establish a definitive performance winner. Use 1440p or 1080p output for a compatible 120 Hz display, or 2160p/4K when you prefer a high-resolution TV signal and accept a 60-fps output ceiling. HDR, ALLM and VRR require compatible television, software and correct console settings.

The recommended starting profile

These settings prioritize a clean, stable image without claiming a frame-rate advantage that has not been measured. Apply them in this order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and enter its Quality or Graphics menu.
  2. Set the upscaling or anti-aliasing option to Nvidia DLSS.
  3. Play a few minutes in a busy area, looking at fences, foliage, signs and door decals while turning the camera. Judge the image in motion, not only on a paused view.
  4. If you see reconstruction artifacts, ghosting or an undesirable change in frame pacing, switch to Filmic SMAA T2X and repeat the same movement test.
  5. Use FidelityFX CAS only as an additional sharpening choice when neither of those presentations suits your display. CAS is a contrast-adaptive sharpening control, not evidence that the game is rendering at a higher native resolution.
  6. For a docked 120 Hz setup, choose 1080p or 1440p in the Switch 2 TV-output settings. Choose 2160p/4K only when the TV’s high-resolution signal matters more to you than high-refresh output.
  7. Set HDR to compatible software only unless you deliberately need an all-software HDR mode, enable the TV’s game or low-latency mode, and turn on VRR when both the television and game support it.

This profile improves the way existing pixels are reconstructed and displayed. It cannot create detail that the game does not render, and no cited source provides a controlled numeric sharpness or frame-rate benchmark for the three in-game options.

DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X and FidelityFX CAS compared

The three controls do different jobs. DLSS and Filmic SMAA T2X are the principal alternatives in the current Switch 2 analysis; FidelityFX CAS is a separate sharpening option. The table describes what is established and what still needs to be checked on your own display.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Option What the available analysis establishes Edge stability while moving Texture and fine-detail definition Artifacts or cost to watch for Measured winner?
Nvidia DLSS It appears to interpret the same pixel data, at the same resolution, as Filmic SMAA. It has better edge treatment and reconstructs detail from accumulated frame data, producing cleaner lines once the frame settles. Busy, non-uniform surfaces such as foliage and door decals benefit from sharper definition. Check for reconstruction artifacts and any change in frame pacing on your system. Best evidence-backed starting point for image clarity; no controlled final-build performance result is supplied.
Filmic SMAA T2X It is the direct comparison option to DLSS in the game’s image-quality menu. Requires a movement test on the final build before declaring it better or worse. Use it as the fallback if DLSS’s reconstruction is distracting or appears to cost performance. Do not assume a static screenshot predicts motion quality. Not established; the cited analysis calls for final-build motion testing.
FidelityFX CAS It is an additional contrast-adaptive sharpening choice in the Quality menu. Not measured in the cited material. Can be used to tune perceived crispness, but does not prove a higher native render resolution. Over-sharpening can make edges look harsh; judge it at your normal viewing distance. Not established against DLSS or Filmic SMAA.

Digital Foundry analyst Tom Morgan’s explanation is the reason DLSS is the first setting to try: it says the option uses the same resolution as Filmic SMAA while improving edge treatment through accumulated frame data, then sharpening busier textures. That is an image-quality observation, not a claim that DLSS always delivers a higher frame rate.

How to compare the image correctly

Changing an anti-aliasing or upscaling option can look different in a menu, in a still screenshot and during a turn. A repeatable comparison avoids choosing a setting because one frame happened to look sharper.

  1. Load the same map or repeatable scene with each option. Keep the docked or handheld mode, display, brightness and field of view unchanged.
  2. Inspect thin geometry first: railings, wires, window frames and weapon outlines. Look for stair-stepping when the camera is still and shimmer when it moves.
  3. Pan slowly across foliage, textured walls and door decals. DLSS’s stated advantage is most visible in this busy detail rather than in a large, uniform surface.
  4. Run, rotate quickly and track a moving target. Look for trailing, unstable edges, sudden changes in detail or a distracting reconstruction pattern.
  5. Repeat the test after several minutes of play. A setting that looks excellent in a static view but breaks up during motion is not the sharper practical choice.
  6. Use the same output mode while comparing. Switching from 1080p to 4K at the same time changes the TV signal and makes the result difficult to attribute to the in-game option.

There is no published controlled number that ranks DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X and CAS for edge stability, texture definition or frame-time impact. Your comparison should therefore be a visual and motion check, not a claim of a universal benchmark result.

Choosing the right docked resolution

Nintendo’s current Switch 2 TV-output documentation lists 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p/4K output choices. The important distinction is refresh-rate support: 120 Hz output is supported only at 1080p and 1440p, while 4K TV mode is capped at 60 frames per second.

TV-output choice When it makes sense Refresh and resolution qualification Sharpness implication
1080p You want the broadest high-refresh compatibility or sit close to a 1080p display. Supports 120 Hz output when the display and game are compatible. Provides a direct 1080p signal; perceived detail still depends on the game’s internal rendering and DLSS/SMAA/CAS choice.
1440p You have a 1440p or 120 Hz-capable display and want a balance between pixel density and refresh headroom. Supports 120 Hz output when the display and game are compatible. Often the most practical high-refresh choice on a compatible monitor or TV, but no Call of Duty benchmark establishes it as universally sharper than 4K output.
2160p/4K You prefer the television’s highest-resolution input and accept a lower refresh ceiling. 4K TV mode is limited to a maximum of 60 fps. The TV receives a 4K signal; that does not prove that the game’s internal image is rendered natively at 4K or that it will look sharper than a well-scaled 1440p presentation.
720p You are using an older or lower-resolution display that requires it. 120 Hz support is not established by the cited Nintendo documentation for this mode. Use DLSS or the game’s other image controls first; output resolution alone cannot compensate for a lower-resolution signal.

So, does 1440p look sharper than 4K in Call of Duty? Not as a general rule. The 4K setting sends more output pixels to the TV but is capped at 60 fps. A 1440p signal can look cleaner in motion on a 120 Hz-capable display because it permits the higher-refresh mode, while the final appearance also depends on the game’s reconstruction, the TV’s scaling and your viewing distance. No cited controlled test supplies a universal sharpness verdict between these modes.

Setting up 120 Hz output

The Switch 2 and display must both support the mode, and the game must have a compatible high-refresh presentation. Nintendo advertises up to 120 fps for compatible games and displays; that figure is a capability ceiling, not a promise that every Call of Duty scene or mode reaches 120 fps.

  1. Connect the console to a television or monitor with an input that supports 1080p or 1440p at 120 Hz.
  2. Open the Switch 2 system settings and select the TV-output section.
  3. Choose 1080p or 1440p rather than 2160p/4K. Nintendo’s documentation limits 120 Hz output to those two resolutions.
  4. On the display, enable its 120 Hz mode if it has a separate setting. Use the input that supports the required bandwidth.
  5. Start the game and compare motion in an actual match. A 120 Hz-capable signal does not by itself make the game render at 120 fps.

If the display falls back to 60 Hz, first verify the selected resolution, cable, input and television specification. Do not switch to 4K while troubleshooting 120 Hz: Nintendo states that 4K TV mode has a 60-fps maximum.

HDR, ALLM and VRR settings

HDR

Set HDR to Compatible software only as the safe default. Use an all-software HDR setting only when you have a reason to force HDR and your television supports it. After changing the setting, run the console’s Adjust HDR tool and follow the on-screen calibration. HDR can change perceived contrast and highlight detail, so judge sharpness after calibration rather than comparing an HDR image with an uncalibrated SDR image.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

ALLM and the TV’s game mode

Enable Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) when the television supports it. ALLM allows the console to request the display’s low-latency game mode automatically. If the TV does not support ALLM, select its game or low-latency picture mode manually. This changes response processing, not the game’s render resolution, but it can make aiming feel more immediate.

VRR

Enable variable refresh rate when the television and game support it and the console is updated. Nintendo’s September 10, 2026 system update added TV-mode VRR support; when supported, the display matches its refresh rate to the game’s processing. VRR does not add detail or turn a 60-fps game into a 120-fps game. Its purpose is to reduce visible tearing or unevenness when frame delivery varies within the supported range.

RGB range

Leave RGB range on Automatic unless your television manual requires a specific full-range or limited-range match. The available Nintendo support material does not specify a Call of Duty-specific override. A range mismatch can make blacks look crushed or the image look washed out, which may be mistaken for a sharpness problem.

Handheld mode: what Handheld Mode Boost can and cannot do

Handheld Mode Boost is not a native Switch 2 Call of Duty sharpness fix. Nintendo describes the feature as making Nintendo Switch software run as if it were in TV mode; power use may increase, and the effect varies by software. Nintendo also states that it has no effect on software for Nintendo Switch 2. Therefore, use the game’s DLSS, Filmic SMAA T2X or FidelityFX CAS controls for the native Switch 2 build.

In handheld play, keep the console at a comfortable viewing distance and compare options while moving the camera. The smaller screen can hide fine shimmer in a static scene and make over-sharpening more obvious around text or weapon edges. Do not expect Handheld Mode Boost to alter the internal resolution, anti-aliasing method or frame rate of native Switch 2 software.

Storage and the microSD Express requirement

A microSD Express card is the clearly documented physical accessory relevant to running downloaded Switch 2 software smoothly. Nintendo identifies the microSD Express standard as needed for faster access and smooth operation with Switch 2 software. It does not sharpen the rendered image, change DLSS reconstruction or raise the TV output resolution.

If the game is installed on compatible internal storage, storage speed is not a reason to change the graphics option. If you use removable storage for a downloaded Switch 2 title, use a card that meets the microSD Express requirement rather than assuming any older microSD card provides the same access performance. Capacity and installation location affect storage management; they do not create extra rendered detail.

Practical profiles by priority

Your priority In-game image option TV output Other settings What to verify
Cleanest edges and textures Nvidia DLSS 1440p if your display supports it; otherwise use the display’s suitable mode. Calibrate HDR if enabled; use Game Mode or ALLM. Check foliage, decals and thin lines during movement for artifacts.
High-refresh play Start with DLSS, then compare Filmic SMAA T2X in motion. 1080p or 1440p. Enable 120 Hz on the display; enable VRR when supported. Confirm the game and display actually operate in the intended refresh mode.
4K television presentation Start with DLSS; use Filmic SMAA T2X if its motion result is preferable. 2160p/4K. Use HDR only with a compatible TV and calibrated settings. Remember that 4K TV mode is capped at 60 fps.
Fewest reconstruction concerns Compare Filmic SMAA T2X with DLSS; keep the one that remains stable in motion. Use the resolution that matches your display priority. Leave RGB range on Automatic unless the TV manual says otherwise. Do not infer performance from a still screenshot.
Handheld play Use the native game controls; begin with DLSS. Not applicable. Handheld Mode Boost has no effect on native Switch 2 software. Judge text, foliage and weapon edges while panning the camera.

Troubleshooting a soft, noisy or uneven image

The picture looks soft after changing the TV resolution

Return to the same output mode used for your comparison, then check the game’s image option. A 4K signal can be scaled by the television, while a 1440p signal can use a different scaling path. Resolution changes alone do not identify whether DLSS, SMAA or the TV scaler caused the perceived difference.

DLSS looks sharper in a still image but breaks up during turns

Repeat the movement test and switch to Filmic SMAA T2X. The available analysis supports DLSS as the clarity starting point but does not establish a final motion-performance winner. Keep the option that remains coherent while panning, running and tracking targets.

Edges look harsh after selecting CAS

FidelityFX CAS is a contrast-adaptive sharpening choice, not a higher-resolution mode. If its added contrast makes text, wires or weapon outlines look unnaturally bright, return to DLSS or Filmic SMAA T2X and compare at your normal viewing distance.

The TV reports 60 Hz when you expected 120 Hz

Use 1080p or 1440p; Nintendo limits 120 Hz output to those resolutions. Verify the TV input, cable and display setting, then check the signal while the console is in TV mode. Selecting 2160p/4K intentionally places the output under the 60-fps ceiling.

HDR makes the image look washed out or too dark

Confirm that the television supports HDR, set HDR to compatible software only, and run Adjust HDR again. Check the TV’s picture mode after calibration. Keep RGB range on Automatic unless the TV manual specifies a matching range.

VRR does not appear to work

Install the system update that added TV-mode VRR on September 10, 2026, then confirm that both the display and game support VRR. VRR is a display-synchronization feature; it will not increase the game’s maximum frame rate or sharpen static detail.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

The strongest current conclusion is practical rather than numerical: DLSS is the sensible first choice when your goal is cleaner edges and better-defined busy textures. Filmic SMAA T2X remains an important fallback because motion behavior and artifact tolerance can differ by scene, display and build. FidelityFX CAS is available for sharpening preference, but it should not be presented as a resolution upgrade.

Nintendo’s output specifications establish the mode trade-off: 1080p and 1440p can carry 120 Hz output with compatible equipment, while 2160p/4K TV mode is capped at 60 fps. HDR, ALLM and VRR each depend on compatible hardware and software, and VRR support in TV mode was added in the September 10, 2026 system update. No independent controlled test in the available material supplies a universal sharpness score, frame-time measurement or frame-rate ranking for the three image options. Configure DLSS first, compare Filmic SMAA T2X under real movement, and choose the output mode that matches whether your priority is high refresh or a 4K signal.
