NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound is the closest overall match for SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance on Nintendo Switch 2. Both are side-scrolling ninja action games built around precise attacks, demanding platforming and a classic arcade sensibility. Choose Prince of Persia The Lost Crown if movement and exploration matter more, Streets of Rage 4 for hand-drawn brawling, Hollow Knight for a large interconnected world, or Dead Cells for repeatable runs and build experimentation.
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026. It is a 2D action platformer starring Joe Musashi, with a katana, kunai, ninjutsu, Ninpo, combo attacks, amulets and Ningi tools. Nintendo describes more than a dozen visually distinct stages, platforming puzzles and hidden secrets; the Switch 2 version also has a higher-resolution handheld presentation.

What makes SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance distinctive?
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance combines three ingredients that are not always found together: side-scrolling platforming, combo-driven melee combat and a hand-drawn presentation. You control Joe Musashi after he discovers that his village has been burned and his clan turned to stone. Stages are obstacle-filled and include light puzzle-solving, optional secrets and boss encounters rather than simply moving from one fight to the next.
Recommended Free Tools
Joe’s toolkit gives the game its ninja identity. The katana handles close combat, kunai provide a ranged option, and ninjutsu, Ninpo, amulets and Ningi tools add tactical choices around the basic sword strikes. TechRadar’s review characterizes the loop as platforming, light puzzles and combo-focused combat, while noting that the campaign is more linear than Hollow Knight. That distinction is important: SHINOBI rewards replaying stages for optional challenges and better combat performance, but it is not designed as a vast, freely backtracked metroidvania.

The recommendations below therefore separate direct mechanical matches from games that share only one major quality, such as art direction, exploration or replayability.
The closest overall match: NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound
NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound should be your first stop if what you want is another side-scrolling ninja game. Nintendo describes it as a new entry from the team behind Blasphemous, pairing old-school pick-up-and-play action with modern precision. It has two playable ninja characters, a Ninja Fusion mechanic, platforming and pixel-art visuals. The intended learning curve is easy to understand but difficult to master, making it the strongest alternative for players who enjoy practicing movement and attack timing.

The difference is feel. SHINOBI uses hand-drawn art and a broad collection of tools around Joe Musashi, whereas Ragebound presents a pixel-art interpretation with its own character-switching and fusion system. Expect a different rhythm rather than a one-to-one replacement.
Nintendo lists the Switch version as supported on Switch 2 and gives it a July 31, 2025 release date. That makes it the clearest recommendation for someone searching specifically for “best Switch 2 ninja games” or “side-scrolling ninja games on Switch 2.” Pick it when ninja identity, precision combat and a high mastery ceiling outrank open-world exploration.

Choose by the part of SHINOBI you enjoyed most
For acrobatics, puzzles and exploration: Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is the best choice when the movement between fights matters as much as the fights themselves. Nintendo describes Sargon using sword combat, acrobatic movement, time powers and super abilities while traveling through multiple Persian-inspired biomes. Hidden treasures, quests and ability-based traversal give the game a broader exploration structure than SHINOBI’s more linear stage progression.
The comparison is useful because both games ask you to read hazards, chain movement through obstacle courses and use special abilities to overcome threats. The Lost Crown goes further with a world that opens as Sargon gains powers. You will spend more time returning to earlier areas, looking for routes that were previously inaccessible and solving traversal problems that are integrated into the map.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNintendo marks the Switch version as supported on Switch 2. Choose it for “Switch 2 games with tight combat and platforming” when your priority is fluid movement, environmental puzzles and a sustained sense of discovery rather than a purely stage-based ninja campaign.
For hand-drawn brawler combat: Streets of Rage 4
Streets of Rage 4 is the natural recommendation for players attracted to SHINOBI’s visual style and punchy close-quarters action. Nintendo identifies SHINOBI as coming from the team behind Streets of Rage 4, so the artistic connection is direct. Both emphasize expressive hand-drawn characters, readable attack animations and impact-heavy encounters.
The structure is fundamentally different. Streets of Rage 4 is a beat-’em-up: you advance through a belt-scrolling stage, clearing groups of enemies, instead of navigating a platforming course filled with jumps, secrets and environmental puzzles. Its strength is immediate brawling, with a format that works particularly well for co-op play. If you want to learn enemy spacing, combine attacks and keep a crowd under control, it delivers that pleasure without asking you to master precision platforming.

Use the official Nintendo Switch listing to check the current edition and compatibility information for your region. Select Streets of Rage 4 when the hand-drawn look and arcade-style combat are more important to you than ninja weapons, vertical traversal or hidden platforming routes.
For deep exploration: Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is a less direct substitute, but it is the strongest recommendation for players who wish SHINOBI offered a much larger world. TechRadar specifically uses Hollow Knight as a contrast: SHINOBI is more linear, while Hollow Knight is built around an interconnected metroidvania map. Exploration, discovery and ability-driven access are the central activities rather than optional additions to a sequence of stages.
That makes Hollow Knight a good follow-up if the secrets and environmental routes in SHINOBI are the parts you want expanded. Progress depends on understanding how areas connect, remembering blocked paths and acquiring abilities that change where you can go. The game also places more emphasis on atmosphere and long-form discovery than on a hand-drawn ninja presentation.
Hollow Knight is listed as a Nintendo Switch product. Because the supplied product details do not state a separate Switch 2 enhancement, check the current Nintendo eShop entry for your territory before buying. Choose it for “games like SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance” only if you are comfortable trading direct ninja identity and stage-by-stage pacing for a deeper interconnected world.
For replayable action: Dead Cells
Dead Cells fits readers who value fast combat and repeated attempts over a fixed, linear campaign. Nintendo’s official Switch product listing establishes the game on Switch; its broader action-platform design is the relevant comparison here. Runs encourage experimentation, and each attempt gives you another chance to refine movement, weapon choices and combat decisions.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Unlike SHINOBI, Dead Cells is organized around run-based progression and build experimentation. You are not replaying a set of hand-drawn ninja stages simply to find every secret; you are repeatedly assembling a route and loadout, learning from failure and pushing farther. That structure creates a different kind of mastery, one based on adaptation as much as memorizing stage layouts.
Check the current Switch 2 compatibility information for the edition sold in your region. Dead Cells is the right pick when your search is really for “replayable action games on Switch 2,” and a less suitable choice if you specifically want a katana-focused story campaign with Joe Musashi’s ninja arsenal.

How the games compare on the decisions that matter
Ninja identity and melee feel
SHINOBI and NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound are the only two recommendations built first around being ninja games. SHINOBI’s identity comes from Joe Musashi’s katana, kunai, Ninpo and Ningi tools, while Ragebound uses two playable ninjas and Ninja Fusion. The other games borrow selected qualities but change the fantasy: Sargon is a Persian warrior with time powers, Streets of Rage 4 is an urban brawler, Hollow Knight centers on an insectoid knight and Dead Cells focuses on a reanimated fighter and changing builds.
Platforming precision
SHINOBI places platforming alongside combat in every stage. Ragebound is the closest match in a side-scrolling format and is designed around precision. The Lost Crown makes acrobatic traversal a defining feature, often linking movement to abilities and puzzles. Streets of Rage 4 minimizes platforming in favor of a belt-scrolling lane, while Hollow Knight and Dead Cells use platforming inside larger exploration or run-based systems.

If you want a mostly directed sequence of stages with optional secrets, stay with SHINOBI or choose Ragebound. The Lost Crown and Hollow Knight are better for ability-gated exploration: progress changes as new powers reveal routes, treasures and previously unreachable areas. Dead Cells offers discovery through repeated runs and builds rather than one persistent map. Streets of Rage 4 is the least exploration-focused option.

Difficulty and mastery
Ragebound is explicitly pitched as easy to learn but hard to truly master, making it the clearest choice for challenge seekers. SHINOBI’s combo system, optional challenges and boss fights provide reasons to replay stages and improve execution. The Lost Crown shifts mastery toward movement, timing and puzzle navigation. Hollow Knight emphasizes learning an interconnected world and its encounters. Dead Cells asks you to adapt to each run, while Streets of Rage 4 rewards crowd control and cooperative coordination.
Art direction
SHINOBI and Streets of Rage 4 share a hand-drawn visual lineage through their development team. Ragebound uses pixel art and a deliberately retro presentation. The Lost Crown uses a Persian-inspired world, Hollow Knight has a distinct illustrated subterranean aesthetic, and Dead Cells uses a stylized action-platform look built around readable sprites and effects. Choose on visual taste as much as mechanics; none reproduces SHINOBI’s exact combination of hand-drawn ninja imagery and stage-based action.
Switch 2 compatibility and presentation
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance has an official Switch 2 release dated September 24, 2026, and Nintendo specifically calls out higher resolution in handheld mode. That enhancement matters if you mostly play portable: the hand-drawn artwork and fast effects should appear sharper on the Switch 2 screen.

The product details for Streets of Rage 4, Hollow Knight and Dead Cells establish Nintendo Switch listings but do not provide a separate Switch 2 enhancement claim. Before purchasing any of those three, open the current Nintendo eShop page for your country and verify the compatibility label, edition and update information shown there.

A practical buying path
- Start with your non-negotiable. If you want a ninja protagonist and side-scrolling combat, choose NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound. If you want exploration, choose Prince of Persia The Lost Crown or Hollow Knight.
- Decide whether you prefer stages or a world. SHINOBI and Ragebound are stage-oriented. The Lost Crown and Hollow Knight are built around a persistent world. Dead Cells replaces both models with repeated runs, and Streets of Rage 4 uses a linear beat-’em-up route.
- Match the combat texture. Select Streets of Rage 4 for crowd-clearing brawls, Ragebound or SHINOBI for ninja precision, the Lost Crown for swordplay integrated with acrobatics, Hollow Knight for exploration-led encounters, or Dead Cells for rapid build-driven action.
- Check the edition before paying. Verify the Switch 2 support label, physical or digital format, regional release information and any available enhancement notes on the current Nintendo listing.
- Use replay value as the tie-breaker. SHINOBI offers optional challenges, secrets and boss fights; Ragebound targets mastery; the Lost Crown and Hollow Knight reward additional exploration; Streets of Rage 4 suits repeat brawling and co-op; Dead Cells is purpose-built around repeated runs.
Which game should you play first?
Choose NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound if your question is literally “What is the closest game to SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance?” It matches the ninja theme, side-scrolling format, precision emphasis and old-school action priorities while remaining its own game through pixel art and Ninja Fusion.
Choose Prince of Persia The Lost Crown when movement and exploration are the reason SHINOBI appealed to you. Choose Streets of Rage 4 when the hand-drawn combat style matters most. Choose Hollow Knight when you want a much deeper interconnected world, and choose Dead Cells when you would rather replay fast action with changing builds than follow a fixed campaign.
