melonDS is the best starting point for most people. It is open source, documented for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, and combines accurate DS emulation with upscaling, multiple dual-screen layouts, saves, cheats, joystick input, and ongoing work on Wi‑Fi and DSi features. On Windows, DeSmuME is the strongest mature alternative. On iPhone and iPad, Delta is the clearest choice because it is distributed through the App Store, runs DS games with the melonDS core, and supports controllers, save states, fast-forwarding, syncing, cheats, and DS multiplayer features.

Quick recommendations by device

Your best option depends more on installation route and input needs than on a single universal compatibility ranking. No official source in this guide publishes a defensible percentage for compatibility, accuracy, frame rate, user count, or market share, so the choices below are based on documented features and distribution.

Device First choice Alternative Why Main caution
Windows melonDS DeSmuME melonDS offers cross-platform development, OpenGL rendering, 3D upscaling, saves, cheats, joystick input, and multiple screen layouts. DeSmuME adds a mature desktop feature set with turbo, filters, recording, 3D upscaling, and gamepad support. DeSmuME’s project site names 0.9.13 as its latest named desktop release; check that a download is from a trustworthy, current build source.
Android melonDS DeSmuME port or fork melonDS publishes an Android route and documents joystick input, saves, cheats, dual-screen layouts, and cross-platform support. Many DeSmuME Android packages are ports or forks. Verify the developer, permissions, source, and update date before installing.
iPhone or iPad Delta melonDS iOS route Delta is an App Store app for non-jailbroken devices and uses melonDS for Nintendo DS emulation. It documents controller support, save states, fast-forwarding, syncing, cheats, and multiplayer. App Store availability, regional distribution, and iOS requirements can change. What a Nintendo DS emulator does

A DS emulator reproduces the console’s two screens, ARM processors, touch input, microphone, buttons, lid controls, real-time clock, save hardware, and other system behavior in software. You provide your own legally obtained game data, then the emulator translates the game’s instructions for Windows, Android, or iOS. The emulator is not the game itself, and installing one does not automatically provide ROMs, BIOS files, firmware, or copyrighted artwork.

DS games use two displays with different roles: the upper screen is normally visual, while the lower screen accepts touch or stylus input. A useful emulator therefore needs more than basic video output. Look for a layout that keeps both screens readable, configurable touch controls, physical-controller mappings, reliable save states, fast-forward or turbo, and a way to handle games that use the microphone, lid sensor, or clock.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

melonDS: the strongest all-around choice

Why it leads the list

The official melonDS site describes it as an open-source Nintendo DS emulator for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Its core is described as near-complete and includes JIT recompilation, which can improve performance by translating blocks of DS instructions efficiently on supported devices. OpenGL rendering enables higher-resolution 3D output instead of limiting games to the original handheld resolution.

melonDS documents a real-time clock, microphone support, lid controls, joystick support, save states, cheats, and several display layouts. Those features matter in games that check the time, expect a microphone blow, pause when the lid closes, or require a stylus gesture. You can choose a side-by-side, stacked, or other layout that suits a monitor, tablet, or phone rather than accepting one fixed arrangement.

Features still being developed

The project identifies Wi‑Fi and local multiplayer, DSi functionality, and GBA-slot emulation as work in progress. That wording is important: do not assume every online mode, DSi title, or Slot-2 accessory works merely because the menu contains a related option. Test the specific game and build you intend to use, and keep an original-device fallback for features that depend on hardware the emulator does not yet reproduce.

Best use cases

  • Use melonDS on Windows when you want one project that can also move to Android or iOS.
  • Use it on Android when you prefer a documented, cross-platform project over an unidentified fork.
  • Use its joystick and layout options with a Bluetooth controller and a phone stand for longer sessions.
  • Use save states for convenience, but keep normal in-game saves as a second copy.

DeSmuME: a mature Windows desktop alternative

What it offers

DeSmuME is a free, open-source emulator centered on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its project site also describes Android and iOS ports or forks, but those mobile packages are not the same as the main desktop distribution. The published feature list includes turbo mode, save and restore states, Action Replay cheats, pixel and texture filters, screen magnification, 3D upscaling, Slot-2 emulation, high-level BIOS support, AVI and WAV recording, and gamepad support.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Turbo is useful for slow dialogue, grinding, or repeated animations. Filters can soften blocky pixels or change the appearance of 3D scenes, while magnification helps when a game’s text is too small at native size. Recording to AVI or WAV is useful for demonstrations and archival work. Slot-2 emulation is relevant to games and accessories that expect hardware in the DS’s lower cartridge slot, although support is title- and feature-dependent.

Version and download caution

The project site names version 0.9.13 for Windows, macOS, and Linux and says compatibility improved in that release. “Latest named release” is not the same as a promise that every mirror is current. Compare the version, operating-system architecture, release date, and publisher information before running an executable. Avoid repacked installers that add unrelated software or request permissions an emulator does not need.

When to choose it over melonDS

  • Choose DeSmuME if you specifically need its documented recording workflow, turbo controls, filter choices, or established desktop interface.
  • Choose it when a game behaves better in your own tests on DeSmuME; emulator compatibility can vary by title and build.
  • Prefer melonDS when you want the same project on Android or iOS, or when current cross-platform development is more important than DeSmuME’s desktop-oriented feature list.

Delta on iPhone and iPad

Why it is the clearest iOS route

Delta’s README describes it as “an all-in-one classic video game emulator for non-jailbroken iOS devices.” It supports Nintendo DS and identifies melonDS as the DS core. That gives iPhone and iPad users a normal App Store distribution path instead of requiring a jailbreak or an unknown enterprise-signed package.

The App Store listing records updates in 2025 that added or expanded DS online multiplayer through community Nintendo WFC servers and fixed several DS display and audio issues. Online behavior can depend on the game, server community, network, and current app version, so treat those features as version-sensitive rather than guaranteed for every title.

  • Secure Hold: Our PopSockets adhesive phone grip gives your cell phone a secure, comfortable hold in hand to help prevent drops while texting, taking photos, or scrolling on the go. Designed to stick firmly to most phone cases and devices.
  • Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
  • Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.
  • Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Controllers and input

Delta documents support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X, and MFi controllers, plus Bluetooth and wired keyboards. Mappings are customizable. A controller handles the D-pad and buttons while the phone screen remains available for touch-heavy lower-screen actions. For games that require precise stylus work, a finger or compatible stylus is still necessary even when a gamepad is connected.

Convenience features

  • Save states: Store a snapshot at a chosen moment instead of waiting for an in-game save point.
  • Fast-forwarding: Move through slow scenes or travel more quickly; excessive speed can make timing-based input difficult.
  • Syncing: Delta documents Google Drive and Dropbox syncing, useful when moving saves between supported devices. Confirm the account and sync status before deleting local data.
  • Action Replay cheats: DS cheat support is documented, but codes can be game-, region-, and revision-specific.

Is melonDS better than DeSmuME?

There is no universal winner. melonDS is the better default when you value one open-source project across desktop and mobile, modern rendering, configurable dual-screen layouts, and documented Android and iOS support. DeSmuME is the better fit when your priority is a mature desktop toolkit with turbo, recording, filters, magnification, and Slot-2 features.

Decision factor melonDS DeSmuME

Recording Not stated in the cited feature description AVI and WAV recording listed by the project
Wi‑Fi and DSi Work in progress on the official site Availability depends on the desktop build or mobile fork; not established as a universal feature

Install both on Windows if you have enough storage and want a practical compatibility check. Use the same legally obtained game dump, keep settings conservative first, and compare loading, touch input, audio, saves, and the particular feature that matters to you. Do not treat one emulator’s success with one title as proof that every game behaves the same way.

How to choose an Android DS emulator safely

Start with the official melonDS route

  1. Open the melonDS project’s official download page from a link you can verify independently.
  2. Choose the Android package that matches your device and note the publisher, version, and release date.
  3. Review requested permissions. An emulator may need access to selected game files and saves, but unexpected access to contacts, SMS, or unrelated services is a warning sign.
  4. Install, open the app, and point its game directory at your own legally obtained dumps.
  5. Configure a dual-screen layout, touch controls, audio, and a physical controller before changing graphics settings.
  6. Load one test game, create an in-game save, close the app, and confirm that both the in-game save and a save state can be restored.

Handling DeSmuME Android ports

DeSmuME’s site describes Android ports or forks rather than one clearly defined official Android package. That distinction matters. A fork may lag behind the desktop project, change features, bundle advertising, or use a different save format. Check the repository or publisher identity, release history, permissions, issue tracker, and whether the package is signed by the expected developer. Do not sideload a random APK simply because its name resembles the desktop project.

Android performance tuning

  • Begin at native or modestly increased 3D resolution, then raise it only if the game remains smooth.
  • Disable heavy texture filters when audio stutters or touch input becomes delayed.
  • Use a stacked layout in portrait mode and a side-by-side layout in landscape mode if both screens are readable.
  • Keep the phone cool during long sessions; thermal throttling can look like an emulator compatibility problem.
  • Back up save files before switching between apps or forks, because formats and folder locations may differ.

How to set up DS emulation on Windows

  1. Download melonDS or DeSmuME from the project’s verified distribution channel. Confirm the operating system, architecture, version, and release date.
  2. Extract or install the emulator in a folder you control. Avoid launching unknown executables from a temporary archive or a repacked installer.
  3. Open the input settings and map every DS button, the stylus or pointer, microphone input if needed, and a hotkey for fast-forward or save states.
  4. Select a screen layout. Side-by-side works well on a wide monitor; a vertical stack more closely matches the handheld’s arrangement and can leave room for a larger touch area.
  5. Set rendering to OpenGL and increase 3D resolution gradually. If a game shows missing polygons, flicker, or incorrect effects, return to the default renderer or resolution.
  6. Choose a save directory outside the emulator’s installation folder if you want easy backups. Make an in-game save, then test a save state separately.
  7. Load a game you own and test menus, touch controls, audio, microphone prompts, sleep or lid behavior, and any multiplayer feature you actually need.

Windows troubleshooting

  • Black screen or crash: reduce 3D scaling, switch rendering options, and test without filters or cheats.
  • Controls work on the upper screen but not the lower screen: revisit pointer mapping and the active-screen hotkey; DS touch input is separate from ordinary buttons.
  • Audio crackles: lower enhancement settings, close background workloads, and test whether the issue follows one game or every game.
  • Save state will not load: use the same emulator family and game revision that created it, and retain a normal in-game save.
  • Multiplayer fails: confirm that the feature is supported by the specific build, game, network, and server arrangement. melonDS lists Wi‑Fi and local multiplayer as work in progress.

Can you play DS games on iPhone without jailbreaking?

Yes, Delta is designed for non-jailbroken iOS devices and is listed in the App Store. Install the current listing available in your region, connect a controller if desired, and import only game files you are entitled to use. Because App Store rules, iOS requirements, and regional availability can change, verify those details on the listing before relying on a particular setup.

  1. Install Delta from the current App Store listing.
  2. Pair a supported Bluetooth or MFi controller through iOS if you want physical buttons, or use the on-screen controls.
  3. Import your legally obtained DS game file through the file workflow provided by iOS and Delta.
  4. Choose a screen layout that leaves enough room for touch input on the lower display.
  5. Test an in-game save before enabling cloud syncing, then confirm that the synchronized copy appears on the intended account.
  6. Update Delta only through a source you trust and recheck multiplayer or display behavior after major updates.

Controllers, touch input, and dual-screen layouts

A DS emulator has two different control problems: physical buttons and a touch screen. A Bluetooth gamepad solves the first but not the second. For action games, a controller reduces thumb fatigue and keeps the display unobstructed. For drawing, typing, map navigation, or microphone-driven activities, you still need responsive touch or pointer input.

Playing situation Practical layout Recommended input
Desktop monitor Side-by-side screens with enlarged 3D output USB or Bluetooth gamepad plus mouse pointer for touch
Phone in portrait Stacked screens with a larger lower touch panel On-screen buttons or a compact controller; finger or stylus for touch
Tablet in landscape Side-by-side or slightly offset screens Bluetooth controller and direct touch input
Text-heavy game Prioritize readable lower-screen text over maximum 3D scaling Keyboard support where available, otherwise touch and controller together

Delta documents support for PS4, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X, and MFi controllers, as well as Bluetooth and wired keyboards. melonDS documents joystick input. Other controllers may work through the operating system but are not guaranteed by those feature descriptions, so test button mapping before buying accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Saves, cheats, syncing, and backups

Use two kinds of saves

In-game saves are written by the game and are generally the most portable. Save states capture the emulator’s complete moment-to-moment state and are convenient for retrying difficult sections, but they can break when you change emulator versions, game revisions, firmware settings, or core implementations. Keep both: save normally in the game, then use a state as a convenience copy.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Cheat safety

DeSmuME lists Action Replay cheats, and Delta documents Action Replay cheats for DS. Codes can be region-specific and may corrupt progress or cause repeated crashes. Make a clean in-game save first, enable one code at a time, and disable it if graphics, audio, or progression behaves unexpectedly.

Cloud synchronization

Delta documents syncing through Google Drive and Dropbox. Treat synchronization as backup assistance, not proof that every device has the newest file. Before switching devices, confirm the last sync time, close the emulator cleanly, and keep an offline copy of important saves. Never overwrite a known-good save with an unverified cloud copy.

Legality and responsible game files

Emulators are software, while ROMs, BIOS files, firmware, copied cartridges, and downloaded game images raise separate copyright and licensing questions. The melonDS FAQ says the emulator is legal to use and advises users to respect copyright and use ROMs they own. That is general guidance, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Follow the law where you live and the rights attached to your own dumps, backups, BIOS files, and online services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a download labeled “free ROM” is authorized, that owning a console gives you unrestricted rights to every download, or that a BIOS file can be redistributed freely. Keep personal dumps secure, avoid sharing copyrighted files, and check a game’s license before using online features or community servers.

Which emulator should you install?

  • Choose melonDS on Windows if you want the best cross-platform default, OpenGL upscaling, configurable screens, saves, cheats, and joystick input.
  • Choose DeSmuME on Windows if turbo, recording, filters, magnification, Slot-2 emulation, or its established desktop workflow is your priority.
  • Choose melonDS on Android when you want the project’s documented Android package and cross-platform feature set. Treat third-party DeSmuME ports as separate software that must be verified.
  • Choose Delta on iPhone or iPad for the simplest non-jailbroken App Store route, especially if you need controller support, save states, fast-forwarding, syncing, cheats, or DS multiplayer options.
  • Test rather than assume when a specific game, accessory, microphone feature, DSi function, or multiplayer mode is essential. Emulator behavior depends on the title, revision, operating system, hardware, and build.
