Managed plans differ substantially. “Managed” may mean automated software updates and a daily snapshot, or it may include active monitoring, support escalation, a documented recovery process and a contractual uptime commitment. Ask exactly what is included rather than treating the label as a standard.
Self-managed VPS hosting
A VPS gives you administrator access and a predictable virtual machine bill. You choose the Nextcloud version, database, web server, apps, storage layout and backup destination. Cloudbasedbackup
Cloudbasedbackup reports three simple tiers: €4.90 per month for 500 GB and up to 10 users, €9.90 per month for 1 TB and up to 25 users, and €39.90 per month for 5 TB and up to 25 users. It states that data remains in German data centers.
The provider also notes that compliance depends on the customer’s own processes. That qualification is important: a German location does not by itself make your sharing rules, retention schedule, access controls or incident procedures compliant. Request the DPA, sub-processor list, backup location and restore procedure in writing.
Stellarhosted
Stellarhosted markets EU hosting, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance, with updates, monitoring and backups included. Reported plans are Standard at €99 per month for up to 10 users and 10 GB, Premium at €249 per month, and Custom from €499 per month.
The Standard allowance is much smaller than the multi-terabyte plans above, so compare the actual storage and user allocation rather than the plan name. Ask whether the ISO 27001 certificate covers the specific Nextcloud hosting service, which entity holds the certificate and what support and recovery objectives are contractual.

LibreCloud
LibreCloud lists Personal, Business and Enterprise tiers. The Personal tier is reported at about $7.99 per month for five users and 1 TB. The service advertises GDPR and HIPAA compliance, but the data-center locations were not verified in the available material.
For regulated workloads, treat the compliance wording as a starting point for due diligence. Confirm where primary data, backups and support access are located, and obtain a DPA that identifies subprocessors and international-transfer safeguards.
Cloudamo
One roundup reports Cloudamo plans from $5 per month for 100 GB, with data centers in the United States, Canada, the EU and Singapore. The figure and locations were reported by a roundup rather than a retrieved primary pricing page. GDPR suitability therefore depends on the region you select and on the provider’s contractual terms.

IONOS publishes a Nextcloud hosting guide and appears in hosting roundups. Managed Nextcloud pricing is reported as custom quote rather than a fixed public plan. One roundup calls IONOS an official Nextcloud Platinum Partner, but the retrieved evidence does not confirm that status. Check the current Nextcloud partner directory and ask IONOS to identify the exact service covered by any partner designation.
Self-managed VPS options
Hetzner VPS products are commonly used for self-managed Nextcloud, but the available material does not provide a comparable current plan price. With any VPS, the provider supplies infrastructure; you supply the operating expertise, backup design and compliance controls.

Do not compare these numbers as if they were equivalent retail products. A per-terabyte plan may limit apps and support, while a higher-priced service may include monitoring, contractual assistance or compliance documentation. Currency, tax, billing term, storage type and overage rules can also change the effective cost.
GDPR and data-location due diligence
Nextcloud provides technical features such as access controls, audit logs and data-export tools. Those features help, but compliance also depends on how your organization configures and operates the instance. An EU-based server can be operated in a GDPR-compliant way; location alone is not a compliance guarantee.

Documents to request before subscribing
- Data Processing Agreement: confirm the provider acts as processor where appropriate, lists security measures and defines breach-notification responsibilities.
- Sub-processor list: identify cloud infrastructure, backup, support and email vendors that may access or store personal data.
- Exact data-center location: ask separately about primary storage, database, file-object storage, backups and support access. “EU hosting” may not describe every copy.
- Certificate scope: if ISO 27001 is claimed, verify the certificate, issuing body, validity and whether it covers the specific managed Nextcloud service rather than another business unit.
- Retention and deletion: establish how long deleted files, snapshots and logs remain and how data is erased at contract termination.
- Incident and recovery terms: obtain restoration objectives, support channels and the process for requesting a restore.
Questions for non-EU regions
If a provider offers US, Canadian or Singaporean locations, ask which region will hold each copy and what transfer mechanism and contractual safeguards apply. Select an EU region when that matches your risk assessment, but still review the DPA and subprocessors.
How to choose a provider
- Count active users and storage: include shared folders, version history, trash, previews and backup copies in your capacity estimate. A “1 TB” allowance may refer only to live files.
- List required apps: write down calendar, contacts, office integration, workflow and authentication apps. Managed hosts may block custom plugins or delay major versions.
- Set your recovery requirement: decide how much data you can lose (recovery-point objective) and how quickly service must return (recovery-time objective). Reject plans that cannot state backup frequency and restoration procedure.
- Choose the operating model: select managed hosting if maintenance must be delegated; select a VPS only if a named person or team can own patching and recovery.
- Verify legal and geographic terms: request the DPA, subprocessors and exact locations before paying, not after migration.
- Test support: ask a technical question about upgrades, restores and app restrictions. The quality and specificity of the answer is more informative than a generic “24/7 support” badge.
- Run a pilot: create test users, import a representative folder, exercise sharing and external access, and perform a restore test before moving your authoritative data.
Migration and launch checklist for managed hosting
- Record the current Nextcloud version, enabled apps, user list, groups, storage quotas, external-storage mounts and authentication integrations.
- Obtain a written export or migration plan from the new host. Clarify whether it migrates files only or also calendars, contacts, shares, comments, versions, trash and app data.

Choosing on storage price alone
Symptom: the cheapest plan fills quickly or cannot retain versions and backups. Fix: calculate live data plus growth, version history, trash, previews and any separate backup quota; ask how overages are billed.
Assuming “EU” means every copy is in the EU
Symptom: support or backup subprocessors are outside the selected region. Fix: request locations for primary data, backups and support access in the DPA and sub-processor documentation.
Installing apps a managed host does not allow
Symptom: a required plugin is blocked or breaks after a provider update. Fix: obtain the permitted-app list and version policy during the pilot; move to a VPS only when you can operate it safely.
Believing a certification settles compliance

Can I move from managed Nextcloud to a VPS later?
