Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe right alternative depends on what you mean by “monitoring web performance.” Browser experience, synthetic checks, backend traces, infrastructure metrics and logs are different parts of the picture. New Relic and Sentry overlap in some monitoring workflows, but neither label guarantees complete coverage across those layers. Shortlist tools by the signals and incident workflows you need, then test them with representative telemetry rather than picking a universal winner.
What should a web performance monitoring platform cover?
Start by describing the questions your team needs to answer during an incident. A slow page may require browser data; a failing request may need a trace through backend services; a recurring issue may also call for logs, deployment context or infrastructure metrics. Check each product and plan for the specific capabilities you need instead of treating “observability” as proof that every layer is included.

| Layer | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Browser and real-user experience | Whether it records real-user monitoring (RUM), the browser measures you need, and session capture if your workflow requires it. |
| Synthetic monitoring | Whether you can run checks from relevant locations and whether those checks are included in the product and plan you are evaluating. |
| Application diagnosis | Distributed traces, service relationships, profiling, error tracking and the ability to connect a trace to relevant logs. |
| Infrastructure and telemetry | Metrics and logs for the hosts, containers or other services in scope, including the retention and data controls your organization requires. |
| Incident workflow | Whether teams can bring metrics, traces, logs, deployments and alerts together when investigating an issue. |
Which alternatives are worth evaluating?
The descriptions below are shortlist positions, not independent head-to-head test results. Several of the comparisons available for these products are vendor-authored, so confirm current scope and fit in product documentation and a workload-specific trial.

| Candidate | Consider it when | Trade-off or validation point |
|---|---|---|
| Datadog | You want to assess a managed platform spanning multiple monitoring signals and broad integrations. A New Relic-authored Datadog alternatives guide describes infrastructure monitoring, distributed tracing, RUM and synthetic monitoring. | Check support for your web frameworks and required browser measures, and model the effect of hosts and custom metrics on your usage-based estimate. |
| Dynatrace | Automated discovery and broad application and infrastructure coverage are priorities. Its reviewed product description includes RUM and synthetic monitoring. | Confirm which capabilities fit your deployment and model the product’s separate billing units against your actual workload. |
| Grafana Cloud or a Grafana stack | Your team values open standards, already uses Grafana or Prometheus-style workflows, or wants control over data sources. Grafana’s comparison material emphasizes OpenTelemetry and portability. | Check which signal paths and workflows are managed for your setup. A self-managed stack can shift setup, storage, upgrades and reliability work to your team; full observability may require operating multiple components. |
| Splunk Observability Cloud | Your organization already uses Splunk or wants to evaluate its observability offering. | Vendor-authored comparisons describe unified monitoring and trace features, but module combinations and onboarding may affect setup and cost. Validate both against your intended configuration. |
| AppDynamics | Your organization is large and is assessing application performance monitoring with business-transaction visibility. | The reviewed comparison describes connecting performance to business impact. Confirm current product scope, deployment fit and commercial terms directly with the vendor. |
| SigNoz | You want to assess OpenTelemetry, self-hosting and control over telemetry pipelines. The reviewed comparison describes metrics, traces and logs in one interface. | Self-management adds operational work. Validate production maturity and support against the requirements of your own environment. |
How to narrow the shortlist
Use the same requirements for every candidate. That makes it easier to distinguish a missing capability from one that is available only in a particular plan, module or deployment model.

- Web experience: Decide whether you need RUM, session capture, Core Web Vitals or equivalent browser measures, and synthetic checks from particular geographies.
- Backend diagnosis: Specify required trace depth, service maps, profiling, error tracking and trace-to-log correlation.
- Instrumentation: List your languages and frameworks; verify supported instrumentation, automatic versus manual setup, OpenTelemetry compatibility and migration effort.
- Operational model: Choose between SaaS and self-hosting, then account for retention, data residency, maintenance and the expertise needed to keep the system reliable.
- Cost drivers: Estimate hosts, ingestion, custom metrics and cardinality, retention, query volume, seats and optional modules—not just an advertised starting rate.
Compare cost using your workload, not entry prices
Headline prices are not directly comparable when products meter different things. Dynatrace’s current pricing structure lists distinct units across product areas, including hosts, memory-GiB-hours, pods, ingestion, retention and queries. Those units describe different consumption dimensions; they are not a like-for-like price comparison.
Build an estimate from the services you will monitor, expected telemetry volume and cardinality, retention period, query needs and required modules. Use each vendor’s current rate card for the product and deployment you are considering, and confirm how its units apply to your workload. Do not infer which platform is cheaper from the phrase “cheaper Datadog alternative for APM”; that wording is a reader query, not evidence of a price advantage for any candidate.

Run a trial that tests the work your team actually does
- Write down a small set of incident questions. Include at least one browser-facing issue and one backend issue if both are in scope. Define what evidence would let an engineer diagnose each one.
- Send representative telemetry. Use the languages, frameworks, services and instrumentation approach you expect to run in production. Record any manual setup and migration work needed.
- Exercise the investigation workflow. Check whether your team can move between relevant browser data, traces, metrics, logs, deployments and alerts without losing useful context.
- Check coverage and controls. Verify the required signals, retention, data residency and synthetic-check locations in the exact plan or deployment under evaluation.
- Calculate expected cost and operating effort. Apply the vendor’s current units to expected usage, and include configuration, maintenance and reliability work where the team will own it.
- Compare findings against the same requirements. Keep vendor descriptions as candidate-discovery material, not proof of superiority; resolve gaps with current documentation and a hands-on trial.
When a managed service or self-hosted stack makes more sense
Managed services can reduce the infrastructure work involved in running the monitoring platform. Open instrumentation and self-hosting can offer more control over telemetry paths and data sources, but they do not make operations disappear: setup, storage, upgrades and reliability become part of the team’s workload. Grafana’s flexibility may also mean more configuration and correlation choices, while SigNoz’s self-managed option should be assessed against the support and production requirements of the specific environment.
Choose the operating model your team can sustain, not only the one that appears most flexible on paper. If you already have Grafana or Prometheus-style workflows, evaluate whether Grafana Cloud’s managed approach fits those workflows before committing to operating a stack yourself.
