Best Network Settings for Xbox Cloud Gaming—and the PS5 Compatibility Reality

No PS5 network setting can officially enable Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s supported-device information does not list PlayStation 5, so changing DNS, Wi-Fi channels, bandwidth limits or router settings cannot turn the console into a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming client. If you use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device, Microsoft’s guidance is to prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and provide the published bandwidth for that device category. On PS5 itself, the supported cloud option is Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming for eligible games.

First, separate compatibility from connection quality

Cloud gaming has two independent requirements:

  • Service and device support: the provider must offer a client for the device, region and account type.
  • Network quality: the device needs enough throughput and a stable, low-jitter path to the service.

A fast internet connection satisfies only the second condition. Microsoft’s official Xbox Cloud Gaming device information lists supported categories, but PlayStation 5 is not one of them. That means there is no official PS5 setting, Ethernet cable, DNS change or router configuration that makes Xbox Cloud Gaming available on the console.

This distinction matters because advice written for an Xbox console, PC, tablet or phone can improve that device’s stream while still being irrelevant to an unsupported PS5 client. Treat the following Xbox settings as guidance for a listed supported device, not as a PS5 workaround.

What to use for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device

Choose wired Ethernet when practical

Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 setup guidance recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible. A cable avoids the radio interference, band steering and signal loss that can affect Wi-Fi. Connect the supported gaming device directly to a LAN port on the router or access point, then check that the device reports a wired connection before starting a stream.

TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router, 2025 PCMag Editors' Choice | 2.5Gbps WAN Port for Gaming & Streaming, 6GHz Band, 160MHz, OneMesh, Dual-Core CPU, VPN & WPA3 (Archer AXE75)
  • Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
  • WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
  • Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

Ethernet does not increase the service’s device compatibility. It only gives a supported client a more predictable local link. A cable can also help a PS5’s own PlayStation cloud stream, but it cannot make Xbox Cloud Gaming run on PS5.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi if a cable is not practical

Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page identifies 5 GHz Wi-Fi as the preferred wireless option for best performance. On a dual-band router, make sure the supported device is actually associated with the 5 GHz network rather than assuming that a single network name selected the faster band.

Place the device close enough to the access point for a strong signal, keep large obstructions and sources of interference away from the router, and avoid switching between access points while playing. These steps improve consistency; they do not change Microsoft’s supported-device list.

Meet the published bandwidth guidance

Microsoft gives different best-performance figures by device category:

Device category Microsoft’s published best-performance rate How to interpret it
Mobile devices 10 Mbps A service guideline, not a guarantee of perfect play
Consoles, PCs and tablets 20 Mbps The figure Microsoft publishes for best performance in these categories

Xbox also notes that performance depends on the connection, the user’s location, the device and other factors. Therefore, a speed test that exceeds the published rate does not promise smooth streaming. Latency, packet loss, congestion and the route to the data center can still produce delay or image quality changes.

Read the numbers correctly

The figures above are not minimum guarantees, and they are not interchangeable between services. The 10 Mbps figure is for mobile devices; Microsoft places consoles, PCs and tablets in the 20 Mbps category. A test result is meaningful only when it is taken on the device and connection that will carry the stream.

Download speed is not the whole connection. Upload capacity can matter when a service establishes a session or communicates control data, and a busy household can consume otherwise adequate capacity. A high headline speed can therefore coexist with stutter if another device is uploading a backup or downloading a large file at the same time.

Likewise, a speed test to a nearby test server may not follow the same route as a cloud-gaming session. Treat the result as a check of available capacity at that moment, then compare it with behavior during an actual session. Repeat the test at the hours when you normally play rather than relying on a single daytime result.

A practical setup sequence for supported Xbox hardware

  1. Verify the client first. Confirm that the console, computer, tablet or mobile device, browser or app, account and region are covered by Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming information.
  2. Start with Ethernet. Connect the device to the router or access point with a cable and confirm the operating system reports a wired link. If the cable run is impractical, continue with 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  3. Confirm the wireless band. On a dual-band network, inspect the device’s connection details and verify 5 GHz. Do not assume that selecting one shared network name guarantees that band.
  4. Test at the playing position. Run a speed test beside the device, over the same cable or Wi-Fi link used for gaming. Record download, upload, latency and any packet-loss indication.
  5. Test under normal household load. Repeat during your usual playing period. Temporarily pause downloads, cloud backups, video uploads and other high-volume activity so you can see whether competition for capacity is the cause.
  6. Change one thing at a time. Compare Ethernet with 5 GHz, or the usual location with a closer access point, rather than changing several router settings at once. That makes an improvement identifiable.
  7. Restart once if necessary. Reboot the router and supported client when the connection has become unstable, then test again. A restart can clear a transient fault, but it cannot replace a supported device or adequate service access.

If the client is not supported, stop after the first step. Better throughput, a new DNS server or a different wireless channel cannot create an official application or authorization path.

How to check the connection before blaming the settings

Use this order when diagnosing a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device:

  1. Confirm the device is supported. Check Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming device information for the exact hardware, browser or app, account and region. Do this before changing the router.
  2. Identify the link type. Prefer Ethernet. If using Wi-Fi, inspect the device’s network details and verify that it is connected to 5 GHz on a dual-band network.
  3. Run a speed test at the playing location. Test over the same cable or Wi-Fi link used for gaming, not only beside the router. Compare the result with Microsoft’s published figure for the device category.
  4. Repeat at the time you normally play. Evening congestion can produce a different result from a quiet daytime test. Record download speed, upload speed, latency and any packet-loss indication.
  5. Reduce competing traffic temporarily. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads and other high-volume activity while testing. If the stream improves, the local network was competing for capacity.
  6. Restart the network path once. Reboot the router and the supported client if the connection has become unstable, then retest. A restart is a diagnostic step, not a substitute for meeting the service requirements.

If the device is unsupported, stop at step one: better results from the later steps cannot create an official client.

Why common “PS5 fixes” do not enable Xbox Cloud Gaming

Changing DNS

DNS selects or resolves internet addresses; it does not add an Xbox Cloud Gaming application or make Sony’s operating system an approved Xbox client. A different DNS provider may alter name-resolution behavior, but it is not an official compatibility method.

Changing Wi-Fi channels

Choosing a less congested channel can sometimes help a wireless link, but it does not alter which devices Microsoft supports. Channel tuning is relevant only after a supported client is already connected and you are troubleshooting interference.

Opening a browser or using a hidden app

Finding a webpage or an unlisted application is not the same as Microsoft supporting the device. Even if a page loads, input handling, authentication, video decoding and service policy may prevent a usable session. Do not treat an unofficial workaround as equivalent to supported access.

Buying a faster plan or an Ethernet cable

More bandwidth and a wired link can improve an already supported stream. Neither changes the platform requirement. Purchase or install networking hardware for a supported device or for PS5’s own cloud-streaming service, not as a promise that Xbox Cloud Gaming will appear on PS5.

The native PS5 alternative: PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming

Sony documents a separate cloud-streaming service for PS5. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium and works only with eligible games and availability in the account’s region. This is a PlayStation service, not Xbox Cloud Gaming, so its speed figures and library rules must be evaluated separately.

Sony’s PS5 streaming speed requirements

Purpose or output Required or recommended connection Qualification
Establish a cloud-streaming session At least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download Sony’s stated minimum for PS5 Cloud Streaming
1080p streaming 23 Mbps Sony’s recommended rate
1440p streaming 38 Mbps Sony’s recommended rate
2160p streaming 52 Mbps Sony’s recommended rate for 4K output

The upload requirement is easy to overlook: Sony specifies both upload and download for establishing a session. A download-only speed test is therefore incomplete. Test the PS5’s actual connection, and compare both directions with the target resolution’s recommendation.

Practical PS5 setup

  1. Confirm that the account has PlayStation Plus Premium and that the game is marked as eligible for cloud streaming in the relevant region.
  2. Connect the PS5 by Ethernet if possible. If using Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band and keep the console within a reliable range of the access point.
  3. Run the PS5’s network test over the connection you will use for play. Check both download and upload results.
  4. For a 1080p target, compare the result with Sony’s 23 Mbps recommendation; use the 38 Mbps or 52 Mbps recommendation when targeting 1440p or 2160p.
  5. Close or pause other high-bandwidth activity on the home network, then start the cloud session from an eligible game’s PlayStation interface.

A result above Sony’s recommendation still cannot eliminate every source of delay. The internet route, household congestion, service load and wireless interference remain relevant.

Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS5 Cloud Streaming compared

Question Xbox Cloud Gaming PS5 Cloud Streaming
Runs officially on PS5? No PS5 support is listed in Microsoft’s official device information. Yes, Sony documents the service for PS5.
Access model Requires an Xbox-supported device and an eligible access route; Microsoft describes subscription and free-to-play paths. Requires PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible game, subject to regional availability.
Preferred local connection Wired Ethernet where possible; otherwise 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Ethernet is the practical first choice; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is the wireless alternative.
Published network figures 10 Mbps for mobile devices; 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets. 5 Mbps upload and download minimum to establish a session; 23 Mbps at 1080p, 38 Mbps at 1440p and 52 Mbps at 2160p recommended.
Can its figures be applied to the other service? No. Microsoft’s numbers describe Xbox Cloud Gaming. No. Sony’s numbers describe PS5 Cloud Streaming.

The table’s bandwidth figures are not interchangeable thresholds. A connection that satisfies Sony’s 1080p recommendation is not evidence that an unsupported PS5 can access Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Microsoft’s console figure is not Sony’s 4K target.

Cost and equipment decisions

An Ethernet cable is an optional physical purchase that follows Xbox Wire’s recommendation for supported Xbox Cloud Gaming devices and is also a sensible connection choice for PS5 Cloud Streaming. You do not need to buy one to prove compatibility, and a cable cannot unlock Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5. If you already have a suitable cable and an available router port, testing it is a low-risk way to compare local connection quality before spending on a faster internet plan.

Subscription access is a separate question from network settings. Xbox describes subscription and free-to-play access routes for supported devices, while Sony requires PlayStation Plus Premium for its PS5 cloud-streaming service. Check the current service page for your account and region rather than assuming that one subscription grants access to the other provider’s catalog.

Troubleshoot symptoms without confusing them with compatibility

The stream will not start on PS5

Check platform support first. If the attempt is Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5, the lack of an official PS5 listing is the decisive limitation. Network tuning cannot resolve it. For a PS5-native stream, verify Premium membership, game eligibility and regional availability before investigating speed.

The session starts but feels delayed on a supported device

  • Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet and retest.
  • If Ethernet is unavailable, verify the device is on 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz.
  • Run a test during the period when the delay occurs, then pause other household traffic.
  • Check for packet loss or large latency variation, not only peak download speed.
  • Retest after moving closer to the access point or removing a weak wireless hop.

The picture becomes soft or resolution changes

Adaptive streaming can lower image quality when available bandwidth or connection stability changes. Confirm that the local link is steady, then test for congestion at the same time of day. Do not interpret a temporary resolution change as proof that the service is unsupported; use the compatibility check first only when the client itself will not launch.

Speed-test results look good but play remains poor

Speed is only one measurement. A test may use a nearby server while the cloud-gaming session travels to a different location. Compare wired and 5 GHz results, look for packet loss and latency spikes, and test without competing traffic. Microsoft explicitly says location, device and other factors affect performance, so a single headline speed cannot predict every session.

A short decision checklist

  • Want Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5? There is no official network-setting solution because PS5 is not listed as a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device.
  • Want Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported hardware? Use Ethernet where possible, otherwise 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and meet Microsoft’s published rate for the device category.
  • Want cloud gaming directly on PS5? Use PlayStation Plus Premium Cloud Streaming with an eligible game and meet Sony’s upload/download and resolution-specific recommendations.
  • Still seeing problems? Test the actual playing link at the affected time, remove competing traffic, and investigate latency or packet loss rather than relying on download speed alone.

What can change over time

Device support, eligible games, regions, subscription terms and recommended settings are live service details. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page, Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 setup article and Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming page are the authoritative places to recheck those details when the service or console software changes. The compatibility conclusion in this article reflects the published support information available for this edition of the guide; a later platform announcement could alter it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Xbox Cloud Gaming work on PS5 by changing DNS?

No. DNS changes can affect name resolution, but they do not add an Xbox Cloud Gaming client or make PS5 an officially supported device.

Is 20 Mbps enough for Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Microsoft publishes 20 Mbps as its best-performance rate for consoles, PCs and tablets. It is guidance, not a guarantee; latency, packet loss, congestion, location and device factors still affect play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Use wired Ethernet where practical. If Wi-Fi is necessary, Microsoft recommends 5 GHz and you should verify that the device is actually connected to that band.

What is the PS5 cloud-streaming minimum?

Sony says PS5 Cloud Streaming needs at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to establish a session. Sony recommends 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p and 52 Mbps for 2160p.

Does Xbox Game Pass make Xbox Cloud Gaming available on PS5?

No. Access routes such as a subscription or free-to-play eligibility apply only when you use a device supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming. They do not change PS5 compatibility.

Why is my speed test fast but cloud gaming still lags?

A speed test may use a different route than the gaming session. Compare Ethernet and 5 GHz, test at the time of the problem, pause competing traffic, and check latency variation or packet loss.

The Bottom Line

The best Xbox Cloud Gaming setting for PS5 is not a setting at all: PS5 is not listed as a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device. On supported hardware, choose Ethernet where possible, otherwise confirmed 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and use Microsoft’s 10 Mbps mobile or 20 Mbps console, PC and tablet guidance without treating it as a guarantee. For cloud gaming directly on PS5, use Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium service and its separate 5 Mbps minimum, with 23/38/52 Mbps recommendations for 1080p, 1440p and 2160p.
