The most reliable PS5 Remote Play setup starts with Sony’s own baseline: at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, with 15 Mbps in both directions recommended for best performance. Put the Remote Play device on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, pause downloads and other heavy traffic, and use Ethernet for the PS5 or a PC/Mac client when you can. If the app cannot establish a session, check NAT Type; Sony identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play.
Those settings improve your odds, but they cannot guarantee a perfect stream. Sony says Remote Play quality and connectivity vary with the network environment, and its published guidance does not set a universal ping, jitter, packet-loss or QoS target.

How to interpret the speed requirement
Check upload and download independently
Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps in both directions. The 15 Mbps recommendation also applies to both directions. Treat the slower direction as the limiting one: 80 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up does not meet the stated minimum, even though the download result looks strong.
Run a test from the device that will run Remote Play, then check the PS5’s network status separately. Results can differ between a phone, a laptop and the console because each may use a different Wi‑Fi band, location or wired connection. Repeat the test while other household devices are busy if that reflects your normal playing conditions.
Do not turn the number into a latency guarantee
Sony does not publish a universal ping, jitter or packet-loss threshold for Remote Play in the cited guidance. A connection can exceed 15 Mbps and still feel unstable if its path has intermittent loss or congestion. Conversely, a connection near the minimum may work in a quiet network environment but leave little headroom when other people stream, upload photos or download games.

- Confirm the console is online. On the PS5, open the network settings and verify that it has an active internet connection. If the console cannot reach PlayStation services reliably, fix that first.
- Enable Remote Play. In the PS5 settings, open the Remote Play section and turn on the option that allows Remote Play.
- Allow Rest Mode wake-up. If you want to connect while the PS5 is resting, configure Rest Mode features so the console can remain connected to the internet and be turned on through the network.
- Update the console. Install available PS5 system software updates before diagnosing the network. An outdated console can make a network problem look like an app problem.
- Use one PlayStation account. Sign in to the console and the Remote Play client with the same PlayStation account, as Sony’s setup guidance requires.
- Update the client device. Use the current PS Remote Play application for the supported PC, Mac or mobile device, then try the connection again.
These checks establish that the session is allowed to start. They do not improve a congested link by themselves, so continue with the local network steps below.
Put the client on a clean 5 GHz Wi‑Fi connection
Select 5 GHz on the Remote Play device
Sony recommends connecting the Remote Play device over 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. If your router presents separate network names, choose the 5 GHz network on the phone, tablet, PC or Mac running the app. If both bands share one name, use the device’s Wi‑Fi details to confirm which band it selected when possible.

Improve the signal path
Move the Remote Play device closer to the access point if the signal is weak or the session becomes unstable in a particular room. Distance and obstructions are relevant comparison factors; a device that works beside the router may struggle at the edge of coverage. Test from the location where you actually intend to play rather than assuming a result from another room applies.
Reduce competing use while diagnosing
Pause console, computer and phone downloads, cloud backups, large uploads and other heavy network activity. Ask other users to stop bandwidth-intensive tasks for a short test. If the stream becomes stable only after those tasks stop, congestion rather than raw line speed is the practical constraint.

The available Sony guidance supports cleaning up the existing path first; it does not identify a universal router model or a mandatory QoS configuration.
Use Ethernet where it removes a weak link
Sony suggests trying a wired connection for PC or Mac Remote Play and recommends a wired connection where possible in PS5 network troubleshooting. Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if you can route a cable safely. A wired PS5 avoids the console’s Wi‑Fi hop; wiring the PC or Mac avoids the client’s Wi‑Fi hop. Either change can make troubleshooting easier, but neither can repair an overloaded ISP connection or a restriction on a remote mobile network.
A standard Ethernet cable is sufficient for this troubleshooting step; no specific cable model is established by Sony’s guidance. If you can wire only one device, test both arrangements separately: first wire the PS5 while leaving the client on 5 GHz, then wire the client while leaving the PS5 on its existing connection. Keep the arrangement that produces the more stable session in your environment.

Follow this complete setup sequence
- Verify console readiness. Confirm internet access, Remote Play enabled, current PS5 software and the same PlayStation account on console and client. Make sure Rest Mode networking is configured if you connect to a resting console.
- Measure both directions. Check upload and download from the Remote Play device and inspect the PS5’s network status. Compare each result with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- Change the client path. Connect the Remote Play device to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, move it nearer the access point if needed and stop competing downloads or heavy use.
- Test a wired path. Connect the PS5 and, where practical, the PC or Mac to the router with Ethernet. Retest after each change so you know which link affected the result.
- Investigate failed setup. If the app still cannot connect, check NAT Type in the Remote Play app. Sony identifies UDP port 8572 and says NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play.
- Escalate router changes safely. If you are unfamiliar with NAT or port settings, ask your internet provider, router manufacturer or mobile carrier for help. Avoid broad firewall changes or opening unrelated ports.
- Check mobile-data conditions. If you are away from Wi‑Fi, verify your data allowance and select an appropriate mobile streaming quality in the app. Carrier conditions can prevent or interrupt the connection.
NAT Type and UDP 8572
When NAT is the likely suspect
NAT is most relevant when Remote Play cannot establish the session at all, rather than when an already-running session merely becomes blurry during congestion. Open the NAT information in the Remote Play app and record the type shown. Sony specifically warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSony’s troubleshooting material identifies UDP port 8572. That does not mean every reader should manually create a broad port-forwarding rule. Router interfaces differ, and an incorrect rule can expose other services or fail to address carrier-grade NAT upstream.
Get help instead of guessing
If NAT Type 3 appears, contact the ISP or router maker for instructions appropriate to your equipment. For a cellular connection, ask the carrier whether its network permits the required inbound or peer connectivity. Tell the support representative that the application uses UDP 8572 and that Remote Play reports NAT Type 3. Keep the request narrowly scoped to Remote Play; do not disable the router firewall wholesale.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Checks in order | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| The app cannot find or connect to the PS5 | Confirm Remote Play is enabled, the console is online, both devices use the same account, and the console software is current. Then check NAT Type. | A setup or NAT restriction is more likely than ordinary Wi‑Fi congestion. NAT Type 3 may block the session. |
| The stream starts, then disconnects | Measure upload and download again, move the client closer to the 5 GHz access point, pause other traffic and test Ethernet. | Variable signal quality or congestion is likely; a high headline download speed alone does not rule it out. |
| Video quality drops during household activity | Stop downloads, cloud backups and large uploads, then repeat the session. | Competing traffic is consuming capacity or creating congestion. |
| It works beside the router but not elsewhere | Compare 5 GHz signal quality and distance. Test a wired PS5 or client. | The local Wi‑Fi path is the differentiator; placement or obstructions may be involved. |
| Mobile Remote Play is unreliable | Check carrier coverage and conditions, data allowance and the app’s mobile streaming-quality choice. | Mobile networks are variable, and Sony warns Remote Play uses much more data than most video-streaming services. |
| Speed test shows fast download but poor play | Check upload separately and repeat tests during normal household use. | Upload may be below Sony’s threshold, or congestion and loss may be affecting the session. |
Compare connection options before buying anything
Start with the path you already own and compare one variable at a time. A wired PS5 with a 5 GHz client removes the console’s wireless hop while preserving a convenient client location. A 5 GHz client with a wireless PS5 tests whether the console’s placement is the weak link. Wiring both devices gives the cleanest local test, but it still depends on the internet service between your home and the Remote Play session.
When comparing options, record six things: upload speed, download speed, whether each endpoint is wired, the 5 GHz signal and distance, other traffic during the test, and NAT Type. This is more useful than comparing router labels or advertised maximum Wi‑Fi rates. Sony does not name a router model, mesh system, QoS profile or latency number as universally required.

Measure consistently so troubleshooting is meaningful
Run the speed check from the actual client location, not only beside the router. Note whether the test used 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or Ethernet, and repeat it at a time when household use is typical. Then inspect the PS5’s own network status; a strong client result cannot compensate for a console connection that falls below the same two-way guidance.
Change one item, retest, and run a short Remote Play session. For example, pause a download first, then test 5 GHz placement, then test Ethernet. If several changes happen at once, you cannot tell which one helped. Keep the arrangement that remains stable in the room and schedule where you actually play.
Mobile data: possible, but expensive in data and less predictable
Sony supports Remote Play over mobile data, but carrier and network conditions can prevent a connection or make it unstable. Remote Play also uses considerably more data than most video-streaming services, so check the allowance before starting a long session.
In the app, choose a mobile streaming quality that fits your allowance and coverage. Treat this as a risk-management choice rather than a quality guarantee: a lower setting may reduce data use, but the carrier still controls the underlying connectivity. If mobile NAT is restrictive, only the carrier can explain which options are available.

What the published guidance does not establish
- There is no Sony-published universal ping, jitter or packet-loss cutoff in the guidance used here.
- There is no single router model, mesh system or QoS setting identified as necessary for smooth Remote Play.
- A speed above 15 Mbps does not guarantee smooth play when the network has loss, congestion or NAT restrictions.
- An Ethernet cable cannot fix an ISP outage, an overloaded upstream link or a mobile carrier limitation.
- Changing unrelated firewall rules is not a supported first-line fix; consult the provider or equipment maker when NAT requires attention.
A quick pre-session checklist
- PS5 is online, updated and has Remote Play enabled.
- Rest Mode networking is configured if you will wake the console remotely.
- Console and client use the same PlayStation account.
- Client upload and download each meet at least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps in each direction is Sony’s recommended target.
- Client is on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi with a strong path to the access point, or is wired.
- PS5 is wired when practical, especially if its Wi‑Fi signal is weak.
- Downloads, backups and other heavy traffic are paused.
- NAT Type has been checked if connection setup fails; UDP 8572 is the Sony-identified port.
- Mobile users have checked carrier conditions, data allowance and app streaming quality.
The practical order is simple: meet Sony’s two-way speed guidance, clean up the client’s 5 GHz path, wire the PS5 or computer when possible, then investigate NAT only if setup still fails. That sequence addresses the variables Sony identifies without pretending that any setting can overcome every network environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast does internet need to be for PS5 Remote Play?
Sony states at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. It recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. Check upload separately; a fast download result does not satisfy the requirement if upload is below the threshold.
Is 5 GHz Wi‑Fi better than 2.4 GHz for Remote Play?
Sony specifically recommends 5 GHz Wi‑Fi for the Remote Play device. Use it when the signal is strong, move closer to the access point if necessary, and test from the room where you play. Distance and obstructions can make a nearby 5 GHz connection more reliable than a distant one.
Should the PS5 use Ethernet?
Ethernet is worth testing when practical. Sony recommends a wired connection in PS5 network troubleshooting and suggests trying wired networking for PC or Mac Remote Play. It removes a local Wi‑Fi hop, but it cannot fix an ISP outage, congestion outside the home or a mobile-carrier restriction.
Why does PS Remote Play keep disconnecting?
Recheck both upload and download, pause downloads and backups, improve the client’s 5 GHz signal, and test Ethernet for the PS5 or client. If the stream works only when household activity stops, congestion is likely. A speed above 15 Mbps does not rule out intermittent loss or an unstable wireless path.
What port does PS5 Remote Play use?
Sony identifies UDP port 8572. If the app reports NAT Type 3 or cannot establish a session, ask your ISP, router manufacturer or carrier for device-specific help. Do not disable the firewall or open unrelated ports as a first step.
Can I use PS5 Remote Play on mobile data?
Yes, Sony supports mobile-data connections, but carrier conditions may prevent or interrupt Remote Play. It uses much more data than most video-streaming services, so check your allowance and choose an appropriate mobile streaming quality in the app.
The Bottom Line
For the best-supported setup, meet Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum in both directions—or its 15 Mbps recommendation—connect the client over a strong 5 GHz signal, pause competing traffic, and use Ethernet for the PS5 or computer when practical. If setup still fails, check NAT Type and get targeted help about UDP 8572 rather than making broad firewall changes. These steps improve the local path, but Sony does not promise smooth play on every network.
