There is no single best network monitoring tool for every organization. The right choice depends on what you need to monitor, how you want to deploy it, how each vendor counts what you license, and how much work your team can take on to operate it. SolarWinds Observability is the only option in this comparison with a sufficiently visible starting price; for the others, request a quote or verify current regional pricing before comparing costs.
What should a network monitoring tool do?
A useful network monitoring platform can discover devices and track health, availability, and performance measures such as latency, packet loss, throughput, interface utilization, errors, and discards. Depending on the product and configuration, it may also analyze traffic flows, map topology, alert on problems, and help trace a network path hop by hop. These capabilities matter because a device dashboard alone may show that something is wrong without helping an operator locate the cause.

For a mixed estate, check whether the tool covers the technologies you actually run: branch and data-center equipment, wireless and SD-WAN, cloud accounts, managed services, and multiple network vendors. Confirm support for the protocols and data sources your devices expose, such as SNMP, flow formats, APIs, syslogs, or streaming telemetry. If network symptoms need to be compared with application or infrastructure behavior, verify that the product can provide that context rather than assuming all network monitors do.

What distinguishes each network monitoring option?
SolarWinds Observability
SolarWinds says its network monitoring can discover equipment through ICMP, SNMP, WMI, CDP, VMware, and Hyper-V. Its described features include monitoring bandwidth, packet loss, throughput, latency, connectivity, and availability; NetFlow reports and alerts; configuration comparison and backup automation; packet analysis; anomaly-based alerts; and hop-by-hop path analysis. The product page also provides an interactive demo. These are vendor-described capabilities, so confirm that the relevant features are included in the edition and configuration you are considering.
Datadog Network Monitoring
Datadog describes coverage across multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments, with the ability to correlate network signals with application and infrastructure data. Its listed flow formats include NetFlow v5/v9, IPFIX, sFlow, and jFlow. The range of telemetry and cross-layer context may suit teams already managing observability in Datadog, but the product page alone does not establish the total cost of a particular deployment.
PRTG and OpManager
PRTG and OpManager use different licensing units in the vendor-authored comparison: sensors for PRTG and devices for OpManager. Those units are not interchangeable. A single device may require multiple sensors to cover the desired measurements, while device-based licensing is counted differently. Ask each vendor to price the same monitoring scope and confirm which features, modules, support, and deployment options are included.

LogicMonitor and Dynatrace
LogicMonitor and Dynatrace appear as additional shortlist candidates in a SolarWinds-authored comparison, not as independently reviewed alternatives here. That comparison characterizes LogicMonitor as SaaS monitoring across network, infrastructure, and cloud, and Dynatrace as emphasizing application context and analytics. Validate those descriptions and fit directly with the vendors before treating them as selection criteria.
How should you compare network monitoring tool pricing?
Of the reviewed official pages, only SolarWinds provided a sufficiently clear current starting amount: $8 per node per month for Observability Self-Hosted, with volume discounts available. It is an entry price for that specific edition, not a price for every SolarWinds configuration or for its SaaS offering. The page describes a fully functional 30-day trial.
Datadog provides a route to current pricing, but the reviewed product information does not establish a complete deployment cost. The reviewed Paessler pricing page and ManageEngine store content did not provide enough detail to substantiate exact amounts. An attempted Zabbix pricing page returned a 404, which does not establish that Zabbix has no pricing information. Check the vendors’ current official regional pricing or request a quote rather than treating missing figures as free, unavailable, or comparable.

Before comparing quotes, give each vendor the same scope and ask how costs change as monitoring grows. Include:
- The number and type of devices, nodes, hosts, or sensors to be monitored.
- Required modules, telemetry sources, and protocols.
- Deployment model, retention period, ingestion or roll-up limits, and expected data growth.
- Support requirements, contract term, and region.
Also ask how licensing counts change when you add devices, sites, or metrics. The cheapest-looking unit price may not represent the same coverage or operating cost as another vendor’s offer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you evaluate a demo or trial?
A demo can show the interface; a proof of concept can test whether the product works with your environment and operating practices. Use representative sites and incidents, then compare repair time, alert volume, and operator effort. The following checks are practical ways to make that evaluation concrete:

- Portable 100M/1G Network TAP Appliance for remote capture of data traffic
- Integrated with a Raspberry Pi 4 module (8GB RAM and 64GB Micro SD Card)
- Can be used as a standalone 100M/1G network TAP with the external monitor port
- Dual DC power inputs for enhancing overall system availability
- Confirm coverage. Ask the vendor to demonstrate discovery and monitoring for your must-have device models, protocols, cloud accounts, and managed services.
- Use a representative topology. Add a branch and a data-center segment, then inspect whether the discovered devices, links, and dependencies reflect your environment.
- Test real telemetry. Generate or import traffic data and check the metrics, flow views, and retention behavior you need.
- Trigger a known failure. Verify whether alerts arrive with enough device, traffic, and path context to help an operator investigate.
- Check operations and integrations. Test alert tuning, exports, ticketing and notification workflows, automation, and the effort required to onboard equipment.
- Model growth. Ask how the quote and system behavior change with more sites, devices, sensors, data, or longer retention; confirm upgrade paths and licensing terms.
What counts as a credible software review?
Vendor product pages are useful for identifying stated features, editions, trials, and available demos, but they are not independent product reviews. The comparison used for several shortlist descriptions is authored by SolarWinds, so those characterizations should be treated as vendor guidance rather than neutral comparative findings. No named independent reviewer scores or original cross-vendor test results are established for this comparison.
SolarWinds reports that 77% of respondents to its 2026 State of Monitoring and Observability Report said they had limited visibility across environments; the company says 750 IT professionals worldwide responded. This is a vendor-reported survey finding, not evidence that a particular tool is superior or that the percentage represents all IT teams.
