Lambda is the clearest choice for self-serve GPU instances and short-lived, interconnected training clusters. Crusoe is better when you want GPU rental combined with managed inference or serverless fine-tuning. Runpod suits developers who need fast, bursty access through Pods, Serverless and Clusters. CoreWeave remains oriented toward large NVIDIA deployments with on-demand, spot and inference-specific rates. The right option depends on GPU memory, distributed-training networking, interruption tolerance, inference operations, geography and the full cost beyond the advertised GPU-hour.

What a neocloud alternative actually replaces

A neocloud is a cloud provider built around accelerated computing rather than general-purpose virtual machines. For AI teams, that usually means direct access to H100, H200, B200, GB200, A100 or comparable AMD accelerators; images and drivers prepared for machine-learning frameworks; high-speed networking for multi-GPU jobs; and billing that can be measured in GPU-hours or seconds instead of a long hardware lease.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Replacing an established GPU cloud is not just a price exercise. A single-GPU fine-tuning notebook, a 16-GPU distributed run and a production inference service have different requirements. The cheapest hourly rate can lose its advantage if a job spends time waiting for capacity, if the network prevents scaling, or if engineers must build every serving component themselves.

  • Training scale: decide whether you need one GPU, a multi-GPU host or a multi-node cluster.
  • Memory and software: model size, context length, precision and framework support determine whether an H100, H200, B200, GB200 or AMD accelerator is appropriate.
  • Consumption model: on-demand is predictable, spot is cheaper when a job can restart, and reserved or committed capacity can make sense for steady usage.
  • Inference operations: choose between managing your own server, a managed service, a serverless endpoint or a per-token API.
  • Location and data movement: region availability, data residency, latency, storage and egress can outweigh a small difference in GPU price.

Lambda: the transparent self-serve and cluster option

What Lambda publishes

Lambda’s pricing page lists both individual self-serve instances and 1-Click Clusters. The displayed self-serve examples are an H100 SXM at $3.99 per GPU-hour, an A100 SXM at $2.79 per GPU-hour and a B200 SXM6 at $6.69 per GPU-hour in the shown configuration. Those figures are useful for comparing a single accelerator, but the host configuration and region still matter.

For larger jobs, Lambda lists 1-Click H100 clusters at $6.16 per GPU-hour for 16 GPUs, $5.85 for 64 GPUs and $5.54 for 256 GPUs on plans ranging from two weeks to one year. B200 cluster prices are also listed. The cluster product is designed for 16 to 2,000-plus interconnected GPUs, so it is aimed at distributed training rather than merely attaching several independent virtual machines.

Instance catalog and geography

Lambda’s On-Demand Cloud documentation describes Linux GPU-backed virtual machines. The documented catalog includes B200, GH200, H100 SXM and PCIe, A100 SXM and PCIe, A10, A6000, Tesla V100 and RTX 6000 instance types. Each instance is associated with a geographic region; capacity and price therefore need to be checked for the region where data and users can legally reside.

When Lambda is the best alternative

  • Use it for a research team that wants to create a VM without negotiating a custom contract.
  • Use 1-Click Clusters when synchronized multi-node training is more important than the absolute lowest single-GPU rate.
  • Use the broad catalog when a workload must run on a particular NVIDIA generation or on an older accelerator for compatibility or cost reasons.

What to verify before launch

Cluster pricing is displayed for specific plan durations, so compare the commitment period with your actual run schedule. Confirm that the required GPU count is available in one region and that the storage and network design can feed the accelerators. Lambda itself advises rechecking pricing and capacity immediately before publication or purchase because rates change.

Crusoe: a broad path from GPU rental to managed inference

Published on-demand rates

Crusoe publishes these on-demand examples per GPU-hour: H100 at $4.50, H200 at $5.40, B200 at $8.50, A100 SXM at $2.30, A100 PCIe at $2.00, L40S at $1.50 and MI300X at $3.45. HGX B300 is listed at $9.90. GB200 and MI355X are shown as contact-sales items rather than public hourly prices.

The model mix is notable because it includes both NVIDIA and AMD hardware. An AMD MI300X can be attractive when the software stack supports it and the model benefits from its memory and throughput characteristics, but framework, kernel and serving-library compatibility must be tested before moving a production workload.

Consumption choices

Crusoe describes on-demand instances as suitable for flexible, predictable workloads. Its spot offering is aimed at fault-tolerant jobs that can stop and restart. Spot is therefore a fit for checkpointed pre-training, hyperparameter sweeps and batch generation, not for a service that must remain continuously available unless a separate failover design exists.

Managed products

Beyond raw instances, Crusoe lists managed inference, serverless fine-tuning, managed Kubernetes and serverless inference. These services can reduce the amount of platform engineering needed to expose a model, schedule jobs or manage a Kubernetes control plane. They also shift some operational decisions to the provider, so review supported runtimes, scaling behavior, observability, data handling and pricing for requests or runtime in addition to the GPU rate.

When Crusoe is the best alternative

Choose Crusoe when the same team needs a conventional GPU VM for training and a managed route to inference, or when serverless fine-tuning is more useful than maintaining a permanent training environment. It is also a candidate for organizations that want to evaluate an AMD path without giving up access to current NVIDIA instances.

Runpod: fast, modular access for developers

Three products for three operating models

  • Pods: dedicated GPU instances for interactive development, notebooks, custom containers and long-running jobs.
  • Serverless: API-oriented inference endpoints where the platform handles more of the provisioning and scaling work.
  • Clusters: multi-node environments for distributed training and other coordinated workloads.

Runpod says it offers thousands of GPUs across more than 30 regions. Its pricing page was updated October 8, 2026. Displayed examples include H200 at $5.29 per hour, B200 at $7.99, B300 at $8.99, RTX Pro 6000 at $2.49 and H100 NVL at $3.19. The page distinguishes community and secure-cloud variants, so the effective price depends on which capacity class, region, storage and runtime you select.

Why it suits bursty work

Per-second billing options and rapid provisioning can make Runpod practical for experiments that start and stop frequently. A developer can use a Pod for an interactive session, move a stable model to Serverless for an endpoint, and reserve Clusters for a distributed run. That modularity avoids forcing every workload into a single billing model.

Trade-offs to evaluate

Community capacity can have different availability and operational characteristics from secure capacity. Confirm the GPU type, host resources, persistence of attached storage, networking between nodes and data-egress policy before comparing a displayed hourly number with another provider’s dedicated instance. For production inference, test cold-start behavior and concurrency rather than judging only by the GPU rate.

CoreWeave: large-scale NVIDIA capacity and inference pricing

Published examples

CoreWeave’s official pricing page covers compute, storage, networking, on-demand capacity, spot capacity and an inference-specific rate. It lists NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 systems at $42.00 per hour for a four-GPU configuration and $10.50 per hour for the corresponding single-GPU inference rate. Availability and prices vary by region and hardware generation. HGX B200 and B300 systems are also listed, with some prices presented as contact-sales quotes.

How to interpret the GB200 figure

The $42.00 number is for a four-GPU configuration, not a single accelerator. Dividing it into a per-GPU figure would hide the fact that the system is sold as a particular configuration with its own host and interconnect characteristics. The $10.50 rate is identified as the corresponding single-GPU inference rate, so it should not be treated as a general-purpose training price.

Training: match the provider to the scaling problem

Single-GPU training and fine-tuning

For a single GPU, compare memory, supported software and startup time before price. An H100 or H200 may finish a run faster than an older A100, while an L40S or RTX-class card can be adequate for smaller models and lower-cost experimentation. Crusoe’s published L40S and A100 rates illustrate why a lower-cost accelerator can be rational when memory and throughput requirements are modest.

Multi-GPU on one host

When a model uses tensor or pipeline parallelism across GPUs in one server, the host interconnect and GPU topology affect scaling. Ask whether the advertised configuration is a tightly coupled machine or several independent instances. A provider’s per-GPU price is not enough to establish equivalent performance.

Distributed, multi-node training

Distributed jobs need a network fabric with predictable bandwidth and latency, synchronized clocking, storage that can feed all workers and a scheduler that can allocate the complete set of GPUs. Lambda’s 1-Click Clusters explicitly target 16 to 2,000-plus interconnected GPUs, making that product a direct fit for short-term large runs. Runpod’s Clusters and CoreWeave’s large NVIDIA systems address the same category, but you must verify the exact topology and capacity in the target region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spot and restartable jobs

Spot capacity can lower the cost of pre-training, sweeps and batch jobs only when the software can recover. Save checkpoints to durable storage at a useful interval, make data loading reproducible and ensure workers can be recreated. If losing an interruption window forces a full restart, the nominal discount may disappear.

Inference: select the operating model, not just the GPU

Self-managed serving

A VM or Pod gives maximum control over the model server, batching, quantization, autoscaling and observability. It is appropriate when traffic is steady, the team already operates containers and low-level tuning matters. Budget for idle time, patching, health checks, rollout strategy and capacity planning.

Managed inference

Crusoe lists managed inference, while CoreWeave publishes an inference-specific GB200 rate. Managed offerings can remove infrastructure tasks, but compare supported model formats, scaling limits, request logging, networking and data-retention behavior. A rate labeled for inference should not automatically be used to estimate training cost.

Serverless endpoints

Runpod Serverless and Crusoe serverless inference are designed around API requests rather than a permanently provisioned VM. They can be efficient for irregular traffic, but measure cold starts, scale-to-zero behavior, maximum concurrency and model-load time. For a latency-sensitive application with constant traffic, an always-on instance may be simpler and cheaper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Per-token economics

GPU-hour pricing is only one input to inference cost. Record requests per second, input and output token counts, sequence lengths, batching efficiency, utilization and the storage or network charges associated with each endpoint. Convert the result to cost per request or per million tokens before choosing a provider.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical selection process

  1. Describe the workload. Record model family, parameter count, precision, context length, expected memory use, training duration, inference traffic and whether interruption is acceptable.
  2. Choose the deployment shape. Select a single VM, a multi-GPU host, a distributed cluster, a managed inference service or a serverless endpoint. Do not compare a cluster quote with an unrelated single-GPU VM.
  3. Shortlist compatible accelerators. Check GPU memory and software support first. Include an AMD option only after validating the framework, kernels and serving stack.
  4. Filter by geography. Verify that capacity exists in an allowed region, that data can remain there and that latency to object storage and end users is acceptable.
  5. Price the whole run. Multiply the displayed GPU rate by actual runtime and GPU count, then add storage, snapshots, networking, egress, attached CPU/RAM, taxes, support and idle periods.
  6. Test a representative slice. Measure tokens per second, samples per second, scaling efficiency, checkpoint time, startup time and failure recovery on the exact configuration.
  7. Decide on interruption policy. Use on-demand for deadlines and services that cannot restart. Use spot only after checkpointing and recovery have been demonstrated.
  8. Set controls before production. Add budget alerts, automatic shutdown, quota limits, access controls, encrypted storage and a documented process for deleting idle resources.

Total-cost checklist

  • GPU time: include every worker and the time spent downloading data, compiling kernels or waiting for a job to complete.
  • Host resources: CPU, system memory, local NVMe and persistent volumes may be priced separately or bundled differently.
  • Storage: account for datasets, checkpoints, container layers, replicas and snapshots over the full retention period.
  • Networking: include inter-node traffic, object-storage reads and internet egress where the provider charges for them.
  • Capacity policy: distinguish on-demand, spot, reserved and committed rates, and record minimum terms or cancellation rules.
  • Operations: include engineering time for drivers, images, schedulers, autoscaling, monitoring, incident response and security reviews.
  • Utilization: a cheaper GPU that is idle during data preparation can cost more than a faster, better-utilized one.

Common failure modes and fixes

Choosing by hourly rate alone

Symptom: the invoice is higher than the estimate despite a low GPU price. Fix: model storage, egress, host resources, idle time and the number of GPUs actually required; then compare cost per completed training step or served request.

Assuming every H100 is equivalent

Symptom: a distributed job scales poorly or a model does not fit. Fix: verify SXM versus PCIe, memory, host topology, interconnect, region and software image. Treat a named GPU as a starting point, not a complete specification.

Using spot without recovery engineering

Symptom: an interruption erases hours or days of progress. Fix: checkpoint to durable storage, test restart from the latest checkpoint and keep a small on-demand fallback for deadlines.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Deploying serverless inference without latency tests

Symptom: average cost looks good but first-request latency violates the product target. Fix: measure cold and warm starts, model-load time, concurrency and scale-out behavior under realistic traffic.

Ignoring regional capacity

Symptom: a selected GPU or cluster cannot be created when needed. Fix: check live availability in the required region, keep a compatible fallback GPU, and avoid promising a delivery date based only on a public list price.

Recommendations by workload

Researcher running short experiments

Start with a self-serve VM or Pod. Lambda is the most transparent starting point for a conventional Linux GPU instance; Runpod is attractive when sessions are highly intermittent and rapid provisioning matters. Shut resources down automatically when notebooks disconnect.

Team fine-tuning a model for a few days

Use on-demand capacity when the schedule is fixed. Crusoe is compelling if serverless fine-tuning or a managed inference handoff is part of the same project. If the run can restart, evaluate spot after validating checkpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization running a 16- to 256-GPU training job

Prioritize cluster topology, storage throughput and scheduler behavior. Lambda publishes 1-Click H100 prices for 16, 64 and 256 GPUs and supports clusters from 16 to 2,000-plus GPUs, making it a straightforward shortlist candidate. Compare Runpod Clusters and large NVIDIA configurations from CoreWeave only after confirming equivalent interconnect and capacity.

Production API with variable traffic

Compare Runpod Serverless, Crusoe serverless inference and managed options against a self-managed always-on VM. Use measured cost per request and latency percentiles, not GPU-hour price alone.

High-volume, predictable inference

Consider dedicated capacity or a negotiated large-system deployment. CoreWeave’s inference-specific GB200 rate is relevant when the model and traffic justify that class of hardware; validate the configuration, region and commercial terms before making a capacity commitment.

Bottom line

Pick Lambda for transparent self-serve GPUs and short-term interconnected clusters; pick Crusoe when managed inference, serverless fine-tuning or an AMD option matters; pick Runpod for fast, bursty developer workflows across Pods, Serverless and Clusters; and evaluate CoreWeave for large NVIDIA systems and inference-specific capacity. Recalculate the decision using your actual model, region, utilization, storage, networking and recovery requirements immediately before deployment.
