There are not five verified, current 40-inch 4K televisions to recommend from the available US manufacturer evidence. The closest documented choices are 42-inch 4K OLED models, which are commonly grouped with 40- and 43-inch sets in small-TV buying guides. A 42-inch television is not a 40-inch television, so this guide keeps that distinction clear while showing what you can actually evaluate: LG’s 2026 OLED42C6PUA and previous-year OLED42C5AUA, plus the checks you should make before buying any compact 4K set.

Why a “40-inch 4K TV” list is difficult to verify
Television listings use diagonal screen size, measured from one corner of the visible panel to the opposite corner. That grouping is useful for shopping, but it does not prove that five exact 40-inch 4K models are currently sold. The evidence available for this article verifies two 42-inch LG OLED sets instead. These are adjacent-size options, not five exact-size recommendations. Both are 42-inch-class televisions, so measure your furniture and confirm the retailer’s model number before ordering.

LG OLED42C6PUA (2026): the newer compact OLED
The C6 is the most current named example in the available evidence. LG identifies it as a 42-inch-class 4K OLED smart TV and lists Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Its headline gaming specification is a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, with 4K at 165Hz VRR support listed for compatible sources.
LG’s announcement says: “The LG OLED evo C6 TV is available in six screen sizes (42/48/55/65/77/83-inch) and has an MSRP starting at $1,399.” In context, the 42-inch launch model is the relevant compact size. Treat $1,399 as the manufacturer’s launch MSRP from March 5, 2026, not as a promise that every retailer currently charges that amount.

LG OLED42C5AUA (2025): a previous-year 42-inch option
The C5A is also a 42-inch-class 4K OLED television. LG lists Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and a 144Hz refresh rate. Because it is a previous-year model, the practical buying question is less about the original specification and more about whether a legitimate seller has stock at a price that makes the older model worthwhile.
No current price or inventory figure was established for the C5A. Check the complete model number, panel size, return policy, warranty coverage, and delivery condition before treating a discounted listing as a bargain.
How to decide whether 42 inches will fit your space
A two-inch diagonal difference sounds small, but the television’s width, stand position, bezel, and required ventilation determine whether it fits a desk, cabinet, bedroom wall, or gaming setup. Use the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing for the exact model rather than estimating from the diagonal alone.
Measure the viewing area
- Measure the usable width of the furniture or wall, excluding trim and cable channels.
- Measure the usable height, including room for the stand if you will not wall-mount the TV.
- Compare those measurements with the model’s official dimensions in both stand-on and stand-off configurations.
- Leave clearance for power, HDMI cables, ventilation, and access to ports. A panel that technically fits can still be impractical if connectors are crushed against a wall.
- Check the stand footprint, not just the panel width. A narrow shelf may support the screen but not the supplied feet.
Account for the diagonal-size mismatch
If your furniture was specified for an exact 40-inch set, do not assume a 42-inch model will slide into the same opening. The correct comparison is the television’s published width and height, including the stand, rather than the number in the product name.

4K resolution and lower-resolution sources
4K describes the panel’s pixel grid; it does not guarantee that every program, stream, game, or broadcast arrives in 4K. A compact television may display 4K streaming, 1080p console output, HD television, and older lower-resolution material in the same week.
When comparing a small TV, evaluate how it handles the sources you actually use:
- Native 4K: Look for clean fine detail in 4K streams, UHD discs, or a PC signal.
- 1080p: Check whether faces, text, and game interfaces remain natural when the set scales HD to the 4K panel.
- Broadcast and older video: Compression and low-resolution material can expose ringing, noise reduction, or softness that a resolution label does not reveal.

Both verified models use OLED panels. OLED is a display technology in which each pixel emits its own light, unlike a television that relies on a separate backlight. That design can produce very dark portions of an image beside bright highlights, but the manufacturer specifications supplied here do not establish independent measurements for brightness, viewing angles, power use, or long-term image retention.

Match the panel to your content
- For films and series in a dim or controlled room, prioritize shadow detail, reflection handling, and the picture mode you prefer.
- For daytime viewing, inspect the room’s windows and lamps. A glossy screen can reflect bright objects even when its panel is capable of high contrast.
- For static PC work, news tickers, or game interfaces, vary content and use the television’s built-in panel-protection features according to the manual.
- For shared viewing, check seating angles in person or through a retailer’s return policy; the product pages alone do not provide independent viewing-angle tests.
Gaming: refresh rate, VRR, and signal-chain limits
The C6 lists up to 165Hz and 4K at 165Hz VRR support; the C5A lists 144Hz. A higher panel refresh specification matters only when the source, cable, input, and game can deliver a matching signal. It does not mean every game will run at 165 or 144 frames per second.
Check compatibility before purchase
- Identify the maximum output your console or PC supports at 4K.
- Check the television’s input specifications for the desired resolution, refresh rate, and VRR mode.

- The exact suffix, such as OLED42C6PUA or OLED42C5AUA.
- The diagonal size shown in the technical specification, not only the category heading.
- Whether the item is new, refurbished, used, or open box.
- Delivery, return-window, and dead-pixel policies.
- Warranty issuer and regional coverage.
- Whether the listed price includes required accessories or a separate stand.

Calling a 42-inch TV a 40-inch TV

A 165Hz or 144Hz panel can accept a high-refresh signal when the source supports it, but it cannot make a game render more frames than the console or PC produces.
Using an incomplete model number
Regional suffixes and similar names can identify different products. Copy the full model code from the product label and the seller’s invoice.
Who should consider each verified model?
Choose the C6 when
- You specifically want the newer 2026 42-inch-class OLED example documented by LG.
- Your PC or compatible gaming source can make use of the listed 4K-at-165Hz VRR capability.
- You are comparing a current launch reference price with a retailer’s actual offer and understand that the two figures are different.
Consider the C5A when
