These games are not interchangeable: HITSTER’s central challenge is ordering songs by release chronology, while Nintendo describes SongPop Party as music-based trivia. Check regional availability before choosing the digital option.

HITSTER Original: a music card game built around timelines
HITSTER works best when the group enjoys recognizing songs and reasoning about when they were released. It is not necessary to name an exact year in the basic mode: players place each new card before, after, or between songs already on their timeline, then flip the card to check the answer. - The physical HITSTER card game. The companion app listing says the card game is required.
- A phone and an internet connection to use the app and scan the cards.
- A music playback setup the group can use. HITSTER’s official FAQ says that without a Spotify account, the listening experience is limited to 20 seconds per song. It also describes manually searching for songs on a preferred streaming service as an option.
How a round works
- Scan a music card with the app and listen to the song.
- Place the card on your timeline in the position you think matches its release chronology.
- Flip the card to check whether it is correctly positioned.
- Continue until a player has correctly placed ten cards, as described in the official rules.
Choose the difficulty that suits the group
- Basic timeline play: place songs in chronological order without having to identify the exact release year.
- PRO: add the challenge of naming the artist and song title.
- EXPERT: name the exact release year.
- COOPERATIVE: work together to collect ten cards before running out of tokens.
The rules allow players to compete individually or in teams. The app listing describes the game as including more than 300 songs from the last 100 years; that is the publisher’s product description, not an independently verified catalog count, and the listing does not state a year for the figure.

SongPop Party: a digital option for Switch groups
SongPop Party is the better match if your group already has access to Nintendo Switch and wants a quiz-style game rather than a physical card timeline. Nintendo lists both local couch play and online multiplayer for up to eight people. Its Nintendo Switch listing describes “hundreds of thousands” of unlockable songs organized by genre, artist, decade, and topic. That catalog figure is a Nintendo product claim; the listing does not state a publication year for it.
The available listing establishes the player count and broad play options, but does not provide enough detail to compare SongPop Party’s round-by-round rules with HITSTER’s. Check the current regional Nintendo listing for availability and game details before buying.

How to choose
- Choose HITSTER if you want a physical party game, enjoy placing songs in a timeline, and can use its card game, app, phone, internet, and playback setup.
