Apple Music is the natural first choice when your priority is an app that feels native to Apple TV. Apple’s Apple TV user guide documents the Music app for browsing and playing music videos, watching Apple Music TV, and streaming music associated with an Apple Music account. That means you can stay in Apple’s interface instead of adding a separate ecosystem to your television.

Apple says Apple TV 4K is a supported device for lossless listening. Lossless playback is not a guarantee that every track, setting or connected device will use lossless audio: the available version of a song and the path from Apple TV 4K through the television, HDMI connection and audio equipment still determine the result.
Who should choose it
Choose Apple Music if you already pay for it, want Apple’s TV-oriented music-video features, or prefer one account and one interface across Apple devices. It is also the least complicated recommendation for a household that does not need phone-based handoff or immersive-audio-specific features.
What to verify first
Apple states that availability can vary by country or region. Check the Apple Music app and the current local subscription options before assuming a particular catalog, plan, family benefit or trial is available. Do not treat the “over 100 million” figure as a promise that every song is licensed in your market.

Spotify: the strongest remote-and-phone control combination
Spotify’s US App Store listing identifies an Apple TV app and requires tvOS 17.0 or later. It explicitly supports browsing artists, albums, songs and playlists with the TV remote, while Spotify Connect lets you select the Apple TV from a phone or tablet and use that device to control playback.
Why Spotify is different on the couch
Spotify gives you two documented control paths. Use the remote when you want to browse directly on the television, or start playback on your phone and hand it to the Apple TV through Spotify Connect. That flexibility is useful when typing or searching with a remote is inconvenient, and it lets the person holding the phone manage a queue without taking over the television’s screen.
Free versus Premium
The US listing describes free listening as well as ad-free listening with Premium. It does not establish that the same tiers, advertising rules, playback controls or pricing apply in every country. If your Apple TV cannot update to tvOS 17, the listed Spotify app requirement is a decisive warning. Check Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software on the Apple TV before troubleshooting the app. If the device cannot meet the requirement, use another supported playback route rather than assuming a reinstall will solve it.

Amazon Music: useful when your existing membership already covers it
Amazon Music has an Apple TV listing in Apple’s App Store. Its description separates three kinds of access: free ad-supported listening, benefits associated with Prime, and Amazon Music Unlimited features. The exact meaning of “included” depends on the account, membership and market.
How the access levels differ
- Free access: the listing describes ad-supported listening, but the available playback controls and catalog can vary by market.
- Prime-associated access: the listing describes benefits for Prime members; do not assume every song is available on demand or that every country has identical Prime Music terms.

TIDAL says its app is available for Apple TV running tvOS 15 or later. Its setup process uses a code displayed on the television: open the app, note the code, and link your TIDAL account using the instructions shown on screen.
Dolby Atmos Music on Apple TV 4K
TIDAL documents Dolby Atmos Music support on Apple TV 4K for supported tracks. Atmos is not a property of every song in the catalog, and an Apple TV 4K alone cannot create an Atmos result. The television, HDMI connection, receiver or soundbar and their settings must all pass and decode the format. A compatible title can still play in another format when one part of that chain is limited.
Known TV-app gaps

Choose Spotify when your phone should be the remote
Spotify is the clearest match for households that alternate between browsing on the television and controlling playback from a phone or tablet. Confirm that the Apple TV can run tvOS 17 or later and that the local Spotify listing offers the tier you expect.
Choose Amazon Music when your account determines value
Amazon Music deserves the first trial when you already have Prime or another Amazon Music plan. Compare the actual on-demand catalog and playback controls in your country rather than assuming that a Prime benefit equals Music Unlimited.
Choose TIDAL when your system is built for Atmos
TIDAL is the most targeted option for a compatible Apple TV 4K, television and receiver or soundbar chain where Dolby Atmos Music is a priority. If your system is stereo or cannot pass Atmos, its headline format should not outweigh the TV-app limitations or your preferred catalog and controls.
How to install and sign in on Apple TV
- Check the Apple TV model and software: open Settings > System > About to see the model and tvOS version. Update through Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software when an update is available.
- Open the App Store: from the Apple TV Home Screen, select App Store, choose Search, and enter the service name. Apple Music is normally accessed through the built-in Music app; Spotify, Amazon Music and TIDAL are separate App Store apps where available.
- Check the listing before downloading: look for the stated minimum tvOS version and confirm that the developer and service match the account you intend to use. A listing in one country does not prove availability in another.
- Install or open the app: select Get for a new app, then launch it from the Home Screen. If the store says the app is unavailable or incompatible, verify the Apple TV’s region and software version before trying again.
- Sign in using the method shown: enter credentials with the remote, scan a displayed QR code if offered, or use the service’s phone activation flow. TIDAL specifically uses a code displayed on the Apple TV to link the account.

For Dolby Atmos Music

Troubleshooting common Apple TV problems
The app does not appear in the App Store
Check the Apple TV region, search spelling and tvOS version. Regional storefront rules can prevent an app from appearing even when the service exists elsewhere. If the device is below the app’s minimum version, update it if possible; otherwise, use a supported external device or another service.
Spotify cannot connect from the phone
Put the phone and Apple TV on the same network, open Spotify on both devices, and use the device picker to select the Apple TV. If it is still missing, restart the app and Apple TV, then check whether the Apple TV app and phone account are signed in to the intended service account.
TIDAL plays sound but not Atmos
Confirm that the song is marked as an Atmos-supported track, the Apple TV is a 4K model, and the HDMI/eARC path reaches an Atmos-capable receiver or soundbar. Check the television’s passthrough setting and look for an Atmos indicator on the receiver. A non-Atmos result does not necessarily mean the app is broken; it can reflect the title or equipment chain.
Amazon Music access looks different from a friend’s
Compare account country, Prime status and the exact Amazon Music tier. The Apple TV listing describes free, Prime-associated and Unlimited access, but those benefits are not necessarily identical across markets or accounts.

Start with Apple Music for the most integrated Apple TV experience.
