Best multiplayer shooters to play if you want a break from Call of Duty

The right Call of Duty alternative depends on what you want to change. Choose Battlefield 6 for large conventional military battles, Rainbow Six Siege for methodical tactical play, Delta Force for a broad free-to-play military package, Apex Legends for hero abilities and squad battle royale, VALORANT for precise round-based tactics, or Halo Infinite for a futuristic arena reset. Fortnite OG and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS are the clearest alternatives when you mainly want a different battle-royale pace and presentation.

All of these games offer online multiplayer, but they do not replace the same part of Call of Duty. The useful choice is the one whose match length, objective design, movement, teamwork and monetization fit the kind of break you want.

How to choose a shooter after Call of Duty

Call of Duty combines several formats: fast respawn matches, objective modes, military presentation, progression systems and, in Warzone, battle royale. No single competitor reproduces all of those elements. Start by deciding which part you are trying to escape or preserve.

  • Want a bigger battlefield? Battlefield 6 and Delta Force put more emphasis on teams, vehicles or large objectives than a typical close-quarters match.
  • Want slower, higher-stakes decisions? Rainbow Six Siege and VALORANT make information, positioning and coordinated utility more important than raw reaction speed.
  • Want character abilities? Apex Legends adds distinct legends and movement to a squad battle-royale structure, while VALORANT uses abilities inside short competitive rounds.
  • Want an arena reset? Halo Infinite trades military realism for symmetrical maps, futuristic weapons and repeatable engagements.
  • Want battle royale with a different rhythm? Fortnite OG and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS cover opposite ends of the presentation and pacing spectrum.

Battlefield 6: the closest change in military scale

Pick Battlefield 6 if you still want modern military combat but want the action to feel broader than a typical Call of Duty lobby. EA’s official guide separates the paid game’s standard Multiplayer from the free-to-play REDSEC experience. That distinction matters: you can choose conventional team battles in the main product or try the no-cost entry point when you want a battle-royale-style experience without buying the full game.

Why it feels different

The appeal is scale rather than a completely different genre. Larger maps and more extensive objectives give squads room to maneuver, attack from multiple directions and recover after a lost engagement. The result is a military sandbox that rewards reading the wider fight instead of focusing only on the next doorway.

Who should choose it

  • Players who enjoy objective warfare and want more room around each gunfight.
  • Friends who prefer coordinated pushes over individual kill streaks.
  • Warzone players who want a separate free-to-play entry point, provided REDSEC’s current offering matches their preferred mode.

What to check first

Confirm which edition and component you are installing. Standard Multiplayer and REDSEC are presented separately by EA, and availability can differ by platform and region. Verify the current store listing, storage requirement and any online-subscription requirement for your platform before purchase. Live-service content can also change after launch, so treat the current mode list as the authoritative one.

Rainbow Six Siege: the deliberate tactical option

Rainbow Six Siege is the strongest choice when “a break from Call of Duty” means fewer disposable lives and more consequence for every decision. Ubisoft describes it as “an elite, tactical team-based shooter where superior planning and execution triumph.” That description is accurate to the fundamental loop: teams gather information, shape the environment, use specialized equipment and execute a short plan under pressure.

What free access includes

Ubisoft offers free access to Quick Match, Unranked and Dual Front. Ranked play and additional operators require an upgrade. This gives a new player enough space to learn the maps and basic teamwork before paying, but it does not provide the complete competitive progression path.

How a round differs from a respawn match

A mistake in Siege can remove your utility or your operator for the rest of a round. As a result, sound cues, drone information, camera placement and wall or doorway control are central skills. The best first habit is to communicate what you know rather than rushing to be the first player through a door. A team that preserves information and trades eliminations efficiently can win without dominating aim duels.

Who will enjoy it

  • Players who like learning maps, angles and operator interactions.
  • Groups willing to use voice or concise pings to coordinate.
  • Anyone who wants a tactical game but would rather test several modes before buying access to ranked play.

Siege is a poor fit if you want instant respawns, constant solo action or a low-learning-curve shooter. Its satisfaction comes from understanding why a plan worked, not from repeating the same high-speed route every round.

Delta Force: the broad free military package

Delta Force is the most versatile free military alternative in this group. The Xbox product page calls it “the definitive free-to-play modern team-based tactical shooter” and documents several distinct ways to play. Its Warfare mode supports 32-versus-32 battles, while Operations provides extraction gameplay. Xbox lists online multiplayer for 2–64 players, so the game can scale from small coordinated groups to very large team fights.

Warfare for large objectives

Choose Warfare when you want the massed-team feeling associated with a military shooter. Thirty-two-player sides create more simultaneous pushes, defensive lines and opportunities to support a squad without every outcome depending on one duel. This is the Delta Force mode to try first if your main complaint about Call of Duty is that matches feel too compressed.

Operations for extraction tension

Operations changes the risk calculation. You enter with a plan, collect resources or complete objectives, and need to extract rather than simply reach a score limit. The extraction format makes route planning and knowing when to disengage important. It is a better fit than Warfare if you want tension between fights and a reason to value survival.

  • ALL‑OUT WARFARE GAMEPLAY — Engage in massive combined‑arms battles with high‑intensity infantry combat, aerial dogfights, tanks, jets, and large combat arsenals.
  • KINESTHETIC COMBAT SYSTEM — Harness precise control over movement and actions with a refined combat system built for fluid gunplay, traversal, and environmental interaction.
  • MULTIPLAYER AT SCALE — Fight for victory across iconic modes like Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush, Domination, King of the Hill, Payload, and the revamped Battlefield Portal.
  • TACTICAL DESTRUCTION — Turn the environment into a weapon by demolishing structures, reshaping the battlefield, and using reactive destruction systems for strategic advantage.

Why it is the best free military starting point

Delta Force covers two major military-shooter moods without requiring a purchase up front. You can move between a large team battle and an extraction session depending on how much time and concentration you have. Check the current Xbox or platform listing for supported systems, installation size and any changes to mode availability; those details are subject to live-service updates.

Apex Legends: the hero-battle-royale alternative

Apex Legends is the pick for players who want a battle royale in which character identity and movement are as important as weapon choice. Microsoft includes Apex Legends in its free online multiplayer shooter catalog. Each legend contributes a defined set of abilities, so squad composition changes how you approach rotations, revives, escapes and final-circle fights.

What makes the matches distinct

Compared with a conventional military battle royale, Apex asks you to track both enemy weapons and enemy abilities. A squad may create cover, scan an area, reposition rapidly or force a team out of a building through coordinated skills. Good movement can keep a fight alive when your initial aim duel goes badly, but careless ability use can leave a team without an escape tool when it matters.

Who should play it

  • Players who want a squad-first battle royale rather than a purely weapon-driven one.
  • People who enjoy learning a roster and switching roles between matches.
  • Anyone who prefers energetic movement and frequent repositioning.

Because modes and playlists rotate, use the current platform page to confirm the exact battle-royale and limited-time offerings available when you install. The free entry point is clear, but the amount of content and the preferred playlist can change over time.

VALORANT: the round-based precision option

VALORANT suits players who want to replace Call of Duty’s continuous respawn rhythm with structured tactical rounds. Microsoft lists it as a free online multiplayer shooter. Teams alternate between attacking and defending, and character abilities support the plan rather than replacing accurate shooting.

The skills that matter most

Crosshair placement, disciplined peeking, angle control and timing are more valuable than sprinting through the map. The round economy also affects decisions: buying powerful weapons and abilities now can leave fewer resources for the next round. A team that wins with surviving players and usable equipment can create an advantage that extends beyond a single elimination.

Best use case for a Call of Duty player

Try VALORANT if you like objective modes but want each round to have a clear beginning, middle and end. It is especially suitable for friends who enjoy discussing a plan between rounds and refining it after an opponent counters them. Expect a steeper adjustment if your favorite Call of Duty moments come from constant movement, rapid respawns or solo flanking.

VALORANT is free to enter, but confirm current platform availability and account requirements on the live store page before downloading.

Halo Infinite: the arena-shooter reset

Halo Infinite provides the cleanest break from military realism. Microsoft lists Halo Infinite among its free online multiplayer shooters. Its arena format centers on map control, weapon pickups, shields and repeatable engagements rather than a battle-royale survival arc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why arena combat feels refreshing

Maps are designed around predictable lanes and contested power positions, so improvement comes from controlling space and managing resources. You learn when a powerful weapon or equipment item will return, how shields change the timing of a duel and where an opponent is likely to emerge. The futuristic setting also changes the visual and audio language of combat without abandoning team objectives.

Who should choose Halo

  • Players who want short, repeatable matches with clear routes and power positions.
  • Fans of classic arena shooting who miss map knowledge as a major skill.
  • Anyone tired of military-themed presentation but not ready to leave team objectives behind.

Halo Infinite is not a substitute for a realistic battle royale or an extraction game. It is the better choice when the goal is to reset your expectations about weapons, maps and movement entirely.

Fortnite OG and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS: two battle-royale departures

Both Fortnite OG and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS appear in Microsoft’s free online multiplayer shooter catalog, but they offer very different reasons to leave Warzone.

Fortnite OG

Fortnite OG is the accessible, stylized option. Its presentation is more playful, and the OG branding is aimed at a distinct legacy-map and rule-set feel. Choose it if you want a battle royale that is easy to enter with friends and less committed to military realism. The current playlist, map rotation and building or no-building options should be checked in the live game because Fortnite’s seasonal structure changes frequently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PUBG is the slower, more grounded alternative. Weapon handling, exposure and rotations carry more weight, and crossing open terrain can be a serious decision rather than a brief sprint between cover. It is a good fit for players who want battle royale tension without hero abilities and who are comfortable spending more time scouting before committing to a fight.

Which battle royale is the better fit?

If you prefer… Start with… Reason
Stylized presentation and a quick social entry Fortnite OG More approachable tone and a distinct legacy-focused presentation
Grounded gunplay and cautious rotations PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS Greater emphasis on exposure, positioning and survival decisions
Character abilities and high mobility Apex Legends Legend skills and squad movement define engagements
Large military operations Battlefield 6 REDSEC or Delta Force Better match for players seeking a broader military scale

Free versus paid: what you actually get

Most of the alternatives listed here have a free entry point, but “free” does not mean the same thing in every game.

  • Battlefield 6: the conventional Battlefield 6 product is paid; EA separately documents REDSEC as a free-to-play experience.
  • Rainbow Six Siege: Ubisoft’s free access covers Quick Match, Unranked and Dual Front. Ranked play and more operators require an upgrade.
  • Delta Force: the Xbox listing presents it as free-to-play, with Warfare and Operations among its documented modes.
  • Apex Legends, VALORANT, Halo Infinite, Fortnite OG and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS: Microsoft lists these among free online multiplayer shooters. Exact playlists, platform support and account requirements should be confirmed in the current store listing.

Before installing any large multiplayer game, check available storage, graphics drivers and the minimum or recommended hardware shown by the platform. On a console, also verify whether your online-multiplayer subscription is required. On a PC, background downloads, shader compilation and updates can affect the first launch even when the game itself is free.

A practical way to test three alternatives

  1. Choose one paid-scale, one tactical and one free battle-royale option. A useful sample is Battlefield 6, Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends, or Delta Force, VALORANT and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS if you want to avoid an upfront purchase.
  2. Play each game for at least three complete sessions. One match can be distorted by an unfamiliar map, an unusually strong teammate or a rotating playlist.
  3. Track the kind of decision you enjoyed. Note whether you preferred controlling a large objective, preparing a site, managing abilities, winning a round economy or surviving a rotation.
  4. Check the friction before committing. Look at queue times in your region, required storage, platform support, free-access limits and whether your friends can join from their systems.
  5. Keep the game that changes the problem you were tired of. If you disliked close-quarters repetition, choose scale. If you disliked chaotic information, choose a round-based tactical game. If you disliked military realism, choose Halo or Fortnite.

Common problems when switching shooters

“I keep playing them like Call of Duty.”

Transfer the useful fundamentals—aim, movement and target selection—but reset your timing. Siege punishes unnecessary exposure, VALORANT rewards patience between shots, and PUBG rewards planning the next safe position before firing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My friends do not want the same level of commitment.”

Use the free-access games to lower the barrier, then choose modes that match the group’s session length. Halo arena matches and Fortnite are easier casual tests; Siege ranked and extraction play demand more concentration and a willingness to accept a bad round or lost run.

“The free version does not include what I expected.”

Read the current mode and edition description before installing. Siege’s free access does not include ranked play or every operator feature, and Battlefield 6’s standard Multiplayer is distinct from REDSEC. Live-service catalogs can change, so an older video or forum post may describe a different access rule.

“The game feels too difficult at first.”

Use the mode that exposes the core loop with the least pressure: Quick Match or Unranked in Siege, Warfare in Delta Force, arena playlists in Halo Infinite, or standard battle-royale matches with friends in Apex. Learn one map, role or weapon family at a time instead of changing every variable simultaneously.
